Apple Fibre Card - M8940G/D vs LSI7202P

I'm wondering what the real difference between these two apple cards are, besides the fact that:
M8940G/D is a PCI card
and
LSI7202P is a PCI-X card
Main reason I ask is since the latter seems to retail for a considerable amount more on ebay, and I'm curious as to why. As far as what the card is to be used in: a single 2.0 xserve g5.. Is there any real benefit to using the LSI over the M89?

  • Apple fibre card LOUD

After waiting for who knows how long to get a fibre card from Apple, I popped it into my mac pro and was SHOCKED how loud the little fan on the card is.
    What's the deal?

Mine was quiet for almost 8 months, and now has started to make all types of noises.
I am sure that it is the fan on its final leg.
I have the LSI Logic card.
If anyone knows how to replace the fan, please opt in and tell

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It is possible you got a faulty card, or that the card was not properly seated, or that it doesn't have enough space in the slot to stay cool with other items in the slots. Try eliminating the latter as a possibility if you have additional PCI cards. Also if you have no other PCI cards, try changing slots to see if the slot on the Mac Pro is damaged. If all yield bad results, did you happen to migrate your data from a PowerPC Mac with the Migration Assistant? That can cause bad drivers to get migrated, and if there was a fiber channel card driver for the old Mac, it might be causing problems.
If not, then I'd assume you have a bad card, and I'd replace it.

  • Dual 2 GB fibre card

Can I use one cahnnel to a RAID ( already is)
and another to a Fibre port on a network switch ?
    OS X server 10.5.8
    Apple 2 Port Fibre card ( 2 * 2 GB)

Sure. The ports are independent, and can each connect to any fiber device (e.g. array, switch, etc.) you like.

  • How To Move Fibre Card To New Mac?

I just moved the fibre card to another G5 Dual 2.0 and downloaded the driver from Apple, but I'm not getting any love (green lights) on the fibre card. Not sure where the original discs are, so I'm just winging it.
Any advice on how to mount this monster? (It's NOT a blank RAID, so formatting is not an option) Thanks.
    -Alex

There is a fibre card utility from Apple that will report on the state of your fibre card and let you know if it's "working" from the computer's point of view.
If it's not in your Applications > Server folder it is here: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/fibrechannelutility20.html
On a more basic level open Apple System Profiler or About This Mac > More Info... and you will be able to see the hardware report on your computer. There should be a Fibre Channel report on the list if your card is installed and SCSI Target devices on it if it's running.
If your card isn't installed correctly you'll get zero love from the RAID in terms of mounting or data.
If the card is up and running then the mounting should be automatic. Does it show up as a SCSI target device on your System Profiler report? What does Disk Utility show when you open it up?
Any chance you had LUN masking on? It seems to me LUN masking should move with the card because it is hardware addresses but I've never had to do it. Can you Admin in the RAID over ether and check the LUN masking status? Using fstab to control partitions and LUN to suppress slices is the only "software" filtering I know of that can alter what you see assuming the hardware is working.
    Hope that helps,

  • Apple Raid Card in a Macpro production system running 10.4.11 Server

We just recieved the Raid card for our main Intel Octo Core server After installing the card we realized said card was not recognized by 10.4.11 due to lack of drivers the drivers as stated by documentation should be part of 10.4.10 OR shipped with the card (we checked package time and again and nothing was there , are we having fun yet ??) to which we updated a long time ago since this is one of our production 10.4.10 Server is no longer an available install disk at the Apple store apple retailers etc and 10.5 Server is misery to install on our system upgrade path not working as of this time as in kernel panic crash on reboot. Apple does not put the drivers online for this card . I am looking for a kind soul that would have received the disk that should have shipped with the card that would be able to put it online so i can download the installer and recognize the card in 10.4.11 right now i am backing up my system and data to our xraids.
    Current Setup is :
Raid Card in slot 1 fully charged battery (it has been way more than 72 hours).
    4x1TB HD in internal setup.
1 Quad Channel FC Apple Fibre Channel Card
tied to Fibrenetix Qbex 1 Xraid fully populated with 500 GB HDs.
Total data size is about 500 GB total not including video feed that take about 1 TB and are already backed up to a networked drive. Sites while light occupy about 20 Gbs and WGM is about 300 users rich domains are in the 50 FDQN range . Upgrading manually to 10.5 on a clean install while a possibility would be a MAJOR pain where the sun rarely shines. 10.5.2 does not exist as a DVD yet so i would hope to avoid updating as of yet . Any help would be more than welcome.
Thanking you for your time and attention and waiting to read from you soon ,
    Best Regards,

I have installed 10.4 server (from 10.4.7 UB DVD) on top of 10.4.10 (?) "user" on a 4 core MacPro (it came with the RAID-card installed (don't remember if it came with 10.4.10 "user" or earlier version).
You need to get at the "server.mpkg" install files from the 10.4.7 (10.4.8 or newer) server DVD and use that to install the server "bits".
After all upgrades the server now reports (In Server Admin overview):
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Build 8S2169)
Server Version: Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 (Build 8S2169)
But the "user" version system that came with the 4-core machine reports something like:
    Mac OS X 10.4.11 (Build 8S3169) (notice the 3 in 8S3xxx).
The driver for the RAID card is also on the user DVD but you need to do it like I did.
As I understand it this is an Apple supported way to do it.
This Server have been used a couple of months now.

If you bought an Apple gift card, then you cannot use it in the iTunes store.  You can only use it in the Apple store for hardware.
You would need an iTunes gift card to buy anything in iTunes

From the bottom of that article:

Why can't I use my apple gift card to subscrib to imatch?

You can't use iTunes gift cards to register into iTunes Match because it's a yearly suscription, so Apple needs the credit card to charge it in case you don't have enough money on gift cards

  • Why Can't I use an Apple Gift card to buy an ipad!?!

So, I received an apple gift card for graduation from college. It was $500 and I wanted to use to buy an iPad.
The person at the apple store said I was not allowed to use a gift card to pay for more than %50 of an iPad.
My question is...WHY? They got their money when someone purchased the gift card, what does it matter?
I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this issue, or knows why this is apple's policy. It just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

That is a very, very big assumption.
Apple could simply check the gift card and see if the purchase of that card was valid. They would have to Do that anyway to verify the amount on it anyway.
Not wanting to pony up the cash could be a sign of naughtiness.
I have a gift card and want to use it so that is a sign of naughtiness?
If i got a gift card and could not use it, I would be beyond ticked off! It' s valid or it isn't.
Nothing here -> says anything about a limitation as the op describes.
