Apple genius not helpful, maybe posters will answer my questions

I recently went to my local Apple Store to talk to a 'Genius' about my 80gb ipod classic that will not sync more than 200 songs before freezing. My 'Genius' asked if I had a Mac or PC at home and I said PC and without missing a beat he smugly suggested that my PC might have a 'bad driver' that corrupted either the software or hard drive of my ipod. He promptly told me that I can either buy an refurbished ipod of the same model for a discounted price or buy another, newer model with 10% off with the trade-in of my corrupted ipod then sent me off angry that I just wasted almost an hour waiting after my appointment time.
My question is in three parts. If you only want to answer one that is fine.
A.) If it was a bad driver that caused the corruption on the ipod, how can I avoid this issue in the future if I chose to purchase another Apple brand Mp3 player? Just by keeping up with driver updates and avoiding sites that might contain malware?
B.) The ipod started acting up on my last pc, which I dropped on a brick floor pretty hard and went on questionable sites on. But I've since gotten a newer model laptop pc with tons of space and the ipod is still acting the same way. There is no corrupted warning when I plug it in, it just will not sync all of my library and after syncing a couple gigs the screen changes from the 'syncing' screen to the 'connected' screen and itunes freezes. Then I cannot eject the ipod through itunes or even through the windows 'safely remove' feature. This is on the new laptop. What does this mean??! Corrupted software or hard drive??
C.) Has anyone had a positive experience with an Apple genius? My experience was very horrible and the genius was a jerk. Is this common?

From your description my first concern would be for the health of the iPod's hard drive. <hr>
*iPod Diagnostics*
Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
Retracts: 889
Reallocs: 12
Pending Sectors: 0
PowerOn Hours: 2202
Start/Stops: 894
Temp: Current 24c
Temp: Min 10c
Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
*Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
*Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

Turning back to your post:
A.) While an incorrect driver/driver conflict might cause the wrong data to be written to the iPod, hence corrupting it, if you then update the drivers, remove conflicting devices etc. then it should be possible to restore the device on subsequent occasions. A USB device infecting virus is unlikely to actually disrupt the normal operation of an iPod, even if it manages to add viral code onto the device, as this code will target the Windows operating system. Obviously avoiding contact with malware and impacts with the envionment will be a "good thing" for both your computer and your iPod.
B.) Software corruption should be cured with a Restore. Hardware problems will only tend to get worse. Your symptoms & history would suggest problems with the iPod's hard drive, but hardware issues on the source drive could also produce a similar effect. If the iPod gets a clean bill of health then check the laptop's drives using the Windows disk scanning tools.
C.) I've not had any contact with Apple Geniuses but I would like to think that your experience is atypical. I've certainly heard better reports about Apple's support than say PC World.

    Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.

    Try Spotlight Search your notes.
    1. From any Home screen page of iPad, drag your finger down anywhere on the center of Home screen.
    2. Spotlight search will now appear and you can search for apps, texts, or any other content you'd like just as you did on previous versions of iOS.

  • Not even Apple Genius could help

    I have a couple of problems concerning my new itouch, took it into the Apple store on 5th Av yest and the guy spent an hour looking amd was really not helpful.
    Last month I (I am a geek) made sure that all songs in my itunes account had artist art (or whatever it is called) I did this by a) doing the auto update available under advanced tab and b) dragging and repasting from Amazon those covers I did not have. I synched my 30MG ipod and all worked beautifully.
    I buy an itouch. I synched it to my itunes (I was not in a wireless area and did not register it). It was annoying to find that only one or 2 covers were transpoprted intot he itouch and the rest were the grey album coves with the music note (including stuf recently bought from itunes) Also I noticed that hardly any of my purchased material made it onto my ipod.
    I first problem was the art - after about an hour the genius tells me the art files are corrupted - I need to cut them all out - go back to amazon and regrag them in. To his credit on the 2 that we tested this worked but its gonna be a massive bummer - and I dont understand why it works on my old ipod and not the new one.
    1 - does anybody know how to get round this - I was going to restore to factory settings and try again
    2 - He mentioned some other album programme called cover scout or something whcih might be able to help, does anybody know anything about this programme and whether it would be any good
    3 - I am worried about not getting my purchased music onto the ipod - do you think that because i did not register it to the account that I use, it wont pick up the music i have used on that account......

    I presume that you are no longer trying to use iCloud for syncing with the "Flat Panel." It will not work since you are using OS X 10.5.8.
    Quit iCal, go to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars folder and remove any/all files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Then log out/in or restart and see what happens.

    Your firewall or av software is screwing everything up.
    Turn it off.
    Straight from Apple:
    Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the update server (gs.apple.com) on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

    If you can't remember them then go to Express Lane  and select 'iTunes' from the list of 'products' in the middle of the screen.
    Then select 'iTunes Store', and on the next screen select 'Account Management'
    Next choose 'iTunes Store Account Security' and fill in that you'd like your security questions/answers reset.
    You should get an email reply within about 24 hours (and check your Spam folder as well as your Inbox) - but some recent posts are saying that Apple have temporarily suspended the reseting of security question/answers whilst account security processes are improved, so it may take longer.

    I see that everybody are asking the same question about the ability of writing superscript or subscript in word processors on ipad.
    The real question should be why such an expensive device does not meet the student and specially the scientific community. None of the program's used in ipad supports these most important features for any student. And I thin the reason would be the so itself since none of the program's have this feature. Therefore everyone just have to come up with different tricks to do the job that it should be so easy.

    I have a Dlink DIR-855, Netgear WNDR 3700, and just graduated to the Linksys E-4200.
    Here are my observations so far. I will make comparisons to my latest installed router the 3700.
    GOOD
    The readyshare USB function works GREAT. Streaming on 5 GHZ movies at 13 mps, smooth as silk. MUCH BTTER then 3700
    Viewing hi res pics at 5.0 ghz is almost instant, way fater then the WNDR3700
    Download speeds touch quicker than the 3700
    Web Browsing same as 3700
    Speedtest.net test results on PC and Iphone are 10-20% faster than the 3700. PC on 5 ghz - Iphone on 2.4 ghz N
    Signal strength is excellent - touch better then the 3700 especially on the 5.0 ghz band
    BAD
    No IPV6 support yet
    2.4 ghz streaming is not as good as the 5.0 ghz (have to use mixed mode on the 2.4 channel I am sure that is not helping)
    also I am not on N but G trying to stream a hi res movie. 3700 was also bad.
    Logs - not registering security activity (maybe because there are no threats?) I used to get DOS attached alot that would show in the WNDR3700 logs, either its not registering them or the router firewall somehow is keeping them from getting to the poing of being registered in the log?
        Product is smaller then I expected. Very nice design. After 24 hrs the router is warm to the touch for those of you wondering about heat.
       I will try port forwarding next and answer any questions anyone has. Anyone interested in a WNDR3700 or DOR-855 for sale? This is my goto router. I know firmware updates will make it even better. Does anyone know CPU speed?
