Apple iMac (G4-1.25GHz, 20-inch) Memory confusion

My iMac has 240mb Ram. I want to upgade it to its maximum. According to the handbook and Apple website this is 1024 mb.
My iMac appears to have only one slot so I assume I need to remove the 256mb card and insert a replacement 1024mb card.
Unfortunately I can't find a card that size for sale. The best I have found is 512mb. I sure there must be one around somewhere, could somebody point me towards it please?

I always recommend Crucial for RAM in the UK. You may get it slightly cheaper - but not from such a Mac friendly place with such a good returns policy. The snag with Crucial is that they'll only list for the User slots up to Apple's specs. But you can order it seperately (which I what I did to go to 1.5Gb RAM. The 1Gb SODIMM is really too expensive over this side of the world to be worth bothering so I stuck with 512Mb in the User slot.
If you do go for the Factory Slot as AxL suggests you can get both the PRAM battery and Thermal Paste from Maplin (Gloucester Rd, Bristol).

  • Does Apple sell memory for Apple iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (21.5-inch - DDR3) Late 2009 anymore?

I have a 21.5-inch, late 2009 iMac (Apple iMac 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo [21.5-inch - DDR3]) and I need more memory for it. Currently, I have the standard 4GB memory for it (2X2). I wanted to know if Apple makes memory for my model iMac anymore. Thanks!

Buy your ram from either Crucial http://www.crucial.com or OWC http://eshop.macsales.com.
Apple probably still sells ram for your iMac but you'll pay twice the prince and get less for it.

  • What's the right memory module for an iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch?

    Hello!
A new program I've recently bought requires me to expand my iMac's memory, which is currently 256 MB.
After searching the Apple Store web site, I think I've come to the conclusion that what I need is an Apple memory module called "512MB DDR266 SO-DIMM (PC2100), 200-pin". As I don't know any expert who can give me some advice, and as I'm no expert myself, could anyone please tell me if that's right?
    Thank you!
    iMac G4 Flat panel 15-inch   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Ciao e benvenuto alle discussioni di Apple.
There are actually 3 different types of user slot installable RAM for the iMac G4 models so you'll have to check what your processor speed is (Go to  Apple Menu > About this Mac > ):
    iMac G4 15" and 17" 700 or 800MHz, PC133 144pin SODIMM.
    iMac G4 17" 1GHz, PC2100 200pin SODIMM
    iMac G4 1GHz 15" or 1.25GHz 17"/20", PC2700 200pin SODIMM.
So although I can't tell you exactly what RAM you need I can tell you that if you have a 15" screen the PC2100 is wrong.
I'd advise using Crucial memory in Europe as the prices are amongst the best and they are Mac friendly. I wouldn't recommend Apple memory; it's overpriced. I also wouldn't advise buying a cheap brand as it could cause trouble.
    Here are the fitting instructions.

  • Apple iMac 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24-inch), how much ram?

How much RAm can i add into a Apple iMac 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (24-inch), anyone know?

And I do not see any specifications for a White iMac with a 24" screen that is 2.33GHz.
    But now I found it...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP28
You have what normally would have been a 2.16GHz model but with the made to order 2.33GHz upgrade. Memory is...
    1GB (2x512MB) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300), supports up to 3GB
officially. You have two slots, each supporting up to a 2GB RAM but officially Apple says 3Gigs is the max. Which is an odd number because normally I would expect to see something like 2Gig based on having 1G rams available at the time. However, since they spec 3GB that would imply that 2GB RAMs were around at the time, but they still specifically say the machine can only have 3GB (2GB + 1GB).
Many older systems can support more ram than their official specs due to larger RAMs being released after the support for testing new RAM was done. Apple specifically limiting you to a single 2GB RAM with the other having to be 1GB would seem to indicate there IS an issue with supporting a pair of 2GB rams.
So you can very safely go from 2GB to 3GB by replacing one of the 1Gig modules with a 2GB module. However I can't say for sure if it would work to go to 4GB or not.

