Apple Configurator vs. iOS7

Hello,
We have a big trouble here using Apple Configurator 1.4 with iOS7 on iPad2.
We use Apple configurator tu supervise hundreds of iPad2.
I just migrated 50 of them to iOS 7.0.2 and I restored a backup that I created with one of them.
Now all the 50 iPads show me the initial configuration screen (Hello, slide to configure...) whereas the first iPad that I used to create the backup was fully activated (Safari launched, homepage, bookmark, ...)
We found a workaround but this is not acceptable for hundreds of Ipads. If you reboot the iPad, the dock and icons will show up, no more configuration screen. But if I restore a backup again, the configuration wizard shows up again.
We use iPad for online exams here in France, and the deadline is coming soon
Help ?
Thanks by advance,
G Sanchez

Hi jenny142,
Unfortunately yes... many of us have been experiencing issues with iOS 7 and Apple Configurator 1.4. There are several other threads here discussing various issues. Hopefully some of the bugs will be fixed in a dot release of both iOS and AC.... hopefully soon!

  • I'm looking for Windows Apple Configurator for iOS7.

I am looking for the Apple Configurator for Windows that supports iOS7. I need to install a CA certificate on my iPhone and iPad. Does anyone know where I can find the utility, when it will be available?  Are the other options to install a certificate?
    Thank you.

I just noticed that the apple configurator app for MacOS was updated yesterday to add ios7 support, so hopefully the iPhone configuration utility for windows won't be too far behind.
On the other hand, I did just go through the existing profile I had from ipcu 3.62 and made a few changes, removing payload properties that weren't listed in the reference and also were not something obviously necessary.  After that, it seems that the mobileconfig file will apply to an ios 7 device, so that might get me what I need for now.

  • Apple Configurator Issues (ios7, passcode, iphoto)

    Hi
I'm currently working through a series of issues updating a cart of iPads to iOS7 which are connected to a mac mini running Apple Configurator. Below are the issues i am having if anyone can help with them please. If i fix them i'll add to this to help anyone else with the same problems....
Just to mention the Mac, iTunes and AC are all up to date.
There's 32 iPads, on around half of them some of the kids have already updated the iOS over the wireless which means some of the apps now don't work until they are updated to new versions via AC.
    Problems so far:
    1. When the new versions of apps were imported into AC they were all showing as free inc paid apps so the codes couldn't be assigned. FIX: Delete the apps from AC first before you re-import them
    2. Since the latest updates when the cart is plugged into the Mac iPhoto launches to view the photos on them and i get 30+ boxes telling me "Photos in camera roll of iPad 'name' cannot be imported because the device is locked with a passcode. You must unlock the device to import them" A suggested fix is to open Image Capture and set it to not launch any app when the ipads are connected but it doesn't make a difference iPhoto still opens and this message appears every time.
    3. When I plugged one iPad into the mac directly with a usb it updated to iOS7 ok, but when i plugged the trolley in none of them would check in to AC and i got 30+ boxes saying "Apple Configurator could not connect to this device" The problem seems to be that the iPads have a passcode on them...
For the iPads still on iOS6 if the passcode is entered and then plugged in (either via usb directly or in the trolley) it then appears in AC ok. Having a passcode on them didn't stop them checking in before the update?.
For the iPads that have been updated over the wireless (now on iOS7), the problem seems to be when the passcode is entered and then connected a message appears on ipad screen saying "Trust This Computer?"
This is a new message? It's annoying as the cable in the trolley isn't long enough to work on the ipad while plugged and it will be a pain to have to plug them in to usb one by one to turn passcodes off and click this message.
    4. Another issue with passcodes is once updated, the user is prompted to enter a passcode as it does but each time the iPad is refreshed it wipes the passcode and prompts for it to be set again.
If anyone has come across these issues and has a fix please comment

but it doesn't make a difference iPhoto still opens and this message appears every time.
    Begin hacking---
    Take a hammer to iPhoto.
-- Rename the app. You can still run the app by using the new name.
-- If this doesn't work, move iPhoto to a flash drive.
-- The Unix name for the iphoto app is buried in the application bundle.  Rename the unix name. Ask for details.
-- Could write an applescript called iPhoto that returns a good result.  Might be able to cobble this up.  Request.
Don't know if this will give you other toubles or not.

