Apple could prove professionalism of FCPX

First off, I'm curious to know what the FCPX promo videos on Apple's website were edited on:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/
I have a sneaking suspicion that it was edited on FCP7 and audio-sweetened outside of FCP.
But the real way Apple could prove the professionalism of FCPX, would be to edit a national broadcast commercial with it. My hunch would be that Apple would never do this with the current FCPX since there's no way to output OMF's, which are crucial to the professional post-production workflow in broadcast commercial production. And any Sound Engineer will state that FCPX's audio tools are not professional enough to conduct a final sound mix. (Can you even input a mixing board into FCPX??)
Matter of fact, Apple probably still shoots their national commercials on 35mm film - since 35mm film is still a professional industry standard and is difficult to beat with HD cameras since 35mm film is a chemical process that isn't limited by the aspect ratio of pixels that digital HD cameras are limited by.
And for final color grading, I'd be curious to see if Apple would be willing to color correct using FCPX's color correction tools. For the most part, Apple's TV commercials are probably color graded on high-end professional Flames and Infernos, which would require the export of EDL's or outputting to tape to transfer to a color correction suite. Why tape? Because professional post-production facilities are critical about retaining the highest quality possible. Although there are Uncompressed 4:4:4codecs out there, sometimes transferring to tape helps retain higher quality and is a quicker way to transport files rather than dedicating TBs worth of an Uncompressed 4:4:4 codec onto an external harddrive. Also, the moment film dailies are digitized, there is an immediate quality loss because digitizing takes and reduces the chemical processing of film, and confines it to a digital pixel-to-pixel ratio.
At any rate, it would be an interesting challenge to see if Apple would be willing to edit an entire national TV commercial in FCPX. With the discontinuation of the entire FCP 3 Studio and releasing FCPX with claims that it is professional, Apple is essentially saying that FCPX is the replacement for the entire FCP 3 Studio, and thereby, is claiming that entire professional project can be edited, color corrected, and sound mixed within FCPX.
This is a bold statement, and I'd be interested to see Apple try with the current version of FCPX, what normally requires entire post-production facilities and an army of post-production specialists. But if it can be done, then that most definitely puts FCPX on a whole new orbit and with a national TV commercial on it's reel, I'm sure more professionals would re-consider ditching the FCP pipeline.
FCP -- RIP 2011

Maybe Creative Cow's podcast stating that the BBC is dropping FCP and looking to secure 20,000 seats for Premiere CS5.5 based on the release of FCPX could be assuaged if Apple could show how FCPX could be incorporated into a professional post-production workflow.
I honestly do not think they care... in the least. They are looking to the future, and this is not really a dig on Apple, just business for PROFIT.
Now with FCPX you basically have a iMovie on steroids (again not a dig just fire up iMovie and tell be it is not about the same at the core of editing) and believe it or not if your shots are pretty clean with good audio you can do some pretty good editing with just iMovie. But when people wanted a second video track they were moving on. I have worked for years with iMovie and the iMovie community when we "lost one" it was generally to Final Cut Express and there is a HUGE learning curve.   The new Final Cut X takes this out of the equation.
So what? You lose what 100,000 people that were paying something like $1,000 a pop for FCS?  Compared to picking up millions that can do "pro" work for a mere $300.  Easy math if you are in business to make money.
We went tough this with iMovie 8 and people left in droves or went back to imovie 6.  There are TONS of people that still use iMovie 6 to this DAY.  Heck Apple put it online so people would shut-up about it.
Down the road in a year or two the Pros that stayed will be singing the praises of FCP XI and there will be 100,000 people with a bad taste in their mouth.  I am just glad I did not spend too much time learning Color or Soundtrack or have a video business that expects me to make a decision to stay or go.

That is a nonsensical request. If it could be installed then that would not prove that it could not be installed.

  • I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time  Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on  what other external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and  how to configure that disk

I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
    what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
    how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
    the Fusion virtual machine.

If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas  series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it.

so basically i want to know whether or not apple could do something to find it

There is no way to remotely track or disable an iPod nano, either for you or Apple. As it can't connect to the Internet on its own, Find my iPhone isn't available for it.

