Apple DVD Player Surround Sound

Hello
I recently purchased a M-Audio Firewire 410 and will buy the M-Audio LX4 5.1 set.
I will use these for monitoring and voice over for feature films.
I've been getting familiar with the FW-410 and with Soundtrack Pro everything works perfectly and the sound goes to the channels I selected.
After that I was trying to play back a DVD (Bad Boys 2) in Apples DVD Player to see if the sound was outputted to the correct channels 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. It did not work and the sound was outputting through channels 1 and 2 only. I've tried several preferences in DVD Player, Audio MIDI Setup and FW-410's Driver Settings. Anyone have any suggestions to how I might solve this ?
Also I have the most recent drivers and updates.

Thanks, I've tried to change those settings in Audio MIDI Setup but once I change the sound to Encoded it won't allow me to use the FW-410 as an output. So I tried using the Built in Optical Out and pluggin it into the S/PDIF input of the FW-410 hoping it would then output it decoded into the correct channels, unfortunatly it didn't work...
Now I tried VLC with a diferent film and it changed the channels orders again, in Bad Boys the center channel was in number 6 and in the next film in channel 4... this might get annoying if I'm going to have to change the wires for each movie I watch...
Is there any other DVD players for Mac out there that will give you the options of controlling the audio outputs ?
If not I guess I'll have to stick with VLC.

  • Apple DVD Player Sound

I have been using my apple for sometime watching DVD movies on the apple DVD player and I have noticed in some movies the sound will fade in areas in the same part. First I thought it was just the built in speaker in my tower, but then I bought M-Audio Sound Card 5.1 and Logitech 5.1 speakers and it still does it. If I was to watch it on a normal DVD player, the sound will be fine.
Is it the way the movie (sound) was made and how the apple DVD player reads it?
It kind of gets annoying when you are expected to hear a big explosive sound, gun fire, or just talking and it sounds quiet then goes back to normal.
It has been doing it with every update of MAC OS X and was wondering if Tiger would fix this since it has a more updated DVD player
or any other way of fixing it?
    Thanks

That's strange, that should have solved the problem. Turning on "Disable Dolby Dynamic Range Compression" should have made all the sound output from a DVD (i.e. dialogue, sound effects, music, etc.) sound at the same sound level. The Dolby Dynamic Range Compression in Apple DVD Player is responsible for the variation of sound output level of different audio on the DVD, i.e. such as a guy in the background yelling would sound more extra faint than a guy yelling in the foreground, in which the sound is "enhanced" by the Dolby Dynamic Range Compression.
Have you tried your DVDs in another Mac DVD playing software such as VLC Player? Is the problem also present in another user account? If the problem is system, perhaps trying to zap the PRAM wouldn't hurt. PRAM memory hold such things as video settings, sound settings, date and time, and boot disk.

  • Apple DVD Player sound level low

What can I do to raise the sound level in Apple DVD Player?
The player's volume slider is on maximum, and the system volume is about 3/4 of the way up.
I am using amplified speakers and they are normally set to about 1/4 of full, but for DVD playback they have to be turned up to almost 3/4.
    Thank you.

After repairing permissions and running "Applejack", un-checking "Disable Dolby Dynamic Range Compression" worked.
    Thank you again.

  • How do I connect Apple TV and surround sound to my projector?

My current set up is that I have a projector connected to my Blu-Ray player. My surround sound speakers connect to my Blu-Ray player. They all came in the box together and the speaker wires all go into the Blu-Ray. Everything works perfectly.
However now I have bought an Apple TV and although I can play it through the projector, the sound is only through the projector and not the surround sound. I tried plugging the Apple TV in the HDMI in the projector and then connecting the Apple TV to the Blu-Ray via optical cable, but that didn't work.
In the back of the projector there is 1 HDMI port and an audio port but no optical port
In the back of the Blu-Ray, you have the speakers, the HDMI, the audio in and the optical port.
How can I connect everything so that I can use my Apple TV with surround sound?

The manual doesn't say anything an optical port on the BD ?

