Apple Configurator 1.0.1

The Apple Configurator 1.0.1 update is available from the Mac App Store.
This update improves overall stability and performance and addresses a number of issues, including the following:
Enterprise apps packaged as .ipa files are imported and installed correctly.
Redemption codes for apps that contain a comma in their title can now be imported.
A redemption code may be reused to install an app on another device if the original device is unsupervised and erased by Apple Configurator, or if the app's installation did not complete on the original device.
The redemption code used to purchase an app in iTunes may also be used to install the app on one device with Apple Configurator.
The number of redemption codes remaining for an app is now displayed correctly.
Notes and bookmarks entered into iBooks and iTunes U are deleted when a backup is restored to a supervised device.
The WPA2 password is saved when editing a Wi-Fi profile payload.
The name of a stored backup is saved when edited.
The storage capacity of an 8 GB iPod touch is now displayed correctly.
The "Erase all contents and settings" checkbox on the Prepare pane has been relabeled "Erase before installing".

Oh well,
Today, I phoned Apple Education / Enterprise / Apple configurator people who claim that by article
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5437
You can only configure two things.
"Apple TV supports Wi-Fi and Certificate payloads for configuring network access, including proxy and 802.1X settings.'
It reminded me that living at the cutting edge meant eating thin slices :-)
I'm sure it will get better and beefier with time.

New to this process and we are setting up bays for IPads in an education environment.  I'm able to load a profile (unsupervised) onto an IPad but as soon as I choose supervise and prepare the IPad the Apple Configurator crashes with the error message below.  I'm not sure how to proceed from this - running OSX 10.7.5 and configurator 1.3.1.  The Mac book pro was bought to supervise the IPads and not used for anything else.  Have reinstalled configurator without any luck. Boy, I sure hope you found a solution to this.  THe exact same thing happened top me, yesterday.  I thought it was the updates to the iTunes store and the release of iOS 7.  However, today, it is still happening.  I was partway through setting up iPads for a 1:1 initiative.  The first 11 worked fine, then the strangeness started.    Most of it seemed to relate to the iTunes store, but the worst part is exactly as you describe, and I have the same setup.   MacBook Pro specifically to manage the iPads.  Configurator crashes whenever a device is hooked up to "supervise" even if it is fresh out of the box.  The details on the crash also show the "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'ACUUnpackFirmwareOperation cannot fail the operation and without setting an error'"
Oh, did I mention I have to have the iPads set up next week?
    HELP!

I guess you mean whether I would be able to add one of the iPads to the new AC Mac by putting it in Restore mode and supervising it from that Mac? That will probably work. My problem is, that I've done that with the whole batch (60+ as I said earlier) when moving to a dedicated account within my own PowerBook some time ago. That takes an awfull lot of time, because it involves doing manual tweaking per iPad and adding the purchased apps again (in the Netherlands we don't have VPP so that is a manual process).
I would really rather have the settings transfered and continue working on the Mac Mini than starting all over again.

  • Apple configurator - Passcode Restriction saving on one ipad but won't save on the others

I have read a few different posts about the ipad restrictions passcode not transferring to the rest of my ipads but can’t understand why it saves on one of them ?
I have 2 cabinets with 10 ipads in each both linked up to an imac using Apple Configurator.
On iPad One I’ve set up the available restrictions within profile, added apps, changed wallpaper/background etc and the enabled restrictions using a passcode on the actual device and backed up.
I then apply the backup and profile to the remainder 19 ipads and everything looks fine except enable restrictions is set to off on all of the 19 ipads.
So I think this can’t be a setting that’s transferable. I then un-tick Automatic Refresh in Preferences and go through all 19 ipads and enable restrictions manually choosing the exact same passcode for all devices.
I plug them back in and refresh the devices. All 19 loose their passcode except for ipad one ?
Why does ipad one save this setting yet all other 19 devices cant save theirs ?
I intend of giving out the 20 ipads for public use but can restrict users from going in to settings, then reset and erase the device back to factory settings.
This seems like a basic requirement for anyone deploying ipads for public, business or education use.
Is there a smarter way to do this that I a missing?

