Apple Ethernet USB adapter in Windows 8.1?

I'm not able to get my Ethernet (Lan-connection) to work on my 2013 MBP with the Apple Ethernet USB adapter.  I've gotten drivers loaded up for the adapter and it seems to be working...just Windows 8.1 gives an error that it can't connect to the internet because "incorrect IP address"??

Excellent and thanks for the "spot on" tip!  I only wish I had found it before bringing up a different compter to re-sync my Apple mobile products, which of course meant I had to rebuild my libraries on that system.
On Windows 8.1 64 bit I did find the steps to be a little different from what Steven outlined and for those less compfortable with technology I thought I would include a version edited for Windows 8.1 64 bit specifically.
Connect You Apple Mobile device to the PC with iTunes.
In the PC's Device Manager expand the "Portable Devices" entry.
Right-click the Apple iPhone, Apple iPad, or Apple iPod entry in Device Manager and choose "Update Driver Software" from the shortcut menu.
Choose the option to "Browse my computer for driver software" and browse to: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers and highlight that folder for the driver update.
Click "OK" then "Next" and your Apple mobile device should now be rocognized (verify this in iTunes)
Repeat for any other Apple mobile dvices synced on this computer.
All credit to Steven, however!

I'm having a brand new unopened Apple 5W USB adapter from UK for my iphone 5. I want an Indian version USB adapter. Will Apple Store replace my USB adapter for free of cost ?

Perhaps, but maybe not, as what can they do with one with the UK plugs?  I'm just saying regional things like that often have to be returned at a store in the country you bought them.
But, just go and ask as the worse they can say is no.  If they do say no they cannot exchange it, then for very little money you can buy a UK-to-India plug adapter and use that charger in India anyway.  Such plug adapters are only $2-$5 here in the USA on Amazon.

  • Can I connect my HP 4200tn Printer to my iMac using an ethernet/usb adapter

Here's my situation...PLEASE HELP! I have an HP Laserjet 4200tn printer that I'm trying to hook up to my iMac. The HP printer has an ethernet port, but I can't use the iMac ethernet port directly because it's being used for my dsl. I talked to the guys at the apple store & they told me to buy a usb/ethernet adapter from them(so here's the path...HP ethernet port to usb/ethernet adapter to usb port on the iMac). What's next? I'm assuming downloading the driver from HP but then what...I'm not a computer genius but I can find my way around a keyboard...PLEASE HELP!

If the adapter works with the printer, and you can get a recent and proper
driver from the HP support or downloads page, it should be able to print.
And there may be alternative drivers from gimp-print open source.
There also are powered ethernet hubs you can get, so all things ethernet
can be run from the main port on the computer and not be underpowered.
In fact, I have one in a box I don't use just yet because I can run my Epson
printer via USB over my AirPort Express (or AirPort Extreme) base station
and then the other printer, an all-in-one HP OfficeJet something, can run by
wire; since it won't work as a Bonjour printer and isn't seen as an option.
Some are supported and others may be conditionally able to work in these
different situations; so you may have to change your plans if a powered
Ethernet bridge, or whatever, becomes a second option; or other ideas fail.
The options include using the printer as USB, ethernet, or wireless; and
the latter may include the need to choose a compatible wireless bridge
or a wired Ethernet powered hub. And then seeing if you can get the
printer setup to see the printer when configured in whatever selection
or setup you've chosen to use can be equally ufn (unfun.)
If I wanted to run the HP I have by ethernet, it could do it; but you have to
note these things get an ID like the internet, sort of, if you use Ethernet.
Some adapters work and others may not; so it could be a hit & miss trial.
And some say there are advantages to the Ethernet if used on a network.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Macbook Air Ethernet USB Adapter an Energy Hog??

    Hey to all,
Recently picked up a MBA and am very happy with it. The only problem I've had is if I connect the USB Ethernet adapter (to get wireline ethernet at a few places where there is no wireless) my battery times are DRAMATICALLY reduced (by like 40%). Does this make any sense?? This happens even despite relatively light Internet surfing (checking email, etc.) I would have expected that hooking up the USB Superdrive (which is powered by the USB port) would have a big effect but the USB Ethernet adapter?
Is the USB port an energy hog? Any techies can explain this in layman's terms?
    Thanks,
    JLC

I don't have one but I'm not surprised. The ethernet will need to be powered whether there is an traffic going over it or not. So I don't think whether you are light browsing or transfering GBs of data that it matters much as far as powering the port is concerned.
I would suspect the Superdrive is a significantly larger power hog, but I would expect a reasonable amount of power loss by using the ethernet adaptor. 40% is higher than I would have expected but it doesn't seem like a huge surprise.

  • Ethernet lan adapter slow and intermittent

    Hi everyone,
I got my new W540 a couple of weeks ago. installed Windows 8.1. Ran system update , windows update.Everything went fine except for the Ethernet adapter that keeps giving me hard time. wired connection is slow and intermittent. whan i satrt a ping to the gateway, I get many timeouts though ethernet status is showing "connected". wireless works great and also if I use an Ethernet USB adapter evrything is fine. So I came to the conclusion that I might have a hardware problem and the Ethernet adapter is simply defect. Did anyone have the same problem. Any suggestions.
    Thanks.

