Apple folks: please read this for AppleTV power management!

I got my AppleTV two days ago and I really enjoy it, but the fact it doesn't have a real "turning off" or "auto-turning off" or "auto-sleeping" feature when not used for a while , it's a real shame. With all the environmental problems we have and need to save energy, how that can be possible? All my Macs turn off by themselves when I don't use them for a while (i.e. Energy Panel).
Apple are you listening here? Could you please put an update to allow AppleTV to go in sleep mode automatically after 10-20 minutes of not use?

I see the merit of your point... however... the hard disks spin down whenever it's not in use... and there is a standby feature but it's up to the user to decide if they want it to be used or not...
45W vs 11W when idling around... that's a 75% improvement... 11W is leaving one of those new fangle ugly as sin lightbulbs running all the time...
all in all... 11W... is pretty darn spectacular.
i do think we need to do all we can to limit our waste... but there's a balance, too. I doubt we're baking the earth to death at 11W per user... maybe there are bigger fish to fry... whoops... bad analogy... in our effort to save the planet from ourselves.
maybe a project that teaches cows how to convert their own methane ***** into something less pollutive? there are probably more cows with greater gas output than appletv users at 11W.
But if you feel that passionately... go for it. You can save 11W and I'll eat beef to reduce the population of cattle.

    As you can see, practically every iPod shuffle has had problems with the 1.1.4 update that comes with iTunes 7.0.1
    The problem is that it starts blinking amber/green, won´t play any song nor would be recognized by the computer, becomes useless.

    If you have an Apple Store nearby, go. After a 2 hour drive to my "Local" Apple store, the 'Genius' plugged it in, confirmed the dead-ness and handed me a new one.
    Out of the 15 or so people waiting with me, two had Mac Books for service, one had a desktop, and all of others had dead iPods. Those dead iPods were NOT all Shuffles, either. There were all types of iPods. No attempts were made to "Fix" any of them, they were ALL just replaced with new.

    First let me state that I made posts awhile back about my Ipod touch not being able to be recognized by itunes at all and just as a camera by windows. Now every single guide did nothing to help and the FEW people that posted had posted things I already did that did not help.
    HOWEVER the version of Itunes that was prior to the one I just downloaded connected PERFECTLY with no issues.
    But I just updates and wouldnt you know it, the connection problem is BACK. Apple please read this, the last version of Itunes had something different with how it connected to the Ipod...PLEASE bring that back, its so inconvenient not being able to connect to my own Ipod
    If someone wants to post a reply that might help feel free...but everything on this website and even a few others not posted here have not worked, this is mostly me praying that Apple reads it...that tiny difference on how it connected made a huge difference with my computer.

    Thanks. I worked out a simpler method of turning off the internet access - just switching off my wireless modem. Either way, this works and with the PC not connected to the internet, all three Apple devies will sync.
    Thinking about it now, I had a similar problem a few versions ago which I recognised because with Home Sharing on and connected to the internet iTunes was trying to find files from someone in another hotel room who also sharing the hotel's wireless network. My devices would not sync then either. This seemed to be resolved with subsequent itunes upgrades until now ....
    Thanks for the advice. Let's hope Apple's next 'update' actually updates itunes so it can sync Apple devices whilst simultaneously connected to the internet (not a big ask really).

    Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Also, what mouse and keyboard are you using...? If they are wireless, go to Apple > System Preferences > Bluetooth > click Advanced > click Allow Bluetooth Devices to wake this computer.

  • Feature request for Lenovo Power Manager

    I typically like to keep my battery charge level at 40-50% in order to optimize the battery's life span.  But, there are times when I need to charge fully and I may change this setting a few times a week.
    Instead of having to wait for the Power Manager to open and dig around for the Battery Maintenance settings, could we have "Battery Charge Levels Min/Max" as part of the Power Plan options?  That way, we can quickly toggle between configurations using FN+F3.

    You mean Power MAnager needs quite some time to come up. Not only on boot, but also when trying to do something. Everything seems really slow: You click something and it needs 2-3 seconds to actually happen. Ad yes, bootup time is really worse with newest version of power manager. The battery status icon appears last on bootup and system is not really usable unitl then.
    This app is completely bloated :-(.The features it provides neither really need so much cpu cycles nor that much RAM/resources and there is plenty of room for improvements. Same for Access Connections btw.! You press FN+F5 or F7 and for a few seconds nothing happens. This is really bad for a simple menu to pop up.

