Apple Gray Startup screen changes color before going to desktop.

Hey guys,
Since I upgraded my macbook air to lion last summer, the startup is a tad slower because the gray screen with the apple logo changes from a blu-ish gray to a yellow-gray before going to the desktop.  I do not have this problem on my iMac.  Anybody have any answers?
Thanks so much!

I find this topic kinda funny. several answers and NONE of you guys mention that the spinning wheel is supposed to be there and completly normal, it appears on every mac and I'm 100% certain it appeared on your mac before as well.
the spinning wheel is supposed to be there, it's nothing to worry about it's the regular OS X boot up working indicator. it even appears on the new macbook airs with flash storage built in, where boot up takes about ... 8 seconds or something.

If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • Pavilion DV& screen changing colors

When turning on the laptop, the screen changes colors (red, green, gray, blue, etc) before coming on.  It took almost 25 minutes for it to stop and then finally get the sign on screen.
What could be the problem? The laptop is about 3 years old.
If it need to be repaired, where would  i go (Staples? BestBuy?)
Is it something I could fix myself?
    TIA

  • Mac Pro 2006 tower, not showing gray startup screen - "asleep" till desktop appears

    Mac Pro 1,1 Dual-Core Intel Xenon, 2.66 GHz, 5GB ram, 2 internal HDs of 500GB and 1T. OS 10.6.8
I suddenly "lost" the normal gray startup screen on my Mac a few months back. I get just a black monitor screen until the desktop appears. I'm having other issues too and want to run disk utility off an external HD to fix internal HD permissions. But when I hold the option key and start, I can't select the external as a startup disk without a startup screen. Any ideas?
I'm wondering if adding the second internal HD may be the cause of this and other apparent memory issues (slower performance, web pages slow or not loading in all browsers, Finder folders only opening after a "wakeup" wait). They seemed to happen around that time, though I can't say I notice an immediate change. Could simply adding more HD real estate be the issue? Thoughts on that too?
I've tried the using Disk Utility before but can't recall if I ever got it to work on the 1T HD due to that lack of a startup screen. I've also played with plug-ins/extensions in browsers and can't say they're to blame.

We have a 2.66 MacPro 1,1 still running fine at present, the original graphics card was replaced by Apple as part of a known issue. This was over 4 years ago, close to the end of the cutoff period for the known issue IIRC.
I'd suggest you contact Apple & see if you can sweet talk them into doing something about the graphics card, even if it's just arranging a better price on a replacement. I recollect at the time of the exchange Apple was switching cards based on the installed OS. Having 10.6 installed meant we got a NVIDIA 8800GT, earlier OS's meant other cards were offered instead. I think it came with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT (but I could be wrong - ask me to dig out details if you want to know for sure).
    P.S.
Assuming the disk doesn't contain your user data, shutdown & remove your second HD to see if it runs any better, I find that the OS will wait for what feels like a lifetime when requesting data from a disk that has gone to sleep. SSD's change your perception, booting from one will freshen up the Mac, but won't fix the no graphics at boot issue, sorry.

  • Screen changing colors

Hey guys. Lately every time I've woken up my Macbook the screen changes colors. It will go through all of the primary colors and then some gray horizontal and diagnoal stripes, and sometimes the screen will flash in and out. Usually if I close the lid and reopen a couple seconds later, it's fine. But, is there any way of fixing this? I don't want it to turn into a bigger problem.

You may be having a problem with your screen, your integrated GPU or your connection cable between the logic board and the screen. The only way to ferret out which problem you have would be to take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on the unit. They can give you an idea of what's up with the machine and an estimate on what it would cost to fix it.
    Good luck,

  • Macbook turns on to gray startup screen but will not load and shuts down after about 45sec -1 min

    Hi There,
My Macbook pro has been experiencing some craziness the last couple of days.
Yesterday it was sort of slow and I was experiencing the rainbow spinning wheel between all applications.
The battery was very low so I charged it and attempted to turn it on today.
Now, when I turn it on I am experiencing the gray startup screen with the spinning geat and what sounds like
the CD drive going ( I believe I have a disk in there). After less than 45 sec to 1 minute the machine just shuts off.
I have tried the safety start and a few other startup methods, but always the same result.
Any ideas or should I go strait to Apple hospital?
    Thanks-

Did you find any help to this? I have the same problem!

