Apple Hardware Test Unavailable? Mac Pro 2008, Mavericks installed

Restarting my early 2008 Mac Pro with Mavericks installed while holding down the "D" key and it's just booting up like normal. Tried holding it before it shuts down, holding it after the startup tone, and holding it after the grey screen appears (which the apple site says is wrong).
Any suggestions?

That will only work with the original discs that came with the computer.

  • How to run Apple Hardware Test on Mac Pro with ML preinstalled?

I have Mac Pro 5.1 (2012) which came with Mountain Lion preinstalled. It didn't have install DVDs. How do I run AHD? Restarting with D, or command+D, or option+D didn't work. It would just restart the OS. And Mac Pro didn't support Internet AHD eather.

Thank you for your reply, Carolyn.
I read this article. None of those applied to my case:
my Mac Pro came before 2013 and it doesn't have Apple Diagnostics  built into it,
it doesn't have Apple Hardware Test built into it,
and my Mac Pro came with Mountain Lion preinstalled and it did not have system software disc or USB flash drive.
Restarting while holding down the D key simply doesn't work it just reboot back to the desktop.

  • Apple Hardware Test on a late 2008 MBP new HDD

    Hey Community!
I own a Mac Book Pro - Late 2008 shipped with OSX 10.5.5. Currently I a new 500GB HDD and a 265 SDD are running in my MBP. The Super Drive is in an external USB Housing. Current OS X is version 10.7.1.
I need to run the Apple Hardware Test, because sometimes the system seems to freeze for at least 30 seconds.
    What I've already tried:
*) Holding down "D" at the startup -> nothing happens, normal startup
*) setting start volume to external fire wire optical drive, insert 10.5.5. Installation disc, restart, holding down "D" -> startup with installation wizard
*) same with 10.6 Installation disc
*) same with choosing the Backup Partition when holding down "Alt" at startup and then pressing "D"
Always, I was connected via WIFI and Ethernet.
Can someone give me an advise how to run the Apple Hardware Test, or how to reinstall it on the new SDD Harddrive, where my system is mounted?
Thank u and greetings from Austria
    Claudio

Try using your disk utility to read the drives. I'm not at my computer now but if you go into utilities->disk utility you might be able to solve it from there.
Also try holding down the C key on boot or esc.

  • Hardware Test on MacBook Pro running Mavericks not working, Help!

    Hi Folks,
I am hoping someone can help me get the Apple Hardware Test working on my Mid-2012 MacBook Pro (model 9,1) running OS X Mavericks v10.9.5.
It came with Mountain Lion pre-installed.  I successfully ran Apple Hardware Test when I received it by holding D while powering up.  No problem.  Since then I have done nothing involving OS X other than installing Mavericks.
Recently I have installed some RAM and wanted to test it.  I find the Apple Hardware Test no longer works.  The mac simply boots into the username screen as usual.
    Here's what I've tried:
    0. Reading instructions on Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support.  Ensured Mac was plugged in, and confirmed I pressed D prior to grey screen, and confirmed I held it down.  No effect.
    1. Pressed Option-D while powering up.  No effect.
    2. Searched for .diagnostics directory in /System/Library/Core Services/.diagnostics
It didn't appear to be there.  (I don't know why, I can only guess that the upgrade from Mountain Lion to Mavericks must have hosed it)
So, I found instructions on how to obtain the AHT .dmg file for my version of MacBook Pro and downloaded it.
It's at this link by the way:
    http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Hardware_Test/022-5879-A.dmg
Then copied the .diagnostics directory from the .dmg into the /System/Library/Core Services/ directory on my HDD.
Tried again, pressing D after powering up.  No success.  Option-D, same thing.
So, I don't know what else to do.  IEverything I have read indicates the test should run.  It doesn't.
    Can anyone help?
BTW: I don't have an install disk.  System came with Mountain Lion pre-installed and I subsequently upgraded to Mavericks a while later.
    Thanks in advance,
    - BS

Forget the code yoyu have a hardware problem. Only Apple, or a AASP, knows the codes and what they mean. Take it to a genius bar.

