Apple Harware Test image

I have a G4 mirror desktop Mac. I need to run the Apple Hardware Test CD on my machine but I have misplaced my copy of the CD. Is there soewhere I can download an image of the AHT CD?

Randy:
The issue with getting an image from someone is that it's an unauthorized redistribution of Apple software. It's too bad that it's thus restricted because the file size of the software is really small and could easily be shared if it were legal to do so. I often wonder why Apple hasn't made it freely available for download, but perhaps licensing rights may go beyond Apple or something.
Here's how to contact Apple. Use the Apple Software Upgrade Center number if you're in the U.S. Have your Mac's serial number handy when you call.

  • Apple harware test

    Bonjour,

  • I did a apple harware test i have an error code 4SNS/1/C0000008: TG)H- -124

i have an error code 4SNS/1/C0000008: TG)H- -124  What does it mean ?

I don't know, but it could be a sensor that controls a fan. There is also a sensor on the rear of the display that could also control one of the fans.

  • I can"t open the apple hardware test from the applecare support website

i received the applecare training program for my birthday and while exploring the applecare service source website i found a image file of the apple hardware test (AHT) for each model along with a pdf of the service manual and a pdf of the AHT service codes. The problem i'm having is, i cant open the image of the AHT.

After downloading that image, open it and it will show up mounted in your desktop. Then, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), right-click your Apple Hardware Test image in the sidebar and burn it to a DVD. Finally, start your computer from the disc, holding the C key, so Apple Hardware Test should start, always that you have the correct version for your computer.
You have Apple Hardware Test in the Applications disc that came with the computer. In that case, hold the D key while your computer is starting

  • Apple Hardware Test (Extended) not progressing

After upgrading my white MacBook (13-inch, mid 2010) from Snow Leopard to Lion, i was getting Kernel Panics, maximum of 5 min after startup. So i decided to downgrade back to Snow Leopard.
I erased my hard disk, tried to install SL from the DVD that came with the MacBook, i got a Kernel Panic. I tried it for 6 times, all with the same result.
I made the Apple Hardware Test, it passed.
Now i'm trying the Apple Harware Test (Extended), it's been almost 6hrs and here's the status:
    Testing Memory
    No error messages
    Pass Number: 1
    Time: stuck on 2hr 15min 49sec
    Progress Bar: about 13%
However the mouse is still responsive. Is it normal for the test to take this long.
    Thanks
PS: i tried the option-commant P R before running this test, and i dont have any peripheral connected

I have had endless issues with kernel panics since Lion.  Rolling back to SL won't save you, because the last couple of updates to SL added in the cause of the panics:
Some combination of multitouch trackpad drivers and the graphics card drivers.
So, what I've done, and it seems to work better ( I can use this POS laptop for more than an hour now) is:
System prefs: turn off all the multouch stuff. All the gestures. Off.
Also, battery life is low because this os constantly writes to the hard drive and uses the network card. If you happen to push the system while you hear the fans spin up as it receives a push notification ...panic.
Spotlight has big problems with Lion.  I stopped it from indexing almost everything, installed quicksilver, then turned off indexing on the drive.  I uninstall flash unless I need it also.
kernel panics for me would always feature AppleHWSensor in the panic log.
60% triggered by me using the expose show desktop guesture.  However, I assigned that to a keystroke... works fine.
I've lost 3 hard drives to this garbage, ( you can't keep on just turning off modern unix systems, via kernel panic)
    Try what I suggested:
No Flash until you need it.
Turn off all the multitouch stuff in trackpad prefs
stop spotlight from indexing your logs, and Caches. Then turn it off.

  • I have a latest 2.7 EFI update but i still don't have the ATH(Apple Hardware Test) software! why is that so? do we have it on mountain lion?

So as u know the question
ill tell u the steps to try them out(no harm will be caused to u or ur com)
During restart-up press the D button before the gray screen appears and hold it for about a minute until u see a 4 or 6 bit image of old mac icon appear and then it loads u go select any language and click hardware test full and then tell me if it DOES HAPPEN ON OS X 10.8(mountain lion).
    Thnx apple and u guys!

To use Internet Apple Hardware Test, start up your Mac and hold down both the option and D keys on your keyboard.

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:

  • Cannot access Apple Hardware Test

I recently learned about the Apple Hardware Test, and decided to run it, just to see if it reported anything wrong.
    I have a MBP from early 2008, 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 15.4".
The built-in optical drive no longer reads DVD-type media. It will read CDs, but not DVDs of any kind. This has been verified by an Apple Genius; it needs to be replaced.
I have a Snow Leopard disc in an external drive, connected via USB. When the Mac is running, I see the Snow Leopard disc; I can access normally.
However, when I restart (or turn off, then on) the computer, and press and hold 'D' right away, nothing different happens; it boots into OS X just as it normally does. I have tried this a few times, both restarting and turning off then on, holding down the 'D' key right away.
Is the problem that the OS X disc is in an external drive? If this is the problem, then how is the AHT accessed on a MacBook Air?
Is the problem the Snow Leopard disc itself; does it not have the AHT on it to begin with? I can no longer locate the original 10.5 discs that came with my computer, but I believe I may be able to get ahold of a relative's later-version 10.5 discs.
Or is there some other problem or something else I'm doing wrong?