  • Better Flash version for iMac G4 1.25GHz?

I have an iMac G4 (1.25GHz, 1GB RAM, 64MB VRAM, 20-inch) running 10.3.9 and would like to upgrade its operating system to 10.4.11. Even though Panther is considered an ancient OS, it still meets most of my needs; however, when it comes to online video content, many, if not most, web sites require Flash 10 and that's a problem since Flash 9 is currently installed on my system.
So, aside from upgrading to Tiger, should I also upgrade Flash to version 10? Is version 10 too much for my G4's configuration? Have people found version 9 to run smoother?
    Thanks.

With a better availability of quality browsers for Tiger 10.4.11, at least a few are
still being supported (compared to Panther 10.3.9) including Camino, Opera,
and Firefox, along with newer Adobe flash and shockwave plugin players, the
web experience can be a bit better with Tiger 10.4.11.
However the strengths of Tiger OS X 10.4 are in most everything compared to 10.3.
Your computer could also run Leopard OS X 10.5, yet Tiger works very well in those.
Do upgrade to Tiger, and if you can, make the new Tiger a completely new installation
where nothing Panther remains on the computer, and 'secure erase' the hard disk drive
makes for a better fully new installation; then build the new system from scratch.
I've gone the route(s) and found a completely new full installation of Tiger with NO
Panther 10.3 system bits on the hard disk drive, and the hard drive over-written with
zeros, partition mapped APM and reformatted to HFS+ was a great start (over.)
There are PPC Adobe Flash and Shockwave player plugins, and there are some there
in the Adobe site for Intel-based Mac running later or hardware specific OS X versions.
With Tiger, note & avoid those which are for Leopard 10.5 & later, w/ Intel processor Macs.
I have the latest supported Java versions, and Adobe Flash/Shockwave versions, and
the latest supported proven stable browser versions; and no issues in three G4 Tiger
running PPC computers; with Tiger at the last stage of development; and with the last
Combo update and last Security Update installed (at initial upgrade interval.)
In other user posts where they've cited Flash issues, and computer slowness, some of
them go on to other issues and do not return to the Flash problem; finding other reason
for general computer slowness and fixing that (in Tiger or newer OS versions.) So, after
I have outlined exact PPC Flash/Shockwave items, bits and cited source links, in those
instances (in Discussions) I am loath to find and re-type them again, perhaps to no avail.
The common theme with Flash/Shockwave players in Panther 10.3.9 is the system is
not supported for several years, so it is lacking in further development. Until about two
years ago, a more recent Flash or Shockwave player update, and to get & use the last
Camino browser (Mozilla/Camino) was a partial cure to web browsing issues in Panther.
You can still get the last player versions Panther could use, then remove the existing ones
in your computer (use uninstaller each plugin has with it) and install the last players; and
    then get the last supported Camino browser for Panther 10.3 from their old version links;
and probably hobble along online a few more months, at best, as web sites are updated
to the newest technologies and Adobe does not support new Panther plugin development.
While this user post says the computer is already at Tiger 10.4.11, and he considers Leopard
10.5.8 (it is a PPC G4 can may support it) the thrust initially was concerns about using newer
Flash and Quicktime versions. +Note my posts about updating Flash + Shockwave Player:+
    • http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13076736#13076736
Your iMac G4 1.25GHz 20" computer could probably support Leopard OS X 10.5(.8) but the
performance in some aspects of general use including graphics support may lag behind the
Tiger 10.4.11 since Leopard was built to support newer video/graphics and later technologies.
One of my G4s has Leopard, the other three have Tiger. And I prefer the older OS X 10.4.11,
even though it is older and lacks some kinds of support. It is stable and I can keep it running
for up to 180 days without a problem & without a restart; maybe even longer. (Because it can.)
So, Tiger is great version of OS X. Leopard 10.5.8 would give you more recent official support.
This means a more recent Security Update, later Java versions, newer Quicktime builds, later
browser builds, more recent Adobe Flash and Shockwave versions, and maybe a few more
years of compatibility with certain software versions; and so on.
Your computer can be upgraded to run 2048MB of RAM if both slots are upgraded to 1024MB.
The original official total was 512MB per RAM slot; so this replaced the as-shipped 256MB in
the factory installed location, if done, at least once. The iMac G4 1.25GHz Mac likes RAM a lot.
    If you or someone goes into the computer to upgrade the RAM, have the clock battery replaced;
also consider for the labor effort, to upgrade the hard disk drive to a larger capacity (PATA) unit.
Then you could partition the internal drive if needed, or have plenty of space for storage and also
for the OS X to have free space for it to run well.
There is no problem in upgrading the computer as far as it can go; unless you find excessive
costs in acquiring the necessary items to do so; unfortunately the all-in-one computers do not
have an upgrade path for main hardware items such as graphic processors or CPUs.
Beyond whatever that brings, there also are some great options at the Apple Store/Refurbished
pages online, for later hardware with newer software; with warranty & extended care available.
    Anyway, have fun...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Upgrading An Apple iMAC

