Apple iTunes overcharging on sales tax.

I reside in Tennessee where sales tax is 9.25%.  I am being charged an extra 2 cents or so in tax on an average album purchase.
Here is the most recent example.  I bought Ryan Adam's iTunes Session album at the price of $7.99.
Here's the math:
$7.99 X 1.0925 = $8.729, or, rounded up, $8.73.
iTunes charged me $8.75. Why?  It's an extra 2 cents and is an overcharge, no matter the small amount. I've looked at my account and this has happened on every iTunes purchase for at least 5 months.  I didn't check back any farther, as obviously something is wrong, unless there is an additional tax I am not aware of.
Can anyone explain this?  I don't want to think the worst about Apple, but it's hard not to calculate that 2 cents multiplied by millions is a lot of money. Hopefully, there's another explanation.

I recently noticed the overcharge on Memphis sales tax recently when I bought books as gifts.  I contacted customer service and got the "check with your state for the rate" answer.  I work in sales tax and know the rate...I have made MANY online purchases that were taxed correctly.  It's not that much $$ for one customer, but if you put it all together it would be material.  AND if they remit the "correct" amount and COLLECT the "incorrect" amount, which is the way most tax programs work (sales x rate), they may be making a little extra $$ on collecting a few cents on transactions.  Frustrating.

  • ITunes charges incorrect sales tax

Does iTunes and Apple in general charge you the wrong tax rate? They do for me!
Apple does not have a sales transaction system which recognizes correct sales tax rates. In my case they lump me into a city for sales tax purposes but I live in an unincorporated area (which does have a unique zip+4 number) but they charge me the city sales tax rate. At least when I purchase hardware from Apple to be delivered to our home the phone sales people will adjust the sale price accordingly since they cannot modify the sales tax. But with iTunes there is no hope. I have gotten some response in the past from Apple but nothing ever happens. Now Apple does not even respond. Thus I've given up buying music from Apple.
Apple management has decided they don't want to treat their customers fairly, at least with respect to billing them properly through iTunes.
Note that car dealers and any business that delivers to our house knows the correct sales tax to charege.
If you have this same issue please write to Apple. Perhaps one day they will implement a proper transaction system.

  • Does the online Apple store observe sales tax holidays?

(I know this is a bit off-topic, but there isn't a more suitable category that I could find)
Does anyone know if the online Apple store respects state sales tax holidays, or does it charge sales tax regardless?

I try not to use telephones if I can possibly help it.
The online store does indeed respect state sales tax holidays:

  • Sales Tax for the new iMac

I'm sorry, I know this is probably not the right place to pose a question about sales tax, but I could not find the right category =/
If you think I should re-write this question in another category, I will
So, my situation is: I live in Brazil, and I have a friend who's going to the US in October. She is going to buy the new iMac for me.
I read on Apple's website that Sales Tax may apply. In which cases? If my friend goes to the retail store (instead of ordering it's shipment), does she has to pay this tax? how much is it normally? Does it depend on the State?
(And I only ask this because it's really not clear at apple.com and I don't know how sales tax work in the US...)
so thank you for your help!

Your question is really inappropriate to the Apple Discussions. The AD is a user-to-user forum for helping with technical problems and questions for Apple products. Sales taxes is certainly not one of those topics.
However, to answer your question. If your friend purchases a Mac in the Apple store or if you purchase it via the online store taxes will be charged. Sales taxes in the US are typically between 6-8 percent of the purchase cost depending upon the state in which it is purchased. There are a few states that do not levy sales taxes such as Nevada and Montana.
In addition when your friend takes the computer into your country you will likely be charged with import duties and taxes as well. If it's your expectation that this ploy will save you some money I wouldn't count on it.

  • APO shipping and Sales Taxes

I am stationed overseas, as are many service men and women. Unfortunately, we are unable to purchase iPhones from the PX/BX over in other countries. We have to purchase from Apple, and then ship to a forwarding company. On top of this, we are charged sales tax based upon the forwarding company address.
Why won't Apple just use the Post Office and ship to APO? We will pay the postage fees! Why won't Apple at least remove sales tax since the item is being transferred through an intermediary?

    dear aakash,
    can u explain it detallyy..
    and how to configure it.??
    regards,
    shashi.

    from Byron.

You can indeed burn moves and shows from the iTunes Store to a data DVD (via Finder or other software) for backup purposes, which is I believe what Byron is asking about (though I can't be sure). You just can't burn them to a video DVD to be played in a standard DVD player.
Well, I'm not sure about that. Having just re-read the terms, it appears that you may re-download content, and that you can burn songs, but this appears to not include videos (unless it is iTunes Plus content):
(iv) You shall be authorized to burn an audio playlist up to seven times.
    (v) You shall not be entitled to burn video iTunes Products or ringtone iTunes Products.
(vi) iTunes Plus Products do not contain security technology that limits your usage of such products, and Usage Rules (ii) – (v) do not apply to iTunes Plus Products. You may copy, store, and burn iTunes Plus Products as reasonably necessary for personal, noncommercial use.
Reading further, then there is this:
    (ix) Content Rentals
    (a) Content rentals are viewable on only one device at a time. You must be connected to the iTunes Service when moving rentals, and you may do so only between your computer and other compatible devices. Content rented using your Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) may not be moved. If you move a rental to a compatible device and then use the iTunes Service to restore that device, or choose Settings > Reset > Erase all content and settings on that device, the rental will be permanently deleted.
    (b) You have thirty (30) days after downloading a rental to begin viewing. Once you begin viewing, you have twenty-four (24) hours to finish viewing a movie, and forty-eight (48) hours to finish viewing a TV show. Stopping, pausing, or restarting a rental does not extend the available time for viewing.
Some iTunes Products, including but not limited to Content rentals, may be downloaded only once and cannot be replaced if lost for any reason. It is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage iTunes Products once downloaded, and you may wish to back them up.
Even after years of deciphering contracts and the sometimes rather complex content, I find this a bit confusing and I'd be checking with Apple to make sure I'm not doing anything I shouldn't be.

