Apple dvd player / external dvd drive issue

i recently bought a LaCie d2 external dvd drive, since my desktop g4 only has an internal cdr drive. I am running osx 10.4.3, which i installed through this dvd drive. yet now, when i put a DVD movie into the drive and try to open Apple DVD Player, it says
"There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"
i know this is a third party drive, but can anyone help me out? pleeeease?

This is to be expected. DVD Player will only work
with an external DVD drive if the Mac has an internal
DVD drive.
However you may overcome this limitation using PlayerPatc
h.
I had the same problem as above (error code [-70012])... I downloaded this patch for my LG external DVD/RW Model GSA-2166D and it worked perfectly... can now play DVDs...
It's people like you who make being part of the mac community a joy!
Now I just need to find a patch to get the Light Scribe to work...
Thanks!

  • Using Apple TV with external DVD drive on Macbook Pro

I am unable to play DVDs from my external hard drive attached to my Macbook Pro via the Apple TV on my Samsung smart TV. What am I doing wrong. Thanks.

Thanks for your answer Brian. I am running Yosemite on a 15 inch Macbook Pro. I use a 'super drive'/external DVD player for DVDs. I am trying to play these DVD's that I have purchased on a large screen Samsung Smart TV using my Apple TV. I get sound but no video. I suspect that they cannot be played using Apple TV. Is that correct?

  • DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files from my hard drive

When logged into my home account DVD Player plays DVDs but will not play VIDEO_TS files that are on my hard drive. I get an error message: "there was a problem opening the media. Media type is not supported." When logged in as "root" DVD player does play these same files. Also, when logged in to my home account, I can play these same files in VLC.

Go this this thread for more details:

But the gist of the fix is to delete or rename "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" and let the DVD Player build a new one. It seems that this is caused by a migrated PPC preference that borks DVD Player 5 on Intel Macs, which is what just happened to me. Hope this helps.

  • Cannot boot my mini from CD/DVD or external firewire drive

The problem I face is simple: I cannot boot my mini from CD/DVD or external firewire drive.
When I boot with option key down, I see the Mac OSX boot and a ghost Windows from an early BootCamp installation, removed long ago (I now use Parallels).
I tried disconnecting everything but keyboard and mouse, to no avail.
I tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM.
I tried disconnecting the mini from everything and waiting one night.
I tried erasing the disk from another Mac when booting the mini as FireWire drive.
And still, the mini refuses to boot from the original CD, or any external drive.
Anyone has an idea whether it is software or hardware ?
Could it be a consequence of the early Boot Camp install and then removal ? Is there a way to reverse this ?
Any help or hint will be appreciated.
    Best regards

    Hi DaddyPaycheck,
Thanks for your message. Indeed, I failed to mention the problem from the Startup Disk Preference point of view.
Bootable CD and/or external disks also never appear in Startup Disk Prefs.
It indeed sounds like time for a backup (I did that) and a HD erase and reinstall of OSX. But since the CD does not want to boot, I tried installing from another Mac with my mini booted as FireWire drive. And that failed, probably because the master mini I used was a G4 one...
    Best regards

  • 10.4.8: DVD Player & external drives

I just posted this to another thread, and then realized that thread was marked "Answered." So I'm starting this new one.
My problem began after I upgraded to 10.4.8 (via Software Update) this past weekend. For some reason, DVD Player will not work with DVDs on my LaCie external DVD drive.
When I insert a DVD, DVD Player opens (as per my CDs & DVDs system preferences), and then I get:
"There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found (-70012)"
And when I click "OK," DVD Player closes. The volume does mount, however, and the drive shows up in System Profiler fine. The problem is with DVD Player. If I try to open DVD Player with the disk already in, I get the same error (and again it closes after "OK"). So I can't open a VIDEO_TS folder anywhere else either. DVD Player just won't open completely.
It sorta seems like the OS has reverted back to its behavior in 10.3, when DVD Player wouldn't even install unless you had an internal Apple DVD drive
(see, from 2004: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42727 ). At the time, the only way to watch DVDs on an external drive was with an app like VLC (which still works). But VLC runs jerky on my older Mac, and the DVD Player interface is much better.
That changed when 10.4 began supporting external drives for DVD Player, and it worked fine for me just a few days ago in 10.4.7. But now with 10.4.8 it seems like it won't play nice with external drives anymore. I repaired disk permissions after installing the upgrade. And I checked with LaCie & I have the latest firmware in the drive). Anyone know what's going on?
    I have a G4 533DP, running 10.4.8, and the LaCie is a 16x DVD+-R (Porsche Design), containing a _NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A device.
    Thanks for any help available.

Well, not "solved," but I was mis-remembering part of the problem: 10.4 did not correct the inability of DVD Player to recognize external drives -- I forgot that there was a software patch (a terminal script, I think) which allowed them to be recognized. Sorry for the trouble.

