Apple IMAP flagging unread messages as read

i'm experiencing a very frustrating problem that i can't seem to find an answer to. i'm using IMAP mail on three devices - a 24" imac, i7 15" macbook pro and iphone 3GS. all accounts are set up the same, as best i can tell (the iphone doesn't quite let you go as deep into the advanced settings).
some of my emails come in as "unread" and others (the majority) come in as "read" which is for obvious reasons problematic. i can't seem to find a pattern or reason this would be occurring. sometimes i'll only have one device on, and they still come through as read.
i really don't want to go back to POP mail, but i can't seem to figure this out. any help would be really appreciated.

That is a pretty broad statement, considering with any IMAP account, it is the server that marks a message as Read, albeit upon communication with the device and app that did the reading. The Inbox resides on the server with an IMAP account, and not on any device accessing it. I am not saying it is the fault of the server, but the server must be involved.
I don't use a smart phone to access them, but I have IMAP accounts, hosted for my domain, that are accessed by multiple computers, and which work correctly.
Can you set up additional email accounts with this domain, which are not accessed by the smart phone?

  • Apple Mail, iMap and marking messages as read

I am using Gmail's iMap server and Apple Mail on Leopard. When I mark a message as read on Apple Mail it gets marked on the server, but the other way round doesn't work i.e. if I mark a message as read on the server (i.e. running Gmail in a browser) it doesn't appear marked as read on my Mac. Is there something wrong here or is this how it is meant to work (it certainly works properly on my iPhone).

There is something wrong there all right. I am having the same problem.
In my home imac, I leave Mail open when I leave for work. During the day I may access gmail via the web interface, read and/or delete some e-mails, that sort of quite normal things. When I come home, Mail in the iMac has not detected any of the changes.
This used to work with Tiger without any problems, Mail simply saw all the changes as one would expect. Definite regression, and it would be nice to have it fixed somehow...

  • UNREAD MESSAGE BECOMING READ

    Hi Jay/All,
We have sun one messaging server installed on a single machine setup. As a part of testing we upgrade it to 6.2 and then did the rollback. We had only two subscriber provisioned on the system. One having 3 unread and ione read message and the second having 2 unread and 0 read message. Z
After the rollback everything was working fine just that the read message became unread. Can you pl. tell us the reason for the same? has snapshot to do anything with this. we changes the staus of teh messages just before doing the rollback.
For the rollback we are using doc 819-0062.pdf from SUN. There we used both stored -r & stored -R command as a precautionary measure. Since we are running the rollback steps through script.
the output of ./imsimta version before upgrade & after rollback is:-
Sun ONE Messaging Server 6.0 (built Oct 29 2003)
    libimta.so 6.0 (built 17:32:22, Oct 29 2003)

Email read information is stored in the store database and on disk in the per-folder store.usr file.
This is all described here : http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-4428/gebqq?a=view
For performance reasons the store.usr file on disk is not updated every-time a flag is changed - the update between the store.usr and the store database only occurs periodically during the per-user checkpoint.
If during the roll-back process you replaced the existing store database with an older version - one prior to the 'read' status having been changed by the user, AND the per-user checkpoint hadn't yet occurred, so the store.usr files also didn't contain the update... then yes I suppose read emails could become unread.
Although in the scheme of things if you had a 'disaster' large enough to justify a roll-back from 6.2 to 6.0, a few read emails becoming unread will be the least of your problems and not a huge inconvenience to the end-users.

    Shane.

  • Unread messages becoming 'read' before reading!

We're having an issue with a BlackBerry Z10 where messages come in marked as 'unread' (i.e. bold text with the yellow envelope) and then after a while (not sure exactly how long), they become 'read', even when they haven't been opened.
Obviously this makes it tricky to make sure that all messages are read.
Is there a setting that needs to be changed, or is this some kind of glitch?
    Any advice welcome!

  • 3.0+ imap Gmail Unread Message

Ever since the update to 3.0 my imap Gmail account on my iPhone shows that I have one unread message. It is blank, dated 12/31/00. I cannot open it or delete it, and it's always there. It wasn't fixed in any of the subsequent updates. I looked through Gmail threads and several people posted the same problem, but no solution. Any ideas?
I apologize if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find it.

I found this link on Gmail site. See if it works to meet your requirements:

  • How do I clear unread message in Apple Mail?

