Apple keyboard software overrides QuarkXpress function keys

HELP
I recently installed Tiger 10.4.11 update, and the apple keyboard software update 1.2 for use with a new Apple keyboard. However, in QuarkXpress 6.5, now the function keys F7 and up do not work in Quark — presumably because they are being used by the keyboard software. I presumed when an application was running (e.g., Quark) IT would override. I need my F7 key in Quark!
Is there a way to make the application take precedence? Or, is there a way to disable or uninstall the apple keyboard software? The function keys for use with itunes and dashboard, etc. are far less important to me than having the function keys available in software I use daily for work.
Thanks so much!
jelcroy

Thanks for the reply — I tried that, which seemed the obvious solution, but I cannot find the place to change that — it is NOT in the keyboard shortcut list in the keyboard preferences.
The F7 thru F9 keys on the new keyboard control playback, which I presume to be itunes and\or DVD player, judging from the icons on those keys.
Haven't found a place to disable them. In adding apps in the keyboard shortcuts, which I tried, it doesn't allow for the key combinations needed to restore the Quark functionality I am missing since the keyboard software update, which I wish I hadn't done. There's not enough functionality in the keyboard that isn't available in a myriad of other ways to make it worthwhile, especially when it means giving up the convenience if those commands in Quark, which is where I spend the majority of my time.
Anyone have other ideas? Can the Apple keyboard software be uninstalled or disabled?
BTW, the control F1 command to turn off keyboard access doesn't work either.

hi all i wonder if there is a way to to override pressing function keys(f1,f3,f6,f7,....) in adf page for all of the page not just for an input text .
in another way can i make a client listener for a <f:view> or <af:document> so the javascript function will be called when i preses any button in keyboard without focusing in inputtext or a command button

    Hi,
the problem is that keyboard events are only raised from input components. client listeners can only added to ADF Faces components and af:document does not accept keyboard entries. However, I tried
af:document > panelStrechtLayout (center facet) > panelGroupLayout (scroll) and assigned a clientListener. At runtime has the desired effect

Ipad 2 doesn't recognise wireless keyboard apart from the function keys this has only just occurred . Previously no issue at all.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • New Slim Apple Keyboard Software loaded-but where do I access this?

OK I loaded the 1.2 update (about 35 mb) "New Slim Keyboard" software, but not that I've rebooted, how do I actually access the features of that software? -- And function keys F17, F18 and F19 are new-- how to use them etc. etc.-- what is this software I installed actually doing that one cannot do in "Keyboard Shortcuts" in the Keyboard & Mouse Preference panel??
    Thanks for any comments here.
    Steve Sunday 16 December 2007

Thanks for your reply! However, I don't see any change in the "Keyboard & Mouse" preference panel after having installed the "Slim Keyboard" update. I don't see any additional "options" that refer to the keyboard's additional Function keys etc. (Perhaps I need "Leopard" to use some of these?)
Also, with this new keyboard, hitting the fn key then F4 brings up the WIDGETS, but F12 still does this-- I'm not sure of the advantage of having 2 key commands to do the same thing...
Also: In System 7 (and maybe 8 and 9 too), F3 was copy and F4 was paste-- those were great-- can I get those back with this keyboard (instead of cmd-C and cmd-V)??
Thanks for any additional comments here and if there is an instruction manual for the new keyboard / software-- j

  • Apple Keyboard used on MacBook: Some keys not working

    Hello,
I use an Apple Keyboard (USB-connection, aluminium, Model No.: A1243, 2007) for typing longer texts when my MacBook is connected to an external monitor.
Since I have re-installed the OS X software on my MacBook because I had to replace the hard drive, the Keyboard doesn't work successful. Some keys just don't work; The letters cannot be typed. (Affected keys: "8", "I", "K", "," and number pad keys "7", "4", "1")
I installed all software updates for keyboards that could be found on the apple support webpages.
The keyboard istelf doesn't show any defects for me.
What can I do to solve the provlem? Or to get to know if it's a software-based problem? I want to exclude all possible software reasons.. In a worst case I have to replace the keyboard, I think. But it always worked fine and a new one can be expensive.
    Thank you for all hints!

have you tried command-option and the keys? or command and one of the keys? if so did it work??? if not, try going into the finder, and go to preferences file, but did not know which one would be the culprit. The strategy I adopted, which took me back to my System 9 (and earlier) days, was to go into the Library folder of the affected user account, open up the Preferences folder (after backing it up elsewhere on the hard drive), and take out a small number of files (.plist files, etc) at a time, log out then back in and note any changes. The theory is that if there were any changes then it is most likely that the offending file was in the last group to be removed. You would then replace those files one at a time until the problem returned. Eventually I found the culprit. To my surprise it was the com.apple.loginwindow.plist file. Removing that cured things completely.
Why that particular preference file affected that particular key is beyond me, but it fixed the problem!

