Apple I.D locked to my 4S

Hi guys, I factory reset my old iPhone 4S running iOS 7.1.2 and loaned it to someone. They attempted to create an Apple I.D but didn't confirm their email within a time slot. Now my 4S is locked to their Apple I.D and they cant remember their password OR the security info they created. Password reset doesn't work with the registered email, as they didn't confirm it within a certain time. I've tried resetting the device back to factory settings again, but the 3rd party icloud email still needs a password. Is there any way I can get support? Apple Customer service advised as I was the original owner, to make an appointment at the Apple store. The store told me they couldn't help as I didn't have my original receipt from four years ago, despite being told all I needed was I.D to confirm original ownership to have it unlocked. Genius bar at the Edinburgh store told me it was a unique situation and they wouldn't help me. What do I have to do. My carrier said they don't keep receipts that long either. I sent a mail to customer support a week ago, but that hasn't been replied to. I am giving up hope.

Resetting it back to factory defaults won't bypass activation lock.
Did your friend put a rescue email address on the account.
If your friend can't remember their password nor answers to their security questions then he/she could try contacting Support and see if they can reset the password for him/her : Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.
If they can't get the password reset then only Apple can potentially help you remove the phone from that account.

Only the owner who created the Apple ID activation lock can unlock it. If you don't know or cannot contact the prior owner, then the device is useless.
And, we can't unlock it nor can Apple.

HT3180 MY Apple TV has locked up

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

Depending on why it's been disabled you might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
Or you might need to contact Apple : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page
If it then works on your computer's iTunes but not your iPad then try logging out of your account on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Settings > iTunes & App Stores and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on it

Locked? Does it say it has been disabled?
You can log into appleid.apple.com and it might unlock it. If it doesnt, then it might be for security reasons and you need to contact Apple Support to get it unlocked by calling 1-800-MYAPPLE.