Using Apple Mail 6.6 on a MacBook Pro running OX X 10.8.5.  Our Exchange server is 2007/2010. Besides my Exchange mail, I have 2 Gmail accounts and one iCloud account in Apple Mail.  I have no issues with the Gmail or iCloud accounts.
Currently, I have 34 "unread" message from my Exchange account in Apple Mail.  On my iPhone, iPad and Outlook (PC), I have 0 unread messages.  When I filter Apple Mail for unread messages, there are none.  It's as if these are phantom unread messages.  I did a rebuild of the Exchange account in Apple Mail and I deleted and re-installed the Exhange Account in Apple Mail.  And still I am left with these mysterious 34 unread messages.
It is really annoying.  Any thoughts?

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Warning: The process may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. For reasonable-sized mailboxes, it should only take a few minutes.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Programmatically setting message state (Read/Unread)

    Hi,
I understand that Apple doesn't seem to care about people with more than just 1 POP account each with many messages. So to tackle that, I wanted to at least write a script or something to set my 600 unread messages as "read" between my 8 POP accounts. I can't find a sqlite db or any other place for that matter were these messages are stored. I was wondering if anybody knows how apple keeps track of what's read and what's not so I can modify it.
thanks in advance for your reply

More About Me and What I tried.

New to iPhone and programming for it (just traded in my curve for this 3G thing)
    running 2.1
did a `cd \ && find . -name "*.sqllitedb"` but ironically found every other db for sms and stuff except the one I need (for mail)
cd'ed into the mail folder but found a few RFC format emails (not 600 of them) -- when did `ls -lrt`, found that these files are too small to have anything (maybe i'm looking at the wrong thing).

I just had some time to look at this further and figured out the solution. Here it is for the next guy who is interested.
The sqlite db for your messages (and their unread count) is "Envelope Index" inside /private/var/mobile/Library/Mail/
run ".schema messages" and look at the triggers. That will tell you what sql statement to run. I'll 'try' to make this into an application||script if I get time, and share it later on Cydia but for now, the above solution is here for the next guy.
    *simple how to:*
there's a bit column for [messages] called [read], update and set to 1
there's a int column for [mailboxes] called [unread_count], set to 0
reboot device and run the mail once, then go back to Home (all your messages are read now)

  • No Syncing of Flagged Messages and Read Messages??

I use Mail to connect to several POP email accounts, where I also have several Smart Email Boxes setup. The message flags don't seem to be synced across the two computers. For example, if I flag a message on the G5 then sync it, my mini won't show the message as flagged when I sync on the mini.
...same goes for read messages. Even when my messages are read on my G5, they all appear as unread when I sync up on the mini. This has been a hassle, as I have to spend time flagging messages on each computer, and remembering which ones I have read previously.
Any suggestions? (would be so greatly appreciated).
    Andy T.

.Mac Sync does not synchronize mailbox content, which is what you appear to be expecting it to do. POP3 mailboxes aren't designed to be synchronized - you need to take a look at IMAP technology if you want your mail to be synchronized.

  • IMAP Deleted Messages AND Unread Messages

I've read quite a few threads about two seemingly persistent problems using Mail and IMAP servers: a) Messages deleted within Mail "reappear" in the client's in-box, and b) messages read (and marked as read -- no blue dot) "reappear" as unread messages (this latter problem occurs for me, even if moved to a folder on my IMAP account). I have to admit that I've gotten lost in the twists and turns of these discussions and I'm reluctant to start trying things that may make matters worse.
I've tried to extract the right things to do here -- and, so far, only have checked that I am indeed saving deleted messages on the server.
May I ask: In summary terms, are there a few standard fixes for making deleted messages go away and read messages stay that way? Thanks!!
    PB 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm using Mail 2.1 (752/752.2) talking to a Cyrus IMAP server running on the same machine. Messages are kept on the server. I have a GnuPG mail plugin. Ever since the last update of Mail I've had the problem of random "read" messages returning to the "unread" state, and not just in INBOX, but in other folders, all on the server. I've read them, did "Synchronize" and they soon show up as "unread" again. I've read them, quit Mail, restarted Mail, and they are "unread" again. Sounds like what other people are seeing.
So I wrote a program that talks directly to the IMAP server to see what it thinks about the "read" status. Sure enough, messages that have a sitcky "unread" state do not have the IMAP "\Seen" flag set. In other words Mail is not setting this flag for some reason. (I've check this several times, before and after Mail is supposed to mark a message "read," after quiting Mail, etc., and the "\Seen" flag is never set.)
If I use my prober program to manually set the "\Seen" flag on a message, then it stays "read." That message never again pops to the the "unread" state; however, random new messages get stuck in the "unread" state. So far the only way I have been able to mark these sticky messages as "read" is to talk directly to the IMAP server.
I believe this strongly indicates the problem lies in Mail itself and not the IMAP server. I believe there was some regression with this new version of Mail because I've never had the problem before. To conclusively prove Mail is at fault, though, I would have to eavesdrop on the communication between Mail and IMAP.

