Apple Data Recovery?

I am about to return my MBP to the Apple Store for 3rd time for repair to my hard drive. (Technically, repair, replace, and now new one is not mounted.)
The last two times I brought the MBP in, they told me that they could try to extract data from my hard drive by sending it to a data recovery service. The way the tech explained it, it seemed that it would take much more time for them to repair the hd if they did that. She also told me that they would not be able to give me back the bum hard drive if I did not elect for data recovery so that I could send it out myself.
Because I had reasonably recent backups from October, I elected no data recovery. This time, the HD failure also knocked out my most recent backup of my calendar, notes, contacts to my iPod and I am tempted to have them try.
Has anyone ever used Apple's data recovery service?
Did it take weeks longer for repair?

  • Is this a new Apple? Macbook Pro issues - Data recovery.

    I am a long time supporter of Apple (20 some odd years) but things seem different now and I am not talking about the "think different" from the old ad campaigns. Apple is a part of every aspect of my life with my personal machines and gadgets to the 50 some odd machines we use at work. One personal machine is a bad apple.
    I have a Macbook Pro that has had issues since day one. I received it from Apple and there was a dent in the corner of the case. I immediately took it to the store and was told that they do not ship damaged equipment and that it would take 3 week to get a new machine. The machine worked and it seemed to be only a cosmetic issue. I was fine with it - I guess this was my mistake. The folks in the store documented the problem and sent me on my merry way. It was bought at the same time as my wife's machine - a regular black macbook (i tell you this because it is confused within the mix).
    Since that time, I have called on 6 occasions about the MPB, from bluetooth errors, wouldnt wake from sleep, long start up times, firewire issues and now the hard drive has disappeared. All these occasions, I was calling to document the issues and make sure I had the correct fix and on the last call (before the HD failure) I was told that would extend my warranty due to my issues.
    Now I am having the hard drive issue and have discussed this thing with 6 people and everyone is telling me a different story. Some say they can fix it... Some say they cannot... The store said that they would replace the whole machine yesterday but I needed to call the phone support folks and today the store geniuses want me to pay for a new hard drive and the install loosing all the info on the drive. This decision was changed in the store to replacing the drive and giving me the old drive to recover the data. In store today I was told that Apple does not ship damaged equipment... That is cool and out of all the machines that I have bought - I would have to agree - this one was and This MPB is an exception to the rule. Today I was also told that my calls were made on my wife's macbook and I could replace that machine which has never had an issue - I am typing on it right now. There was a clerical issue somewhere. To top all this off all my documenting of the pro's issues were said to be under this wife's machine and I was told that I have only called twice. Basically - I was called a liar.
    This machine is an exception to the rule and I will say with my 20 years of interaction with Apple, This case is an exception as well. I hope that it is not the future of the "consumer driven" Apple. I guess I am just out a couple of grand for equipment and time and a whole slew of code if I cannot get my data back. And it this experience has slightly tarnished my view of a great company.
    Anyone know some great data recovery folks in the Atlanta Area?

    Out of curiosity, any particular reason you didn't secure a proper backup for your machine. Especially because it sounds like a rather important machine (work related perhaps?) and the data on it is also of equal importance. I know in Sacramento there are a few data recovery places that start @ $500 after a $100 diagnostic/consultation.
    I realize, however, hindsight is 20/20. It always is... especially when it comes to data recovery.
    Calling into AppleCare and reporting an issue does not extend your one-year limited warranty, nor does it extend your AppleCare coverage (if you purchased it for the unit). So whoever told you that over the phone needs to recheck their training material and refresh the Terms & Conditions of the agreement. No where on the pages contained within (http://images.apple.com/legal/applecare/docs/AppleCareProtect_Plan_NAen.pdf) does it make mention or stake claim to that "exception."
    Now, having worked in AppleCare (California offices) for several years I can attest that the one exception that Apple will honor is: "Documented in Warranty/Repeat Repair." Even prior to working for Apple, I had a machine covered after the 3 year AppleCare expired because the unit had been serviced under the scope of coverage for an issue that was now occurring again. Apple made it right and fixed the machine, granting me another 90 day coverage extension as result of the repair. To my knowledge that "grace period" after the warranty/AppleCare expires is 90 days from last repair of expiration of coverage window. Don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty confident on that number.
    Regarding your issue, you need to reach out to AppleCare over the phone and attempt to get some clarification. A phone call always starts off with one of two things: (1) a SN# for the product, or (2) a case number. If you were supplying a SN# for your MacBook Pro and the phone agent accidentally logged it under another product then that's not something you should be punished for and now held financially responsible to resolve on your own. Again, though, that's something you need to take up with AppleCare.
    You also indicated that the store wants to charge you for the HD replacement. So perhaps that answers my earlier question if the unit had AppleCare. I take it the unit does not? If it does, why are you paying to replace a defective HD?
    Lastly... I'll agree that Apple doesn't "package, process and ship" damaged equipment from their facilities in China. But that doesn't mean it won't arrived unharmed. There's a lot that can happen between when the box is sealed and then opened by the consumer.

