Apple ID Scam

Hello all,
I recently received an email notifying me that my App Store account had been frozen.  I had been having problems with my Apple ID (getting it to accept the password on different devices), so didn't think twice about taking steps to unfreezing the account.  That is, until the site prompted me to enter credit card information, which, starting to get suspicious, I did not do.
The initial email, which looks very similar to official Apple ID emails.
This page looks convincing, but you can't click on any of the links or tabs besides the form.  The following page asks for credit card name, number, and other information.
I tried to find an Apple Support email address to forward the initial email, but couldn't find an email option through the Support Center.  If Apple were to set up such an email address for reporting fraud, or, if it exists, making it more widely accessible, that would make reporting these scams much easier.
Hope this helps...do not fall for these scammers!

If you still have the email then you can forward it to Apple via this address : [email protected]
If you entered your account id and password, and if you haven't already done so, then you should change your password.

To make a long story short, my hard drive failed and for reasons not worth explaining I couldn't retrieve a backup. I didn't think it would be impossible to download my purchased items again because I have been able to download previously purchased iPod apps for fre after I deleted them. Also about a week before the failure I downloaded a music video that I deleted about a year ago for free. Now with that said, why are they charging me again?

This is not a "scam", any more that it's a "scam" if you lose all your CDs and the store/record company won't give you free copies to replace them. Officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications. It's your responsibility to make backup copies in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places. If your hard drive was erased and you don't have a backup of your purchased items, and don't have them on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks, videos and movies.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.

  • E-mail from Apple a scam?

Is there a phishing scheme out there with a click through to re-set password in apple.com?

Yes. Forward the email to [email protected] and then delete it.
If someone actually changes their Apple ID password, there will be an email from Apple about it, but it won't ask them to click on a link.

  • Apple tv scam

Go to any Apple store and the sales people will show you all the movies that you can rent using Apple TV.
The only problem is that for those listed as "In Theater" the only thing that you can really see is the trailer.
If Apple was honest the heading would list these icons as "trailer".
Apple TV is a good enough product that they don't need to fool customers to sell the product,
    Why do they do it?

and they are available to rent.

    that's not the rental list.
If Apple was honest the heading would list these icons as "trailer".
how would "trailer" make it better? surely "in theaters" is a more descriptive title.
Apple TV is a good enough product that they don't need to fool customers to sell the product,
sounds like it is a misunderstanding on your part rather then anyone fooling anybody.

  • Apple support scam

After my safari was frozen with a number to call 18446365433 to fix the virus claiming as apple support, I called. The technician accessed my computer for about 15 minutes or so. I revoked permission afterwards.  I realized that he was trying to sell the software from symantec.  Was the person able to access all my files on my computer? Should I be worried?

If you gave the person access for that amount of time, yes he could get any info on that machine.  It would be good to look at System Preferences, Users and Groups and make sure another user account was not created.  You may also want to consider reinstalling Mac OS X.  And go to Thomas Reed's site http://www.thesafemac.com and check his guidance on protecting yourself.
For the record, Apple NEVER contacts a user in that manner and never requests access to your machine from such a link.

  • I recieved a scam email from apple. then sent me the same email using my own email account. how do I report this to apple. can't find any contact details.

hi over the past month have received maybe 5 scam emails from apple.
I opened one the other day cause I thought well maybe it is from apple.
went through the steps and it was  amazed at how well they did at copying apple website. you could even go to the apple shop page from their page!
what set me off that it was fake was that I tried to open the other apple pages along the top and it wouldn't let me. so I opened my own apple page and logged in. and realised that they don't ask for your bank details in your Apple ID account.
anyways so now what has happened is I got an email today " from myself" with this same scam email. it is as if they have hacked my email account and sending me these emails. I want to report this to apple but am unable to find any contact details apart from call back options. does any one have any advice on this.

I've had that same exact issue, I received the first e-mail claiming to be from Apple last night (though over the past week I've received two other scam e-mails from different addresses claiming that my bank transactions have been aborted). It said it was from my own address, and I checked it closely to make sure it wasn't a spoof account but found it was indeed my own e-mail address. Five minutes ago I changed my password, and I have just now received a second e-mail exactly the same, still coming from my own account. My best guess at an explanation is that it may have been sent before I changed my password and there was just a delay in the message sending, resulting in it coming through after changing my password.
I've now forwarded the e-mail on as an attachment to the [email protected] address, however this still doesn't help me with regards to stopping these e-mails. It concerns me that even though I changed my password they still possibly have access to my account. I tried checking my account activity but as opening the mail app on my iPhone is considered as a log in and I check it almost twice an hour, it's impossible to tell which could possible be an intruder logging in.

  • Where do I forward an e-mail message that say it's from Apple, but appears to be a phishing scam?

I received an email with a reply address of [email protected]
Here is the body of the message:
"As we strive to secure your account, please be informed to upgrade to our latest security platform *****
Your privacy and protection is our concern.
    Apple Support"
However, the embedded link does not go to a secure Apple site.  Attempts to forward the e-mail to Apple get a reply stating that messages are not monitored.  Anyone know where I should send the e-mail?  TIA

Here's the Apple paper on the topic. It seems the scammers are hard at work. Your post is the second in a short while reporting a phishing scam.

  • HT201303 Today I received a fake iTunes receipt for $699.99. There was no money paid from my account - and no live links in the email. So this was a failed scam. Hopefully Apple is doing something about this?

Even though the links didn't send me to another site (as some have reported), and no money was taken from my acount, this is too close for comfort. Apple, please take action against this (apparently Rusian - at least that's where the links lead) invasion.
    Thanks!

That phishing scam has unfortunately shown up quite a bit lately.

  • I want Apple to know that an App I purchased is a scam. How can I get this through to them?

I have contacted the iTunes support line but they keep telling me to contact the dveloper of the app.
The problem I reported on the iTunes "Report a Problem" link is that the app developer in question doesn't exist anymore as far as I can tell. If you search for "Lottosuite - Powerball & Mega Miliions" on the app store and then click on the link for the developer web site it attempts to take you to http://www.lottosuiteapp.com/ which Safari says doesn't exist. If you try to click on the Support link it takes you to http://www.broadbentapps.com/cgi-sys/suspendedpage.cgi.
I don't want a refund (it was only 99¢ after all) but I don't want this developer to continue to rake in profits for an app that does not work and has no contact information available to the consumer. Apple states it isn't responsible for the quality of an app but I'm sure they would be upset if they realized they had a scam artist dealing through their App Store. Problem is no one will hear me out. They keep passing the buck and telling me to contact the developer. Duh, that is my problem man.
I have tried calling Apple but will not pay $29 to report a problem they should take care of themselves.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
This has become my mission and I will not rest until this developer becomes responsible for the apps it provides or is removed and blackballed by Apple.
    Frustrated,
    Rick
PS Thanks in advance for anyone steppoing forward to help.

If you have a Mac I would recommend that your install Printopia. Here is a link to it:
    http://www.ecamm.com/mac/printopia/
With Printopia, any printer that you can connect to your Mac will appear on your iPad as long as they are on the same wi-fi network. Try Printopia to see if that border goes away. Good luck!
