Apple Configurator & IPAD 3 enterprise deployment

Good morning/afternoon,
So we are deploying many iPad 3's in my organisation and I have been given the job of deploying these things out to users across the country.  I have a new iMac with apple configurator and I would like to deploy these out, unsupervised, to our users.  It needs to include the latest IOS, several apps, exchange profile and some device lock password policies.  Further down the line I would like to use configurator to complement our Airwatch MDM solution, but that comes later.  So I have got to the stage where I have been able to deploy the latest iOS (5.1.1) and install some apps as well as restore a backup in order to configure wallpaper etc.  The only real hang up at the moment is with exchange mail payloads.  I would like to be able to install all of the aforementioned items/configurations, including email and wifi settings and then hand the iPad to the user.  However when the configuration gets to the exchange mail and lockout password bit in the deployment, it prompts me for the users email and password as well as a screen lockout password.  The problem here is obvious, I do not have the users email or password and even password for lockout of the device, why would I?  I have been given the job to batch configure many ipad's and all I want is for the user to open there shiny new iPad 3 box and then follow the profile wizard to setup their email/pass code and whoalla, customised by the user for them to use.
I simply don't want it to prompt me for this information at deployment time in configurator.  I just want a green tick! Is this achievable? Or do I need to rely on our MDM for this?
Also is there a way to assign a device to a user if it is not supervised?
Thanks for reading.

Just to clarify to use the correct terms, I'm just using Apple Configurator to prepare the devices, 2 different business units, with a set of different default apps.

If you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can get a clue to what it is, and potentially use it, by going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and clicking 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have, or don't want to use, your rescue email address (you won't be able to add/change it until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get them reset (which will be by phone as they need to verify your id - we are fellow users here on these forums).
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
When they've been reset you can then use the steps half-way down this page to add/change rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312 . Or you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

    1. Use the iPhone Configuration Utility or the new Apple Configurator app (in the App Store) to lock down profiles
    2. I'm not sure this can be automated. The human must shut off 3G/4G networking
    3. You can use secure WebDAV to access files on a network share. Your IT department should know if they have this enabled, and it does not involve much effort to get it running. Works like a charm at our school. Folks are happy and can access their files globally.
WebDAV enables any mobile device or wireless computer to access your fileshares.

  • Apple configurator + wireless management

Can I manage an Apple Configurator ipad cart of 32 ipads wirelessly using Apple server?

    Hi Simon,
A device must be Supervised in order to take advantage of all of the restrictions available to MDMs. To the best of my knowledge, Apple Configurator is the only tool that can "Supervise" a device. Once Supervised, then an MDM like Profile Manager can take advantage of all the restrictions and settings available for wireless management.
(from page 19 of the iOS 6 Education Deployment Guide)
Additional settings and restrictions are available to Supervised devices running iOS 6 or later. Once a device is Supervised these restrictions can be configured via configuration profiles that are delivered via Apple Configurator, MDM or manual download. These restrictions include:
Single App Mode - Locks user into a single, specified application. If powered down, the specified application will launch at boot. Consider using MDM to enable and disable this setting for dynamic control.
Global Network Proxy for HTTP - Routes most all device web traffic through a specified proxy server or setting. This setting is applied across all Wi-Fi SSIDs and cellular networks. Install this setting via Apple Configurator in a non-removable profile for strongest enforcement. Consider using a PAC file for greater flexibility with this setting.
Allow Removing Apps - Disabling prevents users from removing apps from the home screen.
Allow Use of Game Center - Disabling removes Game Center icon from the home screen. Use this setting in conjunction with disabling both Allow multiplayer gaming and Allow adding Game Center friends to completely disable Game Center on supervised devices.
Allow iMessage - Disabling removes Messages icon from the home screen.
Allow iBookstore - Disabling prevents access to the iBookstore while allowing use of the iBooks app for reading books and PDFs.
Allow iBookstore Sexually Explicit Content - Allow prevents access to adult content from the iBookstore.
Allow Configuration Profiles Installation - Disabling prevents users from manually installing configuration profiles directly on the device, which includes enrolling in an MDM server.
Is there another way to "Supervise" a device without Apple Configurator?

