Apple Hardware test won't start
Hi,
I have tried pressing 'D' on startup, as well as command+D and command +R on startup and nothing works.
This is a macbook late 2008 model running mountain lion.
Appreciate your time in helping me solve this.
When you get your computer, Apple Hardware Test is stored on the hard disk, but it's deleted when you erase the hard disk or upgrade OS X, so it's no longer in the hard disk.
The DVDs which came with your computer have Apple Hardware Test, so insert the Mac OS X DVD and hold the D key while your computer is starting to start in Apple Hardware Test. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509

Apple Hardware Test won't start from original Apple DVD
I'll make this one short and to the point, and here're what I did to try to start the Apple Hardware Test - and failed:
1) Disconnected all connected network and hardware except the bare essentials (Apple USB keyboard and mouse).
2) Insert DVD#1 of the original iMac media (then OS X v10.5.2)
3) Shut off iMac. Start, holding 'D' key (with the iMac DVD#1 in the drive)
4) Keep holding 'D' key, AHT didn't start, instead the DVD disc ejects, and the grey screen shows folder with question mark, nothing happens thereafter.
5) Repeated 10x, no difference.
Somebody knows what's wrong?Holding down C key does start the Mac OS X installer; in which I was able to "partially" diagnose that my HDD is toast by using the Disk Utility. It formats (erases), but as soon as I finished erasing, I tried to verify the disk, and it says it already has problems and cannot be repaired.
I am thinking if during the loading of AHT (from DVD), it tries to cache some files onto the internal hard drive. Since my drive is no good - thus the reason for my using AHT, which is to find out if I get a 4HDD/11 type error - the AHT simply cannot load under my circumstances. -
Apple Hardware Test won't load
Hi,
I'm running OS 10.9.4 on a late 2011 MB Pro and am unable to boot up to the Apple Hardware Test partition. Also won't boot to system install USB flash drive. Any help wold be much appreciated. It's option key to boot AHT cd. You can run it, but firmware and OS updates makes the disk veriosn obsolete. So don't panick over a false positive.
I would backup files and c boot from the installer disk, select Disk Utility and Repair Disk/Permissions see if that works. Also disable hard drive sleep in System Preferences>Energy
If not repeat above and Erase w/Zero option and reinstall the OS. If your going to bother with all that, might as well make the jump to Tiger and iLife '06 (not included with Tiger) -
I'm positive my exhaust fan is on it's last leg. I want to run a hardware test to confirm, but nothing works. I've shut down and held D on starting, I've held Option + D, I've held Command + D, I've restarted, shut down and started up with all these. Nothing works. I have a wired USB keyboard, and I've tried with it directly plugged into the mac. I'm at my wit's end here!

HT201257 Apple Hardware Test won't stop
My daughter went to turn on her MacBook and the Apple Hardware Test came up. I Googled what the AHT was & so we let it run in order to shut it down. When we started it up again, the AHT popped up again. We cannot get it to stop! (There is no disk inserted & she does not even remember hitting any keys that may have started this in the first place.) Thanks for any help you can lend.
Reset your computer’s PRAM

Can't get Apple Hardware Test to work
So I'm trying to run the Apple Hardware Test. I start the computer up and hold "D". It boots into OS X like a normal startup. So, I plug in the Ethernet and hold option-D to do the AHT from the Internet. It tells me "Apple Hardware Test does not support this machine".
So, I try to install the "iMac EFI Update 1.8" from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1493 (which is for my iMac model, which is a iMac (Mid 2010)), but it says "This software is not supported on your system." I also tried the later version, v1.9, from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1498 but it isn't for my iMac and so I get the same error.
So now I'm stuck. What should I do now? Thanks that was it. It says AHT on the disk itself. I successfully ran it, and it found no problems ("No trouble found.") I ran the basic test only because I have 16 GB RAM, and so I imagine it would take a long time to run the extended—probably at least two hours? And I don't know what more that would find that the basic wouldn't?
-
Prior to shutting it down, I had to force quit Safari. I has been running a little slow lately, but nothing major.
Apple Hardware Test code shows
4MOT/2/40000004:0x3d2fdb90
anyone know what that means?
I have a late 2006 intel-based iMac with the iSight camera, running Snow LeopardThanks SO MUCH! I am having nightmares about all that could be lost. If the fan can be fixed, then I can cope with the backing up and maybe relieve the hard drive so it gets faster. As Murphy's law would have it, I just bought an external drive but haven't had a chance to set it up to automatically back up. Your reply makes me feel much better... There is hope that I can lip along with this old iMac until I can afford a new one.

Cannot start-up to the Apple Hardware Test — MacBook Pro & Lion
Whenever I try holding the D key before and throughout all of the start-up process, it simply makes the grey screen appear for longer, and slow the whole process... but never beings the Apple Hardware Test.
I'm following Apple's official instructions:
To start up your computer in Apple Hardware Test:
Press the power button to turn on your computer.
Press and hold the D key before the gray startup screen appears. An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature.
Note: Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.
Why doesn't it work?
My MBP was shipped as follows:
For Apple computers that shipped with Mac OS X v10.5.5 to 10.6.7, Apple Hardware Test is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer.
But I have upgraded to Lion! Do I need the disk still? If so, why am I to lumber around a disk from a previous OS... good that I didn't throw it out!I'm trying to find the answer to a similiar question. Here's my thread.

