Apple employees?

So how does this support forum work? Are there actual Apple support staff who monitor them and reply to questions with advice (in the same way that you have, say, a tech support call centre), or is it overwhelmingly good Samaritans who answer what they can?

Hi artiste-extraordinaire!
 Discussions is a User To User Forum, that is monitored by Apple employees for content.
The Apple Hosts & employees do occasionally respond, but it's "overwhelmingly good Samaritans who answer what they can".
An Apple Employee's post, is distinguished by, a avatar, under there Apple Alias.
Discussions Hosts, have a avatar displayed.
Hosts are Apple employees, as well.

  • Apple employee backup my phone before reloading the software.  When I checked my photos they were gone.  Is there a way to get the missing photos down loaded?

An Apple emplyee in a Seattle store backed up my phone data before clearing it and reloading the software.  He was trying to resolve a problem that I was having with the phone.  When I checked my photos I discovered that they were all gone.   Also lost a lot of new contacts.  It appears that only older data was restored.  Is there a way to find out if my photos are backed up any were?  As a note, I have had this problemsince I got the phone.  I bought it at Best Buy but they said that they could not fix the problem.  They told me to talk to the phone company.  AT&T looked at the phone and said that it was an Apple problem.  There is no Apple store where I live in southern Oregon so I had to wait until I got to Seattle to try and get it fixed.  Apparently on one owns the problem.  Its my problem to fix.  The next step is to get another phone.  Probably not from Apple.  That is my story and sany info would be appreciated.  Cathy

Thanks for the reply however this does not help.  When I check the cloud it shows that I have only 20 photos.  In reality I had a lot more than that.  All the photos on the cloud are those that I have taken since I was at the Apple store.  When I check cloud storage usage on my phone it says that I have 5.1 GB of photos.  This is a lot more than the 20 that I can see.  I am not sure what the Apple employee did to my phone.
Still looking for answers.  It is really too bad that I can not talk to an Apple person to get help since they messed up my phone.

  • Sometimes Apple sends emails to me in Dutch.  My language is English.  An Apple employee told me my initiating profile shows Dutch.  He did not know how to change it.  How do I?

Apple sends emails to me in Dutch to one of my email addresses.  My language is English.  An Apple employee told me my initiating profile shows Dutch.  He did not know how to change it. How do I?
(Note:  When I bought my first Apple product, I used a Shaw email address.  This year I changed my primary email address to a gmail one.  The gmail one is apparently on my Apple profile.  Nonetheless, the Dutch messages go to my Shaw email address.)
    Thanks!

    Hi, ruthrr.
This sounds like your language preference is set to Dutch on your Apple ID.  I would go to My Apple ID, Manage Your Apple ID and change the language and contact preferences.
    Cheers,

My iphone was stolen, I was told by an apple employee in canada that sometimes their customers get discounts on the next purchase is this true?

Not from Apple, but if your carrier subsidizes the cost of the iPhone and you are eligible for an upgrade price with a new phone.

You can't speak to an Apple employee online, only by phone. Click on the 'contact us' link at the bottom of this page for numbers.

  • Can Apple Employees hack my iCloud/iMessage/iTunes/Private Apps/Photo Sharing?

Can Apple Employees hack my iCloud/iMessage/iTunes/Private Apps/Photo Sharing? I was recently in the Apple Store and was asked for my Apple Id/password, and to enter it onto the stores iPad. Coincidently, my email associated with my Apple ID was hacked, and numerous times a day I will be asked for my Apple ID password for iMessage and iCloud. I finally changed my email and password for APPLE ID and now literally every 45 seconds a screen for iCloud pops up. What can be accessed using my iTunes account? I had personal and private data including bank accounts, photos, location enabled GPS for most apps. Is it possible that an Apple employee (with good reason) could get a hold of this information??

We have become familiar faces since I go into the Apple Store and we know some of the same people through mutual friends. Everything I know about her she has told me, and mostly just innocent conversation at the apple store. I'm not going to report someone is stalking me if I dont know for a FACT that she is stalking me. It didnt catch my attention until a few friends who don't know her, just the situation started noticing it. I changed my apple ID so hopefully it stops, but like I said - it came to the point of being too frequent to be a coincidence. I guess re-routing back to my original question ....... Can an Apple Employee hack into my account and download the apps under my Apple ID and use my iMessage, iCloud, ect.... I don't understand why it is such a secret! its either a yes or no question. I don't feel comfortable knowing that I have had devices (not my own) that have been granted permission for iMessage (I received the notification on my ipad that another ipad had turned on imessage under my apple ID), and at the time I was not aware that someone would desire the need to log into my account to read my imessages - or could actually do it? I'm very very secretive about passwords, and would not even write on the forum about this if I didn't think it were possible. I appreciate all of your responses, I truely do but this has been going on since before March when I first created the post so understandably its been on the back of my mind for quite some time!

  • Repair iTunes? Apple employees - are you listening?

