Apple ethernet thunderbolt vs usb adapter

Which one is faster??
which one should i get??

Thunderbolt is much faster than USB.
That depends on which version of TB and which version of USB. if it's USB 2 then TB is much faster (20 times), if it's USB3 then TB is twice as fast, and if it's 3.1 it is the same speed.
USB2 480Mb/s
USB3 5Gb/s
USB 3.1 10Gb/s
Thunderbolt 10Gb/s
TB2 (releases this fall) 20Gb/s
Except USB2 all are much faster than ethernet so the choice of method will make no difference to network speeds (excepting USB2)

When is Apple going to come out with a Thunderbolt to USB adapter?

I have been waiting and in the meantime all around me windows pcs are running USB 3.0 devices that are very very fast.  I have been a apple/mac user forever and usually apple is bleeding edge tech but it seems the pc world is now caught up and even passing apple by.  Thunderbolt seems like a nice product but having to buy a $200-$300 hub adaptor to run anything is pretty lame
Newer Macbook Pros have USB 3 ports. I don't understand your reference to the PC world and USB 3. I've been using USB 3 devices on my Macbook Pro since last year. Read the specifications http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/

I'm having a brand new unopened Apple 5W USB adapter from UK for my iphone 5. I want an Indian version USB adapter. Will Apple Store replace my USB adapter for free of cost ?

Perhaps, but maybe not, as what can they do with one with the UK plugs?  I'm just saying regional things like that often have to be returned at a store in the country you bought them.
But, just go and ask as the worse they can say is no.  If they do say no they cannot exchange it, then for very little money you can buy a UK-to-India plug adapter and use that charger in India anyway.  Such plug adapters are only $2-$5 here in the USA on Amazon.

  • My thunderbolt to firewire adapter doesn't fit the firewire???

I bought the apple store "Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter" today.  I'm trying to put my old iMac in Target Mode and move old files.  The firewire cord doesn't fit into it???  I'm sitting here feeling pretty stupid and stumped?

Your firewire cord is the wrong size.  Apple's cord is 800 port.  What size is your cord?

  • Does the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter work on windows?

I'm planning on buying an Asus G55VW-DH71 gaming laptop, which has a thunderbolt port. I would like to be able to control my PreSonus digital audio mixer with it, and unfortunately, it only has a firewire for connecting to it. So, I would want to connect Apple's Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter into the laptop and the mixer's firewire cable.
Does the adapter work on windows 7/8?
Also - getting a macbook is out of the question.

I have pretty much the same need as you and purchased a HP laptop with Thunderbolt port and Windows 8.  I also picked up the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter.  I have been unable to get Windows to detect the Firewire side of the adapter.  Windows 8 seems to pick up the Thunderbolt controller correctly and shows it as an extension of the PCI express bus.
I have found no set of drivers that I can add that will get the Firewire side to be recognized by Win8.  Win 8 should have 1394b drivers native, so I don't know what the problem is.  I wish I could get this to work, because I just don't have the option of getting a MacBook for the things I need to do.
Right now the only other Thunderbolt to Firewire option on the horizon seems to be the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock, but that has 2 problems.... 1, it is still in pre-order and 2, it is ~$300.

  • Lightning to micro USB adapter with Otterbox Armor

Does anyone know if the Apple Lightning to Micro USB adapter will fit in the hole on the bottom of the Otterbox Armor series case?

not not just use the normal cable and then use a usb to microUSB converter?

  • Micro USB adapter?

I'd like to get a longer USB-Lightning cable than the one that came with my iPhone 5, which I think is the one that Apple sells. They also sell a "Lightning to Micro USB Adapter," but I'm not sure exactly what Micro USB is.
I have quite a few cables that have a standard USB at one end and a smaller USB connecter at the other end. These cables have generally come with external disk drives.
Would someone know if that is the same as the Apple Lightning to Micro USB Adapter?
    Thank you.

USB cables come in normal USB plugs( into hub PC etc )
at the other end you get a mini plug
OR the latest which is micro plug
You probably have the mini plug cable whereas the Apple product
is a lightning plug and at other end a Micro socket
This is to allow Apple to meet the world wide adoption of the micro cable
as the charging medium for ALL mobile phones along with USB power source
To reduce the multiplicity of chargers shipped worldwide every day
    "ultimately "
Look on amazon for the cables and the pictures will immediately make sense
    of the difference
so yes an Apple adapter and USB micro cable would give you a longer cable

  • Apple Ethernet USB adapter in Windows 8.1?

I'm not able to get my Ethernet (Lan-connection) to work on my 2013 MBP with the Apple Ethernet USB adapter.  I've gotten drivers loaded up for the adapter and it seems to be working...just Windows 8.1 gives an error that it can't connect to the internet because "incorrect IP address"??

