Apple Doesn't Like Certain Musicians?

Hard to believe, but I simply can not figure out why certain artist's music simply will NOT play on my 2G Shuffle. All were ripped from real CDs, all play fine in iTunes, all play fine on at least 2 HDD based Pods, but none will play on my Shuffle. Not only that, but 2 of 3 are major talents and one is a somewhat obscure band that a friend I used to work with plays with... they are:
Eminem
Creed
Y'All
Not only that, but I just went to the store to see of maybe they carried Y'all, did a search, there was one "y'all" listed, but twice in a row, iTunes is beach balling on me. Yup, they carry 'em, but not the album Rob gave me... which is called "Big Apple Pie."
So 3 artists that they do carry, but I can't hear them on my Shuffle because I didn't buy them from Apple... grrrrrr.

(copied from some Apple page)
These audio file formats are supported by iPod shuffle. These include formats for audiobooks and podcasts:
AAC (M4A, M4B, M4P) (up to 320 kbps)
MP3 (up to 320 kbps)
MP3 Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
WAV
AAA (audible.com spoken word, formats 2, 3, and 4)
AIFF
I don't know about the formats on bigger iPods (I have Shuffles) but I've read that they support more formats than the Shuffle does.

  • Apple doesn't like podcasts?

The old (ios6) podcast app was terrible.  That's an objective fact; look at the ratings.  I used it once, deleted it.  Podcasts belong in the music app, like they always were.  Now, ios 7 not only doesn't include any app that allows podcast listening, it also didn't update the terrible podcasts app for ios 7.  They went crazy redesigning the **** compass, but the podcast app got left behind.  So my options are go back to ios 6, or download the terrible app and suffer with the limitations it presents, or pay for a third party podcast app and hope for the best.
    So, here's my question:
    Seriously?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Its not just bluetooth and new cars that are suffering. I use the flicktunes gesture control app and listen to podcsts while driving. Now I can't. So fed up with this. All I can think of doing is import the downloaded files into a regular playlist and change genre from genre to anything else and see if that works but its clumsy at best.
I don't understand this. Half what is in my music app is spoken word so why not let me include podcasts which, when it comes down to it they're all just audio files.
Please apple, let me play podcasts in the music app!

  • Local DNS uses .local suffix, but Apple doesn't like that?

    Hi all,
    I've had a 20gb classic for a while now, and upgraded to a 32gb Touch today but I think I've run into a g-glitch
First off, yes I am a nerd, and I have more complexity in my home network than a lot of businesses... That's what you get when you work in Network Security I guess!
My home network uses the domain fukawi2.local for everything, so I have a DNS server and DNS records for everything such as:
    desktop.fukawi2.local
    laptop.fukawi2.local
    touchpod.fukawi2.local
    proxy.fukawi2.local
etc... But anytime I try to use and of these names, the iPod Touch locks up for a long while, and then barfs. I've been doing some traffic tracing, and when I'm using *.fukawi2.local, I don't even see any DNS requests be made to my DNS server. I do see requests when opening GMail or the App Store etc.
IIRC, I remember reading somewhere a while ago that Apple treats .local domains differently using Bonjour or something similar? Is that correct? Is there anyway around this? (ie, disable it on the iPod) or do I have to use IP Addresses for everything?
    TIA

Thanks for the KB article luvlabs - I tried to find it but ".local" was treated as "local" by the search I was using so it returned a lot of irrelevant material
That might be one solution that I'll have to look at if I can't get the iPod to treat .local as a normal domain - create a *.fukawi2.ipod domain or something and just point them to the equivalent *.fukawi2.local name (ie, proxy.fukawi2.ipod -> proxy.fukawi2.local)
(and I'm fairly proficient with networking and Linux, but certainly far from an expert with Apple products! ;P )

  • 6gen nano doesn't like certain songs

There seems to be a problem with certain songs on my dad's 6gen nano.
It plays with no problem but on certain songs it will play for about a minute, makes a "bubbling" noise then skips to another song.
Can anyone help - what am I missing??
    Thanks

OK, this reply was nice. It helps with one question. Also, I have discovered that the Nano does not register songs/podcasts as "played" unless it is syncing songs or podcasts. I now have Podcasts set to sync the latest episode and this eliminates the blue "unplayed" ball when I reconnect the Nano.
Now, how do I fill the rest of the space with music? I tried "Manually Manage Music" and this way I can fill the rest of the space with some of my music. But I'm stuck with figuring out how to Randomize the fill. I put the songs in alhpabetical order by title and then stick in the first 200, then the second 200 after a few days and so on. Not very satisfying.
I tried to sync the music by checking the box but it won't select any music on it's own. Just tells me that there is no more space on the iPod and I believe it just starts at the top of my playlist and works it's way down, always the same songs. I know how dumb I am for not being able to figure this out but, again, an Autofill button would be the cat's meow for my situation. I used to Autofill my Shuffle and then delete as many songs as necessary to fit the podcasts I needed for any given day, the exact opposite of what I'm doing now and much more satisfying. Does anybody have a cool way of doing something similar?
    TIA, Rick

  • Apple doesn't like my email initials.

In the latest update, when I put in my initials for my name, the spellcheck constantly wants to change them. It never used to do this. Once I put the@, it changes the F to a G every time. Anyway to fix this w/o hiting the "x" each time?