    1. You can't delete the mail app as its a preintalled Apple App.
    2.  Trying to delete it will do nothing to the message count.
Its better to not answer if you are not sure of your answers., and let someone else answer instead.
    Anyway atgreen:
Like Nathan-D suggests, Look in your other folders, like Junk or Spam  for unread emails there.
In the Mailboxes list scroll down to the list of accounts tap on each one to see all the folders and go through them to make sure there are no undread emails there.
He is sure of his answer. Reread the steps, he isn't suggesting to delete the app, but to close it. See the first step, "double click the home button", this brings up the open apps at the bottom. Holding on the mail app brings up the "-" to close Mail. If he were trying to delete an app, you get an "x", but Apple apps don't even show that "x".
Closing the app will cause it to reset the notification flags in the app, that is why it was suggested. If that doesn't work, then he may need to reset the iPad.
Your and Nathan-D's suggestion to check for unread messages in other folders is also valid, but it is only the inboxes that are reflected on the icon.

  • Why "Bulk Mail" foder does not display number of unread messages unless I click the folder (Yahoo mail through IMAP)?

Yahoo mail account's "Spam" folder (as viewed through "Yahoo mail" web interface) is displayed in Thunderbird as "Bulk Mail" (IMAP). Looking at the account's foders in Thunderbird I see the number of unread messages in each folder. "Bulk Mail" appears always to be empty. If I click the "Bulk Mail" folder, then magically messages appear in message list, and the number of unread messages is displayed next to folder name, like in all other folders of this account.
Why I need to touch the "Bulk Mail" folder in order to see the number of messages in it?
Yahoo deletes messages from this folder at certain periods. I'm in danger of loosing messages unless I remember to touch all of my Yahoo account's Bulk Mail folders in Thunderbird.
How I can get "Bulk Mail" folder to show the number of unread messages like all other folders of the same account do?
    Thunderbird 24.6.0, Windows 7 Enterprise (Sp1)
    pekka

I don't use IMAP in Thunderbird, so I can't provide step-by-step instructions, however, other e-mail programs have settings for whether or not to synchronize each individual folder on a schedule or using push IMAP (vs when clicked). If Thunderbird has those settings, I would expect them to appear in the folder properties or account settings. Perhaps this will be helpful, but I don't know if you've already done some digging like this or not.
FYI, a quick search brought me to this page:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/configuration-options-folders
One item listed in that page is this:
Configure IMAP folders, connections and namespaces
    Menu location: Tools | Account Settings | <account name> | Server Settings | Advanced
Perhaps that would be a good place to start since it does mention IMAP folder connections, but folder properties still might be an easier place to peek first, just in case. For that, the site lists this:
Configure folder properties (IMAP folders only)
Menu location: Edit | Folder Properties | General Information
However, I think you could right-click on the "Bulk Mail" folder and hit properties in the pop-up menu.

I have this problem using two different IMAP servers (dovecot-imapd and SunONE.) Basically Mail keeps "losing track" of which messages have been read already. Messages I read and/or reply keep getting marked as unread. If I wait around long enough (or quit and restart Mail) ALL of my messages received since migrating to the MacBook Pro will appear unread. This did not happen with my PowerBook G4 – I'm thinking something is wrong with the Intel build of Mail.

Do you have "automatically synchronize changed

Oddly enough, one of them had it checked, and the other did not. Both evidenced the same behavior though.
In addition, have you used the rebuild mailboxes

I'll do that now, and see what happens.
