Apple Discussions

The Apple Discussions site is really difficult to work , not very intuitive ! I have forgotten my master password , Filevault is not locked , I'm running Mac OS X v10.3.9 on a 12 inch Powerbook G4 , how can I sort this out . Help !

Hi Hejira,
insert your install DVD and boot from it (hold down the c-key during boot). Once the installer has started and you selected your language you can reset all passwords from the MENU.

  • How do I delete an Apple discussion account?

I am wondering if you can delete one of your Apple discussion account, so that the username is not longer active for that account.

Moderators can delete the account, but usually do not (you can just let it idle and die).  They usually do not delete *all* of the threads you started, but can edit some that you feel have personal information.  If you want every response you posted deleted, that is all but impossible.

  • "Apple Discussions" links fail in Safari 5.0.3

In Safari when I try linking to a topic from within any Apple Discussions forum, or try any other links from within a forum, I get a blank page. No such problem in Firefox (from where I'm making this post).
Not a disaster, given that I have Firefox, but puzzling.

    Hi Duncan...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies
    Delete all Apple cookies.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
Emptying the Safari cache more often may help also. Command + Option + E
If nothing above helped, Reset Safari from the Safari menu bar. Select the top 7 buttons. Click Reset.

  • How to post a link (URL) in "Apple Discussions"

You can shorten your links (URLs) by using HTML coding.
This is preferable when the URL is very long. Posting the entire URL can extend the width of a post beyond the range of many computer screens. This can make a post difficult to read, as it necessitates sideways scrolling.
This is the format to use:
    <a href="Insert URL Here">Type Title Here</a>
    The quotation marks are necessary.
This link Search Apple Support, would be formatted like this:
    <a href="http://search.info.apple.com/">Search Apple Support</a>
The title can be anything you choose.
To avoid typos, it is helpful to go to the web page you are linking to, and copy & paste the URL from the address bar of your browser.

  • Issue with setting up an account for Apple Discussions

Off and on for 4 or 5 years I have posted questions or responded to them the in PowerBook G4 15" Titanium section. Then a couple of weeks ago I tried to log in and was informed that my Apple ID had been disabled for security reasons. I then created a new Apple ID and password and had no difficulty logging in with that. However, to post in the Apple Discussions I was prompted to create a new account for that purpose. When I filled in the fields, checked the box agreeing to the conditions, and clicked the Submit button, I got no error message, but the "Create New Account" screen reloaded and I still couldn't post. Clicking login just brought up the same screen again. After trying and failing to create a new posting account off and on over a period of a week I finally went to the Seattle Apple Store to see if they could help me. The first employee kindly went through the steps with me three times with the same baffling result. Finally a second employee helped me and was successful on his third try (I thanked him profusely!). However, even he could not identify the problem because no error message ever appeared. Was I trying to use an alias that didn't work for some reason? Does the Other Computer Information field need to be filled in even though it looks optional because it doesn't have an asterisk? Is the secret to get help at an Apple Store? All just FYI.

Thanks, jpfresno. The Apple Store guy also suggested that the alias I wanted might already be in use, but evidently that wasn't the case.
At this point I should clarify that my account issues have been fully resolved. The point of my post is a larger issue--usability of the Create New Account screen. The fact that neither I nor two Apple Store employees could figure out why attempting to create a new account for Apple Discussions repeatedly failed was due to lack of feedback after clicking the Submit button. I would normally expect to see a message like "This alias already in use" or "This field must be filled in" but there were no messages of any sort.

