Apple Firmware Restore

I've been looking at this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2213
I have a few macs, and a 2 year old Macbook Pro with annoying fans which never seem to stop. I've read that the firmware update which caused the change in the fans behaviour can be downgraded.
However the article above says:
This CD cannot be used to return an Intel-based Macintosh computer's firmware to a previous version if a successful update has already been performed.
So how can I get back to an older version of the firmware and make the Macbook more user friendly?
Also see here - http://www.macworld.com/article/140845/2009/05/mbpsmcfirmware.html
Any help would be appreciated.
Darren

OK, so I don't have one of the batteries listed. Well I do, the model number is right, but the serial is not. I bought a replacement battery late last year, which would explain that.
So I'm still thinking the firmware issue is worth looking at - I think if anyone tried using the MBP I have while the fans are going, they too would find it incredibly noisy and frustrating.
So I guess my ultimate question is - can I restore or downgrade the MPB to an older firmware version?

  • Drive On Mac Pro Won't Open For Firmware Restoration?

    Hi--
My Mac Pro (early 2008 model, OS 10.6.8) has recently begun having problems that seem firmware-related. When put in "Sleep" mode overnight, it wakes up on its own after about two hours of sleep and remains awake.  Also, from time to time it will display the prompt window ("Do You Want To Shut Down?") for a hard (button) shutdown---without the button having been pressed. Resetting the SMC and the PRAM solves the problem for awhile, but it's becoming necessary to do that more and more frequently---at first, the problem occured about every six months, then weekly, until now I'm getting the shutdown prompt and have to reset the SMC almost every day.
Internet searches of this and other forums have indicated that a possible solution is restoring the firmware.  I have made a Firmware Restoration CD but I cannot get the machine to recognize it. That is, when I press and hold the startup button I get the "three long-three short-three-long" beeps; according to Apple's FAQ on ths subject, the optical drive door should then open and allow me to insert the Firmware Restoration disk, but that doesn't happen--the computer just goes right on with the normal startup sequence.
    Please advise.

all I can do is tell you what I've learned here-try either one of these-hold down the shift key on startup/hold down the mouse on startup/if not,  See if you can boot up in single user mode/reset NVRAM,(command option, o+F)on reboot . Failing that....pull down the optical drive door, and using a straightened extra study paperclip, find the small hole near the optical drive tray. Stick that paperclip in and the tray should open up just enough for you to grab it and put the cd in there. Maybe then, start up holding down the C key......
    just a guess though
    Good luck to you

  • Firmware Restoration for "iMac 8,1" ?

    Hi all,
Does anyone know where to download the Firmware Restoration CD for the model "iMac 8,1"?
I can't see it on Apple's download site yet - maybe it hasn't been released? If this is the case, why and when?
    Cheers,
    Andy.

Dude, what? Thank you very much for trying to help, but I think you're just confusing the matter... your replies are somewhat contradictory:
    First you say:
+"You're supposed to use the software to make a copy of the current firmware so it can be restored if necessary."+
    But then:
+"There is no software for copying the firmware ROMs. Have you updated the firmware? If you have, then the restoration disk cannot help you since you have to make the copy of the firmware before you update it, unless the original firmware is contained on the restoration disc."+
So... what I read from this is: I'm supposed to make a copy, but there is no way to do so... correct?
The point of the Firmware Restoration discs is to get a non-functioning Mac up and running again. I've used the disc for iMac7,1 to successfully restore functionality to a Mac (an iMac7,1 obviously!) that was S.O.S beeping at startup.
Anyway... I just wondered why there are discs for most other models, but not for iMac8,1.
Thanks again Kappy for your replies - especially the links, they're very useful!

  • Firmware restoration cd installation failed

My Mbook Pro is version 1,1 and I was trying to make firmware restoration cd 1.3 starting as established by apple procedure but i wasn't able to make it start.
The problem is that my mb pro doesn't make 3 long blink 3 short and 3 long when holding power button so i can't make the cd start.
    What can i do?
When i hold the power button i only see rapid blink of sleep light then a long sound and after that the MB start with macosx.
    Please help me!
    Thank you very much!
    Cris

I have the same problem on a Mac mini (early 2006) with the firmware restoration 1.3! My mac mini will act just as your MBP with only quick blinks and a long tone before giving a startp chime and booting normally from HD.
    I m lost.....
Could anyone solve the problem or does have a clue?!

