Apple configurator - rearranging icons on supervised devices

I have set up 3 test ipads to try and understand the power of Apple configurator before rolling out around 20 further ipads with an identical layout..
I now have all 3 ipads loading with one profile and a bunch of free apps. The problem is all the app icons are across 3 different pages on the ipad and i want to tidy them up so they appear on just the first 2 pages of the ipad. I also want to arrange the icons so the most popular ones are on the first page.
When i try to rearrange the icons on one ipad then re-connect it, the ipad reverts back to the old display of icons spread across 3 pages. I guess this because it reverts to the previous saved profile.
I can't seem to find a way of turning off the supervision temporarily to allow me to arrange all the icons in the way i want, change the background imagae or make any small setting changes on the ipad to be able to roll those changes out to all the other devices.
I feel like i am missing something ?

Hey Rookeydooks,
Sounds like you have Apple Configurator set to automatically refresh when you connect iPads. To turn this off (in Apple Configurator 1.2.1), in the menu bar go to Apple Configurator -> Preferences. On the General tab, uncheck "Automatically refresh". This way, the iPad won't automatically revert back to the saved supervised backup.
Once you make your changes, you should then create a new Supervised Backup. After that, you can go back to Apple Configurator -> Preferences, and check "Automatically refresh".
Hope this answers your question!

I'm using Apple Configurator 1.4.3. I was wondering if there is any way to install multiple profiles on to multiple devices at once.
Right now it only gives you the options of installing multiple profiles on one device OR one profile on multiple devices.

  • Apple Configurator - Passcode - Grace Period for Device Lock

    Help.
I am using 40 new iPads in a classroom, using Apple Configurator. I set a passcode to the student profile, and the Grace Period for Device Lock is set to 4 hours. However, every time the iPad is locked, it requires a passcode to unlock it, even if immediately turned back on. The grace period function is not working. Anyone else have a problem with this?

    HI nsdjoey,
    Many thanks for your reply.
Hopefully this will be an update within Apple Configurator soon. The configurator has the potentail to be a great tool but lacks soem really basic features.
I'll take a look at making an encrypted backup in iTunes, although none of my iPads are showing up as devices within iTunes. Maybe becasue they are in supervise mode ?
Also just noticed that iPad 20 is not appearing in the Configurator even though its conected and lit up in the sync cab. I've change leads and ports in the cab but getting nothing.
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Apple Configurator doesn't see my device

Okay so when I plug my ipad into my imac I see via iTunes, which is all good and well. I just downloaded Apple Configurator this week and thought since we had two ipads at the school I should try this out in case we decide to go to a 1-to-1 environment with these. The first one I plugged in was straight out of the apple box brand new and it worked great. I played around with some settings and checked it out to a teacher. The second one had been in the hands of a teacher for a couple of weeks. I plugged it into the imac and bam it pops right up in iTunes. I click Apple Configurator and bam, it is lost in iTunes and nothing shows up in Apple Configurator! I did an Erase All Content and Settings, and still nothing. If I can keep Apple Configurator out of the picture the iMac will see it just fine, but as soon as I start AC it completely disappears, it doesnt' show up in Finder now!
If anybody has any fixes for this I would love to hear them.
    Thanks

ok, never got the Apple TV to work wirelessly, but ended up moving an AP Express to the TV and plugging in the ATV to the e-net port of the express. not really the way I wanted it to work, but it does.

  • Explain to Me: Supervision within Apple Configurator

I do not fully understand the "Supervise" aspect of Apple Configurator.
Does supervising a device give you Over the Air capabilities you do not have without supervision? Can you then push apps to supervised devices accross the country that you could not otherwise do without supervision?
    The Apple Configurator Manual reads:
"Set Supervision to Off if you want to configure a device once with Apple Configurator. Set Supervision to On if you intend to maintain control of a device on an ongoing basis by reapplying a configuration regularly."
What does it mean by "intend to maintain control of a device on an ongoing basis"? I plan on centrally configuring many iPads and shipping accross the country. I want to have the ability to track them and it would be nice if I could have them install apps from afar if need be...
But  I also read "when you configure a supervised device, you can't supervise it or sync it with any other computer running Apple Configurator or iTunes."
Does this mean that if I supervise a device and send it thousands of miles away to a teacher only to discover it is missing a few apps, the teacher will not be able to download the necesary apps?

