When I go to appleid.apple.com, select password reset and enter my Apple ID, why am I prompted to enter my DOB prior to selecting an authentication method?

NO. all apps are tied to the apple id that was used to purchase the app.

Is it possible that the thief initiated the email with just the iPod and maybe my name (as it is on the vehicle registration in my car). That's the only answer, if your email address was on the iPod the thief has it, everything on the iPod is open to him/her. But it would have to include your AppleID.
It was a coincidence.

Did you ask to have your Apple ID password reset? If not, it's a scam. Do not click on any of the links in the message, and delete the e-mail. It's also possible that an attacker is trying to gain access to your Apple ID. It would be wise to enable two-factor verification on your Apple ID:

HT201303 Random Apple id password resets - how to stop this?

A couple of months ago I started getting emails from Apple titled "How to reset your Apple Id password" and then more worryingly "Your Apple Id password has been reset". This happened several times over the next few days and I know this was not done by accident from me or my family because it was happening during the night UK time. I reported to Apple support and they were no help, in fact they deactivated my account until I told them to reactivate it again!
To me it seems like someone (or some system) is triggering the password reset online when trying to access my account.
After reporting it to Apple it stopped for a couple of months - now it started again! Several random resets during the night and day when I know no-one could be doing this from one of my devices.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any good ideas how to stop it? Any way to disable email authentication on the password reset and restrict to only the personal data questions?

HT5624 apple id password reset but not accepting when sign in

when came out from flight, switch on my Iphone5, it start asking to "Sign In to FaceTime" with my apple ID password.
I did reset the password through mail and start sign in. It is not working. What could be the reason?

Apple ID password reset issue

I forgot my Apple ID so requested they sent a password reset to my email address but I didn't recieve it.
The strange thing was that I got it emailed to my 2nd email address and not the one I have registered to this acc. How does it know my other email address?
The 2nd email addy is not in my account setting
Now I have just registered to this forum and it has sent confirmation to my registered address but sent the confirmation of the password reset to my unregistered email
What is happening?

Send an email to Apple - Support - Apple ID
And ask them to confirm the situation. At the same time if you ask, they will help you set up an different rescue email.

I am having trouble trying to reset my icloud password on my icloud account (***********) This is the only way that I can contact an apple expert. I am hoping someone from the apple support can help me with this.
1. When I tried to reset through sending an email, it said that it has already sent me an email. BUT WHERE? it did not tell me what email it used to send the reset email. I forgot what email address i linked it to.
2. I tried authenticating using the security question but when it asked for my birthday I placaed there **********. (which is my real date of birth) and it was saying that it is the wrong password.

Apple's Password Reset unsecure?

So basically, I have had to reset my password as it has been a very long time since i've had to log in to iTunes.
Anyway, I reset my password using the 'Secret question'....which was my mothers name. Secure? Hmmm, all I had to know was my email address (which was already entered for me) my DOB and my mothers name. To me, that sounds like anyone could reset your password and the details needed are easily available.
Having experienced this I feel myself wanting to not use the product anymore.
Anyone elses views?

Nothing requires that you put in your mother's real name, or use any other real information. Apple doesn't look it up, so you could select anything you wish - the name of your favorite actress, for instance - or add some special character, such as an exclamation point, in a non-obvious point (some number of charcters from the beginning, for instance). It doesn't matter as long as you can remember what you entered. That's the best way to handle any sort of "secret question" that asks for information someone could learn about you.

You can't re-use any password you've used in the past year. Done as a security precaution.

You need to get the previous Apple ID password reset. The only way to do that is to log onto Manage your Apple ID and click on Reset Password for the Apple ID you need to sign off of the device:

You will have to answer the Security Questions. If you do not know the answers, you will have to have Apple Support reset them for you:

Are you positive you're using the exact Apple ID to update these apps that was used to originally ontain them? You can verify such by right-clicking one the apps, in your iTunes library, & selecting "Get Info". This will show you the Apple ID used to originally obtain the app...does it match on your phone?

Exactly! The password I used to log on here and write my post I figured was the same Apple ID password I would use to reset my computer login password. But my computer isn't recognizing it as the correct password so it wont let me update my login password. I have 2 user accounts on my computer.
As far as the link you provided, I already looked to that for help earlier. It states:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, click the lock to unlock it, then provide an administrator name and password. Select a user, then click Reset Password.
I did these steps, but I don't remember my admin password. The question is: How do I reset my admin password so I can reset my log in password.
Is my admin password the same password I use to log onto this website to post questions? If so, like I said previously, I already reset that password and my computer isnt recognizing it.