  • Problem with firmware restoration CD

I have a dead MacBook Pro (mid-2010 15" i5) that went through a failed firmware update. I found and burned the Firmware Restoration CD 1.7 that is needed to reset the firmware.
The problem I have is with the procedure itself as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL77
    7. Turn on the computer and continue holding the Power button. The sleep LED will blink rapidly, then slowly, then rapidly (3 quick blinks, 3 slow blinks, 3 quick blinks). On Macs that don't have a sleep LED, tones are used instead. Hold down the power button until you hear 3 long tones, then 3 short tones, then 3 long tones.
    8. Insert the Firmware Restoration CD while the lights are blinking or tones sounding, then release the Power button. A long tone is played once the recovery process has started.
The MBP does not have this behaviour with the sleep LED. I hold down the power button, the sleep LED flashes rapidly for about 1-2 seconds and the I hear the boot chime and the MBP tries to boot normally from the HD. If I try to insert the CD while the light is flashing, the MBP just spits it out.
What is the right procedure to restore the firmware with this particular MBP model? Thank you!

The MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2010 has a model identifier "MacBookPro 6,2" and isn't listed at the link you provided, it's the wrong firmware your using.
    Here's the correct version

Hello i have a problem with my MacBook Air they wiped out the operating system then installed windows 7 how do i re install the apple firmware please help

That is incorrect. You can install Windows on a Mac, any Mac, without having OS X installed on it.
To the OP you will need the original system reinstall USB thumb drive that came with your Mac Air if it is older than a Mid 2011 model or if it is newer than a Mid 2011 model you use the Online Internet recovery system.
If you don't have that original reinstall USB thumb drive you can order one from Apple for a small charge. Call Apple and ask to speak to someone Specifically to order a Replacement USB system reinstall thumb drive for your model year. You will need the serial number of that Air. It is etched into the bottom of the case.

  • I want Apple to restore IPA fonts natively to OSx-10.7 and 7

As I work in multiple languages as a professional singer, I would like to see Apple to restore and include natively IPA fonts as they did in an earlier OS.
I've tried to jerry-rig getting them on to my cpu but the experience altogether very windows-like. Furthermore, I couldn't find a keyboard layout that was complete. How can I put pressure or beg Apple to PLEASE.....DO IT?

Can you really not find them like everyone else does, using Edit > Special Characters?  If Phonetic Alphabet is not on the list at the left, click on the gear wheel at the top right and select Customize.
To input, select and double click or drag/drop.

  • MacBookPro4,1 Won't Boot OS X/Firmware Restoration CD?

I have a MacBookPro4,1 (2.5GHz). Because the LED was cracked, I removed the hard drive, installed it in a Mac Pro, installed OS X 10.7.5, and put the hard drive back into the MacBook Pro. The computer now powers on, the grey radian starts turning, but it never boots into OS X, not will it boot into the recovery partition. It will not boot from an OS X install disk or from it's own system install DVD. It will boot into Console/Single User Mode, it will boot the AHT from the install disk, and it will boot from the ASD EFI partition--but not the ASD OS partition. If the computer is started in Safe Boot, the grey progress bar one sees during firmware updates appears, progresses 25%, hangs, then disappears, and the computer doesn't boot. While it was booted into AHT and ASD EFI, all the diagnostic tests were run and all were passed.
Do I need to restore the firmware (although there appears to be no Firmware Restoration CD for this model). I would re-install the OS but I can't get it to boot from any OS X install media.

Clearly you have to get the MBP to boot from some device, and the internal HD isn't cooperating. Unfortunately neither is the DVD, which is disturbing and indicative of some unknown problem.
That leaves FireWire Target Disk Mode - can you connect it to your Mac Pro? I know from experience that another Mac started in Target Disk Mode will appear as a bootable device using Startup Manager, so try it.
I suspect that installing OS X on a HD installed on the Mac Pro, then removing it and installing it in the MBP may not be successful. If you connect the two, then boot FireWire Target Disk Mode, you should be able to download and install OS X specifying the MPB as its target system.
Try resetting the NVRAM. It contains startup disk information so corruption may have unknown effects.
I can't find a firmware restoration CD for that model either. You may need to see a Genius.

  • MacBook 4,1 Firmware Restoration.

Here is my problem. I recently had gotten my MacBook Repaired at a certified service store. After having it repaired, my battery stopped working. Now, It didn't stop completely; The computer itself cannot recognize that there is a battery installed, but if the power cord is knocked out the computer will continue to run as if it is on battery (screen dims... ect.) Now this wouldn't be a problem is the computer would still charge the battery. Since it doesn't recognize there is a battery inside, It doesn't charge it. Once the battery is drained, It's gone for good. Ive researched problems with the computer and called Applecare. They told me to reset the Pram and SMC with no fix. I see the computer has the latest SMC update installed and I am thinking I will need to use a Firmware Restoration CD to get things back in order. My problem is there doesn't seem to be one made for my specific computer. Why all of a sudden would they just skip a generation of MacBook and leave it high and dry to suffer problems like this? Does anyone know of If they even made a Firmware Restoration CD for this model?
    Thanks in advance!

I really wish this got answered.  It's my exact issue.
