Apple freeze

Help help
My G5 is one year 2 months old and it started giving me problem lately.
First, it started freezing when I'm working on it. Initially I dismissed it but it got more frequent. I did not install any new program for the past 4 months. I did a re-installation of the OS and since then, the Safari is unable to work. I tried to re-re-install the OS but the freezing frequency got worst, making it impossible to re-re-install.
Each time it freezes, the fan will make very loud noise and there are times when I can't even turn it on.
I didn't buy apple care as it was working great at the one year mark.... regret
Any advice?
Thanks

Just had the first seriously hard freeze I think I've ever experienced in 5 years of using OS X... not talking just the spinning beachball, but a completely unresponsive, literally frozen screen. Hard reset the only recourse.
I'm a little freaked out.
Running a Single 1.8 G5, OS 10.3.9. It is as updated as 10.3.9 gets. I was using Adobe CS at the time, but not doing anything particularly taxing. The fans were not roaring when the crash happened.
I restarted in safe mode, ran permissions repair, took a look at the log and saw this:

Now I've been having an odd problem recently where one or the other of my USB ports spontaneously ceases to recognize the peripheral plugged into it. Restart solves it. OS is otherwise unaffected. But from what I see in the log, it looks like maybe this USB issue has become systemic. Can anybody corroborate this theory, or suggest a course of action?
Much thanks.

  • When I go to some web sites, my apple freezes for several seconds and then responds

I try to go to certain sites and my mac freezes and then responds.  This is happening more frequently.

I've experienced this too, it always seems to be caused by flash content. Mine happens intermitently so haven't really found a solution. Are all your plug-ins up-to-date? And are you running any sort of ad-blocker?

  • Betrayed by Apple.  Email frozen until I pay more for storage.

Why in this gods green earth would Apple freeze my .mac email that I have had since the beginning, because an artificial 5gb limit was put onto my account? Why not just freeze the data rather than bouncing back my biggest clients emails!!!

Why would you use a free complimentary email system for business emails?  Why not get a hosting service and your own domain so your business address is protected and not subject to change beyond your control?  The limitations of iCloud are clearly spelled out:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4863
If you need more space, you need to buy it.  Not unlike most personal email systems, even for fee ones through hosting accounts which still impose hard limits on mailbox size.
And weren't the notices about the end of the complimentary extra storage for mobileme users sent out months ago?  You should have received an email long ago telling you your extra storage would be gone come September 30.

  • Keyboard/Mousepad Freezes

My keyboard/mousepad freezes from time to time. I can restart via power button or simply close the lid. When I reopen the lid the optical drive makes a noise and the mac acts as if nothing ever happened and my data is OK. I don't know why the lid switch still works as a kind of "sleep" button but it does. The power button also works but you can't make any subsequent choices using the keyboard or mouse pad after the freeze. Hardware issue?

Same problem here! When I close the lid and open it up again, the keyboard and touchpad do work again. But only as long as I use them frequently. When I let keyboard and touchpad alone for a while (one minute or so) both are frozen again.
When this bug is there, I can repeat the sleep and awake method with the same result again and again. Nothing in the logs.
When touchpad and keyboard are frozen, I can still use the bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
Only a restart (reboot) will help me out.
I think it was not there before 10.5.5.
I have no idea what causes the problem.
I'm using VMware Fusion. Perhaps this might be a problem when running it was a WinXP VM. (when running debian in a VM it seems to be stable).
This is AGAIN a big bug from Apple software (this seems to be no hardware bug).
I also suffer LED backlid bug (stripes from time to time).
I also suffer NVidia Softwarebug. (Graphic intense apps lead to crash. Especially when running with extern display on DVI).
Seriously disappointed now! (My old G4 powerbook was more stable).
Apple has tons of dollars at the bank. I suggest to spend some money into keeping quality high! Since the iPhone is out, so many feel it's going the wrong way with computers (let alone the missing option for mate displays).
Thanks Apple for listening and fixen these big problems.
(Steve, do a quick research for Apple freezing keyboards and touchpads - it's huge...)

  • Security flaw update - how do you know if your iPad and iMac are compromised/hacked?

Can anyone explain how one might know if their iPad or iMac running Mountain Lion has been Hacked.
I always use my wifi at home which is locked.
    On my iPad,
messages popped up two days ago that the password for my apple    me.com account was wrong. When I tried to rectify that, I ended up with Apple freezing the account.  I checked the software and it says it is up to date.
    On my iMac
On Friday and Saturday, messages intermittently popped up about certificates for one of my email accounts on their outbound server (GoDaddy but not Time Warner). On Saturday, I installed the latest update, but I am still getting the certificate message for the GoDaddy email,
Does this mean I was already hacked?
Is there anything else I should do?
    Thank you.

