Apple iBooks

Hi,
as we know apple iBooks becoming very  popular of ebooks/ibook
i was thinking if Cisco can publish free Documentations, guides ..etc on the iBooks store will be very handy to apple devices users in particular iPAD and iPhone
although a pdf document can be transferred to the ibook and read but having the actual document in the ibooks format and store i think will make significant difference
Thanks
Marwan

Hi Marwan
Thanks for the suggestion! We agree, and have begun to publish tech docs in epub format available from the Cisco site - here's an example:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/sw/upgrading/from1.4/to2.0/b_UpgradingCiscoUCSFrom1.4To2.0.html
Also, we are looking into providing docs in the iBooks store. If and when that happens, we'll let you know,
Thanks again, appreciate your feedback!

  • Problems previewing InDesign CS5.5 exported EPUBs in Apple iBooks, on an iOS device.

I have EPUB Creation problems when I use my InDesign CS 5.5 document from my first EPUB book, as a template to create my other two EPUB books.
My customer gave me a job that forced me to learn how to do EPUBs – and I'm still learning.  I created three books in Design CS 5.5, for fixed page PDF, with interactive table of contents and for exporting to a regular EPUB, with auto-reflow formatting and automated table of contents. These books were not created for print.
After I created the first one and successfully exported to an EPUB, that previewed fine in free Adobe Additions, I used the first InDesign CS 5.5 document as a template to create the other two publications.  These books were around a hundred pages, or less, with little or no placed jpeg images except on the three books' covers, so I did not create a Book.indb for each publication.  Each book is completed in single InDesign files with their own unique front cover art on their first page.
When my customer previewed the three books on his iPad, in iBooks, all three books show the cover of the first book, when you see them on the iBooks library shelf.  Then when you open them, you see the correct cover for that specific book and the correct interior pages.
When I open each InDesign file and open the File Information tabbed dialog, I have a different document title entered for each of the three different books.  When I export to EPUB, the EPUB Export Option dialog pops up and I have selected "Include Document Metadata."  I entered the Publisher name and a separate Unique Identifier for each book, when I export.
After I emailed the three EPUBs to my iPod Touch, all three showed up in my iBooks library but when you see them on the library shelf they have the first book's cover on all three.  So I have a redundant cover preview on the library bookshelf icons, in the iBooks app, running in Apple iOS.
I have two books by Elizabeth Castro about Creating EPUBs with InDesign.  I'm going to read them some more, especially the part about preparing your EPUB for Apple iBooks, on iOS.  But, I thought I would share my problem here to see if anyone has a solution for me.  Thanks.

I often end up answering my own questions but I will do so again, this time, so that others can learn.  When you are exporting to EPUB in InDesign CS 5.5, an EPUB Export Options diolog appears.  Under "EPUB Cover," select "Use Existing Image file" and choose the actual file that was used on on the first page of the InDesign document, for the new book's cover.
This feature can cause inbedded human error if you use a completed Indesign book as a template to create other books because even though you placed a new cover at the beginning of the book, the Export options still has the cover file selected for the previous book you worked on.
I actually got the answer to my problem with the InDesign Help Menu, when InDesign CS 5.5 is launched.

  • Bugs in Apple iBooks 5.0.1: PDF support & remaining pages

    Bugs in Apple iBooks 5.0.1:
    1) Adobe Acrobat PDF file format support:
With iOS 5.0.1 I am still faced with severe Acrobat PDF file format incompatibility problems with the Apple iBooks app.
Pictures in PDF documents partially disappear, characters are unreadable, smeared. This makes iBook unusable, as long as Apple does not fully support the Adobe PDF file format specification!
When do we get this update from Apple?
    2) Remaining pages in chapter calculation:
Apple iBooks does not correctly calculate the amount of remaining pages in the book chapter, in the footer area of iBooks. Just check it with recent S.Jobs book.
This needs to be fixed in iBooks as well.

  • ERROR ITMS-9000: "Unable to parse apple display options file: com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml" at Book (MZItmspBookPackage)

Hi, I'm En32, now trying to publish my first iBooks (epub).

Does anyone who can provide me a solution ?

