Apple Dropping Firewire?

Is Apple really thinking about dropping Firewire supprt? I've seen many, many internet articles on it. On Macrumors they mentioned that the new intel iBooks line will drop it completely.
Here is the MacRumors site about it:
http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/12/20051208222720.shtml
And here is the official article stating it:
http://www.powerpage.org/archives/2005/12/theapple_core_firewire_not_dead_but_its_on_lifesupport.html
What makes it even more convincing is that the MacBook Pro has no Firewire 800(not as bad because it wasn't a prominent technology anyway), but the fact that it only has one Firewire 400!
How will Apple drop Firewire when its the only port (lack of a better word) that can boot Mac OS X. Booting from external HD, using Target Disk Mode, and connecting computers with Firewire to transfer files are a few things that make Macs so easy to use and also easy to fix.
Maybe they'll have to make USB compatible with all these aspects. Without it, I can't see how they can totally drop Firewire support.

Forgive me, but I think you need to get the facts before complaining that someone else doesn't have the facts. I never said that the intel Macs don't have firewire 400. I said:
"but the fact that it only has one Firewire 400!"
Maybe you should read more carefully before accusing someone of a crime you've committed.
I'm am not saying that firewire is dead and am not making sensationalist claims. I just find it odd that Apple has dropped its firewire 800 port and one of its 400 ports on its high end MacBook Pro and hasn't mentioned anything about it. If you believe this is "myth" just check the tech specs of the Powerbook and the MacBook Pro.
Everything I have said here is entirely fact..not myth. I suggest that you read my post more carefully before accussing me. Better luck in the future.

  • Apple drop down menu at top left will not display when I click on apple

My computer has just started having several odd problems and I'm not sure why... One obvious thing is that the apple drop down menu doesn't work, so to restart, I have to actually press restart button. (also can't tell exactly what OS I am running but think it's tiger.)
Can anyone suggest what to do about this?
Information about what the larger issues might be would also be helpful.
    Here's what has been happening:
First, InDesign CS2 crashes upon opening, even after several restarts.
Then, my trash would not empty or secure empty (until I held option down).
I can't think of what would cause this, I downloaded several large files from an ftp site but those have since been deleted.
    Any help very much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Sarah

There are any number of possible causes. Corrupted files, incompatible third-party utility, bad preference file(s), just to name a few. I would suggest starting with some basic maintenance.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
If the problems persist let me know. You may need to reinstall OS X if the above is unsuccessful. Although this may be done without erasing the hard drive it would be a good idea to backup your files just in case.

  • HT1711 I have over 100 songs I bought back before mid-2009 when Apple dropped this DRM thing. If I want to play those songs on Sonos, the ONLY way to do so is pay Apple another $25/year for iTunes Match and re-download them??

I have a Sonos system in my house and suddenly discovered that many songs I bought off of iTunes years ago are 'grayed out' when I try to play them from my iPhone or do not appear as options at all when I try to play them on Sonos from my overall music library.  It's well over 100 songs I bought back before mid-2009 when Apple dropped this DRM thing. From what I think I am reading, if I want to play those songs on Sonos, the ONLY way to do so is pay Apple another $25/year for iTunes Match (which I don't have any interest in) and then re-download them all in iTunes Plus format??

    Matt,
I agree it was not all communicated real well, but in your case it will work out.  You missed the program where you could have upgraded 100 tracks for 30 cents each (=$30) but now you can do it via Match (=$25).  It works pretty simply, per this document:
Can I upgrade my previously purchased music to iTunes Plus?
Yes. If you subscribe to iTunes Match, you can download your previously purchased music again in the iTunes Plus format. To do so:
You need to delete the original DRM song from your library first. Doing this enables you to download the song again in the iTunes Plus format from iTunes in the Cloud.
Click the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store.
    Click Music.
Locate the artist of the song you want to upgrade.
Click the iCloud Download icon next to the song you want to upgrade.
Just don't forget to put the Plus files on your hard drive -- properly backed up of course -- and to cancel the Match subscription before the second year rolls around!