I just had this problem as well and spent quite a bit of time reviewing all of the suggestions/ideas/comments, and since I am not that tech-savy I remembered this "suggestion" from the UK show The "IT  Crowd" which was "Have you tried turning it off and on again??" (both devices)

Things have really changed.  I can't understand how Apple could release the Lion OS as buggy as it is ?  It's like reliving the nightmare of my PC days and the Microsoft crap !  Do I have to wipe the hardrive before reinstalling Snow Leopard ?  The amazing thing is that when I installed Snow Leopard not a hitch, ever !    My trust in Apple is gone and believe me I will think twice before doing anymore OS upgrades, **** I can go back to the PC for a lot less money.

    Adios baby! Enjoy that PC!

  • I am wondering if apple could make an ipad about half the size? It would be easier to carry and would be easier to read than an Iph one.

I am wondering if apple could make an ipad about half the size? It would be easier to carry and would be easier to read than an Iphone.

Apple's engineers have apparently decided that the iPhone/touch/iPad and MacBook fit the most popular needs.
Did you have a developer related question?

  • How Apple could have avoided all the issues with FCP X

After reading the numerous rants about FCP X, it seems to me the biggest mistake Apple made was naming this new App FCP X. Would everyone be as upset if they had named it Apple Cinema Tools or iMovie Pro? By naming it Final Cut Pro X, they are implying that this is an upgrade to FCP, which it is clearly not. They could have called it FCP 8 which would be even worse. It is beyond logic that Apple would introduce a version of FCP that would not open old versions of FCP projects. I spend most of my time in InDesign, I can't imagine Adobe introducing InDesign X that would not open old ID files.
I think the last version of FCP I purchased was FCP 3, for what I need to do FCE was fine but still a bit confusing. In fact for a lot of the quick corp videos, iMovie worked well. I probably will buy FCP X because I don't have those legacy projects.
It will be interesting to see what the video editing landscape looks like in a year from now. Looks like a real opportunity for Adobe and Avid.

it imports iMovie 11 files and lets you do very nice cinematic tricks to output on youtube ( ! ) and vimeo ..
, so "iMovie 12 Ultimate Professional Edition" would have been more clearly a big fat warning sign that this is luxury app for Home Users but to be avoided by Pros at all ways ..

APPLE PRO TRAINING SERIES FOR Final Cut Pro X.  Diana Weynard -  cannot download requirements from disk - error code -36 appears after about 30 minutes of download time.  Mac Book Pro running OS 10.6.8
I am also using the trial version of FCPX.

You should contact Peachpit about this.
    cannot download requirements from disk
Not sure what this means. Do you mean you can't copy from the accompanying disc? In which case the disc might be defective and you should return it to the reseller. At least that's the usual procedure for this.

  • Will Apple add Chapter markers into FCPX?

I know there are a lot of features that aren't in FCPX that people are complaining about.  I have to say there are some nice features that I do like.  However, the one feature that I really, really need is the ability to create chapter markers.  I do weddings and events, and those videos NEEDS CHAPTERS.  Can anyone from Apple tell us please if in version 10.0.1 there will be a little check box that says chapters?  Cause that would be so nice.

Well I have got the feelign for quite sometime that Apple has viewed optical media as old scholl and has been pushing streaming media via iTunes, Apple.tv and the like.
So it's no surprise that Apple didn't update DVDSP with the last FCS3 updates, and has since dropped DVDSP entirely now.  So now you only can create primitive DVDs and no longer have chapter larkers to perform this taks.
On top of that FCPX seems to be pretty much setup to optimize edits for streaming (online) purposes.  So once again it's not surprising to me that they didn't even bother including chapter markers for DVD creation.
Now the shortsightedness of this is that you mihgt be able to create streaming content with chapter markers.  Which would let one cerate and upload online DVD content as well as coorperate online content.
I still deliver a lot of optical media content so I woudl still use DVDSP anyway, but also don't like the option of having to use Compressor to perform this task.
While I do like the fact that Apple is trying to create a program that enables one to perfom multiple tasks in one application only.  It should be fully functional enough to at least perform ALL basic tasks like audio and optical media creation in that application as well.

