Apple Hardware Test won't start from original Apple DVD

I'll make this one short and to the point, and here're what I did to try to start the Apple Hardware Test - and failed:
1) Disconnected all connected network and hardware except the bare essentials (Apple USB keyboard and mouse).
2) Insert DVD#1 of the original iMac media (then OS X v10.5.2)
3) Shut off iMac. Start, holding 'D' key (with the iMac DVD#1 in the drive)
4) Keep holding 'D' key, AHT didn't start, instead the DVD disc ejects, and the grey screen shows folder with question mark, nothing happens thereafter.
5) Repeated 10x, no difference.
Somebody knows what's wrong?

Holding down C key does start the Mac OS X installer; in which I was able to "partially" diagnose that my HDD is toast by using the Disk Utility. It formats (erases), but as soon as I finished erasing, I tried to verify the disk, and it says it already has problems and cannot be repaired.
I am thinking if during the loading of AHT (from DVD), it tries to cache some files onto the internal hard drive. Since my drive is no good - thus the reason for my using AHT, which is to find out if I get a 4HDD/11 type error - the AHT simply cannot load under my circumstances.

  • Apple Hardware test won't start

    Hi,
I have tried pressing 'D' on startup, as well as command+D and command +R on startup and nothing works.
This is a macbook late 2008 model running mountain lion.
Appreciate your time in helping me solve this.

When you get your computer, Apple Hardware Test is stored on the hard disk, but it's deleted when you erase the hard disk or upgrade OS X, so it's no longer in the hard disk.
The DVDs which came with your computer have Apple Hardware Test, so insert the Mac OS X DVD and hold the D key while your computer is starting to start in Apple Hardware Test. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

  • Macbook Pro 13" just won't start from original dvd

My MacBook 13", mid 2011, started to slow down, freeze. Tried to start up in safe mode, after that it just won't boot at all. Tried with the original DVD holding down "C" but no disk boot. What to do?
    Rgds

Since it's a Mid 2011, take it in for service, it's still under warranty.
Try charging it up and a SMC, PRAM reset, Hardware Test

  • MacBook Pro 17 - 10.5.8. Won't start from HD or DVD

Hi, I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 17, which isn't feeling well at all.
It all started when I forgot my account password (It's my personal machine but an overly 'helpful' IT guy at an old company I worked at set himself up as Admin on my mac and then left, as I did shortly after - so I've never had admin access which was never a problem really).
As I don't think I still have the discs that came with the laptop (moved house a few times / they could be in storage) I looked at trying to reset my account password in single user mode. The first step of this was to do a 'fsck -fy' and here it told me I had a 'disk0s2: I/0 error.' and 'Invalid node structure' and the volume check had failed.
So that was a concern, I then borrowed a friends install disk (I think it was 10.6?) and tried that, at this point the laptop would recognise and boot from the DVD - but I couldn't access disk utility.
So I thought I'd buy a copy of 10.5.8 Leopard from ebay - that came this week - and trying to boot from that disc has had no success - if I hold the option key at start-up nothing happens I just get a grey screen and spinning icon. Stranger still if I hold the 'C' key down on start-up the machine goes to grey then chimes and continues to chime like a PRAM reset!
So now when I try to boot the machine normally from the HD I get the Apple logo and spinning wheel, which is on screen for a while, then the machine powers down.
I can still get it to start in single-user mode, and it used to get me to the account login screen once I typed 'exit' in this mode. But now when I do type 'exit' it returns to a grey screen and then shuts down.
I don't have a back-up of my hard drive so my priority is trying to rescue what I can. I don't want to waste money on Disk Warrior or something if I can't boot from the DVD?
So what can I do?  Any help gratefully appreciated.

Any reinstallation is not going to be successful if you have invalid node structure. You have bigger fish to fry here than worrying about DVD access.

