Apple Express and Fios router/modem MI424WR

I have a Verizon Fios modem/wireless router. Can I turn off the wireless radio of the MI424WR (making it now just a modem) and connect a airport express to it to assume the role of wireless router for my network. I have too many drops with the Fios router.
Thanks.

Yes, I have done the same thing. You don't even have to turn off the wireless on the Verizon router, but I did. My motivation was to get 802.11n capability. Make sure your AX has the latest firmware.
All I had to do was hook the AX to one of the ethernet ports on the Verizon router and the two lashed up just fine. Occasionally they loose sync, especcialy if there is a power glitch/outage. In that case, shut everything down and disconnect the AX. Restart Verizon modem to make sure it is working and has an Internet connection. After a few minutes reconnect the AX and they should resync.

  • Connecting Express to Cox Router/Modem ?

    Hello,
I have an iMac ( OS 10.8 ) connected via ethernet to a Cisco Router/Modem ( from Cox my ISP ), I have a network set up that all my iOS dervice can connect to with out a problem.
on the second floor of my house I have an Older G4 ( OS 10.4 ,no Wifi just an Ethernet conenection ), I want to connect the Express to the G4 so it will conect to the internet.
There are threads on this forum that suggest that this can not be doen and the olnly way I can use the express with my current set-up is to connect the express to the Cisco router/Modem and configure the express in bridge mode, this seems rather redundent as my Wifi network can be used throuthout my house.
When I try to connect the express to the G4 via the ethernet connection, I only get the flashing amber light and none of my devies are able to see the express.
Any help that you can offer would be great.
        Thank You
        John

After reading a bunch of stuff and not getting the results I wanted. I decided to try a different approach. My iMac is plugged into my router via Ethernet. I took my Apple Express and plugged in the power cord only and placed it on top of the Cox Router/Modem. Using Airport Utility I set the Express up as normal. when it was up and running I simply unplugged it, took it upstairs plugged it in and attached an Ethernet cable
to the Express and then to My G4 and it worked. I connected to the Internet then I downloaded the browser
    Ten Four Fox
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37761/tenfourfox
This browser works really well with my old machine.
Hopefully someone will find this information helpful.

Where can I download the firmware version 40.20.1 for Fios Router Actionec MI424WR-GEN3 REV I
    Thanks

Login into your router, go to Advanced, on the upper right is an option for Firmware upgrade.
    To login into your router:
    the address is  192.168.1.1
username and password are on the router label ...
A caution: others (myself included) have reported that the firmware update available at ...
    https://upgrade.actiontec.com
... is not necessarily the latest version.  E.g., my router reports the current version as 40.20.1 while the upgrade site reports the available "upgrade" as 40.19.36 ()obviously an earlier version).  I once mistakenly forced the upgrade and messed up things, until I finally reverted to the prior version.
I seem to recall that the explanation for this is that the latest firmware is usually pumped by Verizon and not Actiontec, which means all you have to do is let the router itself handle the chores.  Check this thread for more details:
    http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/ActionTec-MI424WR-GEN2-router-firmware-upgrade/m-p/401761...
BTW what version are you showing at this time?

  • Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together?

Can u run Airport Express and a wireless modem together at the same time?
I'm using AE purely for music distribution and have just bought a wireless modem for the internet (not a AE). However I can now only select either the AE network, OR the wireless internet network (it's BT HomeHub). Hence I can either play music or use the internet, but not together!
    Any ideas anyone..??
    Thanx
    David

You should configure your AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network provided by the modem. The instructions are in KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Airport Express and Fios Actiontec router compatible?

I have multiple Airport Expresses and an Airport Extreme.  Verion FIOS supplied it own Actiontec router which hooks into their Optical Network Terminal.  Since the Actiontec router took over, I've removed the Airport Extreme and the Airport Expresses work only to receive iTunes music from my computers. The Expresses do not extend the WiFi signal anymore.  The Actontec router is powerful but at the far end of the house, I no longer get a WiFi signal.  Previously with my Extreme and Expresses, I could extend the signal wherever I needed it.
I wonder if I can plug my Extreme into a hardwired LAN terminal from the router and use it to create its own WiFi network in the areas of the house where there is no signal?

