Apple ][GS - GS/OS Disks?

Hello Apple Support Communities,
I am now the proud owner of an Apple ][GS. I have heard of the Apple ][ systems and read about them on the Internet, but I have to admit I know very little about them. Even so, when I saw this complete, working ][GS for sale for $20 I simply had to see what this was about...
So I set up my GS and the system test checked out OK, but when I boot (after the ROM version 01 message) I am greeted by "Check Startup Device". This seems logical--as I doubt it has a hard drive, and there were no disks in either of the external drives.
After doing some more research I found that these used GS/OS, a graphical OS made by Apple for the ][GS. Using Apple's "older software list" page, I downloaded what I expected to be disk images for this GS/OS. Maybe they are, but I really can't find any way to write them to a floppy.
-- The actual question --
I can not figure out for the life of me how to write these System 6.0.1 disks to floppies from a PC. My only Apple computers are the ][GS, an SE/30 full of pennies, and a PowerBook G4 with broken screen hinges--I would *prefer* being able to write from a PC because I have no other Mac with a working Floppy drive. I have the disk images, .sea.bin files. I was able to use StuffIt 2010 to extract them to .sea files, but after that I was stuck again... the .sea archives could not be extracted even with StuffIt, I would need to do this on an old Mac to extract the .SEA archives.
After much searching, I have come across an .SDK images, .SEA extracting archives, and even at one point a .2MG disk image. I can't figure out how to write any of these to a floppy on my PC's. Does anyone here have .DSK or .IMG copies of the System 6.0.1 disks, or the ability to make them if I beg them enough? (I have been desperately trying for 12+ hours to get these disks...)

Buying off of ebay should get you original disks.  If you want to collect items, great.  If you just want to get your computer running, search for a Mac or Apple users group near you.  We happen to have some IIGS disks but they are packed up and stored away.  I would have to dig for them.
We can find the download site and you can have the software for free.
As for creating the disks on a PC, that will only give you more problems than it is worth.  See if you can find a working Mac like a G3 to make disks for older Apple II computers.  You will be much better off in the long run.
Post back with the name of a large city near you so we can help you find recycled computers.
Jim~

