Apple Cinema Displays make OSX crash - or not

Hello everyone, I am new to these forums, though I have often checked for answers here.
I have looked as best I could for issues similar to ours but haven't found any yet, so here it goes:
Our system:

Never had a problem (Computer purchased in mid-2007). However, a couple of weeks ago, it started: the OS wouldn't start. After a few trials and tests and wonderments, we realised that what prevented it from starting (you know, whirly thing then sometimes apple logo then just light blue: frozen) was the way the screens were plugged into the computer.
At the back of the computer there are four connections for the displays, two at the top and two at the bottom. They used to be connected to the two bottom ones. Then we realised that only attaching one single display to the top right connection would allow the computer to start.
Further tests led us to attach the second display AFTER the whole OS was up and operating, again at the top (next to the only functioning one for startup), and the displays work perfectly. However, if I leave them in this arrangement and turn off the computer, when I start it again the system crashes, like before.
I am pretty sure at this point that a hardware problem is causing a software crash, but what do you think it consists of? We performed all the tests, including the extended hardware test with the installation disk. No problems were found at all.
Would it be helpful (or harmful!) to take out the graphics cards and place them in different slots?
Thanks so much in advance,
Valentina

Hi, I have tried shifting them around, and the problem does seem to follow the graphics card, despite all tests indicating they are both working properly. Any other arrangements will cause a grey screen to come down while starting up and say I need to restart the computer.
Changing the slots for the graphic cards, but keeping the display attached in the right place, would allow the computer to turn on but a window would come up saying that they weren't optimally configured (16x or 8x or 4x speeds). The best configuration remains the one I begun with (slots 1 and 4). The computer will only start properly with the display in slot 4, right hand side looking at the back of the display, and only when it's turned on will it allow me to attach the second monitor, again, only in slot 4, to the left side.
The same would work if the card was in slot 1, but it would tell me they weren't configured ideally so I put the card back in slot 4.
At this point, then (I have also just tried resetting the PRAM by pressing cmdoption+PR when restarting, but no changes) should I reconfigure the graphics card? (If yes, how do I do it?)
Thanks again, Valentina

    im running OSX 10.7.4

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Apple Cinema Display (20-inch DVI 2005) not working after 10.10.3 update

I have an Apple Cinema Display (20-inch DVI 2005) that isn't working after installing the 10.10.3 update. The screen is just blank, and the power light just blinks a few times every 30 seconds or so. I use this as a second monitor with my iMac (27-inch, Late 2012). Any way to fix this? Thanks!

    Thank you for the update!
Next I would recommend the Reset the System section of the following article for additional troubleshooting:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
I would reset the SMC and the PRAM together, in that order one more time, then do the Safe Boot if needed.

  • 20" Apple Cinema Display - Dim Backlight Fixed! (Sorta)

Well... as many other Apple Cinema Display owners have experienced the infamous dim backlight with the "short short long blink" - I have some wierd news to report...
Mine got fixed last night on total accident.
Last night there was a huge storm in my area and there was a lot of lighting and massive down pour of rain, stay with me honest I have a point.
My G5 was on last night while I was asleep in the other room within visual range of the display. There was a lighting strike on my property about 20' from where my office is which is on the corner of the house. The lighting hit the tree and send an obvious surge of power into my house and zapped some electronics.
Wireless router, cable modem, and thermal label printer all bit the dust - and the USB ports on the back of the ADC display. I jumped up from the sleep and saw the monitor light up out of screen saver because the house shook so hard. I ran over to the machine and tried to move the mouse and keyboard and no go since the USB ports are burned out, but the monitor was FULLY LIT UP. I have unplugged the monitor and plugged it back in multiple times, turned the machine off and let it sit and it still is working great minus the USB ports.
My hunch is this... because of the dead USB ports which are no longer drawing any power, is it possible that the USB ports are the cause of the "short short long blink"?
My screen went dead initially when it was in a deep sleep mode and NEVER came out of it until now.
So basically what I am suggesting is that someone try and unhook the USB (if it is even possible) and see if that helps with their display - if not, I guess I am just lucky and my Apple Cinema Display is just lucky to not have fully bit the dust.

We can't answer that because that's going to depend on who you talk to. By the book, AppleCare covers defects and not accidental damage, so you could get a No answer if they determine it was not due to a defect. But realistically, sometimes you talk to someone who decides to use their ability to authorize an exception and get it fixed anyway. The only way to find out is to call AppleCare.

  • Apple Cinema Display 24-inch sleep problems with MacBook 13-inch?

    Hey guys,
Occasionally, my MacBook (13-inch, 2009) when connected to my Apple Cinema Display 24-inch screen will not wake up from sleep mode - whether in clamshell mode, or not. Even if i unplug the Display from the Macbook, the MacBook will not wake up.
This can be very frustrating when it occurs because i have no choice but to give the MacBook a hard shut down.
Not sure whether I'm the only one with this problem, but if there is any solution to this issue it'll be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers!