Thank you very much. So far I've been asking about MDM in the context of a prolonged program. However, right now I am also confronted with a short term problem that I could really use your knowledge for:
I deployed 28 iPads yesterday to one location. We configured them manually and only installed 3 apps on each one, all of which were free. We did not use VPP or Apple Configurator with it, because we do not have a mac yet and are only at the beginning steps of the program.
However, those 28 iPads will now need to have potentially 300+ apps on them, and we need to send them redemption codes via the VPP.
Sending them URLs via email and requiring them to click each one would be devastatingly burdensome.
Is it possible for me to create a meraki account on my PC, have my teacher "enable Systems Manager on his devices" allowing him to "securely connect to Meraki’s cloud, enabling me to deploy applications."? In other words, will Meraki be able to use VPP codes and send entire packages of apps to all 28 devices without Apple Configurator? What would the teacher have to do on his end on his iPads?

  • Software deployment using Apple Configurator

    Hello,
We are going to be deploying MacBook Air computers to our teachers and I was wondering whether anyone has used Apple Configurator to manage and supervise sofware deployment.  I have searched these forums and I've seen a few tutorials that show AC managing mobile devices.  I do intend using AC to manage our iPads (used by some of our teachers).  We are primarily a Windows environment, however, this year, some of our teachers have opted for Macs and I'm trying to find the most efficient way to manage all these devices.  Any advice or suggestions would be most helpful.
    Thanks,
    CAS

Yes, an MDM is your best bet. If you aren't currently using an MDM and want to try one out, there is a free MDM solution by Meraki called Systems Manager. http://www.meraki.com/products/systems-manager/ . They have a location feature that might help you. The MDM can also allow you to lock the screen or do a remote wipe to keep the thief from accessing the data on the iPad.
You can also have your users sign up with the Find My iPad app http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad.html to help locate a stolen iPad.
As ryanm512 said, if you Supervise your iPads in Apple Configurator the iPads can only be unsupervised using the computer that Supervised them.
However, everything is out the window if the thief resets the iPad when its not connected to a network. Once wiped clean, the MDM and Find My iPad won't work.

  • Apple Configurator - can we move VPP license?

We purchase using VPP for 73 iPads.  Importing the 73 licenses went OK but we need to move 33 to another Mac that will control the 33 iPads.  Is there a way to do this?
Basicallly we initially set up the 73 iPads on one Mac.  Everything went well and all iPads are working as they should.  Now that everything is set up we wanted to move 33 to a Bretford cart that can house the 33.  Apple Configurator was installed on the 2nd Mac, all apps imported via iTunes (Mac is authorized) but we can't import the VPP licenses that were originally installed on the 1st Mac.
    Any way to move them?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5188
"For supervised devices, if you use Apple Configurator to remove an app from a device, Apple Configurator marks the corresponding redemption code as available. It can be reassigned to a different device supervised by this copy of Apple Configurator for this Mac only. It is not available for redemption by other Macs or iOS devices"
You may be able get a workaround via apple enterprise support.