  • Apple configurator with iOS7

I'm having loads of problems with apple configurator since upgrading to iOS7. It hasn't reliably supervised or assigned ipads. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! I can't assign pupils to devices and lots of the VPP codes I have purchased don't work.
I have updated all the software I can.
Is anyone else having problems or can give any solutions!!

I always run a Time Machine backup before updating anything and recommend you run a backup as well. Paid apps should migrate over without any problem. If you have problems with VPP codes not transfering over properly, you can talk to your Apple SE or contact VPP for Education support and they can help you. While I haven't experienced any problems with updating, its never a guarantee that others will have the same experience.

  • Apple Configurator issue or IOS7?

    Hi All,
I've been trying out the Apple Configurator to "Supervise" iPhone 4S's and apply a basic profile. What I've discovered is that any device that I've submitted a profile and is in my Supervised list can be factory restored and it will bypass the activation of the device that was previously locked with an iTunes account.
What normally happens is if a phone running IOS7x is using "Find my iPhone" can't be reset unless you turn the tracking off with the password. If you try a factory restore to bypass this feature, the phone will prompt you after the restore to activate using the creds that previously locked it. This is normal and how it is supposed to work.
But a device that is supervised and has "Find my iPhone" on can be wiped and I have full access to a new phone without needing the iTunes account details.
This seems like a loophole that needs to be fixed but is this an IOS7 problem or Apple Configurator that has the flaw?
    Cheers, Shay

It's not a flaw, it is used for companies that set up supervised configuration profiles on company devices for employees. When a device is set up a supervised and the employee returns the phone you can wipe the phone without the need of turning off "Find my phone." This is to ensure that the company can still use the device! Hope this helps!

  • HT6029 I get error 3194  with Apple Configurator when trying to prepare my ipad

    Hi,
I am testing out Apple Configurator 1.4.2 (iTunes is up to date, as is Mac OS, at 10.8) for deploying profiles to an upcoming iPad fleet. I have run into two issues:
    - With an iPad2 running iOS7, and the "Supervision" option set to "ON", the Configurator downloaded iOS 6.1.3 successfully and tried to apply it, failing with the error 3194
    - With an iPad2 running iOS6.1.3 with the same options as above, it failed also with error 3194 and bricked the iPad. Restore also fails
Does anyone know what is causing the error 3194? I have run through Google and all it says is that the system cannot contact the Apple Server, but if I downloaded the updates successfully this can't be the issue, can it?

  • Apple Configurator 1.6 won't load iBooks

Had tons of trouble last year, installing iOS7 on 25 supervised iPads.  The problems continue with the iOS8 update.  I updated AC to version 1.6 through the app store and went to plug in to my iPad cart today.  I should note that all my iPads are iPad 2.  I was under the impression that they would be left out of the update.  Regardless, AC installs and updates everything except for iBooks.  I get an error when trying to push the app to my iPads.  Anyone else?
iPads are a huge part of classrooms these days.  Would be nice if Apple paid AC a little more attention to ensure that it is working properly the day after a major update like this.

Tell me about it. In the AppStore, Apple actually list this is a bug fix/feature "Apple Configurator 1.6 contains improvements and bug fixes including: 1) Devices are erased before restoring a backup."
I can see why some people may want this, but it throws a complete spanner in the works for us and I can't believe there's not an option for this in preferences. We have 10 iPads that were locked down and restored after each use. Turn around time of about five minutes or less. Now Configurator forces us to reinstall everything each time, we're looking at over an hour. It's crazy. It would actually be quicker to go through the iPads myself and reset everything. Ugh.
However, having deleted the iBooks app from Configurator, at least the devices are finishing without the error, so there's that, I guess.

  • Apple Configurator 1.6 won't connect to iPad

    Hi,
I am having trouble getting a connection over USB with Apple Configurator. When I connect the iPad, AC1.6 does recognise it and nothing happens -->AllDevices(0) is shown.
Tried new cable, iOS7 and iOS8 device. No luck.
Anyone having this issue and a solution?