I recently received an Apple IMAC from a friend who was having a clear out. It’s a G3 IMAC and I would guess is circa about 2000/2001 the type where the whole computer is integrated into a 15 inch CRT with a slot loading DVD at the front. As these old IMACs go it seems pretty decent: Power PC G3 450, 192 MB RAM, 20GB HDD, DVD ROM, 8 MB ATI Rage. Anyway despite owning a number of PCs I have never been a MAC user before and so am quite interested in using this little iMAC as an introduction to the MAC computing scene.
I have used the MAC OSX operating system both on actual MACs (at my university) and in the form of the PC port Flyakite which is very good but I would still like to run the real OS on actual MAC hardware.
From looking at the Apple website I have determined that the iMAC I have should be technically capable of running the latest OSX 10.4 (Tiger) with a RAM upgrade which I am in the process of ordering (single stick of 512 MB). Of course as the iMAC isn’t cutting edge any more it could take a good few minutes to boot up but I could live with that.
Anyway the first question is am I right in assuming I should be able to make OSX 10.4 run on this configuration or is there some problem I have overlooked?
The MAC came with the official apple keyboard, mouse and a USB extender but unfortunately no software discs. It does have OS9.1 installed which boots fine but there appears to be no software installed. My concern here is whether when installing OS10.4 it will be able to recognise the hardware properly or will it need drivers? This could be a problem as I don’t have them on installation discs and do not know where I would find them in the file structure of the installed OS9.1 or even if I could?
Lastly I am aware that my iMac can take PC100 168 pin RAM modules as used in older PCs. However I am not sure how many slots the iMac has. This isn't an issue yet as I am simply looking to replace one of the existing modules with a 512 MB one but in the future depending on how demanding and memory hungry OS10.4 is I may want to try to take the iMac all the way up to 1GB i.e. 2x 512 MB if it can support this configuration?
Any advice much appreciated, whilst I like to think I have good PC knowledge I am a total MAC novice so even stuff that seems fairly basic could be of help.
    Many Thanks
iMAC G3 450   Mac OS 9.1.x   G3 450 MHZ Power PC CPU, 192MB RAM, 20GB HDD, 8MB Rage Graphics, Slot DVD ROM

when you purchase the 10.4 upgrade discs their should be a disk for OS 9.2 (assuming 10.4 still supports classic)
Tiger (PPC) does support Classic, however, it's not included with the Retail version of Tiger (10.4) (at least not in the version I bought from Apple Store UK). I do know that OS9.2 was included on a seperate install disc alongside the Tiger install disc with some new Macs. (The Intel Macs don't support Classic)
And just for clarification -- Holding 'alt' (aka 'option') during start-up will list all available boot drives for you to choose. Holding 'c' down will boot from the internal optical drive.
I believe the issue here is that the firmware file can't be extracted.
returnof_theimac... can you find an application called Stuffit Extractor on your os9.1 system?
On a clean system it would be located: Macintosh HD > Applications (Mac OS 9) > Internet Utilities > Aladdin Folder > Stuffit Expander 6.0 - of course a previous user may have moved it (Applications can be located pretty much anywhere on Mac OS 9). If you can't find it download it here.
Once you've got Stuffit Expander open the firmware file. I suspect that the .bin firmware file has lost it's file association due to the fact that your created the file on a PC or that it can't find the Stuffit application on your hard disk.
Stuffit was included with most Macs in the OS9 years as the OS had no compresssion facilties. Since OS X extraction facilties are handled by the OS.
    Hope this helps