Sounds like your Apple ID may have been hacked. If it gets hacked, it's entirely possible for the hacker to take control away from you entirely, by changing the password, recovery e-mail and security questions, or even enabling two-factor authentication. If they have done the latter, you'll never see your Apple ID again, as Apple absolutely will not assist in recovering an account that has had two-factor authentication enabled.
Since you're unable to log in at this point, you'll need to contact Apple. However, keep in mind that they may not be able to help you. There's very little proof that you own an Apple ID other than the information that the hacker could have changed by now. Still, Apple is the only one who can help with this.
Regarding the GoDaddy e-mail certificate, that's harder to say anything about. You'll probably want to contact GoDaddy support about that one. It's likely to be an issue on their end - perhaps an expired certificate, or a certificate that was compromised and has now been revoked, or a simple configuration issue.
None of this is likely to be related to malware.

  • I give up with iTunes

I have had every iPhone since the first,  I have also had every iPad, I also have a 27' iMac so I am far from a newbie,  but the current version of iTunes is nothing more than frustrating and i am at a loss.
I am posting this to the Windows one,  as the issues are across both Mac and Windows,
ITunes used to be a great experience and one of the best apps I had ever used and designed very well.  The current versions have now become the buggiest and the possibly the worst app I have ever used.
hopefully someone here has seen these issues,  and ether there is not fix as the program is just buggy or there may be a fix.
    1.     New iPhone5 for the Wife.  Fully backed up her iPhone4 and then restored on that to her new iPhone5.  I cannot set it up as new because her game high scores are important to her and Apple provide no way to save scores to any app.    The restore went ok,  except every app she had ever used and deleted was installed back on to the iPhone5 and all folders were either gone or had 1 app in them and the rest scattered every where.
    2. restoring a IPhone4 backup to her old iPhone4 to give to my son as he had broken his,  resulted in a similar experience,  except his restore restored all his stuff fine,  but also put all of my Wife stuff on it too now completely mixed up.
    3.  Went to remove a watched movie from the iPad Mini to make room for more.   ITunes said it was done,  and showed the new extra space.   Only to find the move is still there on the iPad,  and any attempt to put a new movie on results in a not enough room error.     Then tried to remove all movies,  ITunes showed it to be done,  and 25G free.  Only to find all movies still there and same again.  Nothing I try will make it sync properly.
So I moved the entire library to another PC and also to my 27" iMac,  both with new installations of iTunes.  Both gave very similar problems with each device,  not 100% the same issues but very close.
Basically I have now found iTunes to be incapable of the job its designed for,  and I am at a total loss as to what to try next.
As a software engineer for a international company,   I am requesting Apple freeze the source code of iTunes 11 and create a 'Stable" release as we do.  No new features are placed in this build and its an optional build for our users.  Stable builds only get bug fixes and concentrate 100% on the programs basic use.  Findings and fixes in the stable then go to make the daily version more stable,  and eventually create a new stable version.
Please get back to what you used to do well because iTunes really lets the brand down and its such a shame.
    Very disappointed user.
    Nic W

I am not a single user, or even a single device.  I have 2 Macs, 2 iPads and an iPod and Apple TV and my Galaxy Note 3, My sons both have iPhones, we share one iTunes account with 3 Apple IDs.  We have no problem using home sharing and syncing  music, email, calendar, documents, photos etc, back and forth between all the devices.
Your refusal to use the cloud, (which is as fast as your wifi can process it), baffles me.  You don't PAY for it.  You have 5 GB of free storage for each Apple ID and iCloud account.  You don't have to backup to iCloud, but should be syncing with it.   It would keep your contact list current on all devices without the redundancies.  Also calendar, etc.   The cloud is not just wireless backup, it is also wireless syncing of information.     It does not store your music, movies and other iTunes purchases.
"iTunes rarely knows what it has synced which can be demonstrated on virtually any device,"
iTunes seems to get everything right on ours.  I have no music set to sync to my business iPad, but I do have video clips and photos.  They sync just fine to the devices without any "cross contamination" or blended content.
"Personally I think its a simple case of too many upgrades and features without maintaining a stable code base,  it certainly seems that way, unless I hear or find something else causing this"
Again.  I don't have any problem.  Our oldest device is an iPad 2, it handled all the updates fine and still works great.
"I now have my Wifes new iPhone5 close to what it was on her 4,  but its not exact and it should have been as simple as backing it up and restoring it to a new device,  but alas that simply does NOT work."
Well, no.  To get the new phone running with her old content, you should have backed up the old (deleting all but the one recent backup from your computer).  Then set up the new phone as - new, with the backup from her previous phone.
"Likewise transfer all new purchased then try sync it will invariably tell you not all purchases have been copied and asks to continue warning you will need to purchase again."
This is another issue which should be resolved by iOS 8.   Any content, even FREE, if purchased with one Apple ID is forever tied to that Apple ID.  This can be a hassle because a computer can only download past purchases from One Apple ID in 90 day period.   This is where home sharing comes in handy.  Since you have 2 computer, it would be ideal.  We handle it by making any purchases directly on the computer, so we can share.  iOS 8 is adding a "family share" feature to fix this issue.
As for full clean out - It's always a good idea every now and then (Isn't that why we delete cookies at the end of a session?)  Just like a computer, residual crud stays on our devices and a full delete or format purges it.