  • Can I get a data recovery from Apple if my iMac was in the hard drive replacement programme and I wasn't notified about it?

    Basically my iMac just crashed and I searched on Google for replacing my hard drive and came across the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program at http://www.apple.com/support/imac-harddrive/
    Which is that Apple is asking all 2009 - 2011 iMac users to return their iMac for a free hard drive replacement because it currently has a fault in it. After entering in my serial number, I see that my iMac is elegible for a replacement.
    I did register my iMac with Apple, but I didn't receive any email about this program and I lost all my recent data because of the faulty hard drive. I never had an issue before with the drive so this just happened out of the blue.
    Is it possible to get a free data recovery from Apple for this? I find that it was a lack of communication that I lost most of my data.

    I completely understand that it's my responsibility to back up my data but I have it set to every 2nd month, not on a weekly or daily basis to back up the data.
    Apple might not be in data recovery business but could they not acquire a third party to do this?
    This is what happened:
    It was on sleep overnight and when I tried waking it, it was lagging badly. So I shut it down and restarted it. I phoned into techincal support to find out whats wrong, but they were giving me advice to reset the params etc. But i think it made it worse because it didnt want to get passed the white start up screen.
    So I phoned back to ask if it's a usual issue with my version of iMac and the man replied that it isn't common and that I should run the disk utility to check the hard drives health.
    I installed Mountain Lion on a USB and started the disk utility. Then it highlighted in red that it's a hardware fault and cannot be repaired by the disk utility. Therefore the hard drive has a serious fault with it.
    That's when I Google'd for a replacement drive and came across the program. The techincal guy didn't even tell me about it or anything.
    If I knew about this sooner, I would have taken it in for a replacement.

    I have recently copied over a folder on my iOmega (Prestige Portable) External Hard Drive with a folder from my Power Book Hard Drive, with the replace all.
    What I need to know is there a way to step back to the point before I copied over this folder?
    Ok so here comes the Dumb bit, I have never set up Time Machine! Yes I know, very stupid!
    So I'm now in the process of seeing if it is possible to step back with data recovery software and if this is possible what do people reccomend! I have tried SanDisk RescuePro but It comes up with a message saying that the drive is too big, I think it is meant for Flash Drives!
    Have I posted this in the right Discussion thread? If not were do you think I would be best to post this?

    FIrst, stop using the drive immediately. If the files haven't been overwritten already, the more you use it, the more likely that is.
    There are several Data Recovery apps for Macs; +Data Rescue II+ seems to be the one mentioned here most often, but others get good reviews, too. I've not used any, so can't say one is better than another.
    I understand you'll need another external disk to receive the recovered files. (But you'll probably need one anyway for Time Machine or other backup app that you'll be using regularly from now on, right? You can use a second internal HD, Time Capsule, or in some cases back-up over your network.)
    I also understand that some of these apps have a trial version that will tell you whether there's anything to be recovered, and perhaps recover a single file, so you don't spend the $$ for nothing.
    Look for +Data Recovery+ via Google, VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com. The last two have user reviews. Just be certain whatever you use is compatible with Leopard.
    And/or, search for +Data Recovery+ in the Using Leopard forum.

  • Data Recovery After Hard Drive Failure!