  • Wireless keyboard stucks on fn   function key

    Hello Guys,
i bought a brand-new Apple Wireless Keyboard and its working very smoothly, but i have some problems with the fn + function keys Combo. I'm using Mac OS X 10.7.3 and when i press FN + F11 (for example, but it's concerning all function keys), it should show me the Desktop. But unfortunately only Volume gets louder till i press it again. I have this problem only the first time pressing the keys. For all following combos its working till i dont press any key for some seconds.
Any others having this problem too?
    Greetings and thanks for help,
    Patrick

I returned the Keyboard to the Reseller and got a new one: it works perfect now! Can be closed.

  • IPad Mini paired with bluetooth keyboard - periodically losing all Function keys

    iPad Mini 6.0.2 (10A550)
Model MD529LL (32 gig wifi only)
    Apple Bluetooth Keyboard (Model A1314)
I'm listening to the Mini, unplugged from power, with headphones, and the bluetooth keyboard connected.  When playing music using either the IOS Music app, or Pandora, I am periodically losing the keyboard Function keys (brightness, track back, play/pause, track forward, mute, and volume up and down).  Yet all other keyboard functions keep working -- I'm able to type email messages even though the Function keys are not working.
I have not found the exact combination of activities that causes the Function keys to stop working.  I've tried using only Pandora, or only Music, letting the screen sleep, wake it back up with different methods.  I can't break it at will, but eventually it does stop working.  A power off and reboot of the iPad restores functionality.
Has anyone seen a bug of this type reported yet?

    this on : http://store.apple.com/fr/product/MB110F/A#overview
as it seems i have to download a software to update and replace my wireless german keyboard(lol)
but i dont find anything to download to update
    anyone can show me path???
    thx in advance !

What indicated to you that an update was required?
To ensure your Mac has all the latest updates, simply click the Apple Logo in the upper left corner of your screen, and select "Software Update" from the menu.
I recommend Repairing Permissions both before and after performing Software Updates.

  • Apple Keyboard Software?

I just purchased an Apple keyboard to use with my new MacBook Pro. The keyboard is the one with an aluminum frame; it’s wired; and it has the numeric keypad. The part number is MB110LL/A. The setup instructions say to download the latest keyboard software, but when I look at available keyboard software downloads, they all seem to apply to the keyboards without the numeric keypad, or at least that what the picture next to each listed download shows. Is there a keyboard software download for this keyboard? Do I even need to download the software? I was surprised to see a setup instruction that said to do this. Thanks.

    Great news, and thanks!
Boy, it just gets harder & harder to find stuff on Apple's sites, so don't feel bad.

  • New Non-Apple keyboard doesn't have Eject key.

I wear out Mac keyboards fast, so I got a non-Apple Mac keyboard, but it lacks a drive-open/eject key. Is there any way to program an F-key or a combination to open the drive door?

    Hi-
Go to System/ Library /CoreServices /Menu Extras. Inside that folder, find and double-click on the file called Eject.menu.
Now, look in your Menu bar, and you should be the proud owner of an Eject icon, which, when clicked, ejects the optical drive (closes it too)!

  • New Apple Keyboard - Dashboard and Exposé Keys not working

I have the new Apple Keyboard connected to my PowerMac G5 and i have installed the lasted Keyboard Software Update (1.1) from the Apple website. All new function keys are working (the media keys, brightness, etc.) except for the dashboard and exposé keys. I cannot get them to work, not even asign them in the preferences. Anyone else have this problem? Solutions?

I bought the new aluminum keyboard the other day, but didn't notice there was a software update required. Last night a keyboard software package appeared in Software Update, so I downloaded and installed it. Now virtually nothing works in the function keys except brightness and volume. No dashboard where it's supposed to be, no Exposé, and worryingly no F12 Preview In Browser, which I use a lot for Dreamweaver and web design. Dashboard now appears in F13.
I then went and downloaded the 1.1 Update I should have done in the first place, but this has changed nothing. And yes, I think the PowerPC users are being forgotten when this new stuff is made. But...just how many million of us are there?

  • New Slimline Apple Keyboard - what does the software do?

I loaded the 1.2 update (about 35 mb) "New Slim Keyboard" software, but I don't really see any difference (after rebooting etc.) in the Mouse & Keyboard preferences vs. before I loaded the software -- And the function keys F17, F18 and F19 are new-- how to use them etc. etc.--
Is the software actually adding some features or just enabling TIGER to recognize it?
And I'm using LEOPARD on another computer to get the bugs out before moving LEOPARD to my MAIN MAC (MacBook)-- and it seems to recognize the slim keyboard just fine without that update (unless it is included in 10.5.1??)
    Any comments appreciated.

  • New (wired) Apple Keyboard

I have a iMac G5 with system 10.4.10. I just bought the new (flat) Apple keyboard and installed the latest software for the keyboard, after having keyboard shortcut problems.
Now even after installing all the latest and greatest software, I can't use my left-side command key for the command-paste function in any application; even though I can command-paste with my right-side command key. I can do other command-key functions with the left command key though (such as command-C for copying).
Also, the desktop icons - that should only be the result of pressing the new keyboard's F3 key - randomly activate without my pressing the F3 key.
Any troubleshooting ideas? I really LOVE this keyboard and want to keep it...I just wish it would function as reliably as my (working) one that came with my computer.

