Apple Configurator custom iOS version option

As of last week, Apple Configurator custom iOS version option seems to be failing out.Previously we were able to install or upgrade to iOS 8.1.3 instead of iOS 8.2 until we have tested applications to confirm they are working on the latest iOS version. When using the custom iOS version, it fails out during the iOS install issue.
It also appears the iTunes will no longer let a device be restored to the 8.1.3 ipsw either.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Dear HyperNova,
Firstly I thank you for your prompt reply to my question. However I do object to your response that you "seriously doubt anyone from Apple would tell me that" - are you seriously questioning my integrity that I would post that if not true! It is no wonder that people shy away from posting on forums when they get that sort of response.
I was advised by the support person I spoke to that it was intended for developer previews but that I could try it for earlier versions of iOS. It may not be a "supported' feature - but I WAS advised by Apple support that I could do this and it worked.

  • Apple configurator with ios 7.1

    Hi,
I realized for a client deployment 170 ipads Air in ios 7.04 and 7.06 no problem with appleconfigurator.
Since the arrival of the ios 7.1 the following difficulties arrived (even putting it all updates):
-impossible to avoid a startup screen
-impossible to attach automatically a wireless network
-impossible to install in automatic mode (after deployment) profiles configurations
Since the last update ios 7.1 I must be enroll all the ipads in 2 stages for completion, in addition to manipulations joining the wireless network, why? How to go back one step?

I've just seen this message for the first time and it's showing on 10 devices.
What I really love about Apple Configurator is the copious amount of context driven help offered to you.
"Unable to send ClearPasscode command to device.
    The device was disconnected.
Check the USB connection to the device."

  • Apple configurator and ios 6.1 cannot install config profile

I'm using the Apple Configurator v1.2.1 to install my enterprise app into iPad 2's. First of all, I am unable to upgrade from iOS 6.0.1 to 6.1.2. It either fails or gets stuck and I have to "stop". My work around is to upgrade via the device (which is actually pretty fast). My big problem is that I am also installing provisioning and configuration profiles, which include files for the app. Every things seems to go ok, the app and all the data installs properly, so does the profisioning profile, until the end where the configurator tells me to "tap device to install profile" but the profile prompt never appears on the iPad. The iPad goes into setup as if it's a new iPad and the config profile nevers gets installed. I do get a warning saying it can't install the profile. I'm forced to update the configuration manually. I'm updating about a dozen each time, so it's starting to get tedious as well as error-prone. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Use whatever method you wish to update iOS
    Go though,the setup as needed
Then try apple Configurator to install your profiles
From memory updating iOS with apple Configurator
Causes the setup to run like a new device the same if you used iTunes to update
As the complete OS is installed
However it will only download iOS once, providing all your devices are the same
Updating iOS on the device still has a setup but it's only for iCloud
And you'd have to download the (smaller) update each time
I would think it is the iOS update and setup that's causing your profiles etc
to fail there maybe to much going on at the same time

  • Apple configurator - Custom devices informations

    Hello,
In my job, I have to manage a fleet of iPads and what I miss more is a way to store directly on the configurator informations like SIM serials, PIN codes and PUK codes related to connected device.
It would be nice to have those informations editables within the apple configuration app. It could save the time I spend in opening and searching in a file stored on network. It must not replace a safe saved file on network but it would be a great help.

  • Apple configurator and ios 6

I  have updated my ipods to iOS6 using Apple Configurator.  Now it won't put any apps back on the device.  They are supervised, but it wiped everything clean with the update.  How can I get it to take the profile and apps after the update?  All the ipods now act like a brand new device and don't have any profiles on them.  Even when I hit refresh in apple configurator it just says Device running newest software.

You might want to try posting in the following two forums:
    - iPad in the Enterprise
    - iPhone in the Enterprise
Since Enterprises use the iPhone Configuration Utility.

  • Can I prohibit students from setting a Passcode Lock in Apple Configurator with iOS 7?

I manage 120 iPads at a high school and am running into an issue with the iOS 7 update.  Students now have the ability to go into settings and set a Passcode Lock which will be a hassle once they realize this.  Does anyone know if Configurator has the ability to prohibit students from having the ability to set this?  They also have the ability to set restrictions codes but I'm assuming I'll have to go into every iPad and set this myself to cut that off before it becomes a problem.  I just can't find a way to do this for the screen lock code.

Sorry, but there still seems to be no way to block someone from setting a screenlock passcode.

  • Apple Configurator insisting new iPads should update to iOS8

I am in a tricky situation and am somewhat frustrated.
My school have bought new iPad minis. I am currently running OSX 10.8.5. When I go to prepare them, it is insisting on them trying to update to iOS 8. The do not update option is greyed out unless I select unsupervised, which I don't want.
The problem is iOS 8 needs Apple Configurator 1.6. This in turn needs OSX 10.9 Mavericks. I have tried to update it but it warns me that 10.9 supports OSX Server 3 and unless I purchase an upgrade for Server 3 my server will be disabled.
I find this ridiculous for a number of reasons.
    1. Why is it trying to update to iOS 8 when my version of Apple Configurator can't handle it?
    2. Why do I not have the option to not update to iOS8?
    3. Why to allow me to use the iPad minis that had I plugged in before iOS8 came out would work perfectly fine, do I have to buy an upgrade to retain the functionality on the server that I have now?
    4. I should not have to make the choice between getting my iPads setup or losing my server functionality.
If anyone has any solutions to this I would be very grateful. At the moment I have 16 iPad minis sitting there not used because Apple Configurator is refusing to set them up.