    Ok, basically, I've got a 2 1/2 year old iBook G4 with a bombed hard drive, and unfortunately, the last time I backed up was around 3 months ago. Here's what happened right before the crash: some applications like Widgets and Safari were acting fluky, and it wouldn't let me open Word documents, so I restarted, because I thought it might have something to do with the fact that i had downloaded the new version of itunes not that long ago and hadn't restarted since. well, when i restarted, the gray screen with the wheel and the apple symbol went on for a really long time, and then the blue screen came up with the cursor, but nothing else happened, and the blue screen just stayed there. as far as i know, the hard drive wasn't making any unusual noises, just the usual occasional soft sounds that my hard drive has always made (there are usual sounds, right?) a piece of information that might be useful is that the hard drive was almost full (it only had about 5 GB left, which i understand is how much you should leave) could this have caused the failure maybe? anyway, i tried using the hard drive as a target and tried getting another computer to recognize it and pull the files off, but that didn't work. so, i brought it into the apple store, and they got it to boot up but using some external hard drive, i think. they tried disk utility, but that didn't see my hard drive. then the tried disk warrior, and that saw it and repaired it or something, but then it couldn't get the drive to mount. so, i'm assuming that because disk warrior didn't work and couldn't get it to mount, then other software like data rescue, etc... won't either. like all computer users, i've got some REALLY REALLY important data on there, and all the data recovery places i've gotten quotes from are pretty pricey. if the drive doesn't require physical data recovery, only non-physical, as i hope, the cheapest is still $350. even so, the person on the phone there didn't seem to know nearly as much as the people at the more pricier places. so, are there any other options besides expensive data recovery? i read something about using dd - a unix thing, but i don't know the first thing about it (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) so i'm not sure i want to risk messing it up even more. and, if worse comes to worst, then i'll use a data recovery place... but can anyone tell me if they've used any of the data recovery companies below, and which ones are good?

    I have read good reports concerning Data Rescue although I have not used it myself.
    Once you get your data back, focus on a regular (even daily) backup routine, because as you know only so well, the question is not if a drive will fail, it's when.

  • Data recovery from Itunes

    I got my Iphone 4s broken last night but I did synced it with iTunes last week. I wanted to recover my data (Pictures, contacts, etc) I have been searching on the web for the solution and did find some data recovery softwares for itunes which let me see my Thumb images of my (Data) but require money to recover them.
    I have an other Iphone 4S with me. Is there any way I can retrive my data directly from the iTunes or I can get it through syncing it with my new 4S?

  • External Hard Drive Data Recovery

    Hello Apple Support Communities!
    I have a Western Digital 320GB external hard drive and it currently has 0 bytes available. This has prevented me from even viewing the hard drive on my finder window. I can only see it in disk utility. I have tried repairing the disk and verifying it but neither has worked in letting me view my files. I use the hard drive for movies and now i can't see them! Can anyone recommend free data recovery software so i can delete a few files so that i can view my hard drive? Thank you!

    I found a way to sort of mount the drive and consequently do a data recovery.
    What i did was highlight the 'iphone-dump.img' and opened it with 'Disk Utility'. Inside of 'Disk Utility', I double-clicked the 'iphone-dump.img' icon and low and behold, it split into two drives, despite it giving me an 'Unable to attach 'iphone-dump.img' (no mountable file systems)' message at the same time.
    I wasn't able to do much with it in 'Disk Utility' from there on, so I opened 'Data Rescue III' and it became available to scan as a 'Virtual Interface' called 'Apple read:write'. I performed a scan and was able to locate my missing photos. It took a while because there were several duplicates of older photos. I think this is because each time I've restored the phone from a backup, data has been placed in a different location on the hard drive. Therefore, it has not overwritten these very same photos that have been on most of my backups for some time.
    I wasn't able to find my missing voice memos from the 'QuickVoice' application though. They appear not to be there. I found the existing ones from the recovery. They must be somewhere surely? Maybe the photos are stored in a different way since the photo application is a default app and 'QuickVoice' is a bought app.   ?

