Apple HDV "uncommon codec"?

I edit footage mostly from a Sony Z7 camera, shot in HD 25p onto Compact Flash cards. The FCP (sony) plugin imports this footage via "log and transfer" and turns it into AppleHDV and I use that codec for my timeline. My finished edits are exported as self-contained AppleHDV, ready to be transformed into whatever format is required.
I've been told the Apple HDV codec is an unusual codec (by Sorenson as it happens). I will go to Prores if I'm using other formats or doing color correction of any significance. In fact I prefer Prores in most ways but I cannot transcode to Prores via "log and transfer" so I tend to stick with Apple HDV as a matter of course.
Am I unusual in working this way?
Anyone else working with this codec - surely I'm not alone?
(for the record, it turns out in Sorenson Squeeze 7 there is a bug that makes horrid results when transcoding HDV to anything H.264 - I think thats worth taking note of!)
I'm just wondering if I'm weird

This is true, but it takes a heck of a lot longer to transcode all your footage to prores than to edit straight into HDV. I'm using a pretty speedy mac and I can't say the timeline renders have been any trouble.
I would consider ProRes if I could transcode during "log and transfer" but it seems there is no way to do this without transfering all clips to HDV first.
I could also just work with a ProRes timeline - but then I'm not sure how this would work much differently to exporting my master movie as ProRes from an HDV timeline (apart from every clip would be screaming for a render all the time during the edit.).
My thinking seems to tally with Ken Stone - that if your outputting to web/dvd formats and not doing much color correction or graphics you might as well as stay in HDV.
The problem with this idea is highlighted when you discover that the pricey compression software you bought to take care of all your compression needs wont transcode HDV to h.264 without making a right old mess of the picture - due to a bug involving this "unusual HDV codec".

  • HDV 720p30 codec(?)

I am using snapz pro x to capture machinima at 720p but the machine I am using to capture does not have Final Cut Pro on it and (hence?) does not have the Apple HDV 720p30 codec as an option to save. Where can I locate this for download, or on my machine so that I can keep all my source in the same format?

It isn't available outside of FCP. You will have to save as another format then convert later.

  • Apple HDV CODEC 1.4 is only made for Sony????

This is my question, since the apple hdv codec is support for XDCAM HD 422, I can't capture tape from my JVC PRO HD GY110U camera, this in FCP 6.0.3, but in FCP 6.0 I can capture from my jvc camera , but if I update to pro applications update 2008-01 I can't no capture from JVC camera or device. In FCP 6.03 , or in Final Cut with Apple HDV codec 1.4, when I tray to capture , the vtr it's ok in the capture window , but the capture window status say SEARCHING FOR MEDIA and no capture anything, another issue is the problem with the DV devices ( PREVIEW DISABBLE) same characteristics, vtr is ok but no capture anything. I hope that this problems will be resolve for the apple team. At this moment I can work with DV devices (24PA footage) and JVC pro hd(720P@24) devices well with this configuration:
    PowerPC G5 Dual, system 10.4.11, quicktime 7.4.5(25) (67), final cut pro 6.0.
MacBookPro Intel core duo, system 10.5.2, quicktime 7.4.0(92), final cut pro 6.0.2
The major problem is , if I need to work with xdcam ex footage I will be need update to fcp 6.0.3 'cause the apple hdv codec needed for the xdcam transfer is Apple hdv codec 1.4, that come with the FCP 6.0.3, but, if I updated for that , I can't capture HDV PRO HD footage , and, probably the problem with the DV devices starting again. Note that We work with Firewire to capture , I have not a HD CARD or AJA to capture. Note that some people report the same problem with Canon cameras.
Well , if any one report this problems: SEARCHING FOR MEDIA or Preview Disabled , I hope that my little report help in something.

  • Apple HDV codec and Out of Memory error on transferred project

    Hi,
I recently captured and have been editing fine with HDV footage on my iMac (surprisingly enough). My question is, I transfered the entire project to a collegue to edit on his new Powerbook(much faster than my machine) he gets two errors when he tries to open the sequence. 1. Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card. Then, 2 - Out of Memory. He can play the audio off the QT movies but the display is only white. I looked up the Movie info for the QT movies and mine is reading that it is Apple HDV codec. The exact same clip's Movie info on his Powerbook is reading only HDV? Can anybody help? I'm pretty perplexed on this one.
    Thanks!

It really would be useful if you included information like: FCP versions, QT versions, how the footage was captured and what codec was used?
Do you and he have matching versions of FCP? of QT?
If he doesn't have the codec you used to capture, then he t'aint gonna play the file. It is as simple as that.