  • Clock freezes after using Apple DVD Player

I am having a small and annoying issue with the Apple DVD Player (v 4.6.5). This just started happening recently. Everytime I run a DVD (or video TS file, etc) on the software player-it performs as usual. After quitting the application and choosing to eject the disc, I notice there is a longer lag from when I first used the computer, then the little colored wheel of death spins, and eventually Apple DVD Player closes.
The problem, however, is after the application is closed out, my time freezes in the status bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (As I write this it says 1:16 and the time in the apple "date and time" preferences panel of OSX says it's 2:14-which is the real time) If I drag the cursor up to the time status bar in the upper right hand corner, it turns into the spinning color wheel, and back again once dragged out.
Once the computer restarts, the time in the upper right goes back to normal with no spinning wheel (until I open Apple DVD Player and quit out of it again). I know this is not an earth-shattering issue, but it is fairly annoying and abnormal. If anyone has suggestions, please help.

It sounds like you found your answer but I also wanted to mention that this is a known BUG when using DVD Player and the Digital Optical Out of a G5. If you look at activity monitor when the Clock is dead and you get the Beach Ball the SystemUIServer will be listed as not responding. If you Force quit this process everything should start working again. As long as the LoginWindow Process is running the SystemUIServer will restart when needed after the force quit.
HOWEVER, The other part of this bug with Digital Optical Out is that sometimes the LoginWindow Process will also stop responding. In this case a Log-Out is the only way to correct the problem. The third part of this bug is sometimes the Finder also stops responding but a Relaunch will fix that.
As I said it sounds like you found your problem but I wanted to post this incase others out there using the Digital Optical Out read this and don't correct their problem.
Also, If you were using the "DOO" by deleting the .plist will set the DVD player back to SYSTEM falsely making one think the problem is fixed.
Last I know this is a known bug because I submitted it as a bug to Apple and received an e-mail stating they know of this problem already.

  • Scripts works in Simulator and Apple DVD player but not on TV

I have a basic project with two different tracks.
The first one is video and audio. Plays "as is".
The second has video, two audio and one subtitle. Depending on which button, the second Track should be played with different audio and with/without subtitles.
(I use GPRM 1 to set the subs stream, GPRM 2 for the audio and GPRM 3 for menu button navigation).
On the second Track I have a pre-script that sets the streams depending on the value of GPRM 1 and 2.
Works fine in Simulator and in Apple DVD player, but not on the stand-alone player.
Any idea what might be the issue here?
    in short:
Button 1: Play Track 1 "as is" (audio 1, no subs)
Button 2: Play Track 2, audio 1, subs on
Button 3: Play Track 2, audio 2, subs off
Button 4: Play Track 2, "as is" (audio 1, subs off)
Menu button and End Jump should go to the corresponding menu button.
    Many thanks for your help.

It is part personal preference, part artistic, part what makes the user experience the best so there may not be one "right" answer and I have often made menus one way than changed them when viewing the DVD for something that seemed to work better.
Looking at you description I started playing with some ideas in my head and started typing them, then changed what I was writing
It sounds like you want chapter selections for both track 1 and track 2? If so it may make sense to have the initial menu have Track 1 and Track 2 buttons which then link to sub menus where there is "Play All," selections for each section of each movie and one last button for the preferences.
Alternatively you could also place the preferences selection button on the main menu, though since Track 1 does not sound like it really has preferences you need to make sure that users do not become confused and think they have turned something on/off and are not seeing these options when they thought they selected them when they play back Track 1.
Also with 6 to 8 chapter markers you may be getting close to the point where scripting could make it easier if your selections are just to play the sections - in other words for track 2 four stories take care of the combinations Audio 1/Sub Off, Audio 1 Subs On, Audio 2 Subs Off, Audio 2 Sub On. If the chapter selection starts the track a scene then plays through you can target chapter markers in the story so 4 stories takes care of it. If you are just playing sections you would need 4 x 6 or 8 chapters - 24 or 32 stories roughly. But it is actually fairly quick to do - just set up the intial Play All with all subtitles and audio selections unchecked except for "1" then copy from there. Probably should take under 10-15 minutes or so
Put a real quick thing together for a quick view of the tracks. I can flesh it out more if you like.
    http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/081107Sub.dmg
The main menu will be the title menu, then the sub-menus (including the set up menus) can be placed in the same VTS as the applicable tracks which can help a bit with DVD performance speed. Since there is 6 to 8 chapter markers on a track each of the main sub-menus would have 8-10 buttons which can work in the design.

