Apple genius help

Has anyone had the "genius'| at an Apple store give them wrong info?? I had an old model Iphone 3G that was working fine until the other day the screen turned completely black and no matter what button I tried to push it just stayed black. If a call came in I could answer but I couldn't call out b/c I couldn't see the keypad or anything else for that matter. I took it to the Apple Store at Roosevelt Field mall where the so called genius gave me this diagnosis-"the connection to the part that allows for video is no good, it can not be fixed, unfortunately you would have to buy a new one." I asked him if there was any way at all to fix it and he said he was sorry but there was not-he had taken it to the back and opened it up to check-or so he told me. I am not up for an upgrade or I would have just bought a new one but no way I would buy one at the full price. I was telling an acquaintance about this and told him I would have to just throw it out and get any cheap phone for now until my contract was up and then get a new one. He asked for it so I said fine, the thing is a piece of junk, you can have it. He asked if the genius had tried setting it to factory settings and I told him no, the genius said that wouldn't work because it was a connection inside the phone. Well, we plugged it into Itunes and turned it back to factory settings and it immediately worked. Now I had already given it away but because it worked I am still using it until I buy a new one but since I had already promised it to someone I have to give it up in a few days-thanks genius'!

I would get the genius' personal info, such as Store and his name and call Apple Care. Do not speak to the first line agent other than to ask to have the call transferred to Apple Customer Relations. When the CR agent is on the line, explain exactly what occurred at the Apple Store, explain that this was a major inconvenience that has resulted in some personal problems with a friend as well as had you convinced that your iPhone was useless and that you would need to purchase a new one at full price since you were not yet up for an upgrade with your carrier.
Remain calm and polite but insist that you want to instigate an internal investigation against this employee by human relations.
Trust me, this will very likely be worth your time.
As for the person to whom you promised this phone, a true friend would understand that you made the commitment when you had false information regarding the phone and not hold you to the promise made under false pretenses.