  • Apple Branded Firewire vs. Generic Firewire

If I'm using a generic firewire cable to import video, should I expect the video quality to be noticeably lower than if I imported video using an Apple branded firewire cable? I think Apple is charging around $25-30 for a firewire cable and I picked up a generic one for about $7.
However, I noticed that the video that I watch in iMovie is not nearly as good as when I connect my 3CCD camcorder directly to the TV and watch there. Is it just that iMovie doesn't display my imported video at the best quality OR that I'm paying for using a generic firewire cable???
    Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hello Terrabay,
Although you have a definitive answer from mishmumken on the need to have a studio monitor for final review of any digital production as well as Matthew Morgan's correct response that the signal (packet)portion of the FW data is either going to work 100% or not at all, I'd like to add my two cents on generic vs quality FW cable.
Brief explaination: FW is sent in "packets" with a timing signal. If you have an inferior cable (read that cheap w/out decent shielding), you may lose that timeing signal, and the FW circuit on the other end of the cable can't properly sort out the packet information w/out the timing signal. The result will be no connection at all. That's why FW cable specific on cable length: the "packets" need to be timed from one end of the cable to the other, and w/out going into detail, the lenght is determined by the frequency of the "packets".
IMHO, inferior FW cable will cause the majority of problems in loss of connection. Sometimes just a bend or coil of the cable is enough to warp open the shield-wrap and interrupt the signal timing. On some quality FW cable, there may be up to four(quad) wrap to insure that that doesn't happen.
So, my suggestion is that you choose quality cable. And price does not always mean that you will get what you pay for.
    Respectfully,
    Bill Gallagher

How can I get my iMac (Intel /  Lion 10.7.4) to go to "sleep" using the Apple drop down menu.  I have never had a problem until recently.

You can\t download apps through Safari. Google currently have an iPhone-optimised app in the store (so it will show under iPhone apps) and other people have said that they are working on an iPad version, or you could try Jasmine app, or try accessing the mobile version of YouTuve via Safari : http://m.youtube.com (you can create a home screen shortcut for the site)

No I have my own iPhone iPad and MacBook  so everything is set up on devices that are mine and as far as I know I never connected to anyone else's device and logged with my apple ID.  But are you saying it is possible for someone to have obtained my apple ID and send an iMessage from their device with my contact information so it looks like it came directly from me?  It's crazy I looked down at my iPhone and saw this message had just been sent that I did not type or send

  • Apple drop down menu not appearing.....

Recently had to do a complete restore from my back up to my mac mini.
Seems to have sorted out most of the problems I was having (but not all).
However the Apple Symbol drop down Menu in the Menu bar turns blue when clicked on, but no sub menu appears.
    Very inconvenient.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts on a solution to this.
And while I'm on the subject of weird things that the restore has produced......
I use iWeb to create a number of websites but now, after the restore, the icon in the dock is grey and when I try to open it I get a message that says
You can't open the application iWeb because it may be damaged or incomplete.
Any suggestions or possible solutions gratefully received.
    Thanks

  • Why did apple drop NBC?

NBC has so many great shows. Now you can only get NBC shows from Amazon.com, who doesn't support the mac or the ipod. Itunes would be so much better with every TV show. *I want NBC content back!!!*

To add on To Deb, NBC was also reportedly interested in getting a percentage in iPod sales - another thing that Apple would not be happy with.
Anyway, NBC opened HULU after dropping Apple. Not compatible with the iPod and requires internet connection which made me say no.

  • When and Why Did Apple Drop The 160GB Classic Ipod

    Hi
I was going to go and finally buy a 160GB Ipod tomrrow.I see they don't even list it anymore on Apples site and Future-shop doesn't even list it on the site.
They only make a 120GB Now
When Did they Drop this and why???
Also Do any stores still have them in Stock???
I won't be spending the money on only a 120GB if thats all they make now
I've had my Ipod Mini 4GB since 2005 and thought it was time for a upgrade.
Please do tell me if Apple still makes the 160GB Ipod
    thanks

Apple has discontinued the 160GB. You can buy one online still, but not from Apple. Or buy a used one off Craig's List.
P.S. Actually Apple is still selling refurbished 160GB on it's site, if you want to go that route. I also found some new ones on Amazon. Buy.com may have some too.