So we just got a new Macbook and I also installed the apple configurator tool. I'm using it to prepare the iPads for deployment and it won't let me prepare them? It gets an error stating "retrieving iOS info from apple" then it stops and says "internet error". My Internet connection is fine with the Mac-book. It shows the iPad is listed under the Prepare logo up top as 1 but under supervise none are shown. Although it does show itself in iTunes. Also the profile I created is fresh and has no errors. We have tryed nearly everything I cna think of and online forums are not giving us to much info on this error.

A wag at this.  A port issue?
    "Apple Push Notification network setup
When MDM servers and iOS devices are behind a firewall, some network configuration may need to take place in order for the MDM service to function properly. To send notifications from an MDM server to Apple Push Notification service, TCP port 2195 needs to be open. To reach the feedback service, TCP port 2196 will need to be open as well. For devices connecting to the push service over Wi-Fi, TCP port 5223 should
    be open."

  • Ipad deployment and apple configurator is slowing down

I'm new to deploying iPads and have loaded about 50 so far with 200 more to go. I loaded 30 in my cart but after about 20, apple configurator is running so slow  especially when I get to the assign mode. And actually right now, the configurator program opens slowly. What did I do wrong and how can I fix this? Please help as I need to have these done by Tuesday.

See if the IOS 8.0.2 update helps.

  • Apple configurator - Passcode Restriction saving on one ipad but won't save on the others

I have read a few different posts about the ipad restrictions passcode not transferring to the rest of my ipads but can’t understand why it saves on one of them ?
I have 2 cabinets with 10 ipads in each both linked up to an imac using Apple Configurator.
On iPad One I’ve set up the available restrictions within profile, added apps, changed wallpaper/background etc and the enabled restrictions using a passcode on the actual device and backed up.
I then apply the backup and profile to the remainder 19 ipads and everything looks fine except enable restrictions is set to off on all of the 19 ipads.
So I think this can’t be a setting that’s transferable. I then un-tick Automatic Refresh in Preferences and go through all 19 ipads and enable restrictions manually choosing the exact same passcode for all devices.
I plug them back in and refresh the devices. All 19 loose their passcode except for ipad one ?
Why does ipad one save this setting yet all other 19 devices cant save theirs ?
I intend of giving out the 20 ipads for public use but can restrict users from going in to settings, then reset and erase the device back to factory settings.
This seems like a basic requirement for anyone deploying ipads for public, business or education use.
Is there a smarter way to do this that I a missing?

    HI nsdjoey,
    Many thanks for your reply.
Hopefully this will be an update within Apple Configurator soon. The configurator has the potentail to be a great tool but lacks soem really basic features.
I'll take a look at making an encrypted backup in iTunes, although none of my iPads are showing up as devices within iTunes. Maybe becasue they are in supervise mode ?
Also just noticed that iPad 20 is not appearing in the Configurator even though its conected and lit up in the sync cab. I've change leads and ports in the cab but getting nothing.
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Why is apple configurator is not recognizing my ipad?

Apple configurator is not recognizing one of the Ipads that I am deploying......any ideas???

If you look in Windows Explorer (if you are on a PC - I don't know where to look on a Mac), when you select a Photoshop file does it have the right Icon, or does it point to a different application?