You have to have a New Message open for either of the menu items to work.

  • Many users--Major issues--Apple doesn't seem to know or care

I fear that this post is borderline inappropriate to this forum, but I'm going to throw it out there because I'm feeling quite like the neglected stepchild of Apple as of late.
Many, many users are having trouble with their iPods/iTunes since upgrading to iTunes 7 and iPod version 1.2. Such things as skipping audio, video not working. I am one of a large group who can't play audio podcasts when running the new software.
The details are in the forums. Here is but one example of the problems:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=641061
I've tried reloading the episodes, resubscribing to the entire podcast. I've restored the iPod to factory defaults and have even reinstalled iTunes 7 twice. Others have tried other crazy solutions like transcoding the files and setting start and stop points in file properties. None of this worked for me.
I was forced to revert back to 6.0.5 with iPod 1.1.2, but now iTunes is complaining that it can't copy some content because I'm running the old updater version.
As I said, many people are having this same problem and some are finding various creative workarounds for it, but the software is broken and needs to be fixed. None of these workarounds has worked for me and I was forced into old software (6.0.5), but now iTunes is saying it won't even allow that.
Does anyone know when a fix for this will be available?
Now the reason I think I'm OK in posting this message is because I'd like to provide a little feedback regarding how the forums operate. I would like to recommend (if you're not doing this already) that Apple staff monitor the forums for issues such as this so that they can be dealt with in a timely fashion. There are many savvy users out there who have a wealth of troubleshooting data out there that could prove quite useful to Apple in resolving this, but it seems (from our perspective) that Apple doesn't even know there's a problem.
Again, apologies if I've misused this forum, but no one in your community knows what to do about the problem and they're not getting any guidance from Apple.
    Thank you,

Apple does monitor the forums and it is safe to say that they are aware of the issue you and others are having with iTunes 7, iPod v1.2 and podcasts.
    See: http://discussions.apple.com/help.jspa#adpersonnel
I would also suggest that there are Apple employees who are having the same problems with their iPods, so it's probably also safe to say that the vacuum will eventually be filled.

  • After partition crash repair, my apple doesn,t recognize my ID, only have read permits when open files

after partition crash repair by iShop, my apple doesn't recognize my ID, only have read permits when open files, looks like I am working on somebody else's computer

My girlfriend had this same issue.  It ended up being her cable.
It was very weird and confussing as the first cable would allow the phone to show up on my laptop but not my girlfriends.  So we thought the cable was fine.
Further the first cable would allow the iPhone to sync with itunes on her laptop but not show up in her "My Computer."
By chance we tried a different cable and it worked fine on her laptop and instantly showed up in her "My Computer."
All very weird but try a couple different cables and see if that fixes the problem first before resorting to other time consuming steps.

  • Last night I did an update and now when I turn on my macbook it just goes to the white screen with the apple and stays like that.

Last night I did an update and now when I turn on my macbook it just goes to the white screen with the apple and stays like that. How do I fix this issue?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Created new Apple ID, redeemed $20 gift card, now Apple doesn't recognise my Apple ID and the $20 Gift Card says it has been redeemed when it has just disappeared into my Apple ID that can't be found. I'm going around in circles trying to find my $20 gift

I was given a $20 iTunes Gift Card for my birthday, I setup a new Apple ID, redeemed my card and now Apple doesn't recognise my Apple ID and the $20 credit has disappeared. I've logged on using my Dad's Apple ID, but where has the $20 Gift Card gone? I try to redeem it again and get message that it has already been redeemed. Not impressed with Apple at all. I've sent 2 emails to their support, no response. I tried calling today and the call centre is closed.
Can anyone help me sort out this crazy problem? Why does Apple make it so hard to sort out?

Hi thanks, When I enter the Apple ID I get a message that either my Apple ID or password are incorrect. I then go to Forgotten Password, enter my Apple ID, choose to get an email to reset the password, but no email arrives.
So if I can't find/reuse the Redeemed Gift Card due to the Apple ID problem, surely that doesn't mean I lose $20??
I first emailed one week ago. Have emailed for the third time today.

How do I change the Apple id against a certain telephone number?  I have two iPhones and wish to use a different Apple id for each and confused as to how I do this?

Create a new Apple ID for the second phone. If you are setting the phones up as new phone enter the ID you want to use on each phone.
If both phones are already signed in to one Apple ID then use the settings app to change Apple IDs on one phone.
Settings > iTunes and App Store > tap on the Apple ID > sign out > sign in with alternate Apple ID.
Note that if you have downloaded apps with the original Apple ID on the phone with the new Apple ID, those apps will still be associated with the old Apple ID and will require the old ID and password in order to update them.

How do i put a mobile number in on numbers '09? like 0414441472. Doesn't like 0 at the front. Thanks

    Ed,
There are a number of ways to do this. Your phone number consists of all numerals, yet isn't a numeric value, but rather a text value. Numbers doesn't know that, so it treats it as a numeric value and strips off what it feels is an unnecessary leading zero.
    You have there options:
Format the cells as Text prior to making the entry.
Leave the cells as a Numeric value format, but choose Custom Format to set the number of displayed places and choose to display leading zeros.
Use the Numeral System Format and set it to base 10, displaying 9 digits, or whatever you need.
There are ways to convert a number to text and add required leading zeros with a formula too, but it's needless work.
