Apple Hardware Test freezes after 2 minutes

I have an early 2012 MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM. Over the weekend I turned it on it ran very slow, to the point where I could only open up a finder window after five-ten minutes. My harddrive is still in tactic and the computer works fine in recovery mood. I did a PRAM reset and also SMC thinking that will solve the problem. Then when I went to turn on the computer it gives a loading screen for about a minute and then turns off. So I went in and ran a diagnostic test, both the extended and the shorter one. In both cases it gets to about 90% on the progress bar and then freezes. The mouse is still responsive, but it is very laggy. In the extended test it froze at 37 minutes and with the shorter test it froze after 2 minutes.
I was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and knew how to solve it.

Did you Open Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair?  (When in the recovery partition)

  • Apple hardware test freezes

My iMac has been having frequent freeze-ups - i get the little black box that says i have to restart the computer.Tends to be memory intensive tasks - for example i can copy from one disk to another but can't clone.
I have been trying to use the hardware test from my original install disks. The only thing connected is the apple keyboard and apple mouse. Ram sticks are from crucial and i have had them in there since i bought the computer ( bought it when they discontinued the 17" model). Hardware test freezes:
1.first time while trying to do its initial probe
    2. second time at the language selection window
    3. third time 1min 30sec into the extended check
4 fourth time at 22sec into the regular check.
if i shutdown with power button, unplug and wait maybe 15 minutes, the computer will boot into the usual desktop but sooner or later i get another freezeup. I am concerned that the operating system will get borked from the frequent powering off with the power button.
do these symptoms suggest any particular problem? could a failing battery cause this?

Simple way to test whether or not this is a memory issue is to remove one stick of RAM and run AHT again. Does it lock up? If yes, swap the sticks of RAM. If it still locks up, your RAM is likely fine.
You can also inspect the RAM sticks for any signs of physical damage. It's rare, but it does happen, that you'll see some kind of residue that looks like it came out of one of the chips. It's usually white in color, but it doesn't have to be. Electricians and what not tend to call that "letting the smoke out" of a chip. If you see anything like that, you know that bit of RAM is dead.
Kernel panics can happen from bad RAM, but more often it's the result of something even worse. So, hope that all it is is some bad RAM. If you're a religious person, praying might be a good idea. The other alternative is the logic board is going bad, and if that's the case, you'll just want to buy a new computer.

  • Apple Hardware Test freeze on MBP 15 mid 2012

I changed the ram on my new mbp 15 mid 2012 from 4gb to 16gb. Now AHT  freeze on Testing Memory with both type of ram, why? It's not my first time when I change ram, I'm on my 4th MBP. Any ideas? tks

    Hi,
there is a known problem (I know it for sure from a friend that works at a apple service) with non retina mid 2012 macbook pros not responding in AHT test, most likely your RAM is fine. Just do MemTest and see if anything's wrong with it.
    FYI
Reported this problem in bug reporter some time ago, the answer:
Engineering has determined that there are no plans to address this issue.
Clearley they know about it and don't want to solve it, to bad.

  • MacBook won't boot after trying to repair with Disk Utility. Cannot boot in Safe Mode. Just powers down after about 5 minutes. Apple Hardware Test says error 4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265 But I cannot find anything on the net about it. MacBook 4,1 Intel.

    Hello Everyone,
I am in dire need of assistance I am hoping someone could provide. I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.
I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".
I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

You've a couple of issues .... when Disk Utility tells you it can't repair a drive, if the error is a soft error, like an invalid tree or node, Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro) can handle it. However, if Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro) can't handle it, you can erase and write zero's to the hard drive and restore to it, or you can buy a new hard drive. Sometimes running SMART Utility can provide additional insight into the health of the hard drive.
THe 4SNS error is a sensor error.  You could install iStat Pro to see if something is indeed getting too hot or remaining room temp or less.  You may need to take it into an Apple shop so they can use their thermal diagnostics to test and isolate it further.