There has been a lot of discussion about the function keys, this comes from MacFixIt:
+Apple Aluminum keyboards (#4): More on function keys not working, potential fix+
+We continue to report on an issue with Apple's new aluminum keyboards where the F3 and F4 keys, which should trigger Dashboard and Expose, do not normally trigger these functions unless the function (fn) key is held down while they are pressed. If you navigate to the keyboard pane of System Preferences and check the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys," the Dashboard and Expose functions are triggered by the F3 and F4 keys, but the rest of the special function keys no longer work (brightness toggling, etc.).+
+Some users are apparently being told by Apple that the function keys do not work on any machines other than the Mid-2007 iMacs, with which the keyboards ship (they are also available for separate purchase). One reader writes:+
+"I also encountered the new function keys not working. I contacted Apple support and I was informed that they only work with the new iMacs. "+
+Meanwhile, we have received word of a potential fix for the non-functioning keys that involves use of one of our favorite troubleshooting tools, Pacfisit.+
+MacFixIt reader Joe Mullins writes: "I fixed the dashboard and expose keys on my keyboard. The problem is apparently that Dock.app isn't getting updated properly. I fixed it using my original install disks, 10.4.10 combo updater, keyboard update and Pacifist."+
    +Joe's process is as follows:+
+1. Insert Install disk for 10.4.x and open /System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg/ with pacifist.+
+2. Within Pacifist, navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click install. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace.+
+3. When that's finished, open the 10.4.10 combo update package with pacifist and navigate to the dock.app again. Click install, and this time when it asks, make sure to click update.. not replace.+
+4. When that's finished, open the keyboard software 1.1 mpackage, click the arrow to reveal the contents of AppleKeyboardSoftware_Cmn.pkg, navigate to dock.app one more time, click install and then update once again. Not replace.+
+5. Once this procedure is finished, you can force quit dock.app and the keys should work.+
You should probably reapply the update after doing the above.
    Please post back with results,

  • MacBook ('08) function keys not working (volume, etc) XP SP3, Bootcamp 2.1

    I have just upgraded from a MacBook Core Duo 2.0Ghz (mid-2006) to a MacBook Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz (mid-2008).
I had Windows XP (SP3) installed and running nicely on a partition on the old MacBook, and what I've now done is simply swapped that whole hard drive from the old MacBook to the new one. OSX (10.5) runs just fine, but Windows is giving me issues. I successfully reactivated Windows, and then did a repair installation from my original WinXP install disc, which took Windows back to Service Pack 2. I used the OSX install DVD that came with the new MacBook to install the Boot Camp Windows drivers (version 2.0), and then downloaded and ran the Boot Camp 2.1 update, and then upgraded to WinXP Service Pack 3.
The trackpad on the new MacBook is working in Windows, as is MOST of the keyboard. Only the function keys aren't working (brightness, volume, eject, etc.). I've tried using them both with and without holding down the "fn" key in the bottom-left of the keyboard, and both with and without the setting checked (in Windows Boot Camp prefs) for using the function keys for hardware purposes.
I can't help but think that the problem arises form the different layouts of the 2006 MacBook and the 2008 MacBook. The 2006 model used the F3, F4, and F5 keys for volume (mute, decrease, increase), while the 2008 model uses F10, F11, and F12.
When I look under Add/Remove programs in Windows, I see that there are still old Apple drivers for keyboard and other devices. I see versions of the drivers going back to 1.x, and also 2.0 and 2.1.
In efforts to start afresh, I've tried using both the Boot Camp 2.1 Updater and my 2008 MacBook Install DVD (which has Boot Camp 2.0) to remove Boot Camp from Windows, but neither seem to really do the trick in terms of really removing all the Boot Camp components and drivers, and reinstalling the Boot Camp drivers doesn't get the keyboard function keys working.
I've tried everything I can think of (short of erasing the partition and starting with a fresh install of WinXP, which is NOT an option). Is there some way to remove the old (or all) Apple drivers in order to install Boot Camp components anew? Or would that even get the keyboard working anyway? Any other ideas at solving this problem? Thanks very much.

    AHA!!!! FIXED IT!!!
    Found another forum post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7688314&
And that reminded me that the little Boot Camp grey diamond icon wasn't appearing in the tray like it should. I found KbdMgr.exe and tried to open it, but got an error. So I deleted it and did repair/update from Boot Camp 2.1 Updater, rebooted, and now KbdMgr.exe is running, the icon is in the tray, and the function keys (volume, brightness, etc) are working! Hooray!!
So in conclusion, this problem may not have been due to the different keyboard layouts, but could've been something about SP3 & BootCamp 2.1. Maybe. Who knows. I'm just happy I've got it working.