  • DVD Player crashes after drive change

    Hi everyone,
For the last 6 months or so, I've had my ThinkPad T23's Combo drive installed in my Pismo. It's a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-RW that came with the ThinkPad originally, but has recently failed. I took the drive out and reinstalled the Pismo's original DVD-ROM drive, but the result has been that DVD Player now fails to load up when I put in a DVD Movie. Specifically, the player tries to load up, but stops, crashes and closes. I had to use PatchBurn to install the 720, but all related files have now been removed. Incidentally, I had the same trouble with the Combo when I first installed it, remedied by using PatchBurn 4. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Rob Johnson

    Rob,
I have no specific fix but here are a few suggestions:
    - If you have an external monitor connected, remove it and test DVD Player.
    - Are you sure the DVD-side of the OEM DVD-ROM drive is sound? These drives are known to fail in various ways. Check its health by booting your Tiger DVD.
    - Make sure you have performed routine maintenance by flushing all the caches; the caches have occasionally caused problems on the Pismo with proper operation of the optical drive.
    - If no success at this point, it is recommended you download to your desktop the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC). Installing the Combo on top of your existing 10.4.8 will often solve various software issues; this Combo also includes the DVD Player.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
I install system updates in a very conservative manner: Run Repair Disk Permissions if you have not done so recently plus Verify Disk; if 'Verify' in First Aid fails, boot to your Tiger DVD and make repairs. A Safe Boot will also make most directory repairs but not all.
Once the HD is healthy, I restart with a Safe Boot/Safe Mode and run the Combo installer. Restart normally and test DVD Player.

  • DVD Player w/o Drive

I copied some DVD to my laptop and want to play the video_ts folders using DVD Player, but the app returns an "iniitialization error" when opening because I do not have the DVD drive inserted into the laptop (a Pismo with a removable player). I can use VLC Player, but I want to use DVD Player. If I start up with the drive inserted, then remove it, it works fine provided I do not quit. Any suggestions? Thanks, all.

Due to licensing issues, the DVD Player must require an Apple internal DVD drive. Once that requirement is met, you can play off of any mounted dvd drive or off of your hard drive.

  • How Do I Use my MacBook Pro to Watch a DVD From External DVD Player

    Hello Everyone!
While waiting for Apple TV to become available in my place of work, I want to use my MacBook Pro monitor for watching a DVD movie played on an external DVD player. The DVD player I have is an LPC-D1000, which is a new model. While Mac has its own DVD player, I'm trying to make use of my LG DVD player. If that's possible, please guide me on how to do it.
    Thank you.

You could use Elgato Systems' EyeTV product to view external video sources on your MBP.
There is additional cost involved, but it would achive what you want. You can buy the Hybrid product, and connect your external DVD player via Composite (red, white and yellow connectors) to your MBP via the EyeTV.

For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide Learn How to Post and More
I grasp that you have purchased the HP Stream 11 which does not come with an internal  CD/DVD and when you connected an external one, you received a message that it was missing a file.
Have you done all your Windows updates?
Have you done a manual check for Windows updates?
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant to check for HP updates?
What file does it say you are missing?
When it is connected, if you check Device Manager does it supply any additional information?
Have you ran the Windows troubleshooter?

  • Playing Region 2 DVDs Through External DVD Drive?

I have a brand-new MacBook Pro and I would love to be able to play Region 2 DVDs. Does anyone know if this is possible with an external DVD drive (i.e. setting an external DVD drive to play Region 2 while keeping the internal set to Region 1)?

I do have similar problem, and I undestand that in PCs there is an optional Zone 0 option that let you watch different zone movies, but sims that Apple do not disclose this to users, even this is obsolete, fore some one like a traveler that is unfair since I want to watch DVD when I rent it in other locations.
We should search for how to config the Internal DVD drive to Zone 0!.

  • Ripping DVDs using external optical drive with MacBook

Quick and possibly ridiculously silly question here. I have a collection of about 475 Region-2 DVDs (i.e., playable in the UK, not in the US) I purchased many years ago that are just taking up space. What I would like to do is rip them and store the files on an external drive.
The problem is that the optical drive on my MacBook is broken (no, I’m not happy about it -- see the dozens of pages of complaints in these Forum on the issue) and I don’t want to spend $1000 right now buying a new one.
This means I need to purchase an external optical drive. Unfortunately, I’m pretty confused about whether these things (by LaCie or Samsung, for instance) can actually rip anything, let alone Region 2 DVDs. I know they can write DVDs, but ripping—that I’m not sure about. Logically, they should be able to but I'm wondering whether their ripping capability has been disabled.
So, does anyone happen to know whether an external Superdrive can rip Region-2 DVDs? And if so, can you recommend any good ones for the Mac?
*Incidentally, I should add that these files are for my personal use, won’t be shared/uploaded, and will serve only as backups to my purchased DVDs. Basically, all I really want to do is clear out my cramped apartment and stick all the DVD boxes in a storage unit once and for all.*
    Thanks for your help

You must have one of those old-fashioned DVD players that looks for region codes.
Most better DVD players are now region free and will play NTSC or PAL DVDs.

  • Remove dvd from external cd drive.

I have an external cd drive for my new iMac and I can't get a dvd out of it. It is not recognizing that there is a dvd (maybe because it is a blu-ray dvd and it doesn't play them) in it and so will not eject it.

If you have an Apple USB superdrive, there is a page with instructions...
•Apple computer: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801?viewlocale=en_US
"order to eject you can Control-click or right-click the disc icon and choose Eject
from the menu that appears. You can also drag the disc icon to the trash."
Hopefully this helps, if you have a USB Apple external superdrive.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need help backing up songs from iTunes on DVD and external hard drive

    Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me with this. I want to make a back up of all the songs I have in iTunes. I want to save them to a DVD as well as my external hard drive. Can you please give me detailed info on how to do both of these things?
    Thank you in advance!

In Itunes set burning preferences to DATA CD/DVD
Create a playlist called "Backup", put all your track into it, make sure that all checkboxes are selected.
    Burn that playlist
Assuming that you are using standard folders for storing your music:
Through finder navigate to ./Users/YourUserName/Music - now drag the folder "iTunes" onto your ext. drive.