You might try running the MacBook in Safe Mode for a while to see if the problem still occurs when running safe. If the problem goes away while in safe mode, that would point to a problem in the configuration of your main account.

  • 21" Apple Cinema Display

I've got an 21" Apple Cinema Display (16x10), that I bought sometime at the beginning of 2000.
I am looking to a fast answer about its weight.
Where can I get any document with its specifications?
    Any help?

thank you very much for the fast response. It was once more a great surprise to me!
    Now,
the Apple Cinema Display, that I mentioned is not a CRT one. It is a flat LCD display! I don't remember the exact size of it! (sorry, but right now I am in vacations, so I use my laptop, instead my mac pro that I use in my base)
    Anyway,
if I remember well, my Apple Cinema Display is the model that Apple had before the arrival of the 24" Apple LED Cinema Display. Among the 30" flat panel display it has no glossy panel. Instead it has matte panel and it is around 20" to 21". Sorry for not being more specific.
    Any further help?

  • 20" Apple Cinema Display not recognised after upgrading to OS 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)

20" Apple Cinema Display not recognised after upgrading to OS 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion).
Hello Apple! Anybody there? How long does your community have to wait for a solution?
The same problem has been unsolved for months now. No statements from Apple either.
I was told today to wait for 10.8.3. This might solve the issue. I can not belive my ears.
My MacBookPro 4,1, Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5 GHz Processor and Graphics chip: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, will not talk to the exter. 20" Cinema Display ( Model Number A1081 ). The screen stays black. Resetting the PRAM did not help. I removed the 'com.apple.windowserver.plist' and the 'com.apple.windowserver.OE35739etc,etcxxxxxxxxxxx.plist', but that did not help either.
Any other solutions, or do I have to downgrade or give up on Apple Computers alltogether after using them for over 25 years?

I found out that I needed a $100 mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to make my $30" cinema display work with my macbook pro
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?fnode=51
When I found out that solved the problem, I took it back because that was too expensive for a stupid adapter, and it still didn't work perfectly.

I have apple cinema display (20"), model: A1038 from before. When i turned on mac mini the display was not detected.
I also have one Samsung monitor which was detected without problems.

    - connect only apple cinema display with mini displayport to DVI and turn on coomputer
    - connect both displays, went to System preferences -> display and click on 2Detect display"
    nothing works

  • Bridge CS5 preview / slideshow not working on 27" Apple Cinema Display

I'm using my 2009 (black key) MacBookPro and Mac OS X 10.6.7 running Snow Leopard.
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Adobe Bridge CS5 works beautifully on my MBP, my photography workflow depends on Bridge.
However, when I attach my 27" Apple Cinema Display and try to preview images by hitting the space bar I get a gray screen. Likewise, the slideshow renders only gray.
It's not the "black out other monitor". I've cleared the cache to re-render all the previews.
I've scoured these forums as well as the Apple ones, and the helpful folks currently at Photoshop World in Orlando advised me that, collectively, the kind people here know everything.   I know I can't be the only photographer who uses this configuration. I'd like to use the display for client previews/ordering.
I would so appreciate any tips you may have for me; thank you in advance for your time.
    Warmly,
    Darcy
    http://hisandhersphoto.net

Yes, thank you. I found that post - among others when researching before I asked. I tried all the suggestions in that one and in the others.
My issue isn't low quality rendering in the preview and slideshow - my issue is NO rendering at all in slideshow and preview. It's just blank. Gray.
I deleted the cache in my library and through the Bridge program itself to rebuild the previews. I tried the various options of "software rendering" on and off, and different configurations in the preferences and none seem to make the preview or slideshow work. I have all the updates from Adobe and from Mac.
I tried importing the photos I need to show my clients (who are coming to my studio this evening!) into Lightroom 3, and the LR slideshow works. But using LR and having to import photos into it is an extra step not in my workflow.
Ideally, I can make Bridge work instead of making yet another resource-consuming copy of these photos on this computer via the Lr library.
So - current state is unsolved.
Lightroom 3 slideshow and preview works, but isn't ideal since it involves importing the images into Lr. Since that works - would that mean my video card is acceptable?
Bridge can show thumbnails on the 27" display but no preview or slideshow.
Bridge preview and slideshow works perfectly on my 15" MacBook Pro.
I'm so disappointed since I bought the 27" Apple Cinema Display this week and was told it would work with my computer "out of the box" - I was sure to ask several times, "so there's nothing else I need to buy or do to make this work with my programs? Just plugin and go?" and several times I was assured, "Yes... plugin and go."
I sure would appreciate anyone who's made Adobe Bridge work with a 27" display. Thank you!

