Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable PROBLEM

I had my iPhone plugged into my Mac book at the coffee shop this weekend using the dock connector to USB cable. After a while, I kept getting a message on my phone that said "This accessory is not compatible with your device. Would you like to turn on Airplane mode?"
I thought this was odd since the connector was an Apple product; I've never seen this message before, and I've had my iPhone plugged into my laptop several times before.
I didn't think anything of it, so I kept selecting 'No' after getting this message repeatedly. I had no reason to question the integrity of my iPhone or its accessories since I don't misuse or mistreat anything ever.
After a while, I looked down and noticed white smoke coming out of where the cable connects to the phone! I immediately unplugged everything and noticed the burnt and melted section of the connector part and in the phone itself. I left my phone unplugged until I could get to the Apple store.
I have to say, I believe these cables are not made very well. Luckily, the Apple store replaced my phone and my cable for free without any hassle. I'm just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Is Apple doing anything about this?
-Still an iPhone fan.

Doing anything about what ? Other people's faulty computers which go over voltage and fry iPhones ?
The initial message you got is indicative of a short circuited or dirty dock connector so it was probably dirt on the connector or iPhone which caused the problem. No they aren't likely to. I've never heard of this before but I am glad they replaced your iPhone so swiftly !

  • Dock connector to usb cable

Just wondering about the dock connector to usb cable that came with my new iPhone 4S:

I have an iPod 5th Generation (Video), part number MA147LLA which has a very similar connector. I'm wondering if the two are interchangeable. The white part of the iPod dock connector looks a little bigger than the one for the iPhone 4S but the actual connector itself still fits. I'd like to keep one in the car for when I need to do a charge when I'm away.
Anyone else using this same cable with both, their iPod and iPhone?

  • Can I use my iPad's Dock Connector to USB Cable with my iPhone 4?

I am a newbie with the Iphone from Verizon and I previously own a Ipad.
Are the cords between the two interchangeable such that I can charge them both with the same cord, at different times of course.
My question comes down to when I travel do I have to take both cords?

Yes, they are definitely interchangeable. Haven't even taken the cord out of the iphone box yet but have been using the charger that stays in the wall from my iPad. Way more convenient and I just think of it as having a "spare" charger just in case.

i'm looking to run a female dock connector from my dock, to a male dock connector on the other end to my phone for use in my car, so i can get charge and line out to my phone and hide all the connectors except for the final male connector to my phone.

  • Old Apple dock and composite AV cables

My old iPod with Color display (circa 2005) recently died, so I'm getting a new iPod Touch 4G.
the old iPod could display pictures on the TV as well as play music. I had it in an old style genuine Apple dock and used a genuine Apple Composite AV cable to connect the dock and my home entertainment system so I could show the pictures on the TV and play music through my surround sound system. That old Apple AV cable did not connect through the dock connector but is connected to the dock through a headphone like 3.5mm plug. That old Dock also has an S-Video out
All the original stuff was bought years ago when I made good money... but I lost my job over a year and half ago and just got another after being out of work that long that pays significantly less than I used to make ...
As my old iPod died, after living on shoestring budget so long with NO frills, even though money is still tight, I decided to give myself a gift for the holidays and replace it with a Touch.
I knew i would have to replace my old Apple Firewire chargers (I have 2) and my old 3rd party firewire car charger (in the car I had a line out cable from dock connector as well which I connected to a cassette adaptor for my 9 year old car)..
But figured I could find USB chargers cheaply and could still use the old dock and AV cables (as those were - and still are- outrageously expensive)...
But I've started reading things which I think are saying is that I might not be use my old Apple Dock, and Apple Composite AV cables which is making me nervous.
So ... can I use the old Apple Dock and AV cables for video with the 4g Touch????
There should be no TECHNICAL reason for it not to work... but maybe Apple has gotten a bit more greedy...
If it does not work for video, will at least the audio part of the cable connected to that dock and the s-video out work? I can make that work with what I already have to get audio and video.
If not then I need a lot more new stuff I can't really afford... and will be very very disappointed and angry with Apple... There is no good reason those things should stop working other than purposely sabotaging them to make me have to buy new over priced accessories! I PAYED my apple tax on those already!
    Thanks for any info...
    A worried karen

Apparently there are at least 3 different Dock model numbers.
The Model number is the most important and can be found on the bottom of the dock.
The part numbers may change due to several things like boxing an AV cable with or without a wall charger. You would probably get the same cable but the part number on the box would be different due to possible other contents inside the box.
    1. *iPod Photo Dock* Part# M9868G/A, Model# ?????
with iPod AV Cable or S-Video cable Part# M8765G/A
    2. *iPod Universal Dock* Part# MA045G/A, *Model# A1153*
with iPod AV Cable or S-Video cable Part# M8765G/A
    3. *Apple Universal Dock* Part# MC746LL/A, Model# ?????
with Apple Composite AV Cable Part# MC748AM/A
or Apple Component AV Cable Part# MC917ZM/A
I had both items in #2 above. I still have the iPod Universal Dock and it came in its own box.
No remote, No cable(s), but did come with 5 dock adapters.
I never tried my iPod Touch through the Dock to the TV. I did try the iPod Touch using the older iPod AV Cable to the TV but that did not work and the link above tells us it doesn't. That's why I bought the newer Composite Cable which does work when directly connected to the TV and the iPod Touch.
I gave my older cable away to a friend so I can't test if it would work like the document says or not but like you said, in theory, it should work.
According to the document given above and below, the iPod Touch should work with your Dock you have now even though it doesn't list the 4th generation. (I don't think they have updated this yet)

If you buy a new iPod Touch 4th generation, then I guess the only way you will know for sure is to try it out and let us know here.

  • USB Cable problem with HP Photosmart 7960 printer

This may sound like a stupid question but I just bought a new 7960 printer to replace my old 7960 which has two out of the three ink cartridge holders broken and the usb port on the new printer won't accept a usb cable. It appears to be blocked by a cap insert over the connector prongs which will not come out. Any suggestions?

Here is a link with some troubleshooting steps that may help to solve the issue you are having with your printer:

  • 4-pin and 6-pin USB cable- problems

    Hi guys,
my original 6-pin Apple USB cable has often been used and thats what it looked like. So I bought a non-Apple USB cable. I noticed, that it has only 4-pins and it doesnt work with my 3G. The strange thing is, that it works great/as good as the Apple one on his 3G. I know that you`ll probably sugest buying a real Apple one, but they were to expensive for me.

  • CA-42 SOLVED USB CAble Problem !

Here is the answer to many CA-42 Cable problems people are having.
First, Nokia says you must use their cable. NOT! The problem with the Chinese cables I found is the pins are not even. With a file, file down the pins so they are all the same length. With 1 or 2 pins longer than the others, the remaining pins do not make contact. Do not file down the longer ones any farther than the short ones. It will work !
It works. I have been trying to get this resolved for 3 days. Filed the pins so

Try uninstalling PC Suite, and also the Nokia Connectivity Cable drivers from Control Panel (Add/Remove Programs).
Then download and install the latest version of PC Suite with the latest cable drivers from:

Yes... i have encountered the same usb data cable connnectivity problem with my current N73ME and my old N70. At first it detects pretty fine but after a couple of months its hard to get any symbols either in phone or in PC Suite. I think this is a very common problem for every POP-Port data connectivity. Whether in my new N95 and 5200 has mini usb which is pretty less error in this regards. Why nokia uses such rubbish connectivity solution for such a robust multimedia phone like N-series whereas all the other company uses miniusb which is much much less problem. Nokia plz think on that...