  • Software deployment using Apple Configurator

    Hello,
We are going to be deploying MacBook Air computers to our teachers and I was wondering whether anyone has used Apple Configurator to manage and supervise sofware deployment.  I have searched these forums and I've seen a few tutorials that show AC managing mobile devices.  I do intend using AC to manage our iPads (used by some of our teachers).  We are primarily a Windows environment, however, this year, some of our teachers have opted for Macs and I'm trying to find the most efficient way to manage all these devices.  Any advice or suggestions would be most helpful.
    Thanks,
    CAS

Yes, an MDM is your best bet. If you aren't currently using an MDM and want to try one out, there is a free MDM solution by Meraki called Systems Manager. http://www.meraki.com/products/systems-manager/ . They have a location feature that might help you. The MDM can also allow you to lock the screen or do a remote wipe to keep the thief from accessing the data on the iPad.
You can also have your users sign up with the Find My iPad app http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad.html to help locate a stolen iPad.
As ryanm512 said, if you Supervise your iPads in Apple Configurator the iPads can only be unsupervised using the computer that Supervised them.
However, everything is out the window if the thief resets the iPad when its not connected to a network. Once wiped clean, the MDM and Find My iPad won't work.

  • Restoring iPads through Apple Configurator

We are a library that has 8 iPads that we are trying to set up through Apple Configurator. Everything has been working well so far, but we've been having problems with the check in/out function. The iPad starts the restore process as it's supposed to, but it does not complete (on any of our iPads). The screen turns off and the spinner appears briefly, then the Apple logo appears on the screen. Up to this point things seem fine, but then the apple logo dissapears and it looks like the iPad has turned itself off. It does not turn on again, even after several minutes. I can turn it on manually at this point, and then the restore process will finish correctly. But there is no way to restore without having to turn the iPad back on manually in the middle of the process. Has anyone had this problem with Apple Configurator before? Is it just a bug in the most recent version (we didn't have this problem up until a few weeks ago).
Our iPads are running the latest version of iOS (6.0.1), and the Mac has the latest version of OS X (10.8.1). Apple Configurator is version 1.2.1. Thanks!

create and deploy a backup that doesnt have epub metadata in it.
if you have a restore image with the same UDID as the device and the one of its previous backups, the problem is you have itunes checked to sync books when you imported the backup into config'erater.
if you import a backup of a device with no .epub location data, then cant put them on there
you may also be able to go into itunes and delete the appdatastore content for ibooks, ensure the sync option for ibooks is unchecked, construct clean backup, import, deploy.

  • Master iPad-Apple Configurator

I am trying to understand the Apple Configurator to help the staff at my school, as we do not have an ITS based on campus. With everything that I have read, watched, downloaded, etc., am I understanding correctly that:
    1. a Master iPad must be set up first? You cannot go back and make one or "redo" one?
    2. if the Master iPad was set up WITHOUT supervision, then the rest of the iPads cannot be set up WITH supervision afterwards?
    3. if the Master iPad was set up WITH supervision, then the rest of the iPads can be set up WITHOUT supervision afterwards?
I was trying to work with the iPads (cart) today as I was needing to use them this week, but I don't know if the initial setup (performed by someone else, but not sure who) was done properly. And so, now I'm afraid I might have messed things up or maybe if the initial wasn't done properly, then it's not working the way I need it to.
Is there a website (besides Apple) that would also provide some top notch help for educators?
Thank you for any help anyone can offer!

    1. a Master iPad must be set up first?
You cannot go back and make one or "redo" one?
It's best to start with a fresh system. If you start with an existing system you run the risk of getting things on it that you did not realize ie. web browser history of some **** site.
    You can if you want.
The normal way is to wipe the machine clean.  Setup to support your MDM. install your software.  Go on to iPad and configure apps you like.  Backup machine for master copy.
    2. if the Master iPad was set up WITHOUT supervision, then the rest of the iPads cannot be set up WITH supervision afterwards?
    3. if the Master iPad was set up WITH supervision, then the rest of the iPads can be set up WITHOUT supervision afterwards?
In practical terms, using VPP program requires you to set up the device in supervisory mode.
I find this apple site very useful.
    i'd watch this video:

  • HT6029 I get error 3194  with Apple Configurator when trying to prepare my ipad

    Hi,
I am testing out Apple Configurator 1.4.2 (iTunes is up to date, as is Mac OS, at 10.8) for deploying profiles to an upcoming iPad fleet. I have run into two issues:
    - With an iPad2 running iOS7, and the "Supervision" option set to "ON", the Configurator downloaded iOS 6.1.3 successfully and tried to apply it, failing with the error 3194
    - With an iPad2 running iOS6.1.3 with the same options as above, it failed also with error 3194 and bricked the iPad. Restore also fails
Does anyone know what is causing the error 3194? I have run through Google and all it says is that the system cannot contact the Apple Server, but if I downloaded the updates successfully this can't be the issue, can it?