Hello Everyone,
I am in dire need of assistance I am hoping someone could provide. I have a MacBook 4,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo processor 4GB Ram. It is taking over 10 minutes to boot up past the gray apple screen when I turn it on. First I cleared the PRam (?) then I checked the disk using Disk Utility Verify, and it said the disk needed repairs. So I ran the disk repair and it said it was unable to fix the errors on the HD.
I did a little research and tried booting into the Single User mode, then running /sbin/fsck -fy. It said that it found errors but could not fix them. I ran it two more times as suggested and got the same result each time. I then tried rebooting and now instead of taking 10 minutes to boot up, it takes about 5 minutes on the gray apple screen and then just turns off. I started in Verbose mode to try to troubleshoot the error and it appears the last thing to come across the screen before power down is a message "Apple Yukon 2: RxRingSize <= 1024....etc".
I decided next I would run the Apple Hardware Tester. The test came back with an error code "4SNS/1/40000001:IG0C-0.265". I am very good at searching the web but I could not find any errors that had the IG0C or IGOC or any combination at the end, but plenty of 4SNS/1/40000000(1) errors with different endings. From what I can tell people are saying anything with 4SNS/1/4000000 is a logic board failure, but this computer was literally just booting this morning until I did the /sbin/fsck -fy.
Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.
Thank you for your time. You've a couple of issues .... when Disk Utility tells you it can't repair a drive, if the error is a soft error, like an invalid tree or node, Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro) can handle it. However, if Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro) can't handle it, you can erase and write zero's to the hard drive and restore to it, or you can buy a new hard drive. Sometimes running SMART Utility can provide additional insight into the health of the hard drive.
THe 4SNS error is a sensor error. You could install iStat Pro to see if something is indeed getting too hot or remaining room temp or less. You may need to take it into an Apple shop so they can use their thermal diagnostics to test and isolate it further. -
Won't boot from Apple Hardware Test or 10.1 Install disc
Disk utility states that I need to boot from a CD and then run Disk Utility to repair my disk. However, neither CD seems to be recognized as a viable startup disk from either holding down the C key or trying to select it as a startup disk in System Prefs.
FYI, I am running 10.6 and trying to boot from a 10.1 disc and an Apple HT disc with SW version 1.2There is no way any Intel Mac will run with 10.1 -- it was released before there was any Intel support in the OS.
Every Mac model requires a specific version of the Apple Hardware Test to support its hardware. (If yours is the "Late 2008" black MacBook, the Mactracker database says it requires version 3A147.) Somewhere in the fine print of your original grey system disc set, or on any other grey system disc for any model, you will find the version of AHT it contains, if it contains any version. Unless that version is the same as your Mac requires, it won't work. -
Apple Hardware Test wont start
Hey!
I hope someone can help, I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro, I want to run Apple Hardware Test, by holding down the D key whilst restarting the computer or from the computer being completely shut down it doesn't work. I have also tried booting AHT with the installation disk in the drive.
Any thoughts?Try starting the AHT with the OPTION + D keys.
You should be able to use the #2 install disk. It has the AHT instructions on it.
Ciao. -
How to start Apple Hardware Test under OS X Lion
Since I made the upgrade to OS X Lion I cannot start Apple Hardware Test with the old method that works under Snow Leopard.
Under OS X 10.6.8 I used to keep D key pressed until a picture appeared in the middle of the screen. With Lion it doesn't work, even under Wi-Fi internet connection.
Any suggestions?Have a look at this discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/15772841#15772841

Upgraded to Yosemite and now my DVD drive doesn't play or burn. I'm trying to do an Apple Hardware Test. That doesn't work either. I follow the instructions to shut down the computer and hold down on the D key. That is not working. It just continues its start up
I've tried and it has failed about half a dozen times. Is there another way to get it to work?FWIW. Mine boots into AHT with disc 2 inserted, restarting, and holding down the D key. Alternatively, mount disc 2, run this command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click & hold Finder's Dock icon, and select RELAUNCH:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
That unhides all hidden files/folders.
Now, drill down to /"Applications Install\ Disc"/System/Library/CoreServices/ and drag the .diagnostics folder into your SL boot volume's /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder.
Run this command to hide the normally hidden files/folders and RELAUNCH the Finder again.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
This should allow the machine to boot into AHT when restarting and holding down the D key -
I have a MacBook Pro with Lion Preinstalled, so AHT was present on the hard disc and worked when the product was new. One of the first things I did from new was run AHT and it worked fine. But now it doesn't start - instead the machine (eventually) boots into normal OS X.
Holding down "D" no longer starts Apple Hardware Test! Any idea what's happened and how I fix it? Or do I need to go to the Genius Bar?
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b), if it makes any difference.
Any ideas? Thanks. However, even with an internet connection that doesn't work for me - the machine just (after an extended delay) boots normally. It doesn't download.
Option-D works for an Internet-based AHT. However that only works with an internet connection. It doesn't seem to download it and install it - it needs internet every time.
Any idea how my local copy of AHT disappeared? I haven't repartitioned the drive or knowingly deleted anything. And how do I reinstate it (because if you need AHT your hardware problems may preclude internet access!)?

I'm trying to transfer my iTunes movie library from my iPad2 to my external HD, because my PC's internal SSD doesn't have enough memory to hold all the movies. Any ideas?