  • Startup issues. Alredy tried fixes from other posts

*Problem started with an un-forcequitable freeze in the finder.
*After restart, screen hung on gray apple screen then fans revved.
*Forced to boot on OSX 10.4 install disk.
*Disk Utility verified the main os drive, then hung up verifying the volume.
*Booted on apple hardware test. The comprehensive test revealed no problems.
*Option button on restart reveals os intall disk, main os drive, and techtool edrive.
*Startup on all of these results in the same gray apple freeze and subsequent fan revving.
*Already tried the little button next to the ram, holding down power button untill hearing that special tone, and unplugging every thing for five minutes before restarting.
Sooooo.......Is there anything else I can try before I have to bring it in some where????
    -Desperate, and Confused

Use SuperDuper and keep more backups.
Run Alsoft Disk Warrior regularly, and always before doing any updates, patches, or installing something new.
Those two will go a long way. There are also some other utilities that can help, Leopard(Tiger) Cache Cleaner and MicroMat TechTool Pro 5, are two more.
And make sure you have two extra boot drives, a backup of your working set, perhaps from before last update even, an "emergency" boot drive that is lean and has only minimum and used just for running repairs and such, nothing else.

  • Optus Wireless Broadband USB

I purchased an Optus Wireless Broadband USB the other day, I have installed the Optus program; however, whenever I am connected to the internet, 5 mins later, my apple freezes and tells me to 'restart by holding down the start button', this has happened over 30 times.
Does anyone know of any programs or methods to fix this problem. Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you

Is this USB device Mac compatible? If so, have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers?

  • HT201177 I get a chime and white screen, but after a few minutes the screen goes black. Help!

I came out to a black computer screen. I can see the mouse arrow but otherwise nothing. I disconnected the computer and tried turning it back on. It starts up like usual but bar going across under the apple freezes and the screen goes black. I can hear the computer running. Help!

That's just the iPod's backlight timer going off, signaling the iPod's backlight to turn off to conserve battery power.

  • My iPod keeps showing the apple logo + a blank screen and the lock screen keeps freezing when trying to unlock it.

Last night I turned my iPod touch 4g off randomly and then when I went to turn it back on and went to unlock the screen it froze up right there and will not unlock to the home screen to where all my apps and all that are. Ever since that happened the iPod keeps showing the apple logo repeatedly, as well as a screen being completely blank when still turned on. Also when i plug in the iPod to the computer it recognizes it for a second but the iPod does nothing and shuts off and repeats in showing the apple logo and blank black screen. I can get it to the home screen where the slide to lock button is but every time i even attempt to slide it, it freezes up and doesn't do it.
I also having been trying to restore it by plugging in the cord and pressing the home button to get the screen with the usb cord to pop up but no matter what i do, it will not let me turn the iPod off period because every time i keep trying to do that it just shows the apple logo and all of what i said up above again. I have also seen it get a white screen to show a few times , which i assume means the white screen of death. I have never seen that screen before this happened.
I know this is not making any sense whatsoever but this is very hard to put into words in explaining. I have searched the internet but i can't find a single problem that sounds like this one in solving to fix it. The iPod is on right now as i'm typing this. I haven't attemtped to push the buttons down again to fix as i would assume maybe to just leave it alone as i sleep through the night in hopes of it maybe working or even dying. I've only had this iPod for 4 months now and i just don't understand why it won't let me turn it off completely or work properly for me to restore it.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Programs keep not responding, computer freezes often, apple mail won't open

Starting yesterday my computer has been running very slowly. it takes almost 15 minutes to start up and then programs won't open or will quit unexpectedly or not respond. Not to mention that my computer freezes every 30 seconds or so. I have 4gb of crucial ram that system diagnostics say is ok. i don't know what is wrong.

Have you tried opening Mail from the Applications folder. The Dock alias may be corrupt.
    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.