Actually, I'd like to use fixed layout so I use com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml.
This ePub file looks good because I can open it with my iPad - iBooks, however iTunes publisher always rejects this.
    Any solutions ?

I was getting that error when I used OSX's default compress feature. I found a little utility called ePub Zip and used it to compress (zip) my ePubs and that did the trick. They then passed the validation. I got it here:

  • Can I get the Apple IBook Author on the New IPad

Will the ibook author be available for the new iPad? I've got a MacBook but its easier to use the iPad because of a disability.
I use an ibook creator on the iPad at the moment, but I would much prefer to use the Apple Ibook creator.
I haven't actually published anything yet and I'm thinking that it would be better to use the ibook author, so I can submit it straight to the ibook store.
Also, does anyone know if there are any proofreading and editing tools that I could use, as it is very expensive getting someone to do it for me. I had a quote of around £850 for a 100,000 word book!
Thank you. Any help will be most appreciated :)

Have you tried Book Creator for iPad? You can create an ePub file which is already standards-compliant for Apple's iBookstore, so you can publish it without too much hassle.

  • Which is better: Apple PowerBook G4, or Apple iBook G4?

I have been thinking of getting my own laptop. Should I get Apple PowerBook G4, or Apple iBook G4?

Allow me to suggest that you first research the games you wish to play and become thoroughly familiar with their system requirements, especially the requirements for video hardware. Then look at computer models with that in mind. If you don't understand the hardware jargon, find a friend locally who does and ask for help.
We see plenty of reports here from people buying the cheapest Mac notebook to save money, knowing full-well it has entry-level graphics hardware, and then get mad at Apple when some high-end game won't run because it needs more powerful gfx hardware. Don't join that club, please.
The Dell you linked will not meet the sysreqs for SWTOR as shipped. As it has the lower-performing Intel GMA integrated graphics, you'd have to increase RAM to 2GB and then it still may have to run at the lowest resolution settings. I suspect it will disappoint you.
    Observations:
---New games need newer computer models and that cost more.
---Few notebook computers--regardless of make--are good gaming computers. Heat is the enemy of any notebook and most high-end games run all the hardware at near-capacity, and the laptop get really hot.
Research, please, so you aren't disappointed.

  • What are the pixel dimensions for creating an Apple ibook book cover?

I'm trying to create a book cover for Apple ibooks, what are the pixel dimensions requirements?

    Thanks again.
Apple seems to have made it more confusing than it should be.
As an aside, the Apple documentation contradicts itself.
Cover art (also known as a marketing image or jacket) should be at least 1400 pixels along the smaller axis and must be a JPEG or PNG file in RGB Color mode.
This clearly says the shorter side must be at least 1400 pixels. The next sentence says this:
For an average trade paperback, this could be 400 x 1400 minimum size, as the books are generally taller than they are wide.
That doesn't make sense, seeing that the shorter side is supposed to be at least 1400 pixels, meaning it should say "1400 x 4900" for the same aspect ratio.
    ...I did notice this too.
So, if as you say, that the Cover Art and Cover image terms are the same and the 2 million limit does not apply, then it is unclear to me why Apple sent this message to me about cover file being rejected
"Action Required: Your book could not be delivered to the iBookstore.
The following images are larger than two million pixels and must be resized:
    Full ePub: Cover_xyz.jpg "
I'll probably need to have the cover file in epub and Cover Image for Asset in iTunes Producer be named differently (but be copies of the same file) so I can understand which one is the "problem" file.
And finally, why does Apple refer to Cover Art twice here and then end in last sentence with Cover Image if they are the same ( and if they are the same why not state "this cover image").
"Cover art (also known as a marketing image or jacket) should be at least 1400 pixels along the smaller axis and must be a JPEG or PNG file in RGB Color mode. For an average trade paperback, this could be 400 x 1400 minimum size, as the books are generally taller than they are wide. For best results, deliver the largest pixel dimensions possible. When possible, match cover art to the cover contained in the book file. The 2 million pixel maximum does not apply to the cover image".

  • HT4059 How can I mark a book as read or completed in Apple ibook?