  • Fix classic apple drop down menu

In classic, I use the "apple menu" folder that appears in the drop down menu for Classic that is in the OS X menu (that 9 that appears if you click "show classic status in menu) in the systems preferences (OSX). This item has disappeared a couple of times when I do some OSX updates or apple security downloads. Might have gone on a verify permissions. Not sure what makes it disappear, but the fix is easy. Turns out that the memory for the classic apple menu items was reset to default of 128, and that created problem. Fix involves remembering how classic worked. Need to open the control panels FOLDER; then click on menu options and hit get information (command I). When it is open, increase the 128 to 258 or whatever, and the "apple menu" folder reappears in classic drop down menu next time you restart.

When OS 9 was used as a primary operating system, the Apple Menu Options control panel was always prone to having its preferences spontaneously and mysteriously corrupted, and at boot time Conflict Catcher often alerted me that AMO was using more memory at startup than it had requested — which might have been the cause of the corruption. I eventually found that the remedy was to allocate a lot more Preferred memory to AMO than the default setting of 128K — especially if one had lots of items and aliases of large folders in the Apple menu. I eventually set mine at 4000K, and my problems with the AMO prefs file and the CC notices at startup went away for good. It's something of a surprise to me that the same misbehavior continues even when OS 9 is only run as Classic within OS X, but your post suggests that it does, John. Good catch!

  • IMac Dropping Firewire Disks & USB Flash Drive

I have a 3TB 800mb WD Firewire Disk daisy chained to a 1TB 800mb WD Firewire Disk on my iMac  along with a 3.95GB USB Flash Drive.
All my stuff is kept on these disks so the iMac runs light.
After awakening from sleep, I often find that one of the Firewire Disks or the USB Flash Drive has gone AWOL and it's a real pain to get the Firewire Disk working again. The USB Flash Drive requiring to be plugged in again.
Removing the Firewire Disks power lead sometimes fixes it, sometimes an iMac restart does the trick.
The problem with restarting the IMac is the length of time it takes in restarting. The USB drive's default appears to be to go AWOL every time the iMac restarts.
Does anyone know of a fix to cure this issue of Disks going AWOL and the abnormal time it takes to restart the iMac?
    Regards to all,

    Hi Mike,
Tried all that, doesn't solve the issue.
Incidentally, I have Arcana Startuo Sound installed, this mutes the AWFULL Apple Diagnostic Startup Sound that some Apple Idiot devised.
Surely an on-screen message after startup, warning that something is amiss would be the sensible alternative?
Apple have more than their fair share of the number of idiots they employ, witness the Wireless Keyboard, a Keyboard without Page up/down keys and Calculator keys? I admit the Wireless Keyboard does comes in useful for iPad!
The problem with resetting the Pram is that it trashes Arcana, then I have to Restore OS X or reformat and install Snow Leopard>Mountain Lion etc.
Arcana isn't available for Mountain Lion, my Arcana copy only works with Mountain Lion through a legacy process.

  • Apple support & Firewires

Is it true Apple don't support customers who don't have a buyer protection plan or who've run out of it ('z what they told me)? That succks, because you can run into issues later on which are impossibly discovered in the first couple years. Uh, such as Firewire problem once your ibook runs amok. Btw, if a Firewire transfer keeps failing, how can you know wether problem lies with the target computer or the host computer? You can't, right? And Apple won't help you unless you've paid them. (Some say Apple has great support but I'm not sure yet).
Another question would be nice to have answered too which is why Apples Firewire technology is so unstable. Like "Rhonda" (?) adviced previously that you must press to the left of the track pad to make the transfering from one device to another work, or to prevent it from hanging itself. How, can a praised technology like Firewire, under a praised brand/company like Apple, be so incredibly wacky? Foremost, Why?
    Do you know?

Is it true Apple don't support customers who don't have a buyer protection plan or who've run out of it
No, this is not true. Apple will continue to support their products. If the product is out of warranty, then there will be a fee for support. You can't possibly expect any company to provide free support for all products forever.
Apple Discussions is a great example of free technical support for every product Apple has ever released. If you have trouble with a product, and you don't wish to pay for Apple support... then post your problem here. CHances are, someone will be able to help you for free.
why Apples Firewire technology is so unstable
Unstable? Since when? Firewire is one of the most stable and efficient connectivity methods available today.