  • How Iphone theft can be stopped (Apple please read this)

    Its good to hear all the time that apple has come up with an anti theft feature which has reduced theft of this lovely device by so much of percentage, but its still happening. Lets understand, if your iphone is stolen you put it on the lost mode and keep waiting for it to appear on Find my iphone. We are quiet confident that nobody other than us can erase this device (because of icloud password), which is by far true, but what if the stolen phone is dismantled and its parts are sold separately.
    Therefore, what I want to propose to apple is that every hardware in iphone should have a unique no. which is read by the operating system everytime its restarted and if any part is replaced from one phone to another then iOS should ask for the unique no. which should be entered only once at the time of replacement and this unique no. for each part should come as a part of operating manual in the iphone box. I am sure theft will be over by almost 99%.
    I lost my brand new iphone 5s within 24 days of purchase which hits me inside like anything and I really feel that when you buy such an expensive phone then there should be something done for its security.
    Hope apple will surely consider the same and bring something on this ground soon.

    There is already an anti theft device on the iPhone called Activation Lock which is very practical and seems to be working well, if recent press reports are to be believed. What you are suggesting is way beyond the scope of reality and would not deter thefts. I'm sure that a very low number of iPhones are sold for their parts. It probably is a measure of last resort on the part of thieves.
    Security for your phone is ultimately up to you and not the manufacturer. You have been given the tools to help. Whatever happens to your phone  in the end is your responsibility and no one else's.
    If you still want to tell Apple, tell them yourself, as no one on this forum works for Apple and Apple does not monitor this forum.

    There is no reason that the www.viewmessage.com url doesn't include the message id and password which would make my life and everyone else's way easier. Please just make the "Viewmymessage" template to something like www.viewmymessage.com/?MSGID=q21xddmfs&Pass=asdwsdf3 -- Even if it just fills the form fields on the viewmymessage.com site. ANYTHING would be better then trying to remember the most cryptic message id and password ever!

    I'm a musician who frequently uses the Audio creation mode because this is the environment most optimal for creating music. For some time now, I've facing a certain problem where today, I finally found the solution about.
    my problem
    The problem I was having, is that some applications (they're optimised for stereo) played sound on my center speaker differently than those who use the windows 7 drivers. What happened in a nutshell, is that when I play sound in flash, the center speaker volume is about 3 times as loud as all the other speakers. Although this gives a nice and clear sound for presentations, this can be a pain when you want to listen to music.
    my setup
    For me, this is a bit awkward, because I have a big room where my speakers are positioned for my TV. My computer is next to my tv, but my center speaker is not in front of my pc monitor, but rather in front of my tv. Due to this, the right ear gets way more sound than my left one. Strangely enough, it weren't all the applications that had trouble with this. My music player plays everything equally throughout my speakers.
    the mixer
    The creative mixer (startup console) has several ways of tweaking this. Like assigning what channels to play if sound gets played through L/R, and their individual volume bars. You can guess it maybe. Changing these settings affected both applications differently. I could use the sliders to fix one, and then mess up the other. So when I went through all my settings I couldn't find what causes this.
    CMSS is the fault here
    I went reading this forum, and came to this post: http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/How-to-enable-sound-for-my-center-rear-and-side-speakers-using/td-p/52 What gives, this option is not available when you are in Audiocreation mode. So it shouldn't affect my sound right? WRONG!
    the problem
    Even though you can't tweak the settings during audio creation mode, the settings are still in affect. So you have to switch to entertainment mode to access the CMSS-3D. I went there, and I had stereo enhancing surround enabled. When I changed that, it solved my problem. Since during audio creation, I mainly use stereo applications, I do not need surround enhancement.
    my setup now
    I turned it off, and as suspected, windows only parses sound to the left and right, not the other channels, even in audio creation mode. In the mixer, I have enabled output to all 7 channels I have for L/R output, and now the sound gets balanced to all my speakers. True, I get stereo sound over all the speakers, but when I want to use surround, I switch to the entertainment mode anyway.
    Could a mod sticky this? I think its worth to have this stickied.

    So my touchpad wasn't working and I have an HP dv6-6135dx. It started being messed up shortly after I took my PC apart to upgrade the screen. Sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it was completely unresponsive, sometimes the ring around the touchpad was lit, other times it wasn't etc.... It got worse and worse to the point where the touch pad almost never worked.
    I followed this guide, and it didn't fix the problem; however, this got me thinking, and I pulled the keyboard out and reseated the touchpad cable where it connects right under there. BAM works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for this post, for some reason I didn't think to reseat the cable... I must have not plugged it back in completely when I took my laptop apart.     General
    Where do I get the latest software, drivers and firmware?
    Click the link Support > Downloads on this page.
    In general, when installing on a new PC you need to download the driver, and some software to communicate with the player e.g. MediaSource, Media Explorer. For players using the v2.xx MTP/PlayForsure firmware drivers are not necessary, but you must have Windows XP and Windows Media Player 0 (this provides the MTP driver).
    Important: Even though files are described as updates, none of the software requires a previous version to install. At worst they will prompt you to connect your player to verify you own a Creative product.
    Note if you are downloading MediaSource make sure to download and install the relevant MediaSource plugin for your player. If MediaSource can't detect your player this is the first thing to check. For the v.xx PDE firmware the plugin is called the Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin for Creative MediaSource , and for the v2 MTP/PlayForSure firmware it's called Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices .

