If you are still using Snow Leopard -
Shut down your computer and disconnect all peripherals (keyboard & mouse if pertinent) from your computer.  Now reboot.
If the Mac starts up normally, shut it down again and then plug in one of the peripherals (keyboard or mouse first) and start up your computer again.  If it does so successfully repeat the process, adding one peripheral at a time until your Mac acts up.  At that point, disconnect the last peripheral you added, reboot your Mac and search the peripheral vendor's website for an updated driver.
If no driver exists or the problem remain after installing the new driver, try a different cable or a different port on your Mac.
If none of the above works, again disconnect all peripherals from your Mac, hold down the "shift" key to start up in "Safe Boot" mode.
If the Mac starts up correctly, restart without pressing the "shift" key.
If your computer still does not start up properly, shut it down and restart it while holding down the Apple+Option-P-R keys; keep holding "all 4 keys" down until you hear the startup sound "twice."
If none of the above work Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
(If Disk Utility cannot repair, you will need a stronger utility (3rd party) - Diskwarrior or Techtool PRO)
Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
Remove any 3rd party ram.
Reinstall Snow Leopard - This will install a "fresh" copy of Snow Leopard without archiving old system files but leaves the rest of your files in place.
If your computer is still under warranty or you have Apple Care, take full advantage of it by letting tech support deal with your problems.  It's what you're paying them for.
Out of warranty - take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

Before you go through that trouble open About this Mac > More Info... > System Report > Audio and see if the system actually knows it has a microphone.  Then you can look into Applications > Utilities >  Audio MIDI Setup and see if the microphone is there, select it and make sure the sliders are set to full. Then in System Preferences look for Sound > Input and make sure it shows up there and the sliders are at least half way up. If none of that works do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
then go through the process of looking for the microphone again as the reset may reenable the mic.

  • Does the Apple Hardware test come with Snow Leopard?

Does the Apple Hardware test come with my iMac 27" i7?
If so, how is this activated and is it used as a periodic test or only when a problem develops?
    Thanks

The Hardware Test will be on the Install DVD(s) that comes with your iMac. With the correct DVD inserted, (re)start the iMac while pressing & holding the "D" key to start into the HT. Run it anytime you want to check the hardware.

  • IPod stuck with white screen?

Hi, my daughter was playing a game on her iPod touch and suddenly the screen went white.
I can't turn it of nor does it respond to anything. HELP!?!?
    Misha

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the apple logo appears.
You may want to do a restore using iTunes after this or avoid having too many Apps open at once while she plays that specific game.
    Hope that helps Mishab :]

  • Apple hardware test failed

I have a 3 1/2 year old MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz. Suddenly I started getting kernel freezes....your computer need to shut down.... Sometimes I get the same message at upstart. Sometimes the screen starts blinking and them freezes with grey/green lines down the screen. The Apple hardware test failed with failure code: 4VCD/1/40000003: VideoController. I can start from the restart in hardware test.
Any suggestions out there?? Anything a non apple technician can do?

The service shop said they couldn't do the graphic card test, so they believe it isn't covered by the repair program. But they said the card is the problem, just not that problem

    HI,
*"I have opened disk utility top repair disk, but when I click on disc image, repair / verify disk buttons are unavailable to click and S.M.A.R.T status is not supported."*
You need to select "MacintoshHD 10.5.8 not "disc image" in order to run Disk Utility and Verify and if necessary, Repair the disk.
That's why you are seeing this dialog.
*are unavailable to click and S.M.A.R.T status is not supported.*
Also, run the Apple Hardware Test.

  • Stuck on white screen with apple logo

A few days ago my macbook pro started making a weird buzzing noise and froze. I waited for a while until I shut it off. When I turned it on again it froze at a white screen and after a few minutes it was a white screen with the apple logo.
I kept waiting, and after a while my mac restarted and it happend all over again. I then tried to find something here to help, and I tried everything!
I tried the disk utility thing and when I tries to verify the Macintoch HD it said "The volume could not be verified completely. Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click repair disk." I did that, but then it said "Error: disk utility can't repair this disk... Disk, and restore your backed up files."
    what should I do now?
Also I tried the safe mode thing when I start up the machine, but that doesn't seem to work either.
I haven't backed up my files either.. So, I don't know what to do, and I don't want to lose my files. Can I do something about that? Please help me!

Call AppleCare. You should not be having problems with a brand-new machine.

  • Stuck on white screen with 5 pink vertical bars and apple logo

Hi all,  mid 2011 I bought my first IMAC which operated great until a couple of hours ago.
All of a sudden the screen started to flicker
I tried pushing the on/off button which did not help.
Then I pulled the plug out of the socket.
    Put the computer back on.
I got a white screen with 5 pink bars and apple logo.
    Then a white screen.
    Nothing more.
Started the computers several times but no luck.
So, I called the shop where I bought it and just went there. Only thing they can do is send for repairments and reset the whole system.
And since my computerknowledge goes only so far I do not have a back up...And they can not get my files from the computer.
Therefore i was advised to go an Apple store, which I did. But I was told they also cannot help me with getting backups.
So my question is : how do i get an backup from this iMAC if I cannot get past a white screen with 5 pink bars?
And furthermore, how could this is happen?
Anyone any advice and ideas regarding this matter?
    Thanks very much!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This is not a good sign, because the GPU is damaged. Unfortunately, you can't do anything to recover your data, but here's the good part: the GPU isn't soldered to the logic board in your Mac, so only the GPU will be replacing and you won't lose anything more.
You can take it without a backup before the hard drive won't be modified. However, when you get your computer after being repaired, buy an external drive and start making backups using Time Machine or a clone app like Carbon Copy Cloner. All hard drives fail and you don't know when your hard drive will fail, so it's better to make backup of your files

  • My iMac won't start up -- makes the usual start up sound, get the gray screen with the apple, and whirling icon goes endlessly below it.  apple hardware test code is 4MOT/2/40000004:0x3d2fdb90

Prior to shutting it down, I had to force quit Safari.  I has been running a little slow lately, but nothing major.
    Apple Hardware Test code shows
    4MOT/2/40000004:0x3d2fdb90
    anyone know what that means?
I have a late 2006 intel-based iMac with the iSight camera, running Snow Leopard

Thanks SO MUCH!  I am having nightmares about all that could be lost.  If the fan can be fixed, then I can cope with the backing up and maybe relieve the hard drive so it gets faster.  As Murphy's law would have it, I just bought an external drive but haven't had a chance to set it up to automatically back up.  Your reply makes me feel much better... There is hope that I can lip along with this old iMac until I can afford a new one.

  • 2008 iMac running beautifully untill recently. Screen glitches and freezing. Apple Hardware test showed error code  4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have not seen others with this code. Guessing it is a fan issue based on the ODD and HDD error codes

computer felt hot and while running apple hardware test the screen glitches covered the screen and it froze. Now computer wont boot up. Again AHT code is 4MOT/2/40000004:ADD and I have just seen ODD and HDD codes discussed on other threads. Those were hardrive or superdrive fans, so I am guessing this is a fan issue and then it fried by graphics card. Any help as to whether this is game over or worth repairing would be very appreciated.

You need to take it to your local Apple Store or AASP for a professional evaluation. Apple does not publish the codes from AHT, you can Google the code you got and see if you can determine what it means however the best method is to let a pro handle it.

  • HT1338 i cant get in to os system. the screen just stuck in white screen and apple logo

i can not get in to my os system. the screen just stuck in white screen and apple logo

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