  • HDV, Apple HDV codec or .m2t stream?

I am trying to figure out which would be better to do for HDV. Should I capture in FCP into the Apple HDV codec, or should I use DVHSCap to rip the .m2t file so that it is raw? Or, does these two come out to be the same quality?

It depends on your workflow. I think Apple Intermediate has a higher data rate. Check this out.

  • No settings for Apple Lossless Audio Codec found in Compressor

For archiving reasons I have to convert many audio files to Apple Lossless (ALAC). So I thought it would be easy using Compressor 4 and and a suitable droplet. I was astonished that here are only settings for the following audio formats: AAC, AC3, AIFF, CAF, MP3 and WAV.
No Apple Lossless Codec in the settings?
Does anyone know how to create ALAC files

    Thomas A. wrote:
This setting generates a QuickTime file with the extension .mov
Of course it does. Why would that be a problem? "Apple Lossless" is not a file format, it's a codec.
OK, if I change the extension manually to m4a it seems to be an ALAC file, but I am not sure if it a "correct" one in regard to the specifications.
There is no "ALAC" file format specification. What are you going to use the files for?
ALAC isn't specified at all. The audio codec is called "Apple Lossless", and it is a set of algorithms to encode audio data, and a specification for a bitstream of audio data encoded such. It can be put in various containers, the most common being MPEG-4 and Apple Quicktime, but nothing will stop you from using AVI, .mkv, .ogg or anything else as the container format.
If you're unhappy with Compressor, which only seems to offer the QuickTime container format for Apple Lossless-encoded audio, there might be other tools that will transfer it into another container while leaving the actual encoded data untouched.
Since the Apple Lossless codec is now free, mencoder might work, even for the encoding itself. I haven't checked MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, VLC or others, which might also offer such options.
Quick tests didn't yield any success, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work.
An alternative for lessless encoding is the "FLAC" (free lossless audio codec), which is usually stored in an ogg container file. I don't think Compressor offers that, although VLC does.
It seems that the exact thing you want is not readily available (i. e. mpeg-4 audio-only with Apple Lossless audio codec.)

  • Apple Pro Rez Codec with Logic Pro??

Has anyone used or seen the Apple Pro Rez codec (HD quicktime codec I believe?)? I will need to be working with this very soon, and while it's 23.98fps and I know Logic doesn't support that frame rate, I need to know if it can be used via a canpous FW box with Logic? Does it need to be exported? Etc?
Any thoughts or experiences anyone has would be greatly appreciated. thanks so much-
    Josh

I presume you will be producing music for picture(?).
I have not used it myself but I know that any movie encoded with it will be very cpu intensive. The codec was developed for video editors, to enable (practical) high quality hi-def editing. Most folk believe a new high-end macpro is the only computer that is capable of using this codec successfully, but that is with regard to video editing.
A movie encoded this way would be definately unsuitable to use alongside logic. There would be just too much CPU power going to the movie playback, leaving very little for logic.
Your best bet is to re-encode the movie with a more efficient codec. You'll see picture quality reduce but this should not be a problem.
Personally I would never use a codec thats any more demanding than DV. And DV is pushing things on lesser computers.
I suggest you get quicktime pro if you haven't got it yet and export the movie with a different codec. I have used the codec Photo-JPEG with great success. It's gentle on CPU resources and provides proper full frames - important if you are doing frame accurate sync.
The other way you could do it is to run the original movie on a second syncronized computer
Your BIG problem is that logic itself will NOT work with 23.98fps properly. From what I recall, this means Logic's timecode will not match the movie's (as it can't be set to 23.98fps). There really is not a fix for this other than getting "production" to allow for it and (somehow) provide movies with an alternative frame rate. To be honest this is one (very good) reason to use a different DAW.
I wish you luck. This is the sort of thing that could prove a nightmare!

  • Apple HDV Codec

    Hi,
I am using *Final Cut Pro 5.0.4* (FCP). I recently filmed a short film using 24p mode on a *Sony HVR V1U*. I now have *high-def 24p footage* which looks great on the LCD screen of my camera.
I thought I could import footage using the *Easy Setup HDV-1080i60* then use the Tools tab of FCP to reverse telecine. However, I get an error saying *"Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."*
So instead I used the Easy Setup *HDV AIC 1080i60* and then used Tools to reverse telecine the footage which gives poor looking footage (artifacts and ghosting).
    Questions:
    1. Is the HDV codec I am missing suppose to come with FCP 5?
    2. Is there anywhere to download the HDV codec I am missing?
    3. Is the poor quality of the AIC due to the compression of the codec or to possible operator error in not having all the capture/telecine/sequence settings correct?
    4. Can anyone point me to the direction of a solid workflow that could help my situtation?
    Thanks,
    Brian

I hate to tell you this, but there was the EXACT same issue with the Apple DVCPro50 codec. If it was captured on a MAC (say, in FCP) it could not be read on a PC. And how long has DV been around? This codec was never ported over for Windows users. I don't expect the HDV codec will either. If anyone can prove me wrong, please do so. This has been a MAJOR annoyance for those of us working as professionals who receive footage from all types of editing systems.