My coverflow art in iTunes seems "glitchy." And what I mean, is that as you scroll through them, the image gets distorted for a few seconds. It never did this before.
Also, the scroll bar below the album covers has "disappeared."
Is there a way to "repair" an iTunes installation without reinstalling?
    Please help.
Apple employees are welcome to respond.

Apple employees except on rare occasions will not respond here. These forums are user-to-user only.
That's not to say that no one here can help. We'll need more information, though: what version of iTunes you're running, some basic system specs, where you're getting your album art (from the iTunes Store or imported from other sources) and what if anything has changed on your system since last it worked correctly.
Meanwhile, though this article doesn't specifically cover "glitchy" operation, the tips suggested might help:

  • Why would an Apple employee LIE to me about a warranty that didn't exist?

I am so angry right now because over the last 5 years my husband and I along with our kids have consumed several Apple products including IPad's (3;64g), IPhone's (4; 2/4g), MacBook Pro (2), MacBook Air, IPod's (4; 2/32g 2/64g) and on all of our products we purchased the (claimed) insurance protection for every item. For the most part just about everything was purchased from Best Buy but after waiting weeks for the IPad 64g white to still not be available there I decide to go to my local Apple store where they had some available. So I go to make the purchase and the Apple employee suggest that I take advantage of the care plan "just incase anything goes wrong, it stops working, gets messed up or something,"I thought ok, cool so I make the purchase with the care plan that expires April 2013. It just so happens, about a year later I have an accident with my IPad and it cracks! So I figure ok, it's fine I have the care plan. Bull! I take it back to the Apple store where I purchased it and was told Apple didn't offer a warranty like that at the time of my purchase. So I pulled up my receipt and showed the employee and he said "oh, that's not a protection plan that's a care plan for like if you had any questions and needed assistance working or setting up your IPad. Seriously! Keep in mind I had the IPad 1 that I retired to my daughter and my husband had his iPad 2 so would I have purchased this plan for assistance on operating a new IPad? He then mentioned that they do offer a protection plan now but only for the "New IPad's". Really! So basically the previous Apple employee that assisted me in the purchase misled me into purchasing a product that I wouldn't have ever needed. If Apple pays a bonus for having a number of the care plans sold then that employee may have taken home a big fat check! I have called and complained about the situation but in reality nothing has been done or will ever get done about this issue. Is there anything other than a new purchase that could get my IPad fixed?

I have the same exact thing with Best Buy but it is through Best Buy for my other products so the information he was telling me sounded accurate. If anything was to happen with any of my purchased items with them, it is covered. Point blank and period.
You do not have the exact same thing with Best Buy. Once again, you are confusing insurance with Apple's AppleCare extended warranty.
That is Best Buy's insurance program which has nothing whatsoever to do with Apple's standard warranty or AppleCare extended warranty.
You misunderstood since you obviously don't know the difference between an extended warranty and insurance.

  • My talk talk email account was set up by a helpful apple employee to only send mail using an iname account (it worked perfectly well before this). How do I undo this?

my talktalk email account was set up by a helpful apple employee at one of their shops to only send mail via an iname account.
It had worked perfectly well before.
I have tried but been unable to undo this. Help!

From the Mail menu bar, select
    Window ▹ Connection Doctor
Look for the unwanted SMTP (outgoing mail) account in the window that opens. Double-click it. Another window will open, showing a list of all the outgoing mail accounts. The unwanted one will be selected. Click the minus-sign button to delete it, then click OK.
If there's more than one unwanted account, repeat.

Why should I drive an hour to a store, when I called Apple SUPPORT and spoke to an Apple employee who directed me here?
    That doesn't quite make sense.
There are a number of instances where it has become clear Apple support have directed callers to Apple Discussions - often because it actually IS the best place to get answers for a specific question or issue, but sometimes it happens in error, and it should never be suggested on the basis that Apple Discussions is where anyone can get direct support from Apple itself. There are a few Apple staff who visit and help from time to time, but rarely. If you look at the post count of those who do contribute, you'll see the number is typically very low. This resource can only ever be assumed to be user-to-user, and as such there are some things - hardware faults for example, where there is little other than initial troubleshooting help that can be got here.
For anyone in a similar situation as you were, if Apple support on the phone say to post here, ask that the call be escalated upward!
    Meantime, good luck!

  • Apple employee: Does AppleCare covers a short-lifed MBP battery?

If AppleCare does cover, to what extent ? for example, will apple replace my MBP battery for free if it drops to 80% of the original capacity, in one year? any restrictions on the replacement, such as 300 battery load cycles?
Thank you, i hope to see definitive answers!