I had the same problem.  I finally found the solution:
"Hold down the Option button when you Click on the Devices menu in Configurator.  You'll get the option for Edit Custom iOS Versions and then you can point it your *.ipsw file. "
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6544047
I found the iOS 7.1.2 .ipsw files here:

  • Link to Apple Configurator 1.6

Greetings. I need to run Apple Configurator, but the version in the application store is not OS X 10.9 compatible. I have tried searching the Apple downloads for it without success, and chatting to their support has not yet revealed it. I need 1.6.
Does anyone know where there might be a working link to download this version please?

This new AC 1.6 seems to be taking more time than 1.5 because of more forced processes.
If users of AC want to do all of this restore and re-applying of iOS let be an option or let users that want this to happen do a few mouse clicks to make it happen. They should not force this on all users of AC 1.6.
Someone at Apple was not thinking fully of a school  scenario where time is important.
Check out and Check in should only move user files and that's it.
iOS should be left alone and Apps should stay.
This is a pilot program for us, if it stays this way, iPads will not be recommended.
Maybe look for some Chromebooks and Apps.
Hope Apple looks at these posts and takes them into consideration.

  • Apple Configurator issues with 7.1

    Hello,
I'm using the latest version of apple configurator 1.5, with IOS 7.1. Since the latest update I'm no longer able to restore backups to any iPad. This was all working fine with the previous version of apple configurator and ios 7.0.6.
The error I'm getting is just "backup cannot be restored". I've taken and attached a screenshot of the Console but these errors mean nothing to me...I hope they make sense to someone.
I've tried creating many different backups and even a very slim backup with factory default settings will not restore to iPads.
    Please advice
    Thanks!

    Chadd,
I think this must be something on your computer specifically. I attempted to restore an IPad (to make sure it was working post 1.5) and did not encounter an error. Hope this helps.

  • IOS version on supervised devices (Apple Configurator)

When preparing supervised devices in Apple Configurator, are we forced to install the latest iOS on our devices? (The "When update is available" option is auto-selected and can not be changed)

    Hi claes.jacobsson,
Unfortunately, yes... when you supervise a device you are forced to update the iOS to the latest version.
    Hope this answers your question.

  • Recently updated MBP and Apple Configurator. Since updating the Update iOS option for Apple Configurator forces me to update the iOS. Thoughts?

    I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)
Processor: 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
OS: OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1
    Apple Configurator
    Version 1.7.1 (550)
Since upgrading both the OS and Apple Configurator I can no longer select the option to not update the iOS when I prepare a device. It is currently selected as When update is available. Also the option appears to be grayed out. Any thoughts?

Google maps is now available in the app store and the carrier update that your refering to was for cell data usage while on wifi. It is perfectly fine to do the update. No issues that i had from that update.

  • Apple Configurator IOS version to deploy

Hi, I would appreciate your assistance. I have the latest version of Apple configurator as of 02/12/2014. I have plugged in 3 ipads which are all IOS 8.11 the latest version and clicked prepare but, configurator is now downloading version 8.1.1 and says it will take 8 hours.
How can I download the lates verion of IOS 8.1.1 and tell configurator to use the use the downloaded copy ( where do i place it)?
    Thank You

The only way I know to manually update iPad's iOS is through iTunes. Then each type of device needs a specific version of the iOS.

  • Disable iOS Update when preparing devices from backup on Apple Configurator 1.7

    Hi,
I am preparing a large number of iPads and I have been using Apple Configurator for a long time now. Since Apple Configurator 1.7 i am encountering one particular issue.
But with this new version I am having some problem with the Update iOS feature...
In previous versions, when I would prepare iPads by restoring it from a single back-up, I could disable the Update iOS. As you can see in the following screenshots, when preparing an unsupervised iPad, I can choose Never Update Device, this happens when I do not restore a backup.
But when I restore a back up, I can no longer have the option to Never Update the Device...
How can I restore a backup to an ipad without updating an iPad to the latest iOS version?

I am looking for same functionality --Never update iOS-- but can't make it work in the Configurator.
I tried with a custom iOS selected & supervision switched on  in the Prepare tab.
then in the Supervise tab "never update iOS" is available, and I applied that.
But starting the Ipad after the Configurator wizard makes it possible for the user to do a software update.
    Bummer !
Did you manage to solve this?

  • How can I distribute the free version of Numbers, Keynote, and Pages using Apple Configurator

I am trying to use Apple Configurator to mamnge a set of classroom iPads.  I have figured out how to purchase apps via the VPP account and distribute them, but I can't figure out how to distribute the free versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.  When I try downloading these apps on the Mac running Configurator, they show up as a paid version.  Currently, I have to disable the option in Configurator that removes non-mamanged apps and then install the apps manually on each iPad.  Does anyone have a better option than this.  My hope was to be able to completely manage the iPads by simply pugging them into the Mac.

The apps is not only for iPhone 5c and 5s. its for all apple products that are purchased with iOS 7. I don't believe if you already have the product then update it to iOS 7 that the apps will be free. I believe that you have to purchase the product on or after the 18th since iOS 7 will already be on the products.
Edit...All compatible iOS 7 products activated on or after September 1st, 2013 will recieve the iWork apps for free. So yes he/she will recieve the apps