  • Apple Hardware Test on Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo (early 2007) with no DVD?

    Hi,
My Mac is keep on freezing and I would really like to know what is wrong with it. (I did PRAM NVRAM reset 100 times... didnt help.)
I can't find my OSX Tiger DVD which was included when i bought my Macbook Pro in January 2007. So I've been reading through forums like crazy trying to find another way to run AHT (apple hardware test). So far I came up empty.
So my question is: If I upgrade from Lion (which is my current osx on this machine) to Mountain Lion, will I be able to use online AHT (option + d)? Or more general: is there any way to run AHT on my machine or any other way to find the broken component. or should i just throw it away?
    Thank you.

Take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and they will run free diagnostics. If there's a lot that needs to be done on your machine to get it back up and running, ask about Apple's flat-rate repair pricing. For less than $350, you could have a machine that is almost like new.

  • How to obtain apple hardware test for MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009), how to obtain apple hardware test for MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2009)

I no longer have the software disk (OS10.5) that came with my MBP in July 2009.  I only have the $10 Snow Leopard disk from Apple, which does NOT seem to contain any Apple Hardware Test (AHT).  I have tried starting while holding d or option keys to no avail.  Does neither my laptop nor OS 10.6 install disk have AHT?  If not, can the appropriate AHT be obtained?  My wife has an older MacBook & her original 10.5 install disk, but it will not launch AHT in my MBP.  Any suggestions?
    Thanx

I like the advice to contact Apple and simplky pay for a new AHT.  I did that, giving them the serial number of my MBP and indicating it was a June 2009 model, 2.66 gHz Core 2.  However .....
I received yet another Apple FedEx shipmet with yet another different Mac OS X Leopard install DVD; this makes three in all!! Just as with the 1st DVD, these two will NOT mount on my desktop, are NOT seen by Disk Utility (or by Drive Genius) and cannot boot my MBP laptop in either of 4 different modes: (1) start-up with "d" (2) start-up with "option d" (3) start-up with "option" (4) start-up with "c".  Apparently none of the disks I received have Apple Hardware Test on them, although that is what I paid for in early December.  It may be that the last two disks really do have Mac OS X Leopard on them, but because I am now running OS 10.7.5 (purchased from App store with no AHT), the disks cannot be seen by my laptop.
The two most recent incorrect DVDs I received have the following part numbers:
                        SRF2Z691-6037-A [indicated on packing slip 10.5 Retail-International]
SRF2Z679-6341-A (indicated on packing slip 10.5.6 Retail (PCrly 09) In]
I happen to have MacTracker app 7.2.1.  It indicates that my laptop is a MacBookPro 5,3 model A1286 EMC2325 and requires Apple Hardware Test 3A171.  Apple never sent me the correct AHT.
I suspect that Apple's cost to ship 3 incorrect DVDs by 1- or 2-day FedEx vastly exceeds the $17.44 price I paid for a working version of AHT for my computer, but have yet to receive.

  • Apple Hardware Test error MacBook pro Retina

Hi, could the Retina Owners please perform an Apple Hardware Test (Pressing D while booting)? WITHOUT the Power Adapter connected ist Shows an error? So you have this "error" too? Thanks Ben

I didn't read it on the Apple Hardware Test tips page, but I think I remember reading (somewhere) that the power adapter should be plugged in on notebooks when running AHT.
Maybe that's the case and, hence, your error?

    Hi Wendell,
Sorry for the inconvenience. NVIDIA is currently working on drivers that support CUDA on Mavericks 10.9 with some of the older NVIDIA cards such as the GTX 285 and the Quadro 4800.
For others interested, the Quadro 4000, K5000 and GTX 680 ect... work with CUDA in 10.9.