You're not very likely to get an Apple employee to answer here, as these are user-to-user forums. (It does happen on rare occasion, but it truly is rare.)
From watching the notebook forums here for a few years, I'd say this: Apple is vague on this subject. Your best bet, if you feel your battery isn't working as it should now or some months down the road, is simply to call AppleCare and negotiate what you can. Reports vary, and your mileage may vary based on who you talk to and how you present your case. (You can at least change who you talk to if you're not satisfied with the initial answer. Ask to speak to a supervisor or, if necessary, to Apple Customer Relations if you feel you're not getting the warranty service you deserve.)
Sorry I can't give more definitive answers, but it's one of those issues that doesn't have a definitive answer, unfortunately. You'll get a variety of responses from people here, all reporting different experiences. Ultimately, the answer is simply, "Call Apple and find out."
All that said, if the situation is extreme and obviously points to a defective battery, such as only getting one hour of charge from a calibrated battery that is only a month old, you shouldn't have a problem getting it replaced under warranty. But your question of where Apple draws the line in less extreme cases is what can't really be answered by people here.

  • OSX SERVER COMPROMISED SAYS APPLE EMPLOYEE

I have been trying to resolve claims by my ISP that spam is being sent on my IP address. We have no Windoze boxes here, and I have kept telling them "Macs don't do this".
Our mailserver has been under a dictionary attack the last two days, and I contacted a local Apple employee that liases with small businesses here. He has sent a frightening email back. It says in part:
"I have heard a report of a MacOSX Server having been compromised through either a flaw or dictionary attack on the ssh service, and then the offenders running software on the server to distribute spam. This could be what has happened to you."
If so, this would be extremely serious.
    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Hello Brian,
I have come across Mac OS X Server boxes in the wild (more than one) that have been compromised by a dictionary attack. That said this is not a weakness in the operating system or in the SSH service itself but a result of a poor password or access policy.
There is a easy way to verify the most recent connections to a server. In terminal type the command "last". It will show you the most recent interactive logins. If a user with a unfamiliar IP address shows up you may want to take a good look at your server.
If you have been compromised some things you may want to think of. First document everything that you do. Save terminal sessions to disk or print them out. This is just in case you need a reference later or you decide to get someone else involved.
    - Perform a port scan on your system. Is there any service running that shouldn't be.
    - what do the following commands show you "last", "lsof" (open files), "lsof -i" (open files with a network connection), "ps -aux" (processes of all users, pid, and processes not associated with a terminal), "netstat" (network status and connections)
    - depending on the shell of the account that was compromised make a copy of the history file. By default it is Bash so get .bash_history.
    - On the boxes I have come across there were a couple of things in common. The script/person who compromised the box created hidden directories that started with a "." in one case the whole folder name was " ". I have seen these directories located in /tmp as well as ~/.ssh/ of the account compromised.
    - it is also not uncommon to have a IRC server configured and running on the compromised system. The ones I have come across had psybnc installed and running.
    - on one system the was a backdoor or a keystroke logger disguised under the name "bash" that maintained an outbound connection. This was running in memory only so I was unable to get the file to examine closely.
    - make an image of the system so that you can look at it off line later
    - rebuild your server from the last clean backup and go from there.
Block the the offending IPs at your firewall or better yet allow only the IPs that should be connecting to your server via SSH. If you are running 10.4 Server you can setup service access control lists for SSH and only allow the users that should be connecting to that service. There are several scripts that will automate the blocking of offending IPs that are performing SSH brute force attacks.
If you have any questions please ask.
Hope this was helpful and best of luck to you!
    - Barrett

  • Why do paid Apple employees earn forum points & rankings?

Why do paid Apple employees earn forum points & rankings? I thought the points system was "to increase community participation". Giving points to people paid to be here and putting them in the rankings runs counter to that intent.

    Hi, Jason -
No, I'm talking about the people with the silver Apple badges whose profiles say they're Apple employees.
At least some of them are paid to be in here, maybe others aren't and just come in here to be helpful on their own time, I guess I don't know. If you're paid, you don't need encouragement.
The only Apple employees who are paid to be here as their primary job function are the Hosts, the ones who display the purple apple badge.
Other Apple employees may post here. Usually it is on their own time, at which time they may or may not identify themselves as being an Apple Employee - if they do, they then display the silver apple badge.
On rare occasions Apple employees may post in an official capacity in order to address a specific need, but (historically, at least) this does not occur on a regular basis.
Yikes, I'd assume a company employee could provide useful info on the company's products. If an Apple employee doesn't give useful info...I hope that's someone who isn't working at Apple for long.
Apple has a broad and diverse enough product line that no one employee can possibly know it all.
Since most of the time a person who is identified as an Apple employee is posting on their own time, I see nothing wrong with thanking them the same way anyone else would be thanked.

  • Apple Employees only--upgrading iBook hard drive, not under AppleCare

Does anyone know how much it would cost to upgrade my hard drive from 14 GB to maybe 30GB? Also if I can upgrade, would the workers at the Apple Store transfer the data I have on my old hard drive to my new one for free?
    Thanks
iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.1.x)   14 GB hard drive

Do you mean you only want responses from Apple Employees? If so, you are barking up the wrong tree, I'm afraid.
This is a user-to-user forum, hosted by Apple for its users to help one another.
If you have a local Apple Store, you could enquire there.
If you are interested in some resources outside Apple's auspices, there are several hard drive upgrade services:
    MacService
    DT & T Computer Services
    MCE Technologies
    Good luck.