How can I mark a book as read or completed in Apple ibook?

After researching this further, I have concluded that the update feature is working correctly. What I was expecting was that once the iPod would sync with my Mac, that the updating, including marking the podcast as read would take place at that point. In reality, this function does not take place until I click on "Update" in iTunes. During that process the various blue dots of those Podcasts listened to go away, and Podcasts that are outside the parameters of those I want to retain are deleted.
So, if indeed, as long as I have completed the entire Podcast, the update functions are working properly.

Take another look. A (nominal) 10 GB hard drive only has about 9.31 GB to begin with. The OS takes up some room, as do other applications.
Please check out how much space has been used and how much remains available.

  • How to download ebooks form the Apple iBooks Store without wifi?

    Hello!
I have an iPad but my current Internet network is not wireless. This means I can not just download eBooks from the Apple iBooks Store into my iPad through the iBooks Apps. How can I access the iBooks store to download eBooks on my laptop, which I will then transfer to my iPad? It is possible from other stores to just download the book on the laptop in ePub and then drag it onto iTunes to read it on the iPad, but I can't find how to do the same with the Apple iBooks Store.
    Thank you for your help!

Good question. I am unsure about this, though. Being as iBooks is solely an app within the app store, thus transferred to your device via the app store or iTunes. I opened iTunes, went to the store and could not find a tab for the bookstore. Perhaps in the future Apple will implement this. For now, I think you can only get there via the iBooks app on the iPad/iPhone/iPod. You can buy wireless routers at fairly reasonable these days. Maybe your cable/satellite provider has a wireless option for you? Most do these days. Is the laptop wireless ready?

  • Apple iBooks not formatted correct

i posted this to the wrong discussion gourp
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/25408887?ac_cid=op123456#25408887
The problem is my wife purchased some iBooks fromt the Apple iBook store and they are not formatted correct for the her iPad2. What is strange is they can be read on the MacBook Pro using 10.9.2 and the iPad was recently updated.
He books on the iPad go away and it takes a reboot to get them back. All of the older iBooks work.... the new ones are formattted wrong

    >My wife has an appointment at the Genius Bar this afternoon to discuss the nonstandard format being sold by iBooks.
B-I-N-G-O   The Genius Bar person FIXED it for her!
The problme was the Apple server sent her bad files.  The fix was to delete them from the iPad2 and download them again. She was not charged for the 2nd download  the three books all work perfect now.
What willl be interesting is she has the good copies on the iPad and the bad copies on hte MacBook Pro.  Will synce move the good books iTunes on the MBP or will it sync the bad books back tto the iPad. Stay tuned

really loved the apple/ itune as a music centre. music very pleasing as compared to it's rival.
look forward to your help.. TIA

Odd--it worked for me just now. They may have been down for a while or something.
The higher the RPM in a drive, the faster it is supposed to be. I installed the 5400 RPM Western Digital 120 GB drive in my iBook G4. Later I wished that I had installed the WD 250 GB drive, as the 120 is half full already with digitized vinyl. Now you can get a capacity up to 320 GB's from Western Digital.
You can pick whatever capacity and brand you think will best suit your needs. Most will be 5400 RPM. There may be some 7200RPM ones as well--I haven't really looked lately. ANY Parallel ATA notebook drive will work in your iBook. The Seagate you mentioned would be fine, and Seagate offers a 5 year warranty. I recommend looking at Newegg and OWC (Other World Computing) for drives, and not just at ifixit. Often Newegg and OWC have drive specials, and you can get a better deal on the one you like.
Again, post back for further tips, or search for tips posted by cornelius and spudnuty in this forum. In particular, Richard (spudnuty) recommends that you do NOT unplug the power button from its socket on the logic boar, but instead undo some tape and then use 3M blue tape to tape stuff up out of the way instead. I concur. It is not necessary to unplug this cable as ifixit tells you to in order to change out the hard drive, and there is a great risk that if you try, the socket will get ripped off of the logic board. Then you are really screwed.
You also want to use high quality tools and always use exactly the right size and type of screwdriver on these tiny screws.
If any more questions, do post back.
    Good luck!
