Apple: encrypted backup facility in Time Machine, please

A couple I know have had Macs and their backup hard drives stolen.
The robbers now have access to all their data, including their customers' confidential records.
When I heard about this I immediately set my own computer to use a password after a brief sleep. But this is fairly useless when my backup drive contains all the same information - totally unprotected.
This is obviously a universal problem.
Would Apple please tweak Time Machine so it makes an encrypted backup each time, which can only be opened with a password? I'm sure this is not beyond the capability of Apple's clever programmers.

Backup is going to become a much more serious issue in the next year or two, as more people bring work machines home
In the next year or two? Where, pray tell, does that time frame come from? I hesitate to be rude and suggest it was pulled from a bodily orifice, but...
People have been bringing work machines home for decades. My first Mac was a Mac 128K, brought home from work by my dad in '84. Before that, he had an Epson laptop (with an LCD screen of 30 columns by 4 rows, smaller than the screen on my current calculator), which was, once again, brought home from work. Okay, yeah, my dad was a nuclear engineer, not an average Joe... but even the average Joe has been doing it for at least a decade at this point.
Backup has always been serious, regardless of what the data is. Securing of sensitive data has likewise always been serious. There is nothing going on today that changes this... you've just learned something new and it has changed your perception of the world, that's all.
I didn't know that admin passwords were so easy to bypass. That's a pity.
That's true regardless of the system you are using. Windows, Linux, Mac, whatever, doesn't matter. Encryption is the only sure way to keep your data safe, and even then today's best encryption is only safe based on current technology, and may be easily cracked in a decade or so.

  • Clicking "encrypt backup disk" crashes Time Machine Preference Pane

Everytime click "encrypt backup disk" Time Machine Preference Pane crashes on MacOS Lion. I have a 2TB disk partioned into 2x1TB volumes, could this be the problem? Are there any other reaons that might cause the crash?

It sounds a bit like your backups may be corrupted, and TM is having a tough time figuring out what's on the drive.
Try doing a +*Repair Disk+* on your TM drive, per #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Then do a "full reset" per #A4 there.

  • Do I need to encrypts backup disk for Time Machine to encrypt backups?

I have a new LaCie disk that I want to dedicate as my backup.  In case it is ever stolen, I don't want others to be able to retrieve files.
I've seen screen shots where Time Machine has a checkbox "Encrypt backups".  This seems like what I want, right?
But I'm first erasing the disk to get it ready for backups.  Do I choose:
    "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or
    "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted)"
I.e. will the option in Time Machine not appear unless I format the drive as encrypted?
    Thanks.

  • How do I get older backups off my Time Machine?

Hi! I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

    Hi CCinAK,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
If you are only looking to get certain data off of your Time Machine backups you would not want to use Migration Assistant. You would instead enter the Time Machine menu and select the file(s) you would like to recover. Please use the following article for the steps needed and as a resource.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
    Restoring specific files or folders
Choose Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine menu. The restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time."
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time. The timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup drive. If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
Note: Dates in pink indicate the data resides on your Time Machine backup device. Dates in white indicate the data resides on your Mac. In OS X Lion v10.7 and later, portable Macs include local snapshots.
You can also perform a Spotlight search from the Finder. Simply enter a search term in the Spotlight search field, and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a quick look.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • Time machine on external drive will not back up itunes media file on a separate external drive. Have already reformated itunes media drive, dragged itunes media backup file from time machine (old copy) and removed time machine plist and restarted.

Two external drives, one for time machine backups and a second (daisy chained firewire) for itunes media folder . Time machine fails to backup the media file saying could not be completed, with no error specified. Steps taken already include reformating drive with media, dragging older media backup file from time machine disc to media disc, and deleting time machine plist and starting time macine preferences upon startup. Media folder is approx 200 gb, mostly ripped dvd movies.
    Any help for this??
    Thanks

  • Can't backup on my Time Machine installed on Time Capsule

I use to manage all my time machine backups on the Time Capsule.
From some days until now, I noticed that the Time Machine scheduled backups just abort in the middle of the process, after it scans the files to backup.
My Time Machine is working properly and therefore I can also access to my Time Capsule when I use it as as wireless hard drive.
When it is starting backup, Time Machine disk is mounted on my MAC.
Any ideas on what is going on?