I am having the similar problems, receiving emails with discussion URLS pointing to servers I can't reach:
The following updates have been made since 10/18/06 4:16 AM
Topic "Podcasts wont autodelete" has been updated one time
    http://acdiscuss-stage01.corp.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3321692#3321692
Topic "Problems with sleep mode in 10.4.7" has been updated 2 times

Topic "Aperature fails updating Vault..." has been updated one time

Whenever I get email messages like this they are accompanied by emails that are identical but with references to valid URLs.
In addition, the "update" notifications are bogus. For example, you can see by checking the relative dates of the quoted message above and this post that there have in fact been no updates made to those discussion topics in the intervening time period.
Since these bugs are effectively generating alot of spam, I'm surprised not to see a flood of posts complaining about this.
I did find a reference to the 2nd issue of bogus update notifications previously posted in this archived thread Ghost new posts appear according to My Subscriptions at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=348043.
Also, it has been mentioned more recently in Forum Bugs at

  • Can I use the Apple Discussion software?

I have my own web server and I was looking for some good forum software. I usually use phpBB. However, I started dreaming of forum software that would be great and remembered how much I like the Apple Discussions forums.
I am sure the answer is no, but it does not hurt to ask. Does Apple have any plans to make their forums software available for other people to use?
If this is not the proper forum for this topic, I apologize. It did not seem to fit anywhere else.
    Thanks,
    Jonathan

I agree. I am never sure when to mark something as a question because it may be quick or it may be a hard one and trying to decide who gets credit for what comments seems like a lot more work than I am looking for usually.
You had a definite Question. I do not see the confusion in marking it as such
clearly you did, it certainly was not a statement. Others do the work to help.
Deciding whom to reward and w/ what I think should be part of your work in return.
    Question
n 1: an instance of questioning; "there was a question about my training"; "we made inquiries of all those who were present" [syn: inquiry, enquiry, query, interrogation] [ant: answer] 2: the subject matter at issue; "the question of disease merits serious discussion"; "under the head of minor Roman poets" [syn: head] 3: a sentence of inquiry that asks for a reply; "he asked a direct question"; "he had trouble phrasing his interrogations" [syn: interrogation, interrogative, interrogative sentence] 4: uncertainty about the truth or factuality of existence of something; "the dubiousness of his claim"; "there is no question about the validity of the enterprise" [syn: doubt, dubiousness, doubtfulness] 5: a formal proposal for action made to a deliberative assembly for discussion and vote; "he made a motion to adjourn"; "she called for the question" [syn: motion] 6: an informal reference to a marriage proposal; "he was ready to pop the question"
    Answer
n 1: a statement (either spoken or written) that is made in reply to a question or request or criticism or accusation; "I waited several days for his answer"; "he wrote replies to several of his critics" [syn: reply, response] 2: a statement that solves a problem or explains how to solve the problem; "they were trying to find a peaceful solution"; "the answers were in the back of the book"; "he computed the result to four decimal places" [syn: solution, result, resolution, solvent] 3: the speech act of replying to a question [ant: question] 4: the principle pleading by the defendant in response to plaintiff's complaint; in criminal law it consists of the defendant's plea of `guilty' or `not guilty' (or nolo contendere); in civil law it must contain denials of all allegations in the plaintiff's complaint that the defendant hopes to controvert and it can contain affirmative defenses or counterclaims Source: WordNet ® 2.0, © 2003 Princeton University

  • Question for Apple Discussions Staff re deletion of my post

My macbook died and it had become vital to my daily function. It contained important documents, emails, and much more.
My post was about a working solution to access the hard drive, especially on the day of new years eve. The information posted could be of great benefit to other Mac owners and censorship does them a disservice.
I don't have the luxury of having a second Mac, although I did, a Macbook air, that was sold to a friend.
Please review my post and advise on how it can be reworded as to not violate the EULA.

apple moderators do not care to assist me when I ask for help, hours later.
Apple Discussion moderators can not & do not answer questions in the technical forums. Occasionally they will respond in this Feedback forum.
Apple Discussions is designed to a be a User to User community support portal. There are Apple Employees that work in the forums, but they are mainly here for moderation purposes. The bulk of the help and answers come from community members like yourself who are passionate about Apple products.
There are Hosts, identified with the Purple Apple next to their alias and Apple employees who are identified with the silver Apple. Any Apple employee posters are generally here on a volunteer basis outside of their normal job duties.