Excellent and thanks for the "spot on" tip!  I only wish I had found it before bringing up a different compter to re-sync my Apple mobile products, which of course meant I had to rebuild my libraries on that system.
On Windows 8.1 64 bit I did find the steps to be a little different from what Steven outlined and for those less compfortable with technology I thought I would include a version edited for Windows 8.1 64 bit specifically.
Connect You Apple Mobile device to the PC with iTunes.
In the PC's Device Manager expand the "Portable Devices" entry.
Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose "Update Driver Software" from the shortcut menu.
Choose the option to "Browse my computer for driver software" and browse to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers and highlight that folder for the driver update.
Click "OK" then "Next" and your Apple mobile device should now be rocognized (verify this in iTunes)
Repeat for any other Apple mobile dvices synced on this computer.
    All credit to Steven, however!

  • Apple no longer making thunderbolt to firewire adapter!

I just visited an apple store today to be told that Apple are no longer making the thunderbolt to firewire adapter which was meant to be released this month (July). Calling Apple customer support also confirmed this. It is also no longer mentioned as a option, when ordering a new MBP retina on the Apple online store.
As I've just purchased a new MBP retina for portable video editing, the prospect of not being able to plug in all my legacy firewire drives to the MBP is very frustrating, and I'm sure many people are in the same situation. Trying to daisy chain via a USB 3 LaCie drive to firewire did not work when tested and it's likely that any other solutions via hubs etc, will probably require mains power. For ediitng on the road via bus powered drives, firewire is suddenly not an option at present.
Many of us have gone through these transitions before as Apple pushes new and better technology forward at the expence of backwards compatibility. Thunderbolt will be great, but curently it is expensive and not widely adopted, where as firewire drives are considerbaly cheaper than thunderbolt drives and many of us have a large number of these drives being used on a daily basis.
I'm sure other manufactures will be scrabling to bring a thunderbolt to firewire adapter to the market, however the fact that Apple has stopped making it before it was even released is alarming.

And yet, FireWire became an industry standard. Your argument is invalid.
Key word highlighted (in comparison to "has become"). As Shootist points out, it is harder and harder to find any kind of FW device out there. Hence my soon to be orphaned 11 external HDDs, 2 of which only have FW and probably be unusable when I have to replace my current Mac. The rest fortunately have USB2 too and will have to function in a slow speed crippled mode when the time comes.
Even Apple is hedging its bets, else why add two USB3 ports and the HDMI in addition to the purportedly wonderful TB?

  • Does the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter work w/ W540?

I have an external storage drive that relies on Firewire 800, or USB 2.0 - I'd prefer to use the Firewire! I discovered the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter ( http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Thunderbolt-to-FireWire-Adapter/dp/B008RXYOKY ), but I haven't seen any clones for sale... Does anyone know if it will work with the W540 and Windows 7?

    Hi DIgitalsmear
I bought one of this adapters to connect my firewire audio interface to my lenovo carbon X1 which has a thunderbolt out. And atm i have no proper connection going on, but i'm not yet sure whether it is because of the adapter or something else.
    greetings

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :
"Compatible only with MacBook Air Computers"... so I am not sure if I should open it.
When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • Is there a thunderbolt to usb 3 adapter available?

Is there a thunderbolt to usb 3 adapter available?

This is one nice thing that Apple could do for us 2011 MacBook Pro/Air, Mac Mini, and iMac customers with thunderbolt enabled USB 2.0 machines.
Thunderbolt drives/devices are still prohibitively expensive, and USB 2.0 is PAINFULLY slow.  I was disappointed that the thunderbolt display didn't support USB 3.0, and an adapter like this would allow owners of the Thunderbolt Display to keep the adapter plugged into the thunderbolt out port on the display, and have a USB 3.0 hub on the desk.

  • USB Adapter to Ethernet disconnect

I have Macbook Air and i use USB adapter to Ethernet and always get disconnected when sleep can anyone help me with that

Have you considered something like an Apple Airport Express unit? As this has an in-built USB printer sharing port you can then have your printer connected to it which then connects to Ethernet. It'll also give you wireless if you don't already have it.

  • Ethernet to USB Adapter Issues

When using the ethernet to USB adapter on the Macbook Air I am getting a red 'not connected' followed by an amber 'searching for ip address' (something along those lines). It keeps flicking back and forth between those two statuses. Once in awhile it will sucessfully connect but it will soon kick itself off the network and start filcking between them again. I am a university student and the University IT team are saying there is nothing wrong with the network so it must be an issue with my leptop. One of the IT guys said there could be an issue with the adapter itself but considering its a few weeks old I fail to agree with this.
    Anyone have any idead?
Thanks, PS I am connecting through DHCP

Apple recommends to connect the USB Ethernet adapter before starting your Mac.

  • What is faster thunderbolt or usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet

What is faster a thunderbolt to gigabit ethernet adapter or a usb 3.0 gigabit ethernet adapter?
    Thanks

Both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 have bandwidths that exceed gigabit ethernet so based on theoretical numbers they should perform the same. However, different product manufacturers will write different drivers and use different hardware so unless you test specific products the question can't really be answered. Probably have to wait until magazines such as MacWorld or other Mac related websites test and compare devices.
