  • I am a very brand new Mac user. So anyway, when I point to the apple and click on "About This Mac", it says the operating system is, "OS X Version 10.8.2. The question, is this "Mountain Lion", or is that additional software I need to download?

Yes 10.8.2 is the latest version of Mountain Lion. 10.7 was Lion and 10.6 was Snow Leopard.

  • How do i remove a failed apple hardware test from About this Mac?

I ran  Apple Hardware Test quicktest using the wrong disk/ version of AHT that did not support my motherboard.  Now under About this Mac .. more detail.. diagnostics it shows this failed test. i want it out of there. Thanks, jim

Long story .. but board is a different model than original.  ... bought water damage repair off of Ebay... got a call that it could not be repaired but they offered to replace the board for only 20$ more... so i let them do it. Original board was early 2008 2.4 GHZ Core Duo, new board is 2.2GHZ Core duo late 20007...  they put an older board in than was original. i'm not real happy but it works... I guess you get what you pay for.

I'm confused, do you want the serial no for a Mac ('About this Mac') or about your iPhone? If the former, the answer is on the page you came from:

    Greetings all,
I just got my SATA card and HD installed and now I have a question. I've been scrouning around in about this mac but can't find the drive info. Anybody have any ideas? It's there and it works but no info. For all I know this is typical but I'd appreciate any advice anyone has.

Some SATA controllers use the same chipset as their scsi counter parts.
That is where my Acard SATA controller shows up.

I should add that this has never been Jailbroken. I keep reading that a lot of times this is the case for a jail broken phone.
I have also gone through the not very helpfull steps on apples site to fix this.. It is not a security issue since i dont have an antivirus or any 3rd party software for my computer.

  • I am trying to connect to apple support and it keeps asking me to put in the SN of my MAC and when i do it says that the SN is invalid I am putting in the SN from under about this mac and it is the same as the one one the bottom of the MAC any ideas ?

Did you purchase this product direct from Apple online, in an Apple Store, or through a third-party authorized reseller? Or did you buy it from an original owner whose Applecare plan was supposed to be transitioned to a new owner, by them?
Do you have an original shipping carton the unit arrived in?
If the product was a retail 'open carton' purchase and no
back-track is possible, contact the reseller.
And if the computer had seen a major service with logic
board replaced, etc, it may have other issues with serial
number vs one they may have assigned it. Usually a
new logic board may have the SN flashed or if a unit
was determined to be a reman, a new # assigned. But
that would appear in System Profiler, if officially reman.
If you registered a product anywhere with Apple, it would show on a web page along with its serial numbers, going back several years, at this page after you log in there.
    https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action
A blue text with triangle See all products and services opens an Apple ID
sign-in window, then the page changes to show your items & info about them.
If you run the serial number through online Lookup, what appears?
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
Not sure if this helps, 'your product' should appear - if registered.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I Choose About This Mac from the Apple Menu.

I installed Maverick.  Appears to have been a big mistake.  So I went to Phone help and the want my serial number before they will talk to me.  So their site says that I should "Choose About This Mac from the Apple Menu."  I don't know where the Apple Menu is.  Help.

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

  • Memory Speed (MHz) missing in 'About This Mac'

    Hi
I'm using a Macbook Pro with 10.4.9 and all updates and I recently noticed that the memory speed is missing in the 'About This Mac' window.
    It's saying: Memory 1GB 0 MHz RAM.
Am I the only one with this problem or is this a bug?

  • About this Mac information is not right

Hello, i have a question about "about this mac" information. It isn`t right and maybe someone can help me out or has the same problem. As you can see on the picture, it says that i`ve uses 90 gb of the storage for programs. But i still have a free space of 81,04 gb of 120,47 gb. It doesn`t match. Does anyone have the same problem or has a solution? (sorry if I have made any mistakes, i`m still learning english )

Reindex Spotlight.  That may correct the problem.

  • HT1750 What about TWO different numbers in MacOs (about this mac window) and on the bottom of the foot of the iMac ???

What about TWO different serial numbers in macOs (about this mac window) and on the foot of the mac. This mac was not purchased as a refurbished nor has been sent for servicing on any time since purchasing...
The one in MacOs is answering : "This is not a valid Apple Product serial number" when i try to check the iMac 1TB Seagate Hard Drive Replacement Program...

You will need to check with Apple - might be a good idea to take it to a Genius Bar so they can see it for themselves (and the diagnosis is free).

  • About this Mac/Storage Question?

A few months ago, I upgraded my MacBook Pro 9,1 to two drives using OWC's Data Doubler. My main drive is a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. My intent was to use the SSD primarily for the OS and applications. My secondary drive is the stock Apple 500GB hard drive.
Today, I was checking the useable space of both drives and I noticed that my SSD is nearly out of room because of movies, photos, and other stuff. However, because I was concerned about my SSD filling up too fast, I moved all of my movies and photos to the secondary drive many months ago. For the life of me I cannot find the files the "About this Mac" dialog box is saying I have.
How can I locate the files so I can move them? Are there any utilities, Apple or otherwise, that allow me to see a breakdown of the files the "About This Mac" dialog box is indicating?
    Thanks!

If you are using iPhoto, iTunes, and iMovie, did you
change the library locations in the apps to the HDD?
If not, you will continue to add the data to your home
    directory locations.
Just check the Movies, Photos, and iTunes folders
    in your user directory.

  • "About This Mac" Storage Screen and Time Machine Question

    Hello,
I've been poking around in Lion a bit, and noticed something odd...
When you go to About This Mac >> More info >> Storage, my external hard drive that only has my Time Machine backup on it is displayed entirely as "other" in the file-type breakdown. Thusly, all utilized space is shown as yellow, as opposed to the purple that would designate it as "backup" information.
Is there something wrong with my Time Machine backup, or are other people experiencing this as well? It just seems strange that the results of the built-in backup application are not recognized as a backup by Lion.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks,
    -Kevin

Yes.  The purple Backups refers to (some of ) the storage used for Local snapshots (on laptops, see #30 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions), and, apparently, Versions.
There are many other misleading and inaccurate things there, too.