  • Media Manager not deleting unused media from HDV (intermediate codec) clips

I have a project which uses HDV footage which I captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I now have a bunch of clips that are very large in file size so I'd like to use the Media Manager to delete all the unused footage from the clips. I have tried countless different selections of sequences, clips in the browser, clips in a timeline etc but can't seem to get the Media Manager to show a smaller file size for the processed files based on 'Use Existing' with 'Delete unused media' option. The two size meters at the top always stay the same. Can the media manager trim HDV/Apple Intermediate Codec footage? If not is there a way to get rid of the footage that I haven't used? Thanks!
    Ben

I've never mastered MM. If I want a small section out of larger clip, I simply just export that section of the clip using 'current settings'.
Hope someone who has tamed the MM beast will step in here and offer you a better way...
    good luck.

  • HDV Quicktime Codec for PC

    Hi
I am in the middle of editing a project on FCP 5 and need to export part of it to a PC.
The footage is HDV 1080 50i and for speed I would prefer to keep it that way.
I'm having trouble finding the Quicktime codec to allow the footage to be palyed back on the PC, can anyone tell me where to find this???
    Thanks
    Ajay

I think you're talking about exporting to wmv. Flip4Mac Studio Pro HD is a good start. If you want better than that, check out Episode.

  • Apple avc-intra codec?

Hey there, I just got some quicktime .movs that will not open on my mac. The codec is Apple AVC-Intra. Final Cut wont recognize it, nor does quicktime. I'm running FCP 6.06 and Quicktime 10 on Snow Leopard. I've found a codec but only for older versions of FCP. I believe the footage was shot on an HVX300.
Usually when I get this codec, i think its from P2 cards, which log n transfer works with. But these are in quicktime movie form, like they have been transcoded already.

Sorry, that codec is only available with FCP 7. You will have to get the client to injest the footage as ProRes, or get the originals to you so that you can do the same.
I find it odd for people to choose that codec anyway, as FCP doesn't have sequence settings for that one...not even in FCP 7.

  • Quicktime unable to play movies from Apple site.  Codec?

    http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q86/limbodog/QTissue.jpg
Above is a screenshot of the "movie info" popup from QT. You can also see the movie running in the background.
So I tried to watch the 28 Weeks Later preview on the apple trailers site on my home PC. As you can see from the clicky above, all I get is a white screen with faint green outlines as though someone were shining an eleventy-billion candlepower spotlight on the set when it was being filmed. The sound works just fine tho'.
I perused what threads I could find here that might have covered the topic. It sounded like people felt it was a codec issue. The thread that I read suggested I get the codec info from the "movie info" popup and then go find a codec to replace it.
Well, I like to think I'm fairly computer savvy, but I don't see any info in there that helps me figure out what of the hundreds of codes out there is the one I need. I tried a few random attempts but they only made it worse (the movies didn't even attempt to load).
Anyone out there able to recommend a codec?
I did notice that I can watch it just fine here at work. Is there a way to figure out what codec I'm using here so I can get the same one at home?
Oh, the same problem occurs now on all iTunes videos.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

You're only missing some Microsoft "additions" that are supposed to improve your viewing experience.
You should take some time to search for updates to your video card drivers. Newer versions may things "right" and allow all the wonders of DirectX.
Like. I wonder why I need DirectX. I wonder what it really does for me. I wonder why I have so many troubles with simple things. I wonder why I just didn't buy a Mac.

  • Getting the HDV 1080i60 Codec

I need to play a video I got from iStockPhoto.com that is in native HDV 1080i60 format. I have Final Cut Express as well as QT Pro, but I can't play the file.
I've read through all the topics on this subject on the forums but haven't found an answer that's suitable or that works (such as using MPEG Streamclip).
The file will play in VLC... is there any way to convert it?

Haha... thanks guys. While I appreciate these answers maybe I should've quoted all the things I've read already.
Yes, I am missing the codec.
It's only available for FCP users. I have Final Cut Express.
My question is... does anyone know how to convert it?
    My answer is use VLC.
It's available online. It won't give you the high-quality of the HD, but it works.