    HI nsdjoey,
    Many thanks for your reply.
Hopefully this will be an update within Apple Configurator soon. The configurator has the potentail to be a great tool but lacks soem really basic features.
I'll take a look at making an encrypted backup in iTunes, although none of my iPads are showing up as devices within iTunes. Maybe becasue they are in supervise mode ?
Also just noticed that iPad 20 is not appearing in the Configurator even though its conected and lit up in the sync cab. I've change leads and ports in the cab but getting nothing.
    Thanks for your advice.

  • How can I add an iPad to Apple Configurator without losing the user's settings, folders, etc?

When attempting to add an iPad that has already been in use (for some time) by a particular user into Apple Configurator, I end up having to either wipe the iPad entirely as if it is a new iPad, or restore the user's settings and configuration from iCloud during mini-setup. It seems to be one choice or the other.
Is there a way to add the "old" iPad into Apple Configurator for management purposes yet still be able to restore the user's settings from iCloud? That is - items like: folders, pictures, email settings, app data?

This isnt true. Connecting an unsupervised device to configurator and supervising it will wipe the device, there is no way around that. You can attempt an iCloud restore from here, but anything not backed up prior to supervising the device will be erased when supervising it. I have never tried to restore data from an unsupervised iPad so I have no clue if everything will come back.
Let me clarify... You can successfully restore an iCloud backup of an unsupervised iPad to a new (i.e. different) iPad and have it Supervised with data intact. The process below will allow Configurator to Supervise a device without wiping it when an iCloud backup from a different unsupervised iPad is restored to it.
Try it… Get 2 new unsupervised iPads… we'll call them iPad "A" and iPad "B." Take iPad "A" and install a few apps, take a few photos, change the background, create a new document in Pages, etc. Run an iCloud backup of iPad "A" using your Apple ID. This is our unsupervised backup of iPad "A."
Now take new unsupervised iPad "B" and start running through the setup assistant. When you get to the restore screen, choose to restore from iCloud backup. Log in with your Apple ID. Select the backup for iPad "A." The backup will restore and then the iPad will restart. Once it restarts, you get to a "Hello" screen on the iPad. At this point, plug the iPad into your Configurator computer. On the Prepare screen, turn Supervision ON and select "Don't restore backup." Click Prepare.
Configurator will not wipe the iPad. It will run through the supervision process but not wipe it. Once complete, you'll see that iPad "B" is now exactly the same as iPad "A", but if you go to Settings -> General -> Profiles on iPad "B" you will see a Supervision profile installed.
The key here is to use a different iPad from the originally backed up iPad. You can't restore the backup of iPad "A" to iPad "A" again and supervise it without wiping it. But you can take the backup of unsupervised iPad "A" and restore it to iPad "B" and retain apps, data, and settings of iPad "A" but with the Supervision profile.
    Hope this clarifies things!
    ~Joe
I see where your going with that. I dont have any way to reproduce this scenario in my environment, but I will take your word for it that this works. I have only ever plugged in an unsupervised device to configurator and gone through the setup, which always wipes the device. If your saying theres a way around that you should give that a shot OP.