    Hi again Justin,
    Justin J. Rebbert wrote:
Well, as I mentioned in my original post, no, I do not have the original Leopard discs that came with my Mac. But as I also mentioned, I can probably get ahold of a set of Leopard discs that belong to a relative. One thing I did not mention, though, is that I'm pretty sure these Leopard OS X discs are retail (did not come with a computer). Do you know for sure whether or not regular Leopard discs have the AHT on them?
Yes, 100% certain. AHT comes only with the original discs that were supplied with your model MBP.
eww has suggested a link for you where they can be purchased for $33. However, with an internal optical drive that cannot read CDs/DVDs, your only options are:
    1. Repair/replace the internal optical drive.
    2. Purchase an external optical drive.
    3. Create a partition in your external drive and then using either Carbon Copy Cloner or the Restore feature within Disk Utility, create a bootable image of the original OS DVD. When you start up from this bootable image it behaves in exactly the same way as if you started up from the OS DVD.
    Justin J. Rebbert wrote:
I have no idea what you're talking about when you "like you did with Snow Leopard". I didn't have to make bootable images or use different partitions or anything like that at all, and I don't know what made you think that.
My apologies. In your original post you said:
I have a Snow Leopard disc in an external drive, connected via USB. When the Mac is running, I see the Snow Leopard disc; I can access normally.
The above made me conclude that the "external drive" was an external hard disk drive. Reading it again, I can see that you mean it's an external optical drive.
Now, I know that eww, in his reply to you stated the following:
I don't believe AHT can be run from an external drive. It requires all external devices to be disconnected except the AC adapter.
eww is very knowledgeable and well respected in these forums so I'm hesitant to disagree with him. I believe that one can carry out a AHT from an external optical drive but will test later today or tomorrow to make sure.
    Justin J. Rebbert wrote:
Also, just FYI, from what I've read about accessing the AHT in other posts on these discussion forums, apparently all Macs (of a certain unknown vintage and later) have the AHT accessible from the hard drive, but this is only true if it's the original hard drive, which furthermore has never been reformatted. My MBP's hard drive is an upgraded (bigger and faster) replacement, so unfortunately, that's no longer an option.
No, it's not only true if it's the original hard drive.
It is, however, true if the OS on the replacement hard drive was installed using the original disks that came with that model Mac. The OS can the be upgraded to a later version but the fact that the original OS DVDs were used then, assuming the Mac model is of the vintage that allows it, a hidden small partition is created thus allowing the user to boot into AHT without needing the original discs to start from.

  • HT4904 Apple Hardware Test or not?

Tried to open Apple Hardware Test on my MBP Pro 13", but pressing the D-key while starting the MBP did not work.
Turned to "Computers that can be upgraded to use Lion Internet Recovery" where the latest MBP 13" is early 2011.*
My MBP 13" is late 2011 (recently upgraded to OSX 10.8.1).
What can I do to use the test?

(Strange because the disc have never been used. I called Apple about this and they
said that they do not produce CD/DVDs anymore with AHT.)
    Which number did you call?
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Can Apple Hardware Test disk work when a hard drive has no OS installed yet

I removed a bad original hard drive from a PowerBook G4 12" aluminum notebook. It made clicking sounds as it ran, and would not boot. I replaced it with a 320GB Western Digital HD. I also upgraded the original 512KB memory with 1GB.
Before removing the bad hard drive, I was able to boot just beyond the language selection dialog from a full installation CD (Mac OS X v10.2) while holding the "C" key during power on, but could not install it, of course, on the bad hard drive.
Now with new hard drive replacement in the PowerBook (formatted via fire wire from a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard) and the upgraded memory, I ran a Disk Utility check via fire wire and found the new hard drive in the PowerBook to be in good working order and ready for an OS installation. However I can no longer boot the PowerBook G4 with the full installation CD in the customary manner, getting instead the flashing question mark over the finder folder icon.
I decided to see if there might be some other problem by using a PowerBook G4 Apple Hardware Test disk. Upon booting from the test disk, I get a message that declares the disk will not work with the PowerBook G4 machine.
    What's up?
    Message was edited by: techtoots