Yes, this is possible if the AirPort Extreme stays permanently connected using an Ethernet cable.
If you want to create one "big" network, use the same wireless network name and password on the AirPort Extreme that you use on the Actiontec router. Setup the AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network". The Extreme must be in Bridge Mode to do this.
If you configure the AirPort Extreme with a different wireless network name, then you will need to log on to that network separately each time that you move your computer close to the AirPort Extreme.....then log back on again to the Actiontec when the computer moves back near that router.
If the AirPort Express devices are located where they can receive a good wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme....and you need even more wireless coverage.....,the Expresses could be reconfigured to "extend" the wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme like you were doing before.

  • Airport Express vs FIOS Router

Just had FIOS installed in my home. Really is awesome. They would not install my Airport Express stating the range is better on their router. Is this true? The range is good, but hate not using  my Airport Express that I just resently purchased. Is it difficult to reconnect the Airport Express to the FIOS modem? Any help you can give is appreciated. Thank you!!!

    Linette,
This can get confusing, since we are talking about two different things here.
It is possible to turn off the wireless function on the FIOS router, connect the AirPort Express to the FIOS router using a permanent Ethernet cable connection,  and use the Express to provide your wireless network.
That's a lot of work, with no assurance that there would be any improvement if you did this. Unless you are confident in your abilities and adept at troubleshooting, it would probably be best to leave well enough alone and use the FIOS router for your wireless service.
It appears that Allen was suggesting that you use the current FIOS router to provide a wireless signal and the Express (located a few rooms sway) to "extend" the FIOS router signal wirelessly.
That won't work, since the Express is not compatible with the FIOS router for this purpose.

  • Airport Express and FIOS

Tried to add airport express to an existing network with a FIOS router. This does not seem possible. Does anybody have a solution for this problem?
    Thanks

I tried some additional troubleshooting, the usual suspects like rebooting FiOS router, my Mac and so on and that had no impact. I was still seeing my AX drop from AirPort Utility and iTunes within just a few minutes of restarting although it never dropped off the network and was always reachable at it's IP address.
What has seemed to address the AirPort visibility issue is grabbing the just released software update to 10.5.7 and restarting my Mac. My AX has been visible in the AirPort Utility and iTunes for the entire day now.

  • Airport Express and Linsys Router

I am trying to help out a friend, here is what he has and wants to do...
They have an older iMac (bubble base) without Airport. The iMac is connected to a router (Linksys) and the router is in turn connected to his cable internet modem.
When he plugs in the Airport, he can see it, but cannot configure it. I think he wishes to use the Airport only (not sure why he wants to keep the router) but the Airport X has only one ethernet connection point.
Any suggestions on how he can hook this up so he can manage (secure)?
    iMac G5 Rev B / 20 / 1gig Ram / 250hd   Mac OS X (10.4)

They have an older iMac (bubble base) without Airport. The iMac is connected to a router (Linksys) and the router is in turn connected to his cable internet modem.
So the current network configuration is:
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN] Linksys Router [LAN] > (Ethernet cable) > iMac...correct?
When he plugs in the Airport, he can see it, but cannot configure it.
I am assuming that you mean he has acquired an AirPort Express Base Station (AX)...correct? How can he "see" it if the iMac doesn't have wireless capability?

  • Communication between apple express and XP

Replaced an Apple Extreme with Express. I can get the Express to see the additional windows client and on the windows machine i can finally get the machine to connect to the network-maybe. It claims it is connected but when i go to the Airport Utility [in XP] and try to do a manual setup it seems to see the network but will not connect, I get an error 6753 message.

Is the Apple TV working wireless? If it is wireless then make sure that it is connected to the wireless network. Try to ping the IP address from your computer and see if you get replies. If you are getting replies then the computer and Apple TV are communicating with each other.
I think you must have installed the Cisco connect software on your computer. Open the Cisco connect software and go to router settings. Click on advanced settings. It will open the router setup page.
Reduce the MTU size to 1365.
Go to security tab and uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests.
Go to the wireless tab and click on advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the Beacon Interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
If this doesn't work then contact the Apple support and see if they have any port number that you can open on the router.

  • Airport Express with Fios router connection issues

I have an Airport Extreme I am using with a Fios router (with the Fios wireless deactivated).
Prior to Fios, I used it with Comcast and never had the following issues:
When accessing the web from any of my Macs after a period of sleep or other disuse, the browsers return a "not connected to the internet" message (this is after the machine has returned to service for a time-- not immediately after waking).
Waiting a few more seconds and then trying again usually connects normally. Again, never did that with Comcast-- on and connected was on and connected.
AppleTV is almost NEVER connected when I go to watch it after a period of disuse. Usually, all maner of resets/restarts are required to get everything talking. I have both an older white ATV as well as the newest black model.
I should add that the Verizon tech knew next to nothing about Apple products when he came out. I ended up going on-line and reading all kinds of posts and arriving at my current configuration. Networking has always been a black hole in my Mac knowledge, so, rather than put all the blame on Verizon, I will say it's highly likely my set-up is not optimal.
Does anyone know how best to set-up this combination? I don't really even know how to tell you how I set mine up to begin with!