  • Cannot start-up to the Apple Hardware Test — MacBook Pro & Lion

Whenever I try holding the D key before and throughout all of the start-up process, it simply makes the grey screen appear for longer, and slow the whole process... but never beings the Apple Hardware Test.
    I'm following Apple's official instructions:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.
    Why doesn't it work?
My MBP was shipped as follows:
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
But I have upgraded to Lion! Do I need the disk still? If so, why am I to lumber around a disk from a previous OS... good that I didn't throw it out!

I'm trying to find the answer to a similiar question.  Here's my thread.

  • Can't perform Apple Hardware Test of any kind

I can't perform an Apple Hardware Test – on a late 2008 MBP – from original software disk, because my superdrive (matshita dvd-ram uj-868) has long been broke.
Whenever I insert any kind of disk, it doesn't even read neither the machine recongnizes it and it's really a **** of a bum to eject it (when lucky I manage to remove it with force-eject).
Anyway, these are the sollutions that Apple tells in order to perform the AHT

If your Mac has OS X v10.8.3 or earlier (…) I'm running OS X v10.8.4
If you updated your Mac to OS X v10.8.4 or later, use the system software disc or USB flash drive that came with your Mac. Well, obvious reasons…
    So, what can I do?!
P.S.: I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test:
To know what happened to my SuperDrive.
For a long time it keeps with high temperatures (at least 70°C 158°F), causing the loud fans to pump up. Even with low %CPU usage (already have SMC fan control)

  • Mac Pro 2008 Can't start Windows 7 / 8 Installer

I'm trying to load Windows 8 (And have previously tried everything with Windows 7) on my Mac Pro early 2008 with Mountain Lion, and cannot get the installers to initiate.
When I start the bootcamp assistant and reboot, my mac freezes before ever getting to the installer. When I reboot and hold option to manually select the installer, it freezes as soon as I select it. I've tried this from a DVD, USB, and even an install partition i setup on my HD, all with the same freezing results. This is a legitimate copy of Windows 8 system builder I'm working with and have installed it perfectly in Parallels.
I should note I upgraded my video card a long time ago to a gt 120, so I'm wondering if the video card might be the problem. I've installed Windows 7 with this video card in the past so I'm guessing this is a Mountain Lion/Bootcamp 5 issue.
Has anyone else with a Mac Pro 2008 succesfully installed Windows 7/8 from Mountain Lion/Bootcamp 5?
Any input would be immensely appreciated!

There are no Windows 8 Bootcamp drivers. Windows 8 is not supported.
Use Parallels or Fusion to install Windows 8. By doing so you eliminate the need for drivers since the virtual machine creates virtual hardware and drivers.
Once the Windows 8 Bootcamp drivers are developed and released you can then install using Bootcamp Assistant.
Read this forum. Some people are posting that they had some success with the Bootcamp install. but if you have to rely on your computer then don't take the chance.

  • Error 4PRC in Apple Hardware Test

    Hello,
I have a 24" iMac (2.16GHz Core Duo, 1.5GB RAM) from late 2006. A few days ago, the display went black although the power stayed on. I turned it off, and it hasn't been able to boot since then. Whether I try to boot normally, in safe mode, or from the install DVD, the same thing happens: (1) happy startup sound with gray Apple logo; (2) that screen darkens and *sort of* a kernel panic message appears in the center. I say "sort of" because the kernel panic message's rectangle is in the right place and some of its text is readable, but partway down the rectangle it looks as though the drawing is offset somehow. Anyway, that's how this problem manifests itself: a kernel panic very early in the boot process.
Miraculously, the Apple Hardware Test starts up successfully from the install DVD. Both the normal test and the extended test give the same result: the RAM passes its tests, but when it reaches the CPU, the following error message appears, and the tests stop:
    4PRC/1/40000003: Processor
That looks bad. I searched the web and various forums (including this one) and found very little information. An Apple document marked "Error Codes, Apple Hardware Test version 3A117" suggests that the appropriate action is to replace the processor.
I suspect that if I take the iMac to my local Mac repair specialists, they will offer to expensively replace the motherboard. I'm an old UNIX nerd and have tinkered with lots of machines other than Macs; can I simply replace my iMac's CPU myself?
Or is CPU replacement in fact unnecessary, when some other fix might work? Does anyone have specific advice about this error message?