  • Changing Apple ID in Apple Configurator

Last year I installed Apple Configurator to manage my school iPads (about 100).  When I started to configure and install apps, I registered and installed them all using my personal Apple ID that was attached to my iTunes account on the computer.  I did this with both free apps and payed apps using VPP codes.
My question is:  Can I unsupervised all the devices recollecting the VPP codes to be reused, remove my personal Apple ID from iTunes, and reinstall everything using newly created, generic Apple ID?  Or are those VPP codes now accosiated with the first apple ID?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks nsdjoey.  I called apple and spoke with some people but they told me that the VPP codes could not be reused.  I tried to explain that I am not reusing the codes, (everything above, blah, blah, blah).  I knew there had to be a way so I tested this out with 1 iPad, and now moving forward with all carts.
I am using the same computer that I have tied to my Apple Configurator; it seems that the VPP codes are tied to the computer that is using Apple Configurator.
Hooked up iPad to docking station for Apple Configurator to see it.
Selected that device(s) and in AC Unsupervised the device.  AC then added the VPP code back to the computer (see this in number Identifying box in the app listing).
Opened to iTunes and took a screen shot of all apps downloaded from OLD Apple ID (OLD AI).  Then signed out of this account on iTunes and deleted (and moved to trash) all apps in iTunes library associated with OLD AI.
Created a NEW, generic, Apple ID (NEW AI), verified account, billing, etc.
Signed into iTunes using NEW AI.
Re-downloaded free apps that I needed for iPads.  This was a good time not to downloaded apps that were obsolete or not used.
Went back to Apple Configurator and removed apps from the the Supervision list.
Added the apps back to the Supervision list.  This went to the folder iTunes> iTunes music> Mobile Apps and added all the "new" apps associated with the NEW AI.
in Apple Configurator, I Prepared the new device to all the new apps and profiles.
As far as paid apps, I did have to purchase/ redeem 1 new app that i used for the VPP coded app.  I did this basically to associate the app to the NEW AI.
Now when I update all apps in Apple Configurator, I can enter the password for the NEW AI, and there have not been any issues pushing the VPP codes to the supervised devices.
So granted I did have to spend a few dollars on repurchased apps for the new account.  However $20 is much better than $1000!  And yes it did take some time to do all this, some of it being monotonous.  Moral of the story- whenever you sent up Apple devices for an institute, be sure to create a generic Institute e-mail and Apple ID.  Even if that is one for the entire school ([email protected]) or even separate departments ([email protected])!
I apologize if this list may be a bit confusing but if anyone wants to try this and needs more help, please let me know.  I will update if some problems arise from this switch.
    Thanks

  • Remove "bad" codes from Apple Configurator

Recently I was attempting to install an app onto several Supervised devices using Configurator.  I ran out of codes and purchased more through the VPP system, uploaded my spreadsheet into Configurator and continued trying to install the app.  Instead of redeeming the new codes however, it just hung, I left the computer running overnight in hopes that it would eventually communicate and be able to install the app.  The next morning, I found things were at the same spot with Configurator attempting to redeem the code.  I eventually Quit configurator to get the "multiple validation errors" message.  After trying this a few dozen more times (this was during the ios7 rollover so I attributed some of the issues to that), still with no success, I re-downloaded the spreadsheet to find that codes were being redeemed, and they were appearing greyed out in Configurator, but none were installing on the iPad.
I contacted [email protected] and they refunded my additional code purchase and made all the codes I had uploaded invalid.  Now I have re-purchased the additional codes I require and I have uploaded them into Configurator.  Alas, the old codes are still displaying, some greyed out, and when I try to install the app, it is still hanging.  When I look at the available codes in Configurator, the bad codes that are not already grey state "unable to redeem code in app store" but my iPad does not seem to be able to move on to the new "good" codes.
I want to delete the app out of configurator and try adding it back.  I am not sure if doing this would wipe out the links I already have between the codes that have previously been redeemed with the iPads they are currently on.  I have the original spreadsheet and the new spreadsheet with the additional "good" codes, but would hate to lose the 285 codes that are already working fine and associated with other iPads.

No. The only way is to explain your situation to Apple and request new codes.
A side note... with MDM there is no way to reuse app codes. With Apple Configurator you can unsupervise a device and get your code back on that station. But with MDM it doesn't store the code in a database like Apple Configurator does. So once the code is handed out via MDM is belongs to whatever Apple ID downloaded it.

  • HT5188 Free Apps in Apple Configurator

I am from Australia and we are unable to use Volume Purchasing here. I am a teacher and currently have a class set of iPads that I am trying to set up using Apple Configurator, as the alternative is to set up every device with an individual account, which of course would be a nightmare. I noticed in this article that you need Volume Purchasing to install paid apps. Does this mean that you do not need Volume Purchasing and redemption codes for free apps and it is ok to install free apps on multiple devices through one account without volume purchasing?

Note this comment in the configurator help.  Seems like an issue to me!  I'm going to have to do a test and determine if I'll have an issue with free apps.
Important: Apps installed using Apple Configurator are tied to the device they were
installed on, not to a specific Apple ID. To update apps deployed using Apple Configurator,
you must reconnect to the same Mac from which the apps were installed. Additionally,
you can’t redownload these apps via iTunes in the Cloud. Therefore, it’s recommended
that Apple Configurator be used to install App Store apps on supervised or assigned
    devices only.

  • Apple Configurator: "Policy does not have correct profile data."