    If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
    What bit-rate should I encode my music at?
    Ultimately it's down to your ears what bit-rate you prefer, and you should listen for yourself to determine it. If you ask on the forum you'll get many different opinions.

    How long should my battery last?
    For the Zen and Nomad Jukebox players, to get some idea of how long your battery will last for a given bit-rate look at the battery curves thread. Ultimately battery life is dependent on how you use the player, make sure to follow the "why doesn't my battery last as long as expected?" link below.
    How long does an RMA take?
    Typically 2 weeks. But it might take a little longer, so don't start posting if it's 5 days.

    Where can I buy online music or get legal downloads for my player?

    My tracks don't play at the correct speed e.g. they play too slowly, why?
    Chances are they are encoded in an unsupported sampling frequency. The tracks will need to be re-encoded at a supported bit-rate and/or frequency with something like Creative's MediaSource Audio Converter or dbPowerAmp.
    Can a Creative player work on an Apple Mac?
    It isn't officially supported, but some kind folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working with Macs. XNJB provides support for the Zen players, and requires OS X 0.3 or 0.4 (check the site for full details). MuVoHelper solves some problems with getting the MuVo to work optimally. The iTunes Zen plugin should support all Zen players. Note if the link to the plugin is broken just Google "iTunes Zen plugin" to find other sources. Also note there's no guarantee that these programs will work with the Mac, so if you have issues you should address your problems to the developer(s) of the relevant program.
    Can a Creative player work on Linux?
    Again it isn't officially supported, but again some kinds folks out there have written freeware applications to get your Creative player working. There's the Gnomad2 project. And don't forget the Linux forum at Nomadness.net if you are still having problems.
    Tag Based Players
    This section covers the players that use a hard disk and work using tags e.g. Zen Xtra, Touch, Micro, Sleek.
    My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?
    If the Zen is not starting properly or not behaving correctly, first try to reset it. To reset all players except for the Zen Micro there is a small switch on the side of the player typically, that you should press using something like a bent paper clip. Don't use anything sharp. To reset the Zen Micro simply remove the battery and replace it.
    If this doesn't work then access rescue mode, and try running a disk cleanup.
    Next you should try reloading the firmware/OS, but beware if you are having connection problems also with your PC you may end up with a player that has no firmware and cannot be reloaded.
    The last resort is to format the player. This will erase the contents from the player, including the content that ships with the player.
    If none of these resolve the problem and you are under warranty you should get in contact with support to arrange replacement of the player.
    If you aren't under warranty Creative will still repair the player, which you can arrange by contacting support.
    How do I do a Disk Cleanup and/or access Rescue/Recovery Mode?
    Refer to the sticky Rescue Mode thread. Disk Cleanup is accessed from this. Note that the MuVo players (with the exclusion of the MuVo? players) do not have Rescue Mode.
    How long should a Disk Cleanup take?
    It should only take a few minutes, and no longer than 30 minutes. Anything longer than this and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
    How long should a format take?
    Only a few seconds. Anything more than a minute and there is a problem with the player and you need to contact Creative Support.
    Although I can get into Rescue Mode, I can't select any option, or the options don't work?
    If Rescue Mode is not working properly or commands can't be chosen the player is faulty. You need to contact Creative Support.
    When are the Zen 20Gb/Neeon going to be released outside of the Asia Pacific region?
    Due to popular request the Neeon is launched in the USA, but nowhere else for now. If you want the Neeon then contact your regions Customer Services to request it.
    The Zen 20Gb is available from some shops in the USA and Europe e.g. Cambridge Soundworks, and Amazon.co.uk.
    Is there a known issue with the Zen Micro headphone socket?
    Creative Support have neither confirmed nor denied it officially. Some users have posted purported emails from Creative on the forum saying that the socket has been reinforced, but these have not been confirmed by Creative Support either. The exact incidence of the problem is unknown, but newer players seem to suffer less from it.
    Should I buy the Zen Micro or Touch etc. and what colour should it be?
    We can't tell you what player to get, or what colour it should be. Look at your collection size and the features of the player (see Nomadworld.com for the product pages) and decide yourself based on this.
    Why does my Zen Micro battery drain so quickly?
    The standby time (24 hours from turn-off) for the Zen Micro seems to use a lot more power than previous Zens. Creative have released both v (..0+) and v2 (2.20.05+) firmware that reduces the standby time to 4 hours. Make sure to update to one of these if you have a draining problem.

  • I still cannot stream YouTube/Netflix/iPlayer etc. on my iPhone 4 via WiFi since updating to iOS 6.0.1....can anyone please solve this for me??