You also mention that the 10.6 disc would read from the DVD but not allow you into Disk Utility? What happened when you tried to access it? Was it selectable and then didn't do anything?
We can't really narrow down whether it is the DVD or anything else at this time.
If you don't have a backup of the information it is probably toast if you cannot get Disk Utility to work. I would normaly suggest DIsk Warrior but that is a $79 gamble if you are not sure if the drive is working or not. It may be your last hope to recover whatever you can from the drive.
Also, what was the original OS installed on the machine before it crashed? Was it 10.6 or was it the 10.5.7 you mentioned?

  • MacBook won't start from HD or DVD

White MacBook (A1181) will not start up on HD or system disc. Normal startup gives folder with blinking ? and with system DVD inserted, gives endless message to "shut down by holding the power button and then press again to startup"
It was working fine, went to sleep, woke up in an unresponsive state so I did a forced shut down. Now it will not startup. I get a white screen and either an Apple or a folder with blinking ? depending on whether I'm trying to start with a DVD or from the HD.
    HELP!!!!

No, because even if you're using a DVD as a boot disc, your HD still has to be the one to ultimately read it through the optical disc reader. The DVD is just being read as another partition in a drive. Had the partition been bad, then it would have booted fine. (Even if you haven't really partitioned anything yourself, your "Macintosh HD" is your standard 1 partition. It's kind of like... to put it "real world," having departments in a department store. The whole "store" is your hard drive, but your "Macintosh HD" is a department, and your DVD is a department, like Macy's, Shoes and Clothing.)

The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972).
This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

  • Hardware Test Won't Work!

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro i5 with 8gb running Mountain Lion and the Hardware Test won't work. Everytime I hold down the "d" key it just boots normally. Since I have an early 2011 Mac I used to have Snow Leopard installed but then I upgraded to Mountain Lion. What should I do?

... the Internet Recovery window wouldn't accept my network name and password.
No idea, but review the chart here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
If your usual or current Internet connection has requirements or settings not supported by OS X Restore, either change the settings to a supported configuration for the duration of your OS X reinstall, or seek out acceptable networks from which you are permitted to access the Internet ...
Try changing your network settings to conform to whatever OS X Recovery needs.
Also why would my Mac be the the computer built without AHT if I bought it in early 2011?
This long thread describes what happened: Apple Hardware Test (AHT) is GONE!! after Lion install

  • IMac5,2 won't start from Raid formatted disk on Firewire

    Hello,
I have an external disk with 2 drives. The disk is setup as RAID1 (I tried both, ApplesDisk Utilitie's RAID and SoftRaid). In both cases I can't bless the drive as startup disk and get the error Could not find IOKit entry for
IODeviceTree: ... and the iMac also won't start from the external FW drive.
As soon as I connect the drive via USB it works.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Matthias

    Hi Matthias
What make of external HD or enclosure are your drives in?
If it boots with the USB connection then you should try a different FireWire cable.

  • Starting from the install dvd

I am would like to reset the admin and the password. Help says to start from the install dvd. I put it in held the c key untill the gray apple came on. The drive starts like it is going to start, then stops and the zero with the slash comes on and all stops. This an IMac G5 running 10.4.10, using the 10.4 dvd.
    Thanks

Make sure the Install DVD is the one that *originally came w/your computer*, not scratched, dirty or smudged.
The Install DVD does take awhile to complete. Just keep holding down the "c" key until it takes.

  • Emac won't boot from 10.4 dvd ???

I have a 1ghz superdrive emac with 512mg ram. The box works fine it just won't start from a black retail dvd of 10.4.0 ??? I'm confused, cause this box is on 10.4 and this disk would have been my only way to get it there.............. Yes the disk works in other machines. I option/alt to the boot from screen and the emac ejects the dvd.
So how did I get it to 10.4 a long time ago if it doesn't boot from a retail dvd?

Does it also eject the DVD if you restart holding down the c key until the gray screen / Apple logo appears to boot directly from the optical drive instead of using the option key to invoke Startup Manager?

  • Apple Hardware Test won't load

    Hi,
I'm running OS 10.9.4 on a late 2011 MB Pro and am unable to boot up to the Apple Hardware Test partition. Also won't boot to system install USB flash drive. Any help wold be much appreciated.