  • Unable to Log out in Apple discussions

When I try to log out in Apple Discussions, I get an error message saying cannot find page. I have to shut down Safari to logout. I haven't had any problems before. I did have to change my Apple ID to be able to use my new iPod Touch recently so would that have made a difference, or is it something Apple Discussions has been experiencing lately?

I have also had some intermittent flakey behavior the past few days but have attributed it to using a Windows Vista machine a few times instead of the Apple equipment
Seriously, the problems I have seen have been more along the lines of not being able to just back up from the second page in a forum to the first page. Have to manually hit page 1 to get back. A few times, backing up has taken me to the login page...hit the back arrow again and revert to the master list. Just a little flakey lately and inconsistent.
Nothing disasterous, though, so I have just been living with it...may be due to very high usage, when the MBA was announced the system seemed to come to its knees...just way too many people logged in is my guess.

    Ken,
kenak99709 is the Alias of the Discussions account that you are currently posting with.
If you had to have created a new account, you would not have been able to choose that Alias, as Discussions will only allow one member to have a unique Alias.
Either I am not understanding your dilemma, or possibly you have not explained the situation in full.

  • Since 5.1.5 I cannot post images in Apple discussions

I often post to a few Apple discussion forums.
Often, to help others, a picture (more than likely to be a screenshot) is worth a thousand words.
Since installing Safari 5.1.5, the dialog to insert a picture - in a post such as this - does not work anymore.
Am I alone in this? Any solutions?
I would appreciate if people let me know if it is working or not. If it is a bug, and not just a glitch in my mac, I plan to let Apple know.
I figure it should have come up by now, so maybe it is just me... I have had to use Firefox just for this kind of thing.

    Hi Luis ...
I have the same thing happen and the cache is usually the culprit.
Try emptying the Safari cache more often. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache.
If that doesn't help, go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
For Lion v10.7x:  To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Apple Discussion Stylesheets not loading

    Greetings everyone,
I was away for some time and just came back to see a whole new Apple Discussions! Way to go team, this new one has a lot of promises.
However one thing, whenever I visit here, the stylesheets don't seem to load! Also I can't get the images to load as well, I mean the images at the top of the page with the Apple navigation are OK, but nothing else...guess, I'll print a pdf and upload it somewhere...
Anyway, when I view the activity screen, it shows a "forbidden" infront of the css link...
    I'm using Safari, Mac OS X 10.4.2...
    Thanks,

  • Future Notice from Apple Discussions Admin:

In the not too distant future I suspect we'll be getting the following announcement:
Due to conditions we'd rather not admit to, in order to better serve the users of the Apple Discussion Forum we have temporarily suspended all activity. We'll update this announcement as the situation changes.
Let's face it. This new board was rolled out without adequate testing. Searching is less accurate than it was. Posting a URL reference to another thread or to a specific post of a thread is problematic. It is more difficult to check back on the threads that one is involved with. Email notification still doesn't work properly. For those of us with vision difficulties the forum is still too hard to read. It is still slow...
Hey Steve! How about rolling some heads over here and getting this thing fixed, eh?

    Hi dwb!

  • How To Prevent My Apple Discussions Showing In Google Search Results

    Hello Everyone,
I am just wondering if anyone could help me prevent google from showing all of my Apple Discussions showing when someone searches in Google is there some kind of Privacy i can do in my account or something help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

    Hello Sean:
I am just wondering if anyone could help me prevent google from showing all of my Apple Discussions showing when someone searches in Google is there some kind of Privacy i can do in my account or something help would be much appreciated.
To my knowledge, no. Once something enters the Internet, Google (and other search engines) find those items. How they do that, I do not know. FWIW, things that I had no idea were even posted on-line popped up when I "googled" myself.
There is really no privacy when one enters data on a web site - particularly in a public forum like Apple discussions. My own rule is that if I do not want to see it on the front page of a newspaper, I do not enter it on the 'net and I do not use it in E-mail.