    Hello again,
    Last week I posted a question concerning the error message folowing the Hardware test.
    It was bad sign and I had to take my computer to the Apple service.
    The intern disk had to be replaced and they told me that they can't recover the date ( not in theyr shop)
    How works the data recovery once the disk is out of the computer ? Is there necessarily a "white room" process wich is very expensive ?
    Sorry for this, certainly, stupid question, but I'm not very good in computers ...

    I know it is more than recomended to backup constantly.
    I did so until last february so all my data isn't lost, but for 4 month my external drive was turn off ( can't remember why I did this ) and just before the crash I started a backup wich didn't work ( or rather turned for at least 12 hours but , aparantly didn't save anything, if this is possible...)
    The question was , is there any way to rescue something without going bankrupt

  • Data recovery options if drive not accessible through Target Disk Mode

    I have the classic data recovery question: my computer seems to have failed, and I'd like to save some data. Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Details:
    - Most recent backup was about a month ago to Time Machine (unfortunately, this laptop went off on a long trip and didn't have access to the destination disk, and then when it came home was running very slowly and my wife halted the TM backup thinking it was slowing the computer down). Some documents have been backed up more recently via Dropbox and/or Mozy, but not a couple important ones
    - When booted in Target Disk Mode, no drive shows up on the computer to which I connect it
    - When I boot from an OS X CD, a drive appears in Disk Utility with no volumes on it, and the options to 'repair disk' and 'verify disk' are greyed out.
    - When I try to just start the computer up, it gets to the grey screen with the apple and just spins.
    Questions:
    - Should I attempt anything else myself? I've never learned about Lion's Recovery Mode; can it be used to copy some data off, in the unlikely case that this computer would boot into that Mode? Would any further attempts to boot, etc. potentially reduce the chances of a professional company recovering data?
    - I'm planning to take this to an Apple Store today to confirm that this is indeed a hard drive problem and not a failed mother board or something; is there a way for me to do this myself? In the past I've used Hardware Test CDs from Apple and stuff; I don't know if those still work on modern computers.

    I know I used to have a copy of Disk Warrior, but can't find it and it's probably out of date. I downloaded the Data Rescue demo, but it only got partway through scanning the disk and then failed. It told me to 'clone' the disk, but after about three days of trying still wasn't making much progress on it, so I gave up.
    However, I was able to recover the few important files I needed simply by removing the drive, putting it in an enclosure, and connecting it via USB. After 10 or 20 minutes, Finder gave me a message that said something like, "this disk cannot be repaired, and is probably damaged. You can still access the disk, but copy everything off ASAP because it will probably fail soon." Some files indeed couldn't be copied, but I could copy the things I needed.
    I assume that this is a hardware problem. To confirm, I assume that I can check it without having DiskWarrior simply by trying to reformat it? If it can't be reformatted, I assume there's no chance that it is a functioning drive. Is that right?

  • Data Recovery on External Drives

    I have an external LaCie 200GB FireWire 400 drive, the F.A. Porsche one. While unmounting it before a trip I was in a hurry and unplugged the FireWire cable too soon and it came up with the customary message informing me as such. I paid it no mind as I was in a hurry and I'd done it once or twice before on accident and had suffered no wrath.
    Anyway when I got home this evening I went to plug it in and found the drive unresponsive. I got a message saying I couldn't mount the volume but could initialise it in Disk Utility, so I did. The drive was showing but the volume with my data was gone, or rather it was showing up as "disk1s3" instead of "Rei" as it is named.
    I tried the following steps to recover my data:
    1. Disk Utility: I tried to repair the volume. I received an error saying it could not be done.
    2. TechTool Pro: I did the drive test and it came back as having passed.
    3. TechTool Pro: I tested the volume, found that the index was corrupted. Made sense.
    4. DiskWarrior: I tried to recover it with DiskWarrior. During the recovering process the program became unresponsive and I got the beach ball of doom. After pressing AppleAltEsc I found the program was not responding and highlighted in red. I force-quit the application. I tried again and it proceeded to do the exact same thing. This time I noticed a message stating something along the lines of performance being slowed due to a drive malfunction. I was, once again, forced to force-quit the program.
    5. DataRescue II: I attempted to use DataRescue II to see if I could at least view the files and transfer them off the drive and back them up to DVD so I could format the drive and reload all my data. Though it is visible to Disk Utility, DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro it is not, however, visible to DataRescue II.
    6. TechTool Pro: I am now having TT P attempt to recover the data. I'm planning on letting it run into the night and hope in the morning it will be fine.
    If anyone has any more recommendations on what I can do let me know. I can afford to buy another external to transfer all of my data onto that if I can access it long enough to pull it all off, but I need a program that can at least see the files to grab them.