Pondini, I'm using the internal HD.

Do you have a few words missing in the original question ?.
When i upgraded from LION to MOUNTAIN LION it made NO difference at all to my MyBook Live !!!
reading the original post again and again, do you in fact have two My Book Live units, an old one and a new one ?

    Hello edjhsu,
Unless the drive is in a format that isn't compatible with Time Machine, the files will not be overrwitten. However it is typically a better idea to keep your files and your backup separate, especially since files on the Time Machine drive will not be backed up by Time Machine.

  • Backup Drive for Time Machine FILLS UP FAST!

    *Be forewarned!*
I have a new iMac 2.8 GHz with an internal 750GB drive (about 500GB free). I bought a 500GB external drive (Western Digital Book My Book™), and after just 4 days of running with Time Machine turned on, I get this error message, "Time Machine backup failed. Time Machine needs 175GB to backup, and only 150GB available." Huh?
I just spoke to someone at the Apple Store's Genius bar, and they recommend a backup drive that is twice the size of your internal drive. (which means a 1.5 TB drive: not cheap...LaCie costs $539)
Also, come to find out some programs simply "don't play nice" with Time Machine. A good example is MS-Entourage, which has a single database file (in the Main Identity folder) which holds all the info for your email, address book and calendar. Mine is 350 MB in size, and it is being backed up IN FULL every hour because, well...I use my email. And every time any changes are made to that single file, it is considered modified, which means it is backed up every hour on the hour, which can quickly add up.
The same is true for the Windows XP or Vista VM files created by Parallels or VMware Fusion. Each are single, 2+ GB files, and each time any change is made to this 'huge' file, it gets backed up repeatedly by Leopard's Time Machine.
_So the larger the backup drive for Time Machine the better_! I'm considering giving up on Entourage (kiss Microsoft goodbye!) and switching to Apple's excellent mail, address book and calendar programs!

    Tim,
I just switched from Entourage to Mail (for many reasons). Thus far, I love Mail. You may want to get the Widescreen plugin for it if you like the three-pane configuration of Entourage.
You should also be careful with Address Book if you have syncing set up in Entourage. In other words, probably should turn it off, along with any daemons you may have running. I lost data twice (once before my very eyes!) until figuring this out. Used Time Machine to restore a previous address book with all my contacts.
Thanks for the other information on this thread. Since I should be upgrading my old external drive anyway, it will help in purchasing a new machine for use with TM.

  • How can I delete undesirable backup files from time machine?

Can anyone give me details of how to delete undesirable backup files from Time Machine,
I'm trying to remove mackeeper which has been running since 2011
And I'm stuck at the first hurdle......
    Thanks

The problem I have is that i dont have an option to delete backups of this file on the options menu, and when I click delit or try to drag it to the trash I get a box saying " This operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified"
Iam really tempted to just delete mackeeper from HD library and Applications but it is stressed that I need to do the TM deletes first?

  • Remove disk from backup disks in Time Machine, old backups no longer accessible

I accidentally removed a disk from my backup disks in Time Machine. It said it wouldn't delete any backups, but after reconnecting it, I cannot access any previous backups through the Time Machine interface and it says "Latest Backup: None". The data is still visible on the drive.
What can I do? I really need these backups.
PS This poster appears to have had a similar problem but was never resolved: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4175446

  • I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Mac

I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

  • I am changing to a larger hard drive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything?

I am installing a larger harddrive on my Mac. Can I copy the Aperture library from my backup disk running Time Machine without loosing anything? I am getting help migrating everything else on to the new harddrive, but since copying the 350Gb Aperture library takes a lot of time, I am planning to do that part myself.

I found the following information on Time Machine help about restoring Aperture library from TM
    Restoring Your Aperture System
If you buy a new computer or use another system at a different location and want access to the Aperture library, you can install Aperture and then transfer the library from your vault (on your backup disk) to the other computer. If you experience equipment failure or other unexpected events, such as fire or weather-related damage to your equipment, you can easily restore the entire library to your new computer from a backup disk.