  • Problems with Apple Configurator

I've been having trouble with Apple Configurator lately. For reference, the devices are not being supervised. They are just being restored from a backup file with four profiles, and two free applications. The backup file is fairly large - coming in at 12.9GB. Using a Mac Mini with around 150GB of free HD space. I'm using a Bretford tray so I usually try to plug in 10 devices at once. This has worked in the past and have only recently run into problems since the update to Configurator 1.4.2 and/or iOS7. So, I'm able to to run Configurator with 10 devices plugged in (I've since started only plugging in 6) and no matter what I try I cannot get more than 4 devices to successfully complete. And actually about half the time less than 4 actually complete successfully. The error I'm getting is Code 4 and the description just says "unable to restore backup." It takes about an 45 minutes to complete one device and about double that to complete 10. So getting 10 done at once is a huge time saver. When I'm only getting 4 devices completed and many time less than that at almost an hour, it is absolutely maddening. I've tried every combination of restarting and reinstalling Apple Config and still the problem exists.
I have a constant stockpile of iPads, Minis, and iTouches coming in so it would be extremely greatful if anyone had any tips or advice.
    Additional questions regaurding Apple Config.
    1. Is there any way to install multiple profiles on multiple devices on the newest version (1.4.2)? It seems like the new version only allows you to install 1 profile on multiple devices or multiple profiles on 1 device.
    2. Everytime a backup fails, Apple Config saves that backup in the MobileSync folder buried in the Containers folder. Each of there backups is almost 13GBs, so I'm having to constantly delete them to conserve HD space inorder to run so many devices at the same time. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening or auto delete failed backup restores?
I know this is very long winded but I wanted to get as much on my info out there as I could. Anyway, thanks for any help that anyone can provide!

I recommend posting in the iPhone or iPad for the Enterprise forums

  • Remove "bad" codes from Apple Configurator

Recently I was attempting to install an app onto several Supervised devices using Configurator.  I ran out of codes and purchased more through the VPP system, uploaded my spreadsheet into Configurator and continued trying to install the app.  Instead of redeeming the new codes however, it just hung, I left the computer running overnight in hopes that it would eventually communicate and be able to install the app.  The next morning, I found things were at the same spot with Configurator attempting to redeem the code.  I eventually Quit configurator to get the "multiple validation errors" message.  After trying this a few dozen more times (this was during the ios7 rollover so I attributed some of the issues to that), still with no success, I re-downloaded the spreadsheet to find that codes were being redeemed, and they were appearing greyed out in Configurator, but none were installing on the iPad.
I contacted [email protected] and they refunded my additional code purchase and made all the codes I had uploaded invalid.  Now I have re-purchased the additional codes I require and I have uploaded them into Configurator.  Alas, the old codes are still displaying, some greyed out, and when I try to install the app, it is still hanging.  When I look at the available codes in Configurator, the bad codes that are not already grey state "unable to redeem code in app store" but my iPad does not seem to be able to move on to the new "good" codes.
I want to delete the app out of configurator and try adding it back.  I am not sure if doing this would wipe out the links I already have between the codes that have previously been redeemed with the iPads they are currently on.  I have the original spreadsheet and the new spreadsheet with the additional "good" codes, but would hate to lose the 285 codes that are already working fine and associated with other iPads.

No. The only way is to explain your situation to Apple and request new codes.
A side note... with MDM there is no way to reuse app codes. With Apple Configurator you can unsupervise a device and get your code back on that station. But with MDM it doesn't store the code in a database like Apple Configurator does. So once the code is handed out via MDM is belongs to whatever Apple ID downloaded it.

  • Apple Configurator 1.0.1

The Apple Configurator 1.0.1 update is available from the Mac App Store.
This update improves overall stability and performance and addresses a number of issues, including the following:
Enterprise apps packaged as .ipa files are imported and installed correctly.
Redemption codes for apps that contain a comma in their title can now be imported.
A redemption code may be reused to install an app on another device if the original device is unsupervised and erased by Apple Configurator, or if the app's installation did not complete on the original device.
The redemption code used to purchase an app in iTunes may also be used to install the app on one device with Apple Configurator.
The number of redemption codes remaining for an app is now displayed correctly.
Notes and bookmarks entered into iBooks and iTunes U are deleted when a backup is restored to a supervised device.
The WPA2 password is saved when editing a Wi-Fi profile payload.
The name of a stored backup is saved when edited.
The storage capacity of an 8 GB iPod touch is now displayed correctly.
The "Erase all contents and settings" checkbox on the Prepare pane has been relabeled "Erase before installing".