In case it's helpful, here's a textual description of the panic from single user mode startup (which fails just as badly):

  • How can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3

Does anyone know how can i get or download the apple hardware test for a macbook pro made in 2012 running Mavericks 10.9.3. Thanks.

    Sean and Andy -
I have to agree with Andy here. I am having the same problem on a mid 2010 MBP (6,2). I have already read the AHT info provided by Sean's link, and they are less than helpful. I'm sure they will be helpful to those who find that they work, but they are confusing if this is not the case. For example, my MBP(6,2) came with ONE (not two) installation disks, so the instructions don't work for me. Another issue is the instructions confound the descriptions related to the MBP, the original (delivered) software (OS X version), and the current installed OS X upgrade software.
So here's what does NOT work for me...
         (A) I cannot install 'Disk 2', since I never received this with my original (new) purchase in mid 2010.
         (B) I have checked my firmware versions and they are all up to date, as per Apple's information.
         (C) As suggested in another thread, I looked for /Library/Core Services/.diagnostics and it was NOT present. I followed his instructions, downloaded the correct (I believe) dmg, and installed it. It is in the correct place, and I can see all the invisible files using Pathfinder.
         (D) When I re-start holding down the D key (immediately), it just goes through the normal boot routine; no evidence of AHT.
(E.1) When I re-start holding down OPT-D, I get a spinning globe, and then it prompts me for a network (wi-fi) connection.
(E.2) For some unknown reason, the prompt identifies between 2 and 5 of my --neighbors'--  routers, but does not show mine. (??!!)
(E.3) The routers are listed alphabetically; however, my router SHOULD be at the top of the list by this criterion, but it is nowhere to be seen.
(E.4) The 'internet recovery' process then allows me to enter a network name AND password. I do this, for my current wi-fi router, and the process rejects it as an incorrect login ID. It is NOT an incorrect login ID!
So, now asking Sean and Andy (or anyone else) for further suggestions... ???  As Andy suggested, many people ask questions here because they have -already- worked through the 'official' recommendations, and have found them to be inadequate.
Any advice would be appreciated!  TIA.
    Ed

Not saying this IS your problem, but … I just went through avery similar problem with Mac Pro3,1. Here is my story.
On boot of any Mac OP system drive, internal or externalHDD, (Lion or Snow Leopard), original Mac Pro install CD, Snow Leopard CD,nothing.  (Would only go to gray screen, apple logo, spinning gear that would stop spinning after about a minute.)  But, it would boot on XP drive.  However, in XP, on Windows black startupscreen, had alternating columns of two different patters of blue dots and XPgraphics were not as they should be (larger icons on desk top, slow response, different size of desk top (maybe 600x400 when it should have been1024x768).  Supplied hardware test showedno failures.  Took it to shop.  Their better diagnostics showed nofailures.  All peripherals (my drives, myCDs, etc, disconnected.  (NOTE: they didnot try a new video card since they did not have one.)  Still would not start even using their drives(external or internal).  Shop tried a newlogic board.  That did not work and theyput the original one back in.  Shop saidall they could come up with was new processors. This was not a cost effective option and they had none to try.
After thinking about it more, I figured it could be thevideo card: the original 8800 GT that came with the Mac: that it was so bad itwould not start in Mac OS but would limp along in XP.  I was all set to buy another vid card one-bay just to try.  While doing thatresearch, came across several articles on the Internet that discussed vid cardfailure due to micro-cracks in some solder joints.  These develop due to age/heat cycles.  The proposed fix was to ‘reflow’ the solder.  Figured it was worth a try before spendingthe money on a new vid card.  Found thesedetailed instructions on youtube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4  I followed the procedure, put the vid cardback in, and now it works just fine.
I did not and would not do this until I had ruled outeverything else.  But, it has worked forothers and it did work for me.