    I posted a couple of days ago about a problem my iPhone 4 was having trying to stream video via WiFi
    Basically, since I upgraded to iOS 6.0.1 I cannot stream YouTube videos via the app or via Safari, Netflix will not work nor will services such as BBC iPlayer.
    I've also discovered this evening I cannot stream any radio apps either.
    All of them will play for 10-30 seconds then stop buffering making them impossible to play.
    I was given several pieces of advice including restoring the phone to factory settings, restoring it as a new phone, hard resetting twice in a row, deleting all the cache/data in Safari but nothing that has been suggessted has solved the problem.
    I know it is not a problem with my internet/WiFi as I have a laptop and a PC both using it and streaming YouTube/raddio stations etc. with no problem. Also, my girlfriend has a 3GS with the old YouTube player and that works with no problems at all.
    Can anyone please help me out as it's getting a bit frustrating not being able to use the streaming function on my iPhone.
    One thing that is odd, I have no problem surfing the web on the phone via WiFi or streaming over 3G. It is only a problem when trying to stream video/audio over WiFi.

    For the love of God, it's impossible to find a direct feedback link on the site for iTunes, so I'm posting it here in prayer of a dev actually reading it.
    /end mini-rant
    I would like to have iTunes show me a column that simply displays a "Yes" or a "No" in it on each song's line, telling me whether the song has lyrics embeded in it ("Yes") or not ("No"). The reason for this is that I like to add lyrics to my songs before I put them on my iPod so I can view them on the iPod later, and with thousands of songs it gets confusing very quickly which one's I have already added lyrics to, or not, and need to.
    The same request goes for album artwork. Both of them obviously would be toggle'able in the View Options along with all of the other columns.
    As an addition to the above, I'd love to see a viewer pane, much like the album artwork one, that displays the lyrics embedded in a song as it plays.
    My last small request is to add Mozilla Thunderbird to the list email contacts that it can import. I believe Thunderbird is now mainstream enough that it would be useful. There is currently an extension for TB that will do this, but it would be nice to not have to add extra software to my computer and have it built right into iTunes itself.
    If these get added you'll automatically have my undying gratitude.
    Huge bonus points if you devise a way to auto-import the correct lyrics and artwork for each and every song in the library with the click of a button within iTunes. It's a monumental task to manually do this with a 30gb full iPod.

    "Widespread Horror" is a poor characterization for any of the transient problems with the iPod or iTunes (with the possible exception of the 'less than adequate' information provided about the initial iPod batteries). Even iTunes 5.0 wasn't that bad from a percentage basis, but it did spike the posts seen here for quite a while.
    The iTunes and iPod programs work fantastically well on the vast majority of Windows and Apple PCs. There are over 25 million unique installations of iTunes out there and somewhat close to 45 million iPods sold to-date. Some will have problems. This is where people go to get them fixed. In the grand scheme of things, it is an extremely small percentage of users that have real problems. The ‘Law of Large Numbers’ dictates that there will, in appearance, be many people with problems. Even 1% of 25 million is 250,000 problems. If only 10% of those folks came here, we would be swamped. It’s not happening.
    That said, even one glitch, when it happens to you, can be maddening...
    As for why one cannot directly reach the iPod/iTunes/Apple support folks easily, consider this. A fully loaded support service will run a company at least $75/hour per employee assigned to answer phones. There's a lower limit startup/run cost, so 1 or 2 staff is not on that lower level of expense.
    If you spend any time on these boards, you'll see that the majority of the problem are self-inflicted in some manner or another: Malware, viruses, poor PC upkeep, failure to read &/or understand the directions, and the like.
    Apple could provide a support line for all the users, but the costs would be passed back to everyone (regardless of whether they ever used the service) in the form of higher music download prices, higher iPod prices and maybe even a charge for 'buying' iTunes.
    The vast majority of users do not need these services and probably do not want to pay for the small percentage of users who do. I know I do not.
    And Katrina is correct. If we see a definitive and reproducible problem with iTunes/iPod, we can directly alert the Hosts who can inform the tech support team. This has happened, but not to the extent that some of the posters would 'expect', all for the reasons I touched on above.

    like we did before! I'm an educator and my students access the pictures folders for many projects (including PowerPoint, etc.). The way the photo library is locked down now is a hassle and "just one more step" for the kids to pull a picture to the desktop. I'm sorry if people corrupted their libraries (my 5th graders never did) - please don't lock the rest of us out. I don't want my kids' machines to be updated to iLife 08 if this is the way photos will be accessible.
    (Sorry - I know there is a way to send a message to Apple, but can't remember how!)

    Have your students open the the iPhoto library package like this:
    Then make an alias of the Originals and/or Modified folders and put them on the Desktop or in their home folder.
    You've got to remember that today's 5th graders are smarter than the general population.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it.