  • RE: Apple iMac 27 Hard Disk Replacement Complaint

    Dear Customer ServiceManager,
RE: Apple iMac 27” Hard Disk Replacement Complaint
On May 12, 2011, Ibought an iMac 27”  for my daughter from your official Hong Kong website (www.apple.com/hk).
I am writing tocomplain about my dissatisfaction of your poorproduct quality, irresponsibleattitude of your customer service, and most importantly my painful experience with your Apple Careservice.  I am also very disappointed with how your Apple Care staff made a discriminating comment about your low income Hong Kong customers.
On July 28, 2011, mydaughter received an email from your company ([email protected]) informing her that the hard disk of her newly purchased iMac wasdefective due to factory error. You promised to replace the defective hard disk with a brand new onefree of charge, but when she asked your HK Apple technical support if therewould be on-site replacement service, your staff told her that she can onlyeither carry the 30-pound iMac herself to their service center or pay HKD1200for the Apple Care which offers the on-site replacement service.
First of all, I foundyour request very unreasonable.  Mydaughter was not the one who broke the hard disk, your company informed herthat you gave her a defective one. So why is the responsibility and the cost of taking the iMac for repairshould be borne by her, as an innocent customer, who paid HKD18, 000 for aniMac directly ordered from your official website?  She did nothing wrong but your company required her to barethe cost of transporting a 30-pound iMac and the risk of causing damage on theway.
Secondly, I believeyour company has deceitfully forced my daughter to buy your Apple Care, whichis completely against her original will. Since she is just a 22-year-old girl, it is impossible for her to carrythe 30-pound iMac by herself.  Andclearly, she was not given a choice but had to pay HKD1200 for the AppleCare.  This made me doubt if thisis a scam of your company.  Is thisa way of how Apple make extra money by giving your customer faulty products anda mission impossible, then forcing us to pay for a service that we did notneed?
Anyway, thepainfulness of enjoying your Apple Care service has just started…
On Aug 10, 20111:30pm, your service man came to change her hard disk with just a look as ifthe process was very ‘efficient’ and left after half an hour, even her Mac OShas not yet been completely installed. After he left, my daughter found that the OS could not be installed, soshe called your service center immediately and under her strong request, he hadto come back on the same day and check the new hard disk.  He found it proved to be a defectiveone again.  I was shockinglysurprised that your company, which always claims to produce products of highquality, selling at an expensive price, replaced my claim-to-be defective harddisk with a defective one again.  Iwonder how Apple’s quality control is done?  Your company didn’t even bother to check if the new harddisk is working before replacing it for customers.
My daughter requestedfor a new one, but then your service center said they had no new stock andasked her to wait until further notice. But without any definite date, it means my daughter’s brand new computercannot be used for… I don’t know how long.  Please notice that I paid HKD18,000 to buy a first-classproduct of high quality, as claimed by your company all over the world.
So my daughter had tocall your service center again and forced them to return her original harddisk.  Till 5:00 pm on the sameday, another technician came to reinstall her original hard disk into hercomputer.  Surprisingly, all thedata in her original hard disk was still there, which means there is a riskthat all her personal data and information had been accessed by your servicecenter staff.
As a father, I had totake over the matter from my daughter and called your hotline 2112 0099 at5:00pm on Aug 10, 2011.  After 30minutes, I could finally talk to one of your technical support staff for 10minutes about my complaint.  Heasked me to hold the line and wait for him to transfer my call to his seniortechnical support colleague, so I kept on waiting for 15 minutes, but finallythe line was being cut and no body contacted me and my daughter again.
I had to call yourhotline again at 6:00 pm and waited for another 15 minutes to reach one of youradvisors.  He passed my line toyour senior technical support advisor located in Singapore.  He said he is just a technical supportadvisor, so he could not take my complaint directly. He needed to talk to meagain on the next day with a customer service advisor.  He promised if he could not reach me onmy mobile phone, he would leave his direct line for me so that I would not haveto waste another half an hour to reach him through the hotline.
On Aug 11, 2011 5:28pm, I received a voice mail from your senior technical support advisor asking me to call him back but he didn’t leave any direct telephonenumber as he promised.  So I triedto call back the caller ID, which was shown on my phone.  However, the auto reply of this numberwas, “This is an invalid number”. I asked the Hong Kong Telephone Company to help me to call but even theycould not reach this number.  Theytold me this number was from Shanghai, China.  So I had no choice but to call your hotline again.  After 25 minutes, one of your advisorstook my call and I had to repeat my story to him again in order to have him putme through to talk to your senior staff 42058 again.  I asked him why he didn’t leave his direct number for me tocall him back as he promised.  Hesaid he forgot!  What a surprisinganswer to leave your customer nothing but a number that he knew clearlycouldn’t be reached.
By that time, I havewasted nearly 45 minutes to reach him, and it was already 6:20pm and thecustomer service advisor was off work. Therefore, I made an appointment with him again and we agreed that hewould call me between 9:31-10:00am on Aug 12, 2011 morning.  I took half day-off from my work towait for your senior staff to call me.
Unfortunately, Iwaited until 10:10 am and nobody contacted me again (I left both my mobilenumber and email to them).
Finally, I called the hotline again and waited for 15 minutes, an advisor put me to your on-dutyCustomer Service Manager, Ken.  After I told him my name, he realized that he should be theone responsible for calling me this morning, but since he had a meeting thatmorning, he forgot to call me again! The Apple staff didn’t keep their promises after all which disappointedme a lot.  It seems to me thatApple is unwilling to accept negative feedbacks from customers.
Ken told me thatthere was nothing he could do.
At the end, I wasreferred to a Customer Relations staff, Ms. Wing Liu.  Her response was also there is nothing she can do exceptgiving me a case number of my complaint. Since then, I never get any response from Apple regarding my case.
I believe Apple has afull record of all my conversations with your staff and thus, should be able tolook into my case thoroughly.  Isincerely hope that Apple can take my feedback seriously and respond to my complaintin a responsible manner, but not just trying to suppress your customers, whohave already been treated unfairly, from claiming their rights.   Otherwise, it is really a shamefor Apple to claim itself delivering high quality products and services allover the world.
    Yours truly,
    Tommy Fong
    Apple Customer

My daughter was trying to go to this Community Page by logging into her account.  But your Communities webpage displays a "We'll be back soon" webpage.  Then I try to login with my Apple account and it works fine.

  • How can I securely erase my Apple TV's Hard Disk?

The 40 GB drive is too small as everyone is experiencing and I need to upgrade my Apple TV’s hard disk to a 250 GB drive that are now available. I thought of doing it myself but it is not quick and I do not have the time people are reporting. Therefore, I decided to send it to a company to do the upgrade. I would like to securely erase the hard disk before I sent it out, because the company told me that they do not return my old hard disk. However, I do not know how to erase my hard disk, especially how to make a secure erase. Will Apple’s Disk Utility see the Apple TV’s hard disk to make a secure erase? I tried but it is not coming up in its pane. I would appreciate your help, please. Thank you, Tumay

There is no way to securely erase the drive without removing it from AppleTV and using a utility.
Best thing you could do would be to do a system restore which should erase the files, and then sync with a load of rubbish a couple of times (make some dummy video/music files) if you want to overwrite stuff on the drive. Seems unlikely that the company in question would be interested enough in your files to use professional data recovery to try and recover what you had on there.

  • Yet another pointless question about the practically non-existent iMac G5 Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk.

    I have a 17" iMac G5 (iSight model) also known as model A1144, PowerMac12,1 or MA063LL/A.
Where do I download the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) disk for this machine? Apparently nowhere. However, it would really help me on my quest if I knew what I was looking for.
Does anyone know what AHT version is compatable with my machine? 2.2.1? 2.3.1?
How about the part number on the disk? I have some Intel disks that say 2Z691-5734-A that (obviously) won't work.
Is the AHT on Disk 1 or Disk 2? I'm starting to think there never was an AHT for this model.
Where do I get those ASD disks the so called "geniuses" have?