  • My mac won''t go past the gray startup screen

I was using my ibook g4 (1.33GHz) yesterday to rip a dvd, safari was also running. the computer froze and black writing appeared on the screen at the left hand side. It said something about 'kernel', but as i don't speak computer language i just held the power button to turn off the computer, hoping it would be fine once i restarted.
I waited about a minute then i restarted but it wont go past the gray startup screen with the gray apple logo and the spinning progress wheel. I have tried to restart in safe mode and have also reset the PMU(power management unit) but still the same. I can't figure out what to do, and i really need to access files stored on my HD urgently. please if anybody can help me i''d really apprecite it,
    thanks.

  • My MacBook won't go past the gray startup screen.

I shut down my MacBook pro during a software update because the update appeared to have frozen. When I tried to reboot my computer afterwards, it would go to the gray startup screen with the spinning gear and not progress any further. I have tried multiple times to restart it, each time getting the same result, I have also tried starting it up holding down shift, another time holding down control option p r, and also holding shift. Each time gave me the same result of freezing at the gray screen. Any idea on what I can do to resolve this problem?

  • Start up screen changes color from blue/gray to brown

My Macbook Pro recently started changing colors:  When 'start up' it begins with a blue/gray (normal) color but then changes to a light brown color.  The apple icon is still present though...
Any ideas as to why the screen changes its color?

You should try to erase the drive with Disk Utility, so any filesystem problem will be fixed, but if you haven't made a backup, you'll lose files.
    1. Go to Utilities > Disk Utility.
    2. Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and go to Restore tab.
    3. Connect your external disk and drag it from the sidebar to Destination box, and press Restore.
If it doesn't help, take the Mac to an Apple Store

  • IBook not waking up and screen changing colors

    Hi everyone,
I've perused the previous posts and am having difficulty locating a post specific to my problem. My iBook is about 8 months old and has been working PERFECTLY up until a few days ago. The problem started when it wouldn't wake up after going to sleep. I'd close the screen as I've always done before, but when I opened it back up, it didn't seem to wake up. I subsequently had to do a hard reset. This continued throughout the day while I was testing it to see what the problem might be, then yesterday the screen started going crazy on me. It went black, then started randomly changing colors (green, red, blue, etc.). Clicking the mouse or hitting keys would do nothing. After a hard reset it would boot up and work fine for about 5 minutes or so, then the color changing would happen again. I haven't hooked it up to an external monitor yet...that's my next step. Any other ideas from anyone? Thanks!
    iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

So, I called Apple Support, and they instructed me to reset the PMU. I did so and the computer worked for about 20 minutes and now it's back to its old tricks. First the screen blacks out and then it either remains blacked out or goes crazy with randomnly changing colors. I can reset the PMU, but each time I do, it works for a few minutes, then blacks out again. I have Apple Care, so I'm not worried about the cost of any necessary repairs, but I am worried about the prospect of loosing my files. I don't have them backed up...I know, I know, I should have a file backup system. It's on the list of priorities. Any ideas/thoughts??

  • Screen changes colors after macbook dropped

Yesterday I accidentally dropped my laptop and when trying to recover, the screen changes from alternating full screen colors (red - green - blue and then black and white gradients). I'm guessing this has to do with the graphics but I am not sure if this has happened to anyone else and if there is some sort of reset button.?

That symptom appearing after a drop surely indicates hardware damage so no reset, even if available, is going to help. You'll need to have an Apple Store or Authorized service provider evaluate it. Hopefull it is something small like a damaged display cable but, if the GPU was jarred from its solder joints by the impact (quite likely) the only real cure is a new logic board.

  • Iphone 5 screen changes colors

I have an iphone 5 and it got some water damage. After a couple of days everything seemed fine, but when I was playing a game the screen started to slowly fade away and now whenever I hit the home button, it recognizes that but the screen is mostly black with changing colors. Everything works fine still because I use Siri to open messages make calls play music etc... Is it too late for the visibility/screen to be saved, or what should I do? Any suggestions?

  • Stuck on gray startup screen, no apple logo - help?!

My Powerbook chimes when I turn it on, then goes to the gray screen, but sits there, does not move forward, no apple logo, no spinning circle, no beachball, nothing. I can hold the power button to turn it off, again to turn it back on, etc., but nothing else. I tried starting in safe mode, same exact result. Tried starting from the leopard install dvd, still nothing. The DVD drive makes the noises as if it's reading the disc, but the computer does not get past the gray screen, and now I can't even get the disc out. Any recommendations??

Jason: Your present situation is not clear from your posts. Do you still have an installer DVD stuck in your optical drive? When you power up the machine while holding down the "c" key with the installer DVD in the drive, does the machine start up? If not, exactly what does happen?
Presumably there is an OS installed on your hard drive, because if there weren't, you would never have been able to get onto Hotmail. Does the Powerbook start up from its hard drive when no installer disc is in the optical drive? If not, exactly what does happen?