  • Apple iTunes Store vanishing in iTunes 9.1.1 in Windows 7 (64bit)

I have iTunes 9.1.1 installed and everything is fine except when I try to access "iTunes Store" I get "Accessing iTunes Store" (with the stripey progress bar) then it fleetingly (for a fraction of a second) displays thee Apple iTunes Store, but then the screen goes blank, ie the display goes blank.

  • Setting Sales Tax for in State ONLY??

What we have here is a failure to communicate...  Either it is a language problem with support or they can't explain the feature.
All the answers I 'm getting are NOT answers to the question I'm asking. And the document is not clear either.
I have clients who sell products who ONLY need to charge sales tax to customers in the same state (PA)  but BC is charging 6% to all customers regardless of location.  We realize now that we should not have set the tax on individual products to PA 6%  (although that is VERY counterintuitive), and we set up our tax code for the USA with all states being zero and pa being 6%.   Tech cannot tell me how I should be setting taxes globally for products. IT is almost as if this feature does not exist:
ME:   No,    This is not acceptable nor does it make any sense.
In the USA, for most companies,  we only charge sales tax to In state customers, not out of state customers.  Therefore we need to be able to set up a global tax NOT on the product and NOT on the Country, but upon the state ONLY.
If this option is not available, it is a worthless system.

There are two proper ways to add tax.
    1. Add tax to shipping options: In this case, you create tax codes and shipping options too. Now, you add tax code to the shipping option as per the customer's destination country. Add a shipping option, and select the tax code in the shipping option. This is the more widely used method of applying tax. From what I had seen, you didn't create any shipping options yet, hence the confusion.
    2. Add tax directly to the product: This is what you had done. This will, as you have already mentioned, apply the tax to the product, irrespective of the customer's address details.
    Hope this clarifies the situation.
    Cheers.
You can set it as not applicable. If you apply tax to the product level, it will apply the tax to all orders for that product. To apply tax to all orders regardless of the visitor's location, you can apply tax at a product level. Check this document:http://helpx.adobe.com/business-catalyst/partner/tax-codes.html

I am unclear on the sales tax situation for online orders of iPads.
Will I be charged sales tax if I order an iPad thru the Apple online store?
If online orders are sales tax free why are there so may people lining up at stores to buy iPads (and other products for that matter) which will end up more expensive?

Whether or not Apple (or any online merchant) collects and remits sales tax depends to a large extent on whether they have a retail presence in the state (in this case, if there are Apple Stores there). Another factor is whether the company does enough online business there that the state chooses to expend the resources to collect sales taxes even without a retail presence -Amazon.com, for instance, collects sales tax for sales in Tennessee because they do tons of business here and because many of their distributors and shippers use warehouses here which Tennessee has indicated a willingness to seize in lieu of the tax dollars. Consequently Amazon caved in and now collects taxes at the time of sale. Apple already has retail stores here so they collected taxes on my order at the time I placed it.

  • How to refund Sales Tax in 2007 A

What is the best way to refund Sales Tax to a customer that was overcharged in SAP 2007A.  They have not paid the tax yet but I need to give them a Credit memo for the tax.
    Thanks,
    Don Shields

    Hi
I think one of the way is to create a Dummy invoice (Service invoice )and do credit memo .
Test it in your environment and see if meets your desired requirement .
Best way can be decided only by you as you need to feel comfortable with your business rules and policies .
    Hope this helps

  • IPhone 4S Sales tax on out of state purchase? Time for a road trip?

In California (and I believe two other states, if not more) the sales tax on an iPhone is calculated on the "retail" price of the phone. This amounts to about $50-$60, much higher than the sales tax on the subsidized price of $199 for the 16gb model (about $20).
If I were to purchase the phone in another state from an AT&T/Verizon store, or one of their "authorized resellers" in person, would I pay the tax for the state I am purchasing the phone in, or would I have to pay California's higher tax on the unsubsidized "retail" price?
I realize that the online Apple Store charges tax based on the phone's shipping address.
Do the stores base the sales tax on where you are purchasing the phone (in person), or on the billing or service address (California, in my case)?
Anyone who has actually done this (an out of state purchase - in person, not on-line)? What was your sales tax amount?

No, this is not a first time phone. Have been with Verizon since 2000, and am happy so far. Need to get two phones to replace some dinosaurs that we have now.
Haven't decided on Verizon or AT&T yet. Verizon=Better coverage. AT&T=Lower plan rate. Will not even consider Sprint.
It's not a carrier issue. I'm just trying to save maybe $60 on sales tax for the two phones. (Yep - I'm a cheap old geezer!)
I will check on the different states and their sales tax policies on unsubsidized/subsidized phones.

  • Do iPhone App developers have to pay sales tax?

    Hello,
I am an iPhone App developer in the United States. I would like to know who reports sales tax - Apple or a developer?
    Thank you!

Not a W-2, but maybe a 1099 (miscellaneous income) - are App Store applications considered merchandise or a service?