  • Error Code After Running Apple Hardware Test

I ran apple hardware test (I'm having problems where my computer freezes for like 10 seconds with the mouse being movable... but it happens very frequently. like once a minute. it's SOOO ANNOYING)
this is the error i got after running apple hardware test:
(it came out as a Mass Storage error... which is Hard Disk i guess)
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
    2STF/8/3: S-ATA Bus 0-Master
    **ERROR*CODE***ERROR*CODE**
Does anyone know what I can do to fix it. Apple Hardware Test only allows me to find the error and then restart or shut down... which is useless cause what is the error code supposed to mean. I've only got Apple 1 yr repair support left... so I cant call up Apple or anything. Does anyone know anything about this and what I could do to fix it!?
    I know about this: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
I might go to the apple store, but I dont wanna make a trip out there for nothing.
Does anyone know what I can do or should I just take it to the apple store.

Actually, i just spent like 1 hr working with disk utility using the os x install disk and i think it finally worked. im so happy for myself! yay... i wouldnt accept no for an answer. Disk utility kept saying "oh first aid failed because it didnt exit right" or something... total garbage response... i kept pressing verify disk and then repair disk and then i did the verify permissions and repair permissions too... didnt really know what i was doing with the permissions... but it finally worked so thats all that mattered! yay... its back to normal!!

  • After an apple hardware test on my iMac I got an error code ?

So I did an extended hardware test on my apple imac and after an hour of testing i got this error code: 4MOT1/140000003: HDD-1363. The next day I did another hardware test on my apple imac but this time iI did a quick hardware test and after about five minutes of testing this time I got the same result except this time the 4-digit code or number after the 'HDD-' changed to a different one, like... 1476. So what does this mean, I mean my computer is working perfectly fine without any problems (except for that one time when my brother punched my iMac's screen really hard a couple of times and a couple of hard punches on the hard drive however it was working fine but he did it again and it froze the time he did it again and i had to restart it but everything was STILL working fine after I restarted it !) but when I do the Hard ware test I get those errors so what does this mean ? Is it possible to fix ? Would apple fix it for free as my warranty has expired ?
    All help appreciated
    Thanks
    Yaseen

don't know why, but try using Disk Utility to repair the drive:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

  • Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is GONE!! after Lion install

After installing Lion on my new early 2011 MBP the AHT is gone...
Pressing "D" will not load the AHT (it was installed and working fine in my MBP prior to Lion).
I called the APP hotline to inquire about it and the technician couldn't boot into the AHT on all the macs with Lion available to him.
(a report has been filed with the engineering team)
According to the newly updated KB: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
QUOTE: "Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet."
After pressing and holding the "D" key the Mac just loads into the desktop... There is no online AHT or pre-installed AHT available...
    >> Is anybody else having this problem?? <<
If you are having the same problem maybe you should also report it to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ or the APP hotline...

HOW TO FIX THE AHT PROBLEM IN LION:
Just to clarify what Francisco was saying in Spanish:
    > The original AHT that came preinstalled in the MacBook Pro (and maybe all other Macs) is found in disk #2.
    > Originally I thought the AHT had a different partition on the HD but it ends up being an extension of the OS.
    > This is not installed in OS X Lion, If you used the USB key or download it from the App Store, the AHT will not be included.
    > So, to install it back in, you can either run the install from the DVD (just make sure you don't install iLife again and other files which you may not need)
    OR
    For Road Warriors
Since installing the bundled package will also install other Snow Leopard files; You might want to try this:
    > Download Pacifist ( http://www.charlessoft.com/ )
    > Drill down the CPUHelpFiles install package and only install the CPU_AHT package.
By the way, there is no way of undoing this, unless you want to reinstall Lion from the recovery partition.
    > Restart your mac
    > Everything should be A+ ok
    > To test what you just installed restart the mac and hold down the "D" key before the screen turns white/gray. After a few seconds you should see the AHT loading screen:
Done! there is no need to have that DVD with you when you travel...

  • Error Codes after Apple Hardware Test...

