Apple DVD player not working on Mid 2011 iMac running 10.7.2

I have a 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 iMac which came with Lion preinstalled.  When I insert a DVD, Apple's DVD player comes up with the following error:
"A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"
The DVD player works.  I can play DVDs using VLC, and I can use it to burn in iDVD, but Apple's own DVD player simply will not recognize it.  I hoped this problem might be solved when I upgraded to 10.7.2, but alas it has not.
Does anyone know how to fix or work around this issue?  This computer is used daily for my media-heavy job, so leaving it somewhere for service is not really feasible unless I'm completely unable to work on it.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account, or is system-wide. Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select “Help” from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Any application you run will behave as if you were running it for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the player and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

Ok, sounds like the safe mode boot worked... You probably don't want to always be in safe mode though (some reduced functionality) so does it do a normal boot now? If not, you should then reboot into safe mode and run Disk Utility. Then select Macintosh HD on the left hand side, and click the Verify Disk button. If needed, it will ask you to Repair Disk. If there are errors found, Repair Disk again until there are none. Then try another normal boot and reply with result, wether good or bad.

  • Hi, FaceTime on my mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2.

Hi, FaceTime on my mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2. I have contacts some of which only show option for audio FaceTime, on my iPhone an iPad the same contacts are available for video. Anyone know why, I can video some contacts from my iMac - but not others. The contacts are all synced via iCloud and the audio FaceTime from the iMac works fine to them but the video option is greyed out. If I go to my iPhone or iPad - there they are all ready to receive video. Curious. Anyone have any ideas i have exhausted the web searching.

  • Will my 21.5-inch, mid 2011 imac run call of duty 5?

will my 21.5-inch, mid 2011 imac run call of duty 5?

All you need to do is compare the tech specs from the game to the tech specs of the computer. If you don't know your computer's specs click the word Support in the upper right of this page, click Tech Specs and type in the computer's serial number. Once you have them then look at what the games specs are, if the computer meets or exceeds the specifications you're in business. However if you can't do that, sure post both (computer and games tech specs) and I'll look them over.

  • DVD Player Not Working - Need Help Please!

My eMac is currently not reading DVDs. The drive will recognize and automatically play commercial music CDs and software, as well as burned music CDs. However, when a commercial DVD is inserted into a drive, not only will the DVD player not recognize or play it, the eMac does not even notice that there is a DVD in the disk drive.
Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    hi there--
there are a number of things for you to try. one is to do a pmu reset. instructions are found in step 6 of this article. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=34885 if you have an ati graphics emac or later, then the pmu button is on the right side, not the left. if that doesn't work, then try resetting the firmware. boot to open firmware by holding apple-option-o-f and then type in the following commands--
    reset-nvram (hit return)
    set-defaults (hit return)
    reset-all (hit return)
the last command will restart the computer. if neither of those things works, then i would try booting to the install disk and running disk utility. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 if that fails, then i would create a test user (system preferences > accounts, then hit the plus sign) and see if there is any difference there. let me know how that is going for you. • Apple DVD Player not recognizing external speakers

I have connected a pair of Logitech V20 notebook speakers to my MacBook Pro. I adjusted the System Preference settings/Sound/Sound Effects - play sound effects through "Logitech USB Speaker" and that works fine. I can hear my laptop's beeps through the external speakers.
But when I put in a movie DVD and the Apple DVD Player boots up, the sound does not come through the external speakers. So, in the DVD Player, I selected Preferences/Disc Setup/Audio/Audio Output and the external speakers are not there - only "System Sound Output" with nothing else available/recognized.
So, how do I get the DVD Player to put the sound out through my external speakers and not the laptop internal speakers?

"System Sound Output" at DVDPlayer's preferences is just fine - it refers to the output that has been selected at System Preferences - Sound
No sound from USB speakers when booting is o.k., too: At this point those drivers that are needed haven't loaded yet.

  • DVD Player not Working on OSX

    Hi,
I just received an iBook G3 with OSX on it from my old boss. Everything works great except the DVD player. It is on the toolbar at the bottom but is 'greyed out' so I can't click on it. If I do, the icon gets a question mark over it.
When I looked in my hard drive, I saw that the DVD player is in OS 9.2- and the "Apple DVD Player" is greyed out there too. There is no DVD player in OSX in the hard drive.
The drive itself works- it plays cds, and recognizes the DVD (it appears on the desktop with it's correct title, etc.)I have tried several DVD's and it's the same with all of them.
I am a PC person as is everyone I know who knows computers so I'm completely at a loss. Thanks for your help!