    Oh well,
Today, I phoned Apple Education / Enterprise / Apple configurator people who claim that by article

You can only configure two things.
"Apple TV supports Wi-Fi and Certificate payloads for configuring network access, including proxy and 802.1X settings.'
It reminded me that living at the cutting edge meant eating thin slices :-)
I'm sure it will get better and beefier with time.

  • Apple Configurator 1.3.1 crashes.  I haven't been able to prepare any IPad with the configurator.

New to this process and we are setting up bays for IPads in an education environment.  I'm able to load a profile (unsupervised) onto an IPad but as soon as I choose supervise and prepare the IPad the Apple Configurator crashes with the error message below.  I'm not sure how to proceed from this - running OSX 10.7.5 and configurator 1.3.1.  The Mac book pro was bought to supervise the IPads and not used for anything else.  Have reinstalled configurator without any luck. Boy, I sure hope you found a solution to this.  THe exact same thing happened top me, yesterday.  I thought it was the updates to the iTunes store and the release of iOS 7.  However, today, it is still happening.  I was partway through setting up iPads for a 1:1 initiative.  The first 11 worked fine, then the strangeness started.    Most of it seemed to relate to the iTunes store, but the worst part is exactly as you describe, and I have the same setup.   MacBook Pro specifically to manage the iPads.  Configurator crashes whenever a device is hooked up to "supervise" even if it is fresh out of the box.  The details on the crash also show the "Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'ACUUnpackFirmwareOperation cannot fail the operation and without setting an error'"
Oh, did I mention I have to have the iPads set up next week?

    Thanks for the reply.

I guess you mean whether I would be able to add one of the iPads to the new AC Mac by putting it in Restore mode and supervising it from that Mac? That will probably work. My problem is, that I've done that with the whole batch (60+ as I said earlier) when moving to a dedicated account within my own PowerBook some time ago. That takes an awfull lot of time, because it involves doing manual tweaking per iPad and adding the purchased apps again (in the Netherlands we don't have VPP so that is a manual process).
I would really rather have the settings transfered and continue working on the Mac Mini than starting all over again.

  • Apple configurator - Passcode Restriction saving on one ipad but won't save on the others

I have read a few different posts about the ipad restrictions passcode not transferring to the rest of my ipads but can’t understand why it saves on one of them ?
I have 2 cabinets with 10 ipads in each both linked up to an imac using Apple Configurator.
On iPad One I’ve set up the available restrictions within profile, added apps, changed wallpaper/background etc and the enabled restrictions using a passcode on the actual device and backed up.
I then apply the backup and profile to the remainder 19 ipads and everything looks fine except enable restrictions is set to off on all of the 19 ipads.
So I think this can’t be a setting that’s transferable. I then un-tick Automatic Refresh in Preferences and go through all 19 ipads and enable restrictions manually choosing the exact same passcode for all devices.
I plug them back in and refresh the devices. All 19 loose their passcode except for ipad one ?
Why does ipad one save this setting yet all other 19 devices cant save theirs ?
I intend of giving out the 20 ipads for public use but can restrict users from going in to settings, then reset and erase the device back to factory settings.
This seems like a basic requirement for anyone deploying ipads for public, business or education use.
Is there a smarter way to do this that I a missing?

    HI nsdjoey,
    Many thanks for your reply.
Hopefully this will be an update within Apple Configurator soon. The configurator has the potentail to be a great tool but lacks soem really basic features.
I'll take a look at making an encrypted backup in iTunes, although none of my iPads are showing up as devices within iTunes. Maybe becasue they are in supervise mode ?
Also just noticed that iPad 20 is not appearing in the Configurator even though its conected and lit up in the sync cab. I've change leads and ports in the cab but getting nothing.
    Thanks for your advice.