  • 2005 Apple Cinema displays not able to show movies with new iTunes

ITunes is giving me the following error when trying to watch movies on my 2005 Apple Cinema display(s).
The selected movie won’t play on one of your connected displays.
This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
Try moving the iTunes window to a different display. Make sure the entire window is on the supported display.
I called the Apple support, they said my displays can not support HDCP. Can anyone else comment on this?
Is this true to the best of your knowledge?
Is there anything I can do to make my movies play again? Other than buy new monitors of course.
    Thanks...

    Hi,
Highlight one of the applications that cannot be updated and click File> Get Info. Make sure you are signing-in to the iTunes Store with that Account Name shown in the Get Info window.
Then sign-in to the iTunes store and verify the account information as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
If the issue persists, try to reconfigure the security software or remove the SC Info folder as others have in this related discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1939036

  • Using the Macbook with new LED Apple Cinema Display? Not a beginner's Q...

Hi - I'm sort of cross-posting this because I'm not getting any answers in the Apple Cinema Display Forum, so here goes. So far, no one - not even a tech guy at a local Apple Reseller - has been able to help, so I've got my fingers crossed.
I just got a 24" Apple LED Cinema Display and am using it with my 13" Aluminum Unibody Macbook. What I do is dock the Macbook (with closed screen) when at home with the big display and just use that. I enlarge program windows and arrange the layout (in different spaces) to take advantage of the large screen and resolution. So far so good.
But I'm a student and take my macbook with me to class. When I open it up, all the program windows are set as they were on the larger screen, which means some are out of view or simply not well-adjusted for the smaller and lower resolution of the Macbook. I manually adjust these and work on the Macbook that way.
But when I return home in the evening, I have to adjust them again once I 'dock' the Macbook. Kind of a pain if I'm doing this twice a day.
What I'd like to know is: is there a setting or group of settings that would do this automatically for me? A program? An AppleScript? Surely someone out there has had the same issues and has found a fix, if such a thing exists. Or is it just a fact of nature one deals with when working on two screens?
To preclude one response: yes, I know I can mirror the displays when I open the Macbook along with the LED Cinema Display. But this simply mirrors them using the lower resolution and dimensions of the Macbook screen. And that kind of negates having the larger, Cinema Display.
So - any thoughts? Solutions? How do you guys manage with this?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I don't really have a solution for you but wanted to link you to a discussion on this very topic that took place last month on MacInTouch.
    http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/helpplease/topic3939.html#d24sep2009
The conclusion seemed to be that it is not an OS issue, it's an application issue. There really was no good answer but some good insight into why the problem exists and why it may not be something Apple can fix.

  • Wi-fi not working with Apple Cinema Display and Bluetooth-peripheral

    Hello everyone.
I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. My problem is that when I use my macbook in closed-clamshell mode, the wi-fi connection becomes very slow and it regularly drops.
My external display is a Apple Cinema Display, 22-inch, model M8149. My mouse is the Apple Magic Mouse and my keyboard is the Apple Wireless Keyboard.
Thanks in advance for helping me.

    Good day Brett,
I followed the suggested steps and for Wireless Diagnostics is all ok, but my connectivity problems are not solved.
I have made two report of the analysis. The first in "normal" mode is downloadable here. The second in closed-clamshell mode is downloadable here.
Could you tell me what is going on?
    Thank you a lot

  • 30 inch Apple Cinema Display-system prefs not showing native resolutions

The 30 inch Apple Cinema Display, seems to be working fine with the mac pro, but when I try to hook up the 2009 mini, the display preferences do not show the mini's native resolution of 1920x1200.  The maximum it shows is 1280x800, and only gives a few other choices.  This mini had once been attached to a TV monitor, so I am wondering if that has something to do with the lack of choices in the system preferences.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the system preferences to display the correct info so that I can adjust the resolution ?
    Thanks

Being compatible with the 24-inch Cinema Display and being able to use it at resolutions higher than 1280 by 800 doesn't necessarily mean that it can drive the 30-inch Cinema Display at its full resolution. You need to use a dual-link DVI connection as stated above.

  • Apple Cinema Display is not reading or seeing...

    Hello...
I would love to have your help on this situation.... My Apple Cinema Display is not reading or seeing my ipod adapter or my printer adapter at the back of the display. it is weird to see this happening now because it was working great until yesterday. I was like huh? how did this happen?
I tried to fix the mac with OS disc as well as Pro Tech Tool. they did not see anything wrong with it. think that the plug holes are worn out or burnt? thanks for your help... can email me with directions or explanations [email protected] (i rarely come in this boards unless I come up with a problem and i come here to check for information in this board...
It is Apple Cinema Display - LCD display - TFT - 20" - 1680 x 1050 (It is running strong for 6 or 7 years with no problems at all.)
    thanks!

The USB circuitry sometimes fails in older Apple displays. This can affect the USB ports, computer control of brightness, and computer sleep. Sometimes unplugging all cables from the display for a few minutes will fix it for a while.