I have an Apple Configurator install that wont recognize an iPad when I attach it via USB.  I cant prepare it or refresh it.  It was supervised.  I get an error message that says "policy does not have correct profile data".   At some point there was a mismatch between the profile on the iPad and the MAC server.  The profile on the MAC server has been deleted and the iPad has been erased and reset to default.  I need to be able to get Configurator to recognize this device to prepare it for deployment and issue Apps to it.   Please help!!

Run the application 'Terminal.app' which you will find in '/Applications/Utilities' on your Macintosh.
Type this into it: defaults delete com.apple.configurator PreprationSavedPolicyDefaultsKey
    Hit the return key.
If you get no error message, it worked, and you can quit the app.

  • Apple Configurator: The configuration for your iPad could not be downloaded from organisation . Invalid Profile.

    Good afternoon,
I am really struggling with a deployment of 10 iPad Minis.
The iPads are brand new and I have downloaded and installed Apple Configurator onto our Apple Air laptop.
I have configured Apple Configurator in the following way:
    Under Prepared:
    Settings
Name is ticked with 'Number sequentially starting at 1'.
Supervision is ticked to on, Allow devices to connect to other Macs is also ticked.
Update iOS is set to "When update is available". Erase before installing is ticked.
Restore is set to "Don't restore backup".
No profiles are listed in the profiles section.
    Apps
I have copied in some appropriate apps.
    Setup
Skip: Restore, Passcode, Siri, Touch ID, Apple Pay, App Analytics all ticked.
I have not configured Device Enrollment.
In "Configure Settings..." Device Enrollment is not configured.
After preparing my iPads, they all connect and prepare correctly. When I select any iPad and unlock it, the following happens:
    Hello, slide to setup
    Select language, UK selected
Select Your Country or Region, UK selected
Choose a Wi-Fi Network, correct network selected and authenticated
    Location Services: Enabled
Configuration, "<organisation> can automatically configure your iPad". Apply Configuration or Skip Configuration. Apply selected.
Configuration, "The configuration for your iPad could not be downloaded from <organisation>. Invalid Profile.
Apple Configurator is showing no errors, have tried Supervise>Reset, makes no difference.
Have skipped configuration and erased iPad before trying again, same problem.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

  • Is it possible to pre-configure the iPad keyboard settings using Apple Configurator or iPhone Configuration Utilitity?

I have to configure 20+ iPads for events that are sometimes in French, sometimes in English, sometimes both. It is important that I can preset the keyboard settings to allow multiple languages (for example). I've been looking in Apple Configurator and iPhone Configuration Utility, and I can't find where I can set that kind of settings during deployment.
Is there a way I can manage all the settings of the iPads without having to go through each iPad to make sure the settings are ok for my event?

Order Management provides you with the ability to import ATO and PTO configurations from legacy systems or EDI. In your case, you should define the ATO/PTO model first and then import the order and configuration selections from the EDI.
The order import will let you create an Order even if the selections are invalid.
You should then programmatic book and progress the order (using Order actions api).
If the configuration is valid, then the API will generate a * number (ATO item), create bom/routing as appropriate and place that item on the sales order.
If the configuration is invalid, it won't let you book the order. Once you have fixed the invalid selections/configurations, you will be able to book and progress the order.
    See http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/A89549_01/acrobat/115omapi.pdf for details.
Also refer to the "Importing Configurations" section in Oracle Order Management Suite White Papers [ID 113492.1]