I keep getting the message "Policy does not have correct profile data." when I'm trying to prepare new devices in Apple Configurator 1.2.  Existing devices work fine, and I was able to prepare a few new devices before getting this error.  Any advice besides "wipe and restart" AGAIN?

    defaults delete com.apple.configurator PreprationSavedPolicyDefaultsKey
should eliminate the problem, though it will partially reset the default settings in the Prepare pane. Did you delete a configuration profile that had been checked in the Prepare settings?

    2) Individually named iPads for locating and sending commands to wipe, lost mode, etc.. on map per Find my iOS device (we uniquely name them in Apple Configurator either by using the "sequensetially numbering feature", or by creating individual back ups (yes, 450) with the name specified in the image).
    3) Find my iOS device feature enabled in base Prepared or Supervised image (using one of our 5+ iCloud accounts) (image can be created during prepared stage, or in supervised stage) - tried both and have the same issue - which I am getting to...
    4) VPP codes for paid apps (all VPP codes purchased with generic account which is the Apple Admin account for VPP purchases). Apple Configurator is set up under a different/ unique Apple account (i.e. not VPP admin account) and not logged into iTunes for any purchases/ services).
    Issue: Can not do any following senarios;
    A)
         1) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Prepare stage (added during preparing stage)
         2) configure master iOS 7 iPad with iCloud account with Find my iOS feature enabled in Supervised stage (added after supervising, and then backing up that supervised and iOS Find my iOS device enabled)

Result = fail with Apple generic code "4" ; This is obviously due to Find my iOS device feature enabled during image capture.
According to Apple (see Apple Config. Help) the 'Activation lock' (new feature in iOS 7) will not be enabled on a supervised device when an iCloud account with "Find my iDevice" is enabled. Their "help files" seem to imply after the device is Supervised, and a person (presumably and end user) adds thier own iCloud account with Find my iOS device enabled the activation lock is not enabled and erasing/ reconfiguring with Apple Configurator will not cause reimaging probhlems such as requiring the end user's credentials to reconfigure the device using Apple Configurator (i.e. you won't need the end user's credentials).
Needed: To be able to configure Supervised iPads with iCloud account (Enterprised owned iCloud account) configured on the basse image, which has Find my iOS device enabled, and to be able to apply that base image to all Enterprise iPads without generic apple error code 4 issue.

    Hi all
I am trying to replicate these steps in my environment but I am having trouble getting an iCloud backup restored to a supervised device. Can someone clarify the steps? The parts I am unsure on are:
    1) Do you Prepare in Configurator with all the institution owned apps? Or do you install them after restoring the iCloud backup?
    2) After entering the personal AppleID to restore the iCloud backup, the setup wizard prompts for the Institution/Configurator AppleID, there is an option to 'Skip Now'. Do you enter in the password for the institution account? or do you skip that step?
    3) What exactly is on the screen in the 'mini setup assistant' after the restore when you Refresh with Configurator?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

When preparing supervised devices in Apple Configurator, are we forced to install the latest iOS on our devices? (The "When update is available" option is auto-selected and can not be changed)

  • How can I deploy an eBook for a device supervised by Apple Configurator?

I am supervising 10 iPads using Apple Configurator within the Volume Purchase Programme. That works fine with buying apps. Now we want to buy an eBook to have it on all iPads. Apple Configurator shows no way to add eBooks to the iBook app.

  • Prevent App Install with Supervised Devices in Apple Configurator

We don't want our students installing Apps on the iPads in our district. So we created a Supervised Profile which takes away the App Store.
BUT, this also prevents us using Apple Configurator to update or install new Apps.
    Therefore, we need to:
    Remove Supervised Profile > Apply
Update / Install new Apps > Apply
    Install Supervised Profile > Apply
This makes for a lot of wasted time. You would think the Apple Configurator would be able to bypass the Supervision Profile preventing the use of the App Store.
Apple needs to make this possible in the next Apple Configurator update (PLEASE).

We had some students who updated our shared iPad cart iPads to iOS 7. It currently isn't working well with Apple Configurator for us. I used this article and the following website to download iOS 6.1.3 to restore these iPads to a functioning state. Our MDM is currently not updated to work with iOS 7 and I am having activation problems with Apple Configurator so it looks like we will be sticking with 6.1.3 until things get updated.