  • Apple Configurator - setting up carts

I am trying to fine tune my instructions on how to setup iPads on a Bretford cart.  Any feed back would be great.
    Thanks
Make sure that no iPads are plugged in
Make sure you have your itunes account setup
Authorize you iTunes account on the computer that you will be using to manage the iPads
Download your free and paid Apps
(make sure you use the same iTunes Apple ID in iTunes as you do in Apple Configurator)
    Quit iTunes
Connect all iPads in the cart
    Open Apple Configurator
    Go to Prepare tab
    Under Settings
Name iPad (I give it the teachers name and a - mark, I add the numbers in step 6)
    Supervision: ON
Check box Allow devices to connect to other Macs (this is helpful when a teacher wants to download a movie off student iPad onto their teacher computer)
    iOS should be Latest
    Check box Erase before installing
    Restore:  Don’t Restore Backup
Check profile(s) - (this is where you add your wifi network and restrictions)
Hit the Prepare button (this is going to take about an hour)
    Quit Configurator
    iTunes Sync
    Open iTunes
The Welcome to Your New iPad screen will appear
Click on Setup as New iPad, hit Continue
    Click on Get Started
You must do this for each iPad
    Quit iTunes
    Name the iPads
    Open Configurator
    Go to the Supervise tab
Name the iPads (it is easier to pull the all out, and plug one at a time to name)
The iPads do not show up on the list in the order that they are plugged in
Preparing the Master iPad (use iPad #1)
    Remove iPad #1
    Go through the registration sequence
    Go to Settings
    Go to Restrictions
    Turn on
We use the same code for all of our carts
Turn off the ability to delete apps
We add the code so that they students cannot add a code themselves and lock us out of the iPads
    Plug back in iPad
    Go to the Apps tab
Add any new apps and VPP codes
    Check all boxes
Hit Refresh (this takes over an hour depending on how many apps you are installing)
Remove iPad and put Apps into folders (examples below of what we did for our school)
    Apple
    Chinese
    Mathematics
    Science
    Spanish
    Grade level folder
Put main folders in the Dock (Apple, Mathematics, Grade level folder)
    Plug in iPad #1
Do a backup, under the Prepare tab
    Click on iPad #1
    Click on the Settings tab
Click on Restore and select Back Up...
Name the backup (it would be a good idea to add the date)
    Clone iPads
    Click on Supervise tab
    Click on All iPads (#)
    Click on Apps tab
Check all boxes for the Apps
Under the Restore select your backup
Click Refresh (this should take about an hour)
Once they have all image, make sure you change the Restore option back to Don’t Restore Backup

  • How can i transfer my installation of Apple Configurator from one Mac to another?

I work at a secondary school in the UK. We currently have 20ish ipads, all configured and supervised through Apple configurator. As the mac we were using is rather old, we bought a new one, and I need to transfer all the apple configurator date from the old one to the new one.
I tried using the information from this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5194?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I don't want to do a full restore from the old to the new as the old one has so much extra stuff on its HDD that isn't necessary any more. I only want to transfer the configurator data across so that I can plug our ipads into the new mac and they will work as before.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks.

The Apple Document covers this. See the footnotes of my google docs
I've done this, it is easy, but takes time and patience.
On the existing mac with OSX and Configurator:
    ========================================
    - run disk utility and verify your disks are ok, a must
    - make note of the user logged in when using configurator  such as "bob"
    - connect a new or newly reformatted USB formatted for Apple
    - run time machine and backup to the USB
    - Take the mac off the network,
    - Buy a new mac
    - setup the mac with a new logon account like Paul or  "bob2"   do not use BOB !!
    - finish the new purchase setup, get to your desktop
    - now run the migraiton assistant  moving bob from the USB to the new mac
    - reboot, logon as bob, launch configurator and connect just one ipad.  Test

  • I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. Any suggestions would be great please.

I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps. I did this initially as our school internet connection was stopping us from being able to update the IOS and our County was offering a managed system, Lightspeed, which took control of every device in school which proved very expensive.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. As we frequently use the ipads as cameras this is causing us a problem. We have a school imac that I use to keep the devices updated with Apple Configurator (not connected to our network), and this doesn't seem to offer any solution to download them either.  I was told there was a setting in Apple Configurator to allow other computers to download from supervised devices, but I can't see it anywhere.  I am very new to this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated please.

I assume you are wanting to take the photos and movies off the iPads?
Connect the iPad to a Apple computer. Open "Image Capture". Any photos or video can me imported to the desktop or other location on your computer.
I had this same problem last year and as we have no wifi I asked lots of people at Apple what I could do - no one provided this answer (a little unbelievable!). If you have wifi using something like dropbox would be an easier solution.
    Hope this helps