After someone here told me I've been experiencing kernel panics, I did some digging on the x lab site and re-ran the Apple hardware test in loop mode. after 17 runs, it returned the error:
    4MOT/2/40000005:Right Side
I can't seem to find a list of error codes anywhere. My MBP has two 1GB RAM chips, both were pre-installed when I got the machine from Apple. I haven't tried switching them to see if the same error is returned on testing or with ONLY one or the other installed to see if this is truly a RAM issue. I thought I'd post to the forum for ideas first...

I'm afraid I have no idea. If you have AppleCare, I would ask them about the error code. You do have a different error code (/2/ not /1/ and different number after the second slash) than the link, so perhaps it is not a fan motor that is your problem, though I'm hard-pressed to think of what other motors the MBP has (I don't think the hard drive is on the right side, for one.) Alternatively I can imagine, since you said it took you 17 tests to get the result, that this is an intermitent problem--for all I know, just a slightly loose/poorly soldered wire--and so istat hasn't detected the problem yet.
I think AppleCare or a Mac Genius is your best bet, if you have the one or can get to the other. In particular, unfortunately, Apple does not seem to publish the hardware error codes; it only makes them available to techs.
    Good luck!

  • Graphics card/logic board issues: Macbook Pro Freezing during Apple Hardware Test!

I have a macbook pro that was working fine then the screen started acting funny. It would sometimes "tile" up where you would see the same issue repeated over and over on the screen and then computer would freeze. Sometimes the screen would start to have a strobing look and then freeze. I thought the computer was crashing but once the screen froze but the processor was still running. I knew the computer was still processing because I was streaming a video online and the audio from the video continued to download and play event though the screen was frozen.
I went to the apple store and they said they think it sounds like failure of the hardrive, graphics card, display, logic board. A new hard drive was just put in the computer about 4-6 weeks ago, and if it is the other issues could be $500-$800+ to repair. I tried to use the Apple Hardware test (non-extended test) but it keeps freezes at 2 min 32 secs every time when it starts "testing the main logic board"....
Has anyone seen anything like this and have another way to test what the problem could be? Thanks!

I know you're in denial, but it really does sound like the motherboard or graphics board which is integrated with the motherboard.  Yes, fixing these things will cost almost as much as a new MacBook Pro.  Get a new one, take the HDD out of your old one, and start over again.

  • Imac wont start after electricity went off, no power surge. Apple Hardware Test ,no trouble found, please can anyone help, thanks ,Andy

Hi, please can anyoner help. Tried apple hardware test and test results say no trouble found so am trying the extended test .any help would be great, thanks,Andy.

Try resetting the smc and pram.
    To reset the smc
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    To reset pram
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • Quicksilver Freezes After 1 Minute (Full Boot)

Booting normally lets the user use the system for 1 minute. After 1 minute, it beachballs and then freezes entirely, but no kernel panic.
Booting into safe mode has the system running fine. PRAM and everything else has been reset, machine contains no PCI cards or anything but the stock video card.
Why would safe mode work and normal boot wouldn't? After a week of this problem, did a fresh install of OS X (zeroed out the drive), which continues to do the same thing. Current system is latest stable 10.4. Can burn DVDs just fine, no other issues aside from there being no audio due to safe boot.
    Any ideas?

    Hi-
There are default items that are "placed" there for you. I assumed that you also installed your applications and such. Sometimes conflicts arise between the OS items and the third party items.
Since your problem occurs even after a fresh install, it could be a hardware problem. I don't think so, as you are fine in safe mode. Have you installed any custom fonts? these can cause problems:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
Do you have the Apple Hardware Test disk? If not, you can download a copy:
    http://www.info.apple.com/support/aht.html
Suspects would be, first and foremost, RAM. Second, could be the hard drive. You can also rum Memtest for testing the RAM:
    http://www.memtestosx.org/
More questions- Did the problem exist prior to the 10.4.10 update? Did you run 10.4.8? How was the system under 10.4.8?