There's more to my original question than whats on the face of it. Please read more about this below. However, I will still wish to know if an AHT, say an original one if that's important, will do it's thing when no OS is installed.
Pretty sure that I'm NOT using either disk or sets of disks that came with this G4 PB. Included among what I do have are 6 grey disks:
    __PB G4 Software Restore 1
    __PB G4 Software Restore 2
    __PB G4 Software Restore 3
    __PB G4 Mac OS 9 Install v9.2.2
    __PB G4 Mac OS X Install v10.1.4
    __PB G4 Applications
And 2 Jaguar full install DVDs:
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 1
    __Mac OS X v10.2 Install Disc 2
I was hoping to be able to find something useful among these disks - if not in a strait forward manner, them by some manner of hacking.
I know how to use my MacBook Pro create a disk image that will house any number of these DVDs. My thought is to create something that can be cloned to the PB G4 via fire wire. I just need to be sure how to daisy chain multiple DVDs in terminal mode, if more than one DVD is required in the cloning process.
I have placed an order for Leopard 10.5 - full installation DVD direct from Apple.
Once received, I will have 14 days to return it unopened. So, I want to be sure this PB G4 is operable before I break the seal on the Leopard package.
Therefore it's not so important that I clone everything from the original installation - just enough to see that the PB G4 boots and runs in Finder. If I can achieve that much, I will advance with Leopard 10.5 when it arrives.
    My *PROCESSOR SPEED* is 1.33GHz
    Other original specs:
    L2 Cache 512 KB
    Memory 512 MB
    Bus Speed 167 MHz
    Boot ROMV 4.8.3f1
    Memory Slot 256 MB DDR-SDRAM

  • Apple Hardware Test AHT

    Hi,
I would like to run the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) on my MacPro(2,1) and since I have upgraded from Panther through Leopard to Snow Leopard, I have misplaced the original installation disks that came with my Mac Pro. Is there anyway to run AHT without those original install disks? Is there somewhere to download the images that I need?
    TIA .... Jon

You will have to call AppleCare and arrange to purchase replacements. There are no alternative sources for the AHT for your Mac Pro.

  • Harware test - error 4sns/1/40000001:YDOR

I've got an iMac later 2006 (white model). I have experienced some crashes while imac stopping. I launched the harware test and the result was the error code in the subject. Anybody knows what does it mean?

Wonderful! Post back if you need further assistance.
And if you see any dialog of any kind whether running a test or not, make sure and write it down so we can get an idea of what's going on. Also, there might be a crash log available.
    Here's how to find that.
How to locate a crash log:
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Click "Go" in the menu, then select "Go to Folder".
    3. Copy and paste this path into the Finder dialog:
~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/
    4. Click the Go button.
    5. Finder opens the folder containing the crash log. Look for a the crash file with a date field that looks like the most recent.
You really need to boot from your install disk when the system experience crashes, not the AHT.
    Here's how to do that.
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger and later) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
Also, check to see how much available disk space there is. Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop, then click: Get Info. In the Get Info window, click the discovery triangle so it's facing down. You will see; Capacity and Available Make sure you have 10% available disk space, 15% is better. Not enough available drive space can cause issues like you are experiencing.

  • Apple Hardware Test error message: 4MEM/9/40000000: 0x79093f90 on 15" retina 2012

    hello.
I am having issues with my 15inch retina mac 2012. Some apps for example safari crash every once in a while. Some times i get the grey screen of death.
My configuration is: CTO. 2.6 GHz Intel core i7 with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 and 512GB flash memory.
I have recently replaced my screen as it was with burn in problems.
I tried to install Yosemite but failed several times. Just got the 10.9.5 Mavericks going again.
I ran the apple hardware test and got FAIL!
The error code read as follows: 4MEM/9/40000000: 0x79093f90
What do i do now? I am out of warranty and i can't upgrade to the new software.
I keep on having app crashes. I keep on sending reports to apple and there is no response.
Who should i hold responsible for hiding that there was a problem with my machine?
My warranty recently expired but i had the problems prior and i figured that if there was no response that maybe one day better software would fix app crashing.
Please suggest a course of action other than replacing main board with ram and cpu (too expensive).
    Thank you in advance
    Kris

Thank you for the quick reply

  • Where is Mountain Lion's Apple Hardware Test?

Hi. My Snow Leopard DVDs which are in good condition won't read anymore  after installing Lion and now Mountain Lion (the Superdrives' working properly as I can burn CDs and DVDs. The DVD does see it as blank with Untitled DVD but .iso Linux images for example boot when you restart it). Apple may have intentionally made the Superdrive not be able to read original disks to favor USB Flash drives and the Cloud I'm guessing which is fine by me coz' those can never be damaged physically or are less prone to physical damage.
But the Apple Hardware Test is in the Applications DVD of the Snow Leopard. How do I run Apple Hardware Test then on Mountain Lion? Any third-party app that goes beyond what Apple Hardware Test can do that you could recommend?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

I don't understand why your system is not recognizing the SL install disk - it should. The timing of any key combo with a restart is difficult with a wireless keyboard - unless the timing is perfect, it won't work. As suggested, try /borrow a USB keyboard.
Another thing to try is to insert the SL install disk; then go to Startup Disk Pane in System Preferences and see if your SL disk is listed in the choices. If it is, then select it and hit restart.
As for the question re. the bootable USB stick/DVD, I have not tried that, so I cannot say if that would work or not. Does your Mac have internet recovery or did you install the firmware for it as outlined here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4904
Having read all I could find about recovery, there is no mention of any Apple Hardware Test; not even here (which is quite comprehensive):
    http://pondini.org/OSX/RecoveryHD.html
The only things mentioned are the options in Disk Utility. So, unless you can boot from your SL install disk and get to the test that way, I am stumped. My suggestion would be to book an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar (if you are past the warranty) or call Apple support if you're still covered.