  • Apple Configurator - Updating to iOS 6.1.2 removed saved user data

We are currently managing several classroom sets of iPads using Apple Configurator. When updating to iOS 6.1.2 on the Supervise tab, about two-thirds of one classroom (about 20 iPads) and another 4 out of 6 in a special education classroom lost all previously saved data (application data, documents, pictures, etc.) during the update. We have another classroom that updated approximately 30 iPads following the same exact steps using the same configurator computer and none were erased so we're having a hard time figuring out the issue.
When I was watching the configurator run through the status updates during the iOS update (e.g. downloading iOS, decompressing iOS, installing iOS) there was another step on the iPads that lost data which was "supervising device." All of the iPads were already supervised so I don't know why this step occurred or what caused it to happen. With the grouping of 6 iPads, the 4 that were erased immediately started decompressing and installing iOS while the 2 that saved user data went to the downloading iOS stage first. I wasn't monitoring the grouping of 30 as closely, but I did notice the "supervising device" stage on the iPads that lost all user data.

I think for the teachers you are going to have to tell them to copy their data off the device.
Suggest dropbox or other cloud storage.  Could set up a WebDave server.
A simple and popular way to copy files.
    http://wiki.dropbox.com
Could set up sync-ing so they would come back in he fall.  I'd be cautios and do everythig simple.
For syncing pc or mac folders to iPad applications.
"Using SugarSync, you simply designate folders that you want to “sync” to the cloud and it keeps everything in sync anytime you make changes.  This is the way cloud storage should be done and especially if you are using your iPad for buisness or for school."
The only potential downside is that so many apps for the iPhone/iPad come with Dropbox sync built in which makes it extremely convenient.

  • Apple Configurator 1.3 Update Crashes Constantly

Just installed 1.3 but boy do I wish I hadn't! Can no longer open Configurator. Crashes on launch without fail. Many others have the same problem after reading some reviews in the App Store.
Anyone know how to fix this, or even if it is fixable? I launch with no iPad's connected.

I found someone who posted Apple Configurator 1.2.1  on another forum, in case you want to roll back until 1.3.1 comes out...
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ldzpp9ajy7y82k/Apple%20Configurator%201.2.1.zip
You'll have to delete ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator (probably back it up first) or else the downgraded app won't open, but unfortunately you'll probably lose your supervised devices.
    Hope this helps!

  • How can I distribute the free version of Numbers, Keynote, and Pages using Apple Configurator

I am trying to use Apple Configurator to mamnge a set of classroom iPads.  I have figured out how to purchase apps via the VPP account and distribute them, but I can't figure out how to distribute the free versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.  When I try downloading these apps on the Mac running Configurator, they show up as a paid version.  Currently, I have to disable the option in Configurator that removes non-mamanged apps and then install the apps manually on each iPad.  Does anyone have a better option than this.  My hope was to be able to completely manage the iPads by simply pugging them into the Mac.

The apps is not only for iPhone 5c and 5s. its for all apple products that are purchased with iOS 7. I don't believe if you already have the product then update it to iOS 7 that the apps will be free. I believe that you have to purchase the product on or after the 18th since iOS 7 will already be on the products.
Edit...All compatible iOS 7 products activated on or after September 1st, 2013 will recieve the iWork apps for free. So yes he/she will recieve the apps

  • App store icon gone missing/Web Content Filter - Apple Configurator

I am using Apple Configurator to manage the iPads at my school. I changed the settings on my school's profile, within Apple Configurator, so that the App store was not available. The App store icon disappeared and all was good. I decided to change the settings back, to allow the App store, saved the settings and refreshed a group of iPads. The App store icon is still missing and it doesn't appear that my new settings have been applied. I quit Configurator and tried again, but no success. I am running Configurator 1.5 and the ipads are running iOS 7.1.
Also, I have unchecked the "Allow use of You Tube" button because I want You Tube disabled, but Configurator still allows the use of You Tube through Safari. Is there any way to disable the use of You Tube without using the ridiculous "Web Content Filter", that when activated, limits adult content (good), which seems to include a lot of valuable educational sites (bad)? To me the only other option available seems to be to tick "Specific Websites Only" and spend the next year typing in all the possible sites that might have educational merit, ergo, my use of the word 'ridiculous'. Is there something I am missing?

Locate it in the Apps folder and drag it to the dock.

  • I updated Apple Configurator to 1.3 and my database isn't migrating.