  • Why when Apple could not find my problem while it was under warranty must I know pay for support after the warranty is up now that the problem is known it was misdiagnosed?

I brought my macbook pro into the the apple store and left if overnight around 6 weeks ago (warranty expired 3 weeks ago). They did everything that I DO at home and found nothing that was causing my infinite pinwheel. Since the pinwheel is typically hardware related, I want to know why more was not done considering my macbook pro was kept over night. It seems that there is some hardware failing. I reinstalled the OS to help and it did for about 2 weeks, but now, everything is back to pinwheel. I don't care if I have to pay for the Hard drive replacement, but I had zero resolution.
    I already
    - reinstalled OS
    - repaired disk (there were some corrupt areas)
    - repaired disk permissions (which is what the genius did)
    - booted into safe mode and restarted
    - turned power management off for the graphics (this did speed up the macbook a little)
besides my pinwheel, here are a few other symptoms
    - when I click on the apple, it takes 5 seconds for the menu to show. in fact, it takes that long for any menu from the bar to show.
    - when I try to open pages or word, it takes aroud 45 seconds
    - using file open for browseing causes pinwheel
    - when i try switching to an open program for editting (pages and word), the menu does not change to active application
    - clicking on + to add a tab in safari causing pinwheel
    - at log in screen, when attempting to type password, the first character causes pinwheel for over 1 minute.
    - Once I am "logged in" when my desktop begins to show, any attempt to click on the apple logo to pull up system info or start activity monitor causs several minutes of pinwheel.
    - cmd-tab does not work when pinwheel is showing
    - 10 minutes after boot, nothing continues to respond
Now, the one thing I shoudl point out...the macbook was hanging during itunes update and now the persmissions cannot be fixed.
Here is the real kicker. I have bootcamp installed with windows 7. Everything works as designed in windows. No hangs, no freezes, fast apps, good video. In fact, I can listen to itunes, while havingt every MS office application open and multitask in them all with no system degredation.
So my real question that apple cannot answer and maybe a real genius can...How can I get my macbook to run as intended.
Can a Hard drive that is on the verge of breaking run the partitions and operating systems so differently? Is this what happens to the stage coach (macbook pro) at midnight (expired warranty)...it turns into a pumpkin (windows laptop).
Thanks for reading my vent and thanks in advance for any help.

I am very happy to report that my server connection tech, which I called via landline, informed me to : 1. Open Tools 2. Scan down to Clear Recent History 3. Delete All. That was it! Unbelievable! Six hours of searching through the Windows catagories. I checked the results on an internet site, and viola! It was gone! Mozilla Firefox seems to remember the usernames and passwords irregardless of the option window that asks if you if want it to remember the user and password. I finally got in touch with my friend and he said he did not answer yes to the window, even though he was aware of it. No damage. I surely do appreciate everyones' concern in this, now what seems to be, a very simple solution. Cudos to Firefox! Thank-you! P.S. I now have to enter my information at the beginning of any password protected sites...no harm done! My friend is now condemned to the 'user account' site! lol...

  • Is there any way Apple could trace my lost ipod with the help of its serial number ?

unfortunately my ipod might have been stolen, there has to be a way apple can trace it with its serial number rite? all products have a unique serial number cant there be a way to trace where it might be under use, what IP address it was last connected to? Ive installed find my ipod/iphone app and activated the application BUT after updating i realized that the settings for it have changed and you have to reactivate the find my ipod option from the icloud setting or something which is SAD! come on apple can obviously help out on this ! or atleast put up a portal for users to trace their product if such a situation arises. I might not be a computer wizard but im sure there can be a way to trace it with its unique serial code.
I hope apple can do something here!

There is no way to trace your iPod by serial number. Only via the Find My iPod service can an iPod be located, and if you didn't reactivate it, or the finder/thief deactivated the service (or the iPod is off or not connected to WiFi), then tracing your iPod is impossible. Contact the police, if you haven't already done so, and change any passwords for any online accounts you may have used from your iPod (the iTunes Store, for instance).
    Regards.