    By not ejecting the drive before disconnecting it, the partition map was corrupted. Short of professional data recovery, you've covered everything and then some in my "Data Recovery" FAQ. If DR-II and TTP can't recover the data, then you're left with professional data recovery, per my FAQ.
    I presume you don't have backups of the contents on the LaCie. After you recover from this incident, I suggest you implement a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution addressing all of your drives. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.

  • Data recovery on failed HDD

    Hi everyone,
    So I have a rather common problem but I thought I would ask anyway. My friend gave me his MacBook Pro to fix because the HDD failed. The hard drive clicks when the computer is turned on and the computer will also not boot. When the power button is pressed the screen is white with no Apple logo. When plugging the disk into my computer (Using an HDD data transfer cable) the disk is not recognized in the Finder, Disk Utility or the Unix command line. The Mac will not boot into safe mode, single user mode or any others (I tried them all). Another issue that I found rather interesting is it would also not boot from the Mac OS X install DVD. There is some important client data on this HDD and was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on how to save this important data. Also no backups exist and I also cannot access the recovery partition by holding (option) at startup.

    you’ll need to install a replacement HDD (or SSD) into your friend’s MacBook Pro. If your friend’s grey Mac OS X Install DVD is the right one for his model MacBook Pro (they’re model-specific), then you can try cleaning the lens of the SuperDrive to see if that will let the MacBook Pro boot from the DVD. If that doesn’t work, then it sounds as though its SuperDrive will need to be repaired or replaced.
    Those client data are so important that no backups were made of them? Your friend will need to hire a data recovery firm to have a chance at recovering those data — note that their services tend to be expensive, and that they can’t guarantee recovery, since recovery depends upon the state of the disk where those data are located.

  • Data Recovery on Failed Drive

    My son's iBook hard drive died with all his graduate school work on the drive. Apple is going to replace the drive under AppleCare, but we're trying to see how to get valuable files off before sending to Apple. DiskWarrior stalled. It was showing a SMART failure. One local tech shop said they couldn't recover anything. Right now the computer won't even show a startup screen. Are there any software options for recovering data off this kind of drive? Any recommendations on places to ship the iBook for data recovery. My daughter-in-law talked with TechRestore.com -- any experience with them?

    With a hard drive mechanical failure such as you've had the only likely recourse is to send the drive to one of the various data recovery services (some advertise in the back of Mac World magazine) you might locate on Google. Recovery services will be fairly expensive - probably at least $500.00.
    To avoid this in the future you should plan on purchasing an external Firewire drive and make regular backups. Much cheaper and less traumatic.

    Please just tell me i am not Screwed, My 14" ibook G4 was acting up and so I ran the cd that came with it and erased my entire drive INCLUDING my 2005 TAXES that I made with turbo-tax is there any way I can get it back?

  • Completely DEAD iPhone 3GS, Data Recovery ?HELP?

    I have a iPhone 3GS 16GB, The other day it just went off? tried unplugging it from the mains and plugging it back in again, but nothing happened.
    I tried to get it to go into DFU mode, Nothing!
    Plugged it into my Desktop PC, Nothing showed in itunes?
    I had it tested by a local phone shop and they said they did all the scans/checks and whatnot that they could and the iphone is a complete dud!:(
    But i really need the data that is on there?

    Apple does not offer and will not perform any data recovery service.
    A simple google search will reveal multiple data recovery services, if you really need such a service and are willing to pay an arm, a leg, and give up your first born child for that data.
    If the device has been used as designed, it would have been backed up regularly to iTunes or iCloud.
    Simply restore that backup to a new iOS device.
    Contacts and calendars should be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service.