It's option key to boot AHT cd. You can run it, but firmware and OS updates makes the disk veriosn obsolete. So don't panick over a false positive.
I would backup files and c boot from the installer disk, select Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Permissions see if that works. Also disable hard drive sleep in System Preferences>Energy
If not repeat above and Erase w/Zero option and reinstall the OS. If your going to bother with all that, might as well make the jump to Tiger and iLife '06 (not included with Tiger)

  • Apple hardware test won't run

I'm positive my exhaust fan is on it's last leg.  I want to run a hardware test to confirm, but nothing works.  I've shut down and held D on starting, I've held Option + D, I've held Command + D, I've restarted, shut down and started up with all these.  Nothing works.  I have a wired USB keyboard, and I've tried with it directly plugged into the mac.  I'm at my wit's end here!

    Hi Amanda Marvin!
Try running the Apple Hardware Test by using the steps listed in this article about AHT:
    Using Apple Hardware Test
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
If necessary, you may need to also try resetting your SMC if you are having difficulty loading the hardware test:

  • HT201257 Apple Hardware Test won't stop

My daughter went to turn on her MacBook and the Apple Hardware Test came up.  I Googled what the AHT was & so we let it run in order to shut it down.    When we started it up again, the AHT popped up again.  We cannot get it to stop! (There is no disk inserted & she does not even remember hitting any keys that may have started this in the first place.)  Thanks for any help you can lend.

  • Hardware test won't proceed - should I upgrade/change hard drive?

Searched the discussion and my problem is a combination of various links...
My powerbook had no problems for close to 5 years. Things started running slowly and of course, things were getting full. Will get an external hard drive in 2 days so burned everything on CDs.
    Ran the Hardware Test but it asked me to type "mac-boot" to continue booting;
    Screen showed: Invalid memory access at %SRRO:ad3c0108 %SRRI: 3c01086f;
Then some other lingo appeared and didn't offer me an extended test as indicated on the discussion boards. After awhile, I forced shut down.
Took to local apple store and sales sold me 2 512 Ram. I was suspicious and asked another sales b/c I'd thought I could only have 1 chip installed and max was 640 total.
When my order arrived 1 day later, I was told that only 1 slot was available so finally installed 1G. At the counter, when I started up the computer, this flashing globe in a box and then the file with question mark appeared. I was told it was a software problem and they did something to tell the disk where to go at start up.
When I went to pick it up, technician said there was a hardware problem and my disk is failing fast. He wanted to do a diagnostic test and potentially replace the disk.
I took it home to back up the rest of the stuff, did some research, did the MacJanitor. Is it just me or after MacJ, the computer seemed quieter, almost calmer?!
Start up still takes 3 minutes and some slight ping/ clanging sound but still working.
Tempted to do the Hardware Test again since I ran the Disk Utility and things were verified and repaired. Is the Hardware Test the same as the Repair Disk? I can't find any "repair disk" and I keep everything out of the box.
Should I just replace/upgrade my drive instead of spending money doing a diagnostic test?
If it's replaced, (and with the extra ram), can I prolong my computer's life by 5 more years?
    Thanks,
I'm a novice who needs advice in lay person language.

    Joyce:
Your math is correct. You can buy and probably install an internal HDD for the price of one of those utilities. However, I have both Disk Warrior and TechTool Pro and they are tools I use regularly for OS X maintenance, so they pay for themselves over and over. In any case, I think you have a point and a plan.
I suggest that you use SuperDuper to clone everything over. It is a lot faster and more efficient. You can then test and repair it on the external.
I think you will love what a new 120 GB HDD does for your computer. The newer drives are faster (5400 rpms as opposed to 4200 rpms) than the original drives, and you will notice the difference in performance. In addition your storage capacity triples and the free space helps the performance of your HDD, and lessens the risk of directory corruption. If you are at all handy and would like to attempt the installation yourself, you will find step-by-step directions at ifixit. If you think you would like to attempt it, please post back for some tips.
Once you have the new HDD installed you will need to format it before installation. You can reformat and erase the old HDD, and after you have swapped it out you can install it in a Firewire enclosure and use it as an external firewire HDD. Here are step by step directions for formatting:
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
    Cheers