  • Screensaver in Apple DVD Player - what does this mean?

    Hello,
I am building a dvd based kiosk using a MacPro and Apple DVD player running to a large plasma monitor. The setup works great except for the fact that when the kiosk is not being used, the menu screen will cause a burn-in on the monitor (this monitor does not offer display tracking, anti-burn technology). It appears that in DVD Player version 4.6.5., Apple has taken this into account and offered a preference under "Full Screen" to "Allow Screensaver on DVD menu in kiosk mode" - this sounds like what I need. However when I select this option, and kiosk mode, the screensaver never starts. I have played around with all of the settings in the DVD player and screensaver, but nothing works. - thanks you in advance for any suggestions!!!!
    MacPro 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4)

I think I just answered my own question!
I can get around using a screensaver if I set DVD Studio Pro to timeout the main menu to a looping "screensaver type" video that I can create. This would allow the viewer to watch any video on the DVD, which would end by going to the main menu, which would then stay on the screen for two minutes, and then start the "screen saver video", I can then put a clear screen size button over the entire screen, so that the user can press enter to sent them back to the main menu. This will actually work a lot better than the Apple screensavers anyway..

  • Apple DVD Player will not launch

I have a B/W G3 Tower/Desktop as well as a G3 PowerBook (black laptop). Both run OS 9.2.2, QT 5.0.2, and Apple DVD Player v1.2.
When I try to launch the DVD Player on the tower, I receive the following on a pop-up window:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because it cannot find the required hardware. Try reinstalling Apple DVD Player. (204)"
The following pops up when I try to launch the DVD Player on the G3 PowerBook laptop:
"Apple DVD Player cannot open because the required hardware was not found. If you have another application open that uses sound or video, quit that application and open Apple DVD Player again. If you are using a PowerBook that requires a DVD-Video PC Card, make sure the PC card is properly installed in the appropriate slot. (21)"
Both used to work but for some reason have abruptly stopped. I'm going crazy trying to figure it out. Speech is turned off and I don't have any other video or DVD apps open.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

you may need to reinstall your operating system because it sounds like you dvd rom driver is damaged but there is a way around this to
go to google and search for a program called patch burn this application will reinstall a fress driver for your cd dvd rom drive but unknown if this will even work because if the file is currupted you may end up locking out the cd drive driver and your cd drive will stop working in os x and you will need to reinstall the operating system
    but try patch burn first

  • Apple DVD Player not recognizing external speakers

I have connected a pair of Logitech V20 notebook speakers to my MacBook Pro. I adjusted the System Preference settings/Sound/Sound Effects - play sound effects through "Logitech USB Speaker" and that works fine. I can hear my laptop's beeps through the external speakers.
But when I put in a movie DVD and the Apple DVD Player boots up, the sound does not come through the external speakers. So, in the DVD Player, I selected Preferences/Disc Setup/Audio/Audio Output and the external speakers are not there - only "System Sound Output" with nothing else available/recognized.
So, how do I get the DVD Player to put the sound out through my external speakers and not the laptop internal speakers?

"System Sound Output" at DVDPlayer's preferences is just fine - it refers to the output that has been selected at System Preferences - Sound
No sound from USB speakers when booting is o.k., too: At this point those drivers that are needed haven't loaded yet.

  • Apple dvd player / external dvd drive issue

i recently bought a LaCie d2 external dvd drive, since my desktop g4 only has an internal cdr drive. I am running osx 10.4.3, which i installed through this dvd drive. yet now, when i put a DVD movie into the drive and try to open Apple DVD Player, it says
"There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. [-70012]"
i know this is a third party drive, but can anyone help me out? pleeeease?

This is to be expected. DVD Player will only work
with an external DVD drive if the Mac has an internal
    DVD drive.
However you may overcome this limitation using PlayerPatc

  • Menu buttons not working in Apple DVD Player

I am having a real problem. I have a menu with three buttons. The default button takes you either of the other buttons (depending on whether you press right or down on the remote). These two buttons are auto-action and proceed imediately to other tracks. This works perfectly in home DVD players and in the Apple DVD Player using the "remote". Howver, if I try clicking the buttons using a mouse on the Apple DVD Player window, they DO NOT work! I have buttns over video on the same disc and these work perfectly by clicing on them with the mouse. Has anyone else had a problem like this and if so, have you found a solution? Many thanks!