I've checked out Pacifist, and it opens the packages just fine, they're all there, except of course, for DVD Player...I've looked at all three of my installation discs, and it's just not there. So now what can I do? I finally got a Dual Layer DVD drive, and I can't watch DVD's, InterActive's player worked for a day...now it won't run, even after reinstalling it.
If I can't install DVD player from the discs, and third party software isn't working, what should I do?

Nothing doing, although if I go and try same remote with an older macbook, it works fine.Battery all fine too, have been checking via digital camera. Something on my iMac is preventing this remote form being seen (and yes I have disabled ir receiving on the laptom after testing it)
    any ideas?

  • Cd/dvd player not working

my cd/dvd does not work  it does not appear on the the computer list of drives
does it need reinstalling ? if so how  do i do it
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
    Vista
Check if the drive is now working.
If it still doesn't work, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.
    Regards,

  • How do I update firmware for mid 2011 iMac running Yosemite?

I tried the link in the Apple support pages, but it told me I need Lion to install it. I bought the computer used. It came with Mavericks and I updated to Yosemite. I don't have Lion or any way (or desire to) install it.

There is no update for the mid-2011 iMac firmware that will fix the fans running at high speed.
Only the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) Apple hard drives had the proprietary firmware designed to properly monitor the hard drive temperature.
So you have several possible solutions:
    1. If the computer was sold to you with a warranty, rather than "AS IS", my first choice would be to force the seller to restore the computer to the condition it was represented to be in when you purchased it, with an OEM Apple 500GB drive that does not cause the fan problem. If they cannot or will not correct the problem, make them take it back and refund your money. Consumer advocates such as the Better Business Bureau can help you prepare a formal complaint against the seller, and perhaps lead to a successful resolution through arbitration, without hiring an attorney and filing a lawsuit.
    2. If you bought the computer "AS IS", you'll have to attempt to repair the problem yourself:
    A) Locate an exact replacement for the original OEM Apple hard drive with the proper firmware and install it on your own;
    B) Purchase a 'compatibility kit'. OtherWorldComputing www.macsales.com reverse-engineered a solution to the problem and sells a short cable with an external temperature sensor for the hard drive that can be used successfully with non-OEM drives. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIDIMACHDD11/
They also sell the sensor cable with a toolkit that can be used to disassemble and install the cable. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMACHDD11/
    C) Try the fan control program mentioned in earlier replies.

  • DVD player not working in Pavilion DV6-6102sa

The DVD player in my laptop won't play video DVDs.
It works okay with data discs, but films etc cause a problem - the drive spins up, and it sounds as though it's trying to read the disc, but not succesfully.
Depending on the player depends on what happens:
Windows Media Player may begin showing a garbled and unwatchable version of the disc, whereas VLC won't play anything. After a delay of at least 15 minutes (highly variable), the disc begins playing normally in both.
According to device manager, the drive is a HP DVDRAM GT31L. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I've tried many different DVDs, all with the same result, and I've tried both Windows Media Player and VLC with equally useless results.

To repair permissions go to Applications -> Utilities -> Disk utility -> select the hard disk in Disk Utility, and click on repair permissions in the First Aid section.
Did you mean to mark my thing as helpful, or solved? I see you marked it solved suggesting the problem has gone away.
A third party peripheral is any device which you hooked up to the computer that is not made by Apple.

  • DVD Player not working w/ External device

MacBookPro 9,2 with 10.8.2.  DVD Player doesn't work with any USB external device, even apple devices.  MAJOR flaw as this issue doesn't exist on mac mini or retina macbook pro.  Why can't they use the same framework?

The Apple USB SuperDrive is only be compatible with Apple systems that do not have a built-in SuperDrive.

  • Dvd player not working with os lion

my dvd player has stopped working since I installed Lion

Can't really be sure that you're having the same problem since the OP never posted back about their problem and we don't know what it is, so.... have you tried an SMC and PRAM reset? That is sometimes helpful:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I also assume you have it set to show the icon on the desktop, open it with the app of your choice, etc, etc? If other Macs read the CD, then there might be a problem with the drive. A good way for a free diagnostic session would be to make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar - any out of warranty repair would not be free of course, but at least you'd know what is going on.

  • DVD Player not working with LION

DVD Player crash in 10.7.2 LION - at the start of DVD Player loading -  is there a work around - I use VLC no problems

    Thanks.
That is correct. I've determined that Default Folder X won't be the problem on my friend's MB Pro since they don't use the application. They are off for some One on One time with Apple to get to the bottom of this apparent upgrade problem with Lion.
On a personal note, my MB Air is not able to make use of the Remote Disc feature. I'm not sure if this might be network related as I only see the MacPro drive occassionally and am never able to make a full connection to share Word files on a CD etc.
I'll work on this more after xmas.
    Happy Holidays!
