Apple Configurator - can't organize/group applied Apps?

There is a ton of educational apps available, couple thousand looks like.
So I'd like to download all the free ones (or at least as many as possible), and organize them into groups by subject matter in the iPad "App Launcher / Home Screen".

Except there does not appear to be any way to do that.
By default, the Apple Configurator slaps Apps onto the iPads as a huge unorganized mess.
Is there some hidden functionality for grouping apps together and naming these groups in the Apple Configurator that I am just not seeing?

And actually worse yet, Apps installed onto an iPad by the Apple Configurator are installed in an apparently totally random fashion.

I have no idea why the Apple Configurator did that.

Getting logs from Apple Configurator / Can't install in house app

Does anybody know how to get logs out of the Apple Configurator? I'm evaluating it for deployment of an in house app to 100 ipods. My tests are returning a simple message stating "Can't Install App" which doesn't help me at all. It would be nice to see a log of WHY it didn't install.

To get the error message look in the Console app and filter for configurator on all messages, when i try to install i get the error...

My application builds and has been signed with my Enterprise distribution cert, like others I can install this app OTA and with iTunes. I'm guessing its a bug with the Configurator app?

You can definitely have different sets of iPads with different apps loaded. When you "supervise" your iPads, you will see that on the left side of the Configurator window there is a "+" sign in the lower left corner. Click it to create a new device group. With this new device group you can choose what apps and configuration profiles you want to install on that group of iPads. Create as many groups as you want to customize the apps and profiles you want on them.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year.Then see if you can connect to the store.

Apple Configurator - can't auto-apply all apps to device group?

Another bit of oddness in the Apple Configurator for managed iOS devices.
1. I can create a folder on my management Mac with all the apps I want to install.
2. And I can import the entire folder into Apple Configurator.
3. And I can Select All apps in the configurator:
4..... Okay, so now I just want to apply all these apps to the devices to be managed. which involves putting check marks next to all apps, all at once.
Except, there's no way to do that?
Am I forced to have to go through the list of possibly hundreds of apps to manually put check marks next to each one?

After some fooling around trying to make groups in the Apps list, I accidentally discovered the solution.
On my non-Apple keyboard, I hold down the ALT key and click on a checkbox in the list. Suddenly they are all checkmarked.
To uncheck all apps in the list, hold down ALT and click on a checked box.

Apple Configurator - can we move VPP license?

We purchase using VPP for 73 iPads. Importing the 73 licenses went OK but we need to move 33 to another Mac that will control the 33 iPads. Is there a way to do this?
Basicallly we initially set up the 73 iPads on one Mac. Everything went well and all iPads are working as they should. Now that everything is set up we wanted to move 33 to a Bretford cart that can house the 33. Apple Configurator was installed on the 2nd Mac, all apps imported via iTunes (Mac is authorized) but we can't import the VPP licenses that were originally installed on the 1st Mac.
Any way to move them?

You may be able get a workaround via apple enterprise support.

Apple Configurator not loading find my iphone app

Have 4G iphones with iOS 6.1.3 trying to load via Apple Configurator app 'Find My iPhone' v 2.0.2. Can load all other apps but this one. Has anyone encountered this problem and know a fix please?

Thanks for responding. I have over 100 iPhones I'm updating for our company- I was hoping that 'Find My iPhone' app would load like all the other app's using Apple Configurator. I would prefer not to install 'Find My iPhone' for each iPhone via iTunes.

Apple Configurator Can't install app configuration profile bug?

Hey all-
We currently use configurator to maintain 30 new ipads. We have updated the IOS on these devices to 6 and now whenever we install a configuration profile blocking people from installing their own app or in app purchases we get a "Can't install app" error message as part of the refresh process. I understand I am using configurator with a drastically changed device and the profile part of configurator hasn't been updated yet. As of right now the only workflow I have found that works is to
1.) Unsupervice the device
2.) Resupervise it
3.) Reinstall apps
4.)Install the configuration profile blocking app purchases.
I have to do this any time I want to do application updates...
Anybody else runing in to this problem?

I loan all of our ipads on a 4 day basis and I never have them all back at the same time to do that type of sweeping change. Before IOS 6 came out I could have changes waiting for an ipad to be returned and they would take effect then. Now if I update an app for one all of the other ipads we plug in will fail (If I'm not here when they are returned). This is a problem apple needs to fix and not something simple I can work around.
I've pretty much just stopped updating apps but once every month or so till this gets resolved.

Using apple configurator can i install paid and free apps onto a supervised ipad?

I have read somewhere that you can only put free apps onto an unsupervised device and only paid apps can be put on a supervised device. Does this mean that an ipad cannot have both free and paid apps on it at once?

You can have both free and paid apps on Supervised iPads. Not sure where you read that you couldn't... We have both paid and free apps on all of our 1,000+ iPads in our school district.

How can I organize groups in Address Book while running iCloud under Lion?

I am frustrated with the new Address Book for many reasons:
It is no longer possible to view groups, list, and cards at the same time, just groups and list or list and cards. This means it is very cumbersome to organize cards to multiple groups, something that wa relatively easy before. Why not allow us to see all three at once and conveniently drag and delete?
The individual cards do not list what groups each card belongs to. Why didn't Apple include a list and a way to change the group when editing cards? Do any of the Apple programmers actually use their own programs to make them useful and convenient?
While running iCloud addresses are duplicated (one set "On My Mac" and another "iCloud"). While it is possible to view only one set or the other, I found that it is best to backup and then delete the "On My Mac" cards and groups. Even then it is confusing to navigate and move cards around.
The iCloud synch with my iPod is working well, but I have to synch my older iPhone 3G with a cable. (will not run OS X v 10.7 Lion).
The iCloud address book is not synching properly with Yahoo, but rather the Yahoo address are being pulled over to the "On My Mac" set that had been removed. Why can't we set controls of pushing or pulling data vs synching, as well as whether whether this is with the iCloud or "On My Mac" addresses?
The new address book format, while cute is too bright, hard to read and wastes a lot of space with white nothingness. Why can't we have a more attractive, easier to read, and functional address book format, with more ability to customize format for advanced users?
I suppose I may have answered my own question: basically it is possible to manage the groups as long is willing to put up with inefficiency and backs up manually by exporting the address book regularly as a backup (because so much can and does go wrong). Does anybody have more insight?

Can you restore groups of apps on your iPhone from your back up

I have had to restore my iphone 4 to factor defaults and then restored from a previous date but can not find a way to reinstall all my app and in the groups that I had saved them into previously.

I knew that but there must be a way of reinstall in the apps as groups or into the groupings. It only makes sense

Apple configuration miss reporting number of paid apps available

AC reports I have 3 codes left to redeem out of 40 and indeed I have three machines needing to load App on. But when I double click on the 3 remaining I am shown a list of codes and their status. It shows correctly which iPads have which code but it claims that the 3 remaining codes have already been redeemed.
This happened once before with 1 code out of twenty and I simply bought one new code on VPP and it installed. I now realise this has happened again and I should have pursued this then. My fear is this is going to be a regular event.

Where in apple community can I find why my app icon is missing from the dock?

I am using Mavericks 10.9.4 on a Mac Book Pro

Check Applications.
However, if you open it from the Apple Menu, then click and hold on the icon in the Dock, choose Keep in Dock from the Options submenu.
Also note the “Show in Finder” option which can show you where something is. Not to useful in this case, but perhaps another time.