Is the one that doesn't work a layered menu? DVD Player does not work correctly with layered menus, it takes one click to switch to the selected state, and a second click to activate the button.

  • Apple DVD Player installers won't recognize Lacie d2 16x4x12x

    Greetings :
My eMac has a CDR internal drive only.
I just upgraded to Panther (upgrade disks) and I'm running 10.3.9.
I'm trying to get the Apple installers to recognize the Lacie d2 I just got, so that I can install the Apple DVD player (software update?) or import a DVD player from another machine.
The software won't install because it says it can't detect a proper drive, and the player I imported won't open for the same reason. I tried using Patchburn, Pacifist and the installed Installer on my eMac to no avail.
    Here's what my system profiler says about the d2 : : :
    FireWire Bus:
    Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
    LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0:
    Manufacturer: LaCie Group SA
    Model: > LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD drive LUN 0
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Vendor Supported
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    Speed: 400 Mb/sec Speed
    Unit Spec Id: 24734
    Unit Software Version: 10483
    Firmware Revision: 2.07
I believe the Lacie d2 I just got is the previous generation,
no lightscribe. It works great (plug an play) for burning data but I'd really like to use the native Apple DVD player to watch DVD video with the drive. I downloaded the free/open source VLC media player and it seems to work well enough,
but I'm on a mission to use Apple software if possible.
I'm also thinking of upgrading to Tiger soon so I'm wondering if I'll have any corresponding issues there.
Oh, and I did download and install the latest driver was from the Lacie site.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   700 MHz / 384 MB / 40gig / CDR internal

BTW: here is the fix in case anyone needs it
Follow it exactly, it works !
    1. Download and install Pacifist.
    2. Insert Mac OS 10.3 CD in drive.
    3. Select Open Mac OS X Install Packages button in Pacifist. It will ask you to swap out all three 10.3 install disks.
    4. Click the Find button and type "DVD". A long list should show up.
    5. The important files/folders to replace are:
    -AppleAltiVecDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRadeon8500DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
-ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver (if graphics card is installed)
    -ATIRadeonDVDDriver.bundle
-ATIRage128DVDDriver.bundle (if graphics card is installed)
    -DVDPlayback.framework
    -DVD.framework
    -rtadvd
**There are many duplicates of the files/folders above in other languages. I only chose to install English.
    6. Select each or all and click Install.
    7. Choose to replace all existing files.
    8. Restart. Repair permissions.
I didn't bother to try to install only the English versions...just installed and replaced all the items on tha list

i have a G4 with 10.5 I am getting a Apple dvd player cannot find software it needs, how do i reinstall it thanks

I solved this by reset of the Wifi (unplug cable and power to both modem and wifi ... wait 60 sec ... plug in modem cable and power ... plug in wifi power and LAN to modem ... restart AppleTV and Mac ... Turn Home Share 'OFF' in iTunes then back "ON" ... it took ~60 sec for the AppleTV to pick up my Mac in computers.

  • Can you change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player?

I'm trying to change the hotkeys in Apple DVD Player. Really, all I want to do is add a hotkey for slow motion. I need the hotkeys because I'm using a ShuttleXpress shuttle mouse and I want to beable to click a button to put it in slow motion instead of having to use the normal mouse. Thanks

you can easily assign a keyboard shortcut to slow motion in keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts. however what you want is not a shortcut but a reassignment of a mouse button. the only tool I know that might be able to do that is [USB overdrive|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7115]. you'll have to find out if it works with your particular mouse.

  • Invisible Auto Action Buttons not clickable in Apple DVD player

I've put some Easter Eggs in my menus which are invisible and auto-action.
In simulator, you can access them with the controller by pressing a particular arrow button from a particular selected menu item. They are also accessible by clicking directly on them with the mouse.
But in Apple DVD player they are only accessible with the controller; clicking on them with the mouse doesn't work.
Is this just a limitation of Apple DVD player?

If you've set them to be Invisible why would you expect them to be clickable. The whole point surely is that they are Invisible.