Unfortunately, if you have Fios, you really are forced into using their equipment and will have to configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode to work correctly with the Fios gateway.
Check to verify if the AirPort Extreme is set to operate in Bridge Mode, which would be the correct configuration for your setup.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the AirPort Extreme and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
The setting for Connection Sharing should be "Off (Bridge Mode)"
    Is that the case?

  • Verizon FIOS router Actiontec MI424WR not working with bonjour printing

Running OS X ver 10.9.3. Have a HPLaserJetP1102w. Just upgraded my Verizon FIOS router to Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I. Now my Mac can no longer find the printer wirelessly (it does, however, work thru USB). I see others have had this problem- and apparently some have solved it by changing settings on the router- but those settings options do not appear under 'advanced' for me. Verizon technical support, including the version one must pay for- was totally and utterly unable to help. Any suggestions for how to rescue this? Was all working perfectly with older Verizon router.

    >It's amazing to me that talkting to 4 or 5 Verizon Tech's, they all say "This is new to me,  I've never heard of this."  Ugh...
I've had EXACTLY the same experience. Phone support and the techs who come to my home apparently have no idea this has been happening for months and months. Clearly, this issue hasn't filtered down from the network engineers to support.

  • @ Airport Express and BEWAN DSL MODEM : no internet ..why ?

    Hello,
I connect a BEWAN ADSL Modem to my Airport Express and create a Airport network to have internet access for my Ibook.
I have choose "Ethernet" for Internet access with DHCP parameter.
Here's what i see : the Bewan ADSL modem give to the airport a public IP for the ip address (that comes from my Internet Provider), a netmask and a router ip that is 192.168.1.1.
On my Ibook, i could connect to the airport (printing is ok) but I couldn't have internet access : blank page under Safari...
My Airport Express has the last Firmware....
I think is a trouble between the BEwan ADSL modem and the Airport because I have Internet access when i directly connect the Bewan Modem to the Ibook.. a routing trouble ?
Do i have to manually enter IP parameter of my Airport ?
Have you the same configuration ?
    Thanks for helping me fast.

    ouba john,
I'd recomend trying a reset and reconfigure. Your setup sounds pretty simple. Hold in the reset button on your AE until the light blinks, let it restart, and choose your unmodified Airport express from the drop down menu. Run Airport Setup assistant from the Utilitiies menu and try to let that program do all the tweaking for you. Once it's up and running, you can go into the wireless settings with Airport admin and reconfigure security if you wish.
This is "just give this a try" advice. It seems I've heard odd things about ADSL modems, so good luck

  • I just connected to apple express and now my printer (hp office jet j5780) doesn't print.

I just connected to Apple Express network and now my printer no longer prints. Do I need a different driver.

If you changed routers your printer is still looking for your old one.  Here is how to get it back:
    1. On the front of the printer: Setup > Network > Restore Network Defaults.
    2. From the same Network menu run the Wireless Setup Wizard.
    3. Now, on your computer add the printer.  I'd help more but cannot unless I know what operating system you are using.
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
    I am employed by HP

  • Configuring my Airport Express and Cisco DCP3008 modem

    Hi,
I have an airport express version 7.6.1
and a cisco modem dcp3008 and having issues trying to connect the two. I have called cisco and they told me they would have to reconfigure it for 60 dollars. Is there anyone that has any suggestions for how I could manually figure this out?
My cable/internet service is Charter.... and they can't do anything ha ha.

You can effectively extend the Cisco's wireless network by creating a roaming network with both routers. Note that this would require that both routers be interconnected by Ethernet. Since the Express will perform a new role, be sure to perform a "factory default" reset on it so that it will be in its "out-of-the-box" configuration.

  • SA 520 and ADSL router/modem

we have 3 sites that i wanteed to conect together using 3 SA520 1 site is cable modem and the 2 other sites are ADSL with a Router /Modem supplied by provider currently each site has a old firewall connected which i had planned to replace. My question is are these suitable for ADSL as well as cable

As long as the ADSL or cable modem has Ethernet ports, they should be able to connect to SA500.
SA500 has 10/100/1000 WAN ports.  The SA500 also support PPPoE.