    Disk 1: 2Z691-53179-A
    Disk 2: 2Z691-5493-A
    Compatible with eMac (2005), iBook G4 (Late 2004), iBook G4 (Mid 2005), iMac G5 17-inch (ALS), iMac G5 20-inch (ALS), iMac G5 (17-inch iSight), iMac G5 (20-inch iSight), iMac (Early 2006 17-inch), iMac (Early 2006 20-inch), Mac mini, Mac mini (Late 2005), Mac mini (Early 2006), MacBook Pro, Power Mac G5 (Early 2005), Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), PowerBook G4 (15-inch Double-Layer SD), PowerBook G4 (17-inch Double-Layer SD)

AHT I think was on a seperate CD.
Thanks Kappy, if v2.2.1 then search for...

  • Adding movies to apple tv form external disk

I want to be able to add a movie to Itunes from my external disk and then to apple tv, without erasin what has been added in the past but is not in itunes any more.
The memory in my computer is limited and my movies are all in a external disk. when I add a new movie to apple tv, the ones taht are allready on apple tv are erase automatically because I no longer have them in itunes.
how do I add movies withour ersing?
    regards,
    Laura

you need to keep pressing the option key on your keyboard while you drag & drop the content. do not release the option key until you are sure iTunes is just indexing the files. for example, when i add a music track in that fashion, iTunes says +analyzing volume+ ...
another option would be to uncheck +copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library+ in preferences > advanced. now you could use the regular +add to library+ command from the file menu. you will just have to remember to re-enable this option when you want to add new content to your internal library.
for movies already copied to the library, and which you want on the external:
go preferences > advanced and point iTunes' location to the external. select the movies in iTunes and right-click on the selection. choose +consolidate selection+ from the pop-up menu. when the move is done, point iTunes' location back to the internal and make sure the movies where indeed copied to the external. if so, you can delete the duplicate movie files from the internal.

  • Can I get Apple updates by hard disk

As I am not in ADSL coverage area, I have to use use Bigpond Mobile Broadband plan which has a much lower monthly GB allowance and costs considerably more than ADSL2. I have several occasions when an Apple update is required (or offered) which has subsequently turned out to eat into my monthly allowance (15gb). The last occasion was iPhoto which turned out to be a 1.6GB update!! 10% of my allowance gone in one day.
To my limited knowledge the only alternative to online updates is to get them sen by hard disk (or similar).
Is this possible or are there other alternatives?
    Any suggestions appreciated

Apple does not send out software except by the Internet. You can go to a local Apple retailer and ask if they could put an update onto your pre-formatted USB flash drive.
Alternatively, try downloading over a local public network such as the local library, Starbucks, etc.

  • MacBook stuck on apple logo. Repaired disk using disk utility, but when I restart, I'm still stuck on apple logo. Please help!

My MacBook is stuck on apple logo and heats up. I tried restarting in safe mode but it's still stuck. I also tried to repair the disk using disk utility. It says that HD is ok, so when I restart, I'm still stuck on the logo. Is there a way I could fix this without loosing my files?

Restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys so you can access OS X: About OS X Recovery
From there you can reinstall OS X, repair the startup disk, and restore from a Time Machine backup.
FYI ... wiht ML installed, the only way to repair the startup disk is OS X Recovery, not the Disk Utility app installed on your Mac. You can verify but not repair.

  • Which is the Apple TV 2nd flash disk capacity ?

which is the Apple TV (2nd series) flash disk capacity ?
    Thanks

Also of note it doesn't actually store anything indefinitely.
Say you rent an iTunes HD movie that might be 3-6GB or even more, it will buffer what is needed to the memory allowing seamless playback once enough has buffered (almost instant if you have >8Mbps).  However say you decide to watch later and watch some trailers, youTube, Netflix etc then the pre-buffered content will usually get overwritten and if on a slow connection it may take many mins or even hours to pre-buffer again to watch.
Nothing is really synced to it though some photos can be synced, but again I suspect some may be purged if memory demands are high.

  • Use Apple TV as storage disk?

I am getting crazy about the sync options. As may iBook (40GB) has less storage capacity as the Apple TV disk (160 GB) I thought I could use Apple TV as "final" storage place of my multimedia files. However, each time when I synchronise with iTunes, Apple TV deletes the content that I loaded before and keeps only the actual iTunes content (from the iBook). Means if I delete something on the iBook it will get also lost on Apple TV or I store it back in the laptop, which I don't want to do. Is there no way to avoid that? Maybe through USB connection? Appreciate your comments.

That's the last thing you would want to do.

The only recommended way to do this would be to get an external drive for your ibook and move your itunes library from the ibook to it. However you may want to read THIS