I updated Apple configurator to 1.3 from 1.2.1 and the database isnt migrating, it crashes during the process. When i use time machine to go back to before the update it starts trying to migrate again it doesnt revert it to 1.2.1 . When i try and revert back a few months the database does migrate but that was when we had personal profiles assigned to the devices but that was causing problems because a single corrupte user file can cause configurator to crash regularly and barely run. When i try and operate within the migrated 1.3 it beachballs/freezes as soon as you click anywhere within the app. Ideally i would want a away where i could revert to 1.2.1.

    Hi MrMtotheTizzle,
There have been a lot of crashing issues with 1.3. There are a few discussions going on here in the communities that may help you:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22503007?ac_cid=tw123456#22503007
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22456350#22456350
Also, it looks like there are issues with Lion and AC v1.3: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4613
I plan to stick with v1.2.1 until some of these issues get cleared up.
Good luck and hope this helps!!

  • Unable to check out Ipad in Apple Configurator

I am experiencing an error code when I try to check out an Ipad in Configurator "unable to change user". I am able to supervise and install apps. However when I go to check out the Ipad, the error description states it is unable to load the PDF documents into Adobe reader because the app is not present. The app is present however and I can access with not issues. Any help would be appreciated.

    Have you seen this thread:
Apple Configurator "unable to change user"

    Senario:
Need to manage 500 Enterprise iPads
    Requirements;
    1) Trackable via Find my iOS device  (we have 500 iPads and with the 100 device limit per iCloud account for Find my iOS device limit we have 5+ iCloud accounts).
    2) Individually named iPads for locating and sending commands to wipe, lost mode, etc.. on map per Find my iOS device (we uniquely name them in Apple Configurator either by using the "sequensetially numbering feature", or by creating individual back ups (yes, 450) with the name specified in the image).
    3) Find my iOS device feature enabled in base Prepared or Supervised image (using one of our 5+ iCloud accounts) (image can be created during prepared stage, or in supervised stage) - tried both and have the same issue - which I am getting to...
    4) VPP codes for paid apps (all VPP codes purchased with generic account which is the Apple Admin account for VPP purchases). Apple Configurator is set up under a different/ unique Apple account (i.e. not VPP admin account) and not logged into iTunes for any purchases/ services).
    Issue: Can not do any following senarios;
    A)
         1) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Prepare stage (added during preparing stage)
         2) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Supervised stage (added after supervising, and then backing up that supervised and iOS Find my iOS device enabled)
    B) 1) Apply master image to any Supervised iPad (under senario step A) or senario step B)), including the (Supervised or/ Prepared iPad that was used to create the maset iOS 7 image
Result = fail with Apple generic code "4" ; This is obviously due to Find my iOS device feature enabled during image capture.
According to Apple (see Apple Config. Help) the 'Activation lock' (new feature in iOS 7) will not be enabled on a supervised device when an iCloud account with "Find my iDevice" is enabled. Their "help files" seem to imply after the device is Supervised, and a person (presumably and end user) adds thier own iCloud account with Find my iOS device enabled the activation lock is not enabled and erasing/ reconfiguring with Apple Configurator will not cause reimaging probhlems such as requiring the end user's credentials to reconfigure the device using Apple Configurator (i.e. you won't need the end user's credentials).
Needed: To be able to configure Supervised iPads with iCloud account (Enterprised owned iCloud account) configured on the basse image, which has Find my iOS device enabled, and to be able to apply that base image to all Enterprise iPads without generic apple error code 4 issue.

    Hi all
I am trying to replicate these steps in my environment but I am having trouble getting an iCloud backup restored to a supervised device. Can someone clarify the steps? The parts I am unsure on are:
    1) Do you Prepare in Configurator with all the institution owned apps? Or do you install them after restoring the iCloud backup?
    2) After entering the personal AppleID to restore the iCloud backup, the setup wizard prompts for the Institution/Configurator AppleID, there is an option to 'Skip Now'. Do you enter in the password for the institution account? or do you skip that step?
    3) What exactly is on the screen in the 'mini setup assistant' after the restore when you Refresh with Configurator?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