  • Upgrading imac g4 1.25 GHz RAM memory

I've seen in my imac manuals that memory has to be 3,3V, but usually memory specifications are 2,5V. Can I use 2,5V memories?
Crucial web page indicates CT327964 512MB memory to be used in my imac. I've seen other Crucial memories -a.e. CT6464X335- with exactly the same specifications. Can they be used?
Will 1 GB installed in the user slot be fully usable? Is dangerous to acces the factory memory slot?
Wich are reliable memory manufacturers in order not to have problems?
    Thanks!

I think you are worrying unnecessarily.
I have that same Crucial SODIMM in my iMac G4 1.25GHz.
Let the RAM designers do the worrying about details like voltages.
I believe this may be a cut-and-paste error in the Apple Manual. AFAIK 3.3volt RAM is all PC66 - PC133 (the latter being used in early iMac G4s). All the DDR RAM I can find is 2.5-2.8volts.
The bottom line is that Crucial are telling you that that RAM is suitable for your Mac and they provide a robust returns and warranty.

I currently use 64 bit Lightroom 3.0 MLP on my PC.  I justed ordered the new Apple iMac 27 inch and I'm trying to get confirmation as to whether or not my software will work on the iMac.  Some people say it will be fine and others said that I'll have to order an iMac that's reconfigured.  Help, does anyone know if the software has to be ordered special for iMacs?

    >The same serial number will work on Mac and/or Windows (max 2 activations).
The serial number will actually work on as many installations as you try it on. You would just be breaking the license agreement if you actually do that so I'd advise against that. This is different from the CS apps where the license is actually checked over the internet and you need to deactivate your old installation if you upgrade your computer which is always a pain. WIth Lightroom if you upgrade your computer, you can just wipe the old computer's harddisk and not be worried that your license number won't work on the new computer.

You would be better off with more memory, 2-4 GB would be important.

  • Trying to transfer CS5 from Vista to Apple Imac

    HI.
I purchased Photoshop CS5 in July 2010, I was using a Medion pc running Vista . On 30th may 2012 i phoned yourselves (case no.0208471813) to say that i was going to replace my failing computer with an Apple Imac & wanted to know if i could transfer my CS5 from Vista to Imac . I was told yes i could but it could only be done once, since then my computer has died & i have bought an Apple Imac. I phoned yourselves today to find out what i had to do to transfer CS5 over & to my amazement i was told that you could not do it because CS5 has been replaced with CS6. I am very disappointed that you didn't advise me when i made my first enquiry that this would not be possible once CS6 was available. So i am asking again is there any way that this programe can be transfered over as this was not a cheap item and i cannot afford to purchase CS6.  I have a Mac OSX  version 10.7.4. with 4GB memory.  I am sorry that this was such a long message . with regards  Gary Hampson

First of all, you are not addressing Adobe here.  We are all users just like you in these user-to-user forums.
The license is totally platform specific, and so is the program itself.  The Windows serial number is no good on a Mac version.  The binary itself only runs on a Windows box.
Before CS6 shipped, you could have arranged with Adobe customer service for what Adobe calls a "cross-grade" at a nominal cost by providing a letter of "proof of destruction" of your Windows copy and deactivating said Windows version.
CS5 is no longer being sold, so your only path is to get a "cross-grade" to CS6 by paying the upgrade price.
If you wish to pursue your case, you need to call Adobe on the phone.  There's no one here in this forum who can help you.