Hmm, might be a terminology problem..
I thought you meant: "list one of each make/model/type, discard duplicates".
When you say "Ethernet adaptor", what do you mean - the wired interfaces? Physical (not virtual, tunnel)?
    Not WWAN?
Ethernet is actually a very broad term...
    example of WiFi:

  • Speed of Apple's USB Ethernet

How fast is Apple's USB Ethernet adapter for the MacBook Air? I read on this very board that USB Ethernet adapters only go up to 100Mbps because of the limitation of USB 2.0. However, I have actually found a USB-Ethernet adapter that claims to be Gigabit speed (see: http://www.ramelectronics.net/network/network-cards/usb-ethernet-adapters/usb-2- 0-to-gigabit-ethernet-adapter-ae2300/prodAE2300.html ) Given that, I'm now questioning how fast Apple's USB Ethernet adapter is.
    Thanks!

The Apple adapter is 10/100BT. The limitation is due to the USB port which supports speeds up to 480 Mbits/sec. This is not fast enough for Gigabit Ethernet which is 1000 Mbits/sec. I'm not sure what that third-party adapter does to attain a speed in excess of what the USB port can sustain. However, it requires a driver that only supports Windows. It's possible that the device will not work on a Mac.

That's what I thought too, then I bought this USB Ethernet adapter and on the package it says :

When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • USB Adapter to Ethernet disconnect

I have Macbook Air and i use USB adapter to Ethernet and always get disconnected when sleep can anyone help me with that

Have you considered something like an Apple Airport Express unit? As this has an in-built USB printer sharing port you can then have your printer connected to it which then connects to Ethernet. It'll also give you wireless if you don't already have it.

  • Ethernet to USB Adapter Issues

When using the ethernet to USB adapter on the Macbook Air I am getting a red 'not connected' followed by an amber 'searching for ip address' (something along those lines). It keeps flicking back and forth between those two statuses. Once in awhile it will sucessfully connect but it will soon kick itself off the network and start filcking between them again. I am a university student and the University IT team are saying there is nothing wrong with the network so it must be an issue with my leptop. One of the IT guys said there could be an issue with the adapter itself but considering its a few weeks old I fail to agree with this.
    Anyone have any idead?
Thanks, PS I am connecting through DHCP

Apple recommends to connect the USB Ethernet adapter before starting your Mac.

  • Apple iPod USB Power Adapter - ?

    Hello everybody!
I've got a problem with my new iPod mini and I hope you may help me.
After updating the new software for my iPod Apple told me to charge the battery with a Apple iPod USB Power Adapter which I don't have.
I tried to connect the iPod to my computer (Windows XP) but there's always the picture of the adapter on my iPod. I've tried to reset it, restart the computer and so on ...
But the display always shows this sign of the adapter.
I hope you can help me, I'd be very greatful.

    iPod mini   Windows XP

but it's already worked with my computer, the iPod worked alright, so I don't think that I need this stuff you've just named.
The iPod will work just fine without those things.
It's the update/restore process that needs the A/C adapter.
Anyway, you don't need to listen to me if you don't want to. I won't be insulted.

Can I connect my Apple TV to the Blu-Ray using an HDMI/ USB adapter?
If you can find such a thing.  I really doubt that exists since USB is a data connector not a video connector.
would allow me to run the audio through my stereo.
That would depend on this adapter.

  • Apple IPod USB Device Driver Not Installed?  WIndows not reconizing IPod!

Hoping someone can help me with my new Ipod Nano. I installed the IPod Updater and Itunes programs from the provided CD and formatted the Ipod. That all works fine -- the Ipod actually works, etc.
But during the actuall instation process, the Hardware Update Window came up for the 'Apple IPod USB Device' (I use Windows XP) I've tried to have it install automaticaly and manualy, without any luck. As a result, when the IPod is connected to the computer, I get a '!' on the device in Windows Explorer and neither ITunes or the Ipod Updater -- or Windows -- will reconize it!
If I connect my Ipod to the computer, the 'hardware' icon comes up in my system tray and the Ipod screen changes to the 'Do not disconnect' message. I can click on the hardware icon to 'remove' it. But I can't DO anything with the Ipod if nothing will reconize it!
I've tried updating the ITunes and Updater to the latest versions, plugged the USB cable into different spots on my computer, uninstalled and reinstalled everything, this time selecting the 'do not connect the Ipod to the computer at this time' option.....nothing. Windows just will NOT reconize the IPod and everytime I install the software I get that Hardware Update Window screen up!
Is there a driver for this I'm missing somewhere? What's going on? I can't do anything with my IPod and can't even find a phone number to call Apple for help!

    1-800-275-2273.
This might be an issue with your operating system. You might also want to try using it on another computer before calling them as they'll probably ask you to do so. This will isolate the problem to your computer and they might tell you to try calling Windows or getting the latest drivers for your computer.
