Apple Lossless drains my iPod's power!

After doing the battery tests on my Ipod, I've realised that while I can get the full 20 hour battery life from it, if I import songs using Apple Lossless, the battery life is reduced to just 12.5 hours. Does anyone know the reason for this? Does Apple Lossless consume more power? Will anyone from Apple actually answer my question?

Apple lossless files are much larger in comparison to files compressed at say 128kbps or 160kbps.
As such, the iPod's cache has to load more frequently and this inolves spinning up the hard drive more than usual.
Hence the reduced battery playback time.
Typically, any file larger than about 9MB will start to have a noticeable effect on the battery.

  • ITunes not Syncing Lossless files to iPod?

Itunes not syncing Apple Lossless files to iPod?
I had a couple FLAC encoded CD's, and i recoded them into Apple Lossless using dBpoweramp.
These Apple Lossless files load perfectly into iTunes (Playable)
But no matter what I do, I can't get iTunes to put the files onto my iPod. But from what I've seen, my iPod should support these files! (I tagged all the lossless files with a unique Artist name, and told iTunes to only sync that Artist. Even then it wouldn't sync.)

How do I get this to work?

Same problem here, same application versions. I'm trying to get them to sync to an iPhone but it doesn't actually sycnc. They play without issue in iTunes. I converted them from flac to Apple lossless using dbpoweramp.
    Any suggestions would be helpfull

  • IPod Nano 4G Skips During Playback with Apple Lossless Songs

My iPod Nano 4th Generation has been consistently skipping a brief portion of music about every 5th Apple Lossless song during playback. I've been working unsuccessfully to resolve this issue with tech support and fixed the problem when I disabled the energy level setting in the playback menu. While this is a hit to battery life, the skipping no longer occurs. Hoping that this issue is permanently resolved in an upcoming software update.

    Hi,
I brought my ipod yesterday and had the exact same issue. it would skip certain songs frequently and was extremely frustrating. Im not sure if this is the case for all ipods (i have an ipod nano 16Gb 4th gen, with firmware 1.0.4), but i fixed my issue in a series of steps. Im not sure which exact part of my method did the job, but here it is:
    1. plugged it into iTunes and clicked "restore" under the tab "summary". WARNING: This will delete everything, and restore factory settings. im not sure if this is necessary, but youll need to delete the songs which skip anyway.
    2. pressed the eject button IN ITUNES (under "devices", and next to your ipod icon), ejecting the ipod. wait for the ipod to specify when it is ready for it to be unplugged. proceed to unplug said ipod.
    3. Choose the language of your ipod, and go into playback settings and (settings/playback or something) and turn OFF "shake" and "energy saver"
    4. Plug your ipod into your computer again and drag all the songs onto your ipod using itunes.
    5. after it has finished copying, WAIT until the ipod no longer says "synching", and until it says "connected"
    6. Press the eject button IN ITUNES (again, under devices, and next to your ipod icon)
    7. Eject when the ipod says it is ok to do so.
As i said, im not sure which part of the method did it for me, but i think it might be the way in which i was ejecting it. Before i was ejecting the ipod on my desktop. I think it is important to eject it using itunes. Anyway this fixed my ipod. Im not sure if it will do the same to yours, but if its making you very angry (to say the least) like it made me, its worth a try i guess. I would appreciate it if people let me know if this works.

  • Apple iPod USB Power Adapter - ?

    Hello everybody!
I've got a problem with my new iPod mini and I hope you may help me.
After updating the new software for my iPod Apple told me to charge the battery with a Apple iPod USB Power Adapter which I don't have.
I tried to connect the iPod to my computer (Windows XP) but there's always the picture of the adapter on my iPod. I've tried to reset it, restart the computer and so on ...
But the display always shows this sign of the adapter.
I hope you can help me, I'd be very greatful.
    Laura

but it's already worked with my computer, the iPod worked alright, so I don't think that I need this stuff you've just named.
The iPod will work just fine without those things.
It's the update/restore process that needs the A/C adapter.
Anyway, you don't need to listen to me if you don't want to. I won't be insulted.

  • Ipod Classic Buffer Overload with apple lossless

My 160GB Classic occasionally pauses or stalls for a few seconds much like the buffer is overloaded and is reloading. The pause is intermittent (never the same place in same song), it lasts about 2 seconds then the song resumes right where it left off.
My Ipod is loaded with Apple Lossless songs which all play fine on my Mac.
The genius bar has been no help. Reloading and/or upgrading the software on my ipod has not fixed the problem (genius bar suggestion).
Has anyone had a similar experience?

I don't think the pauses have anything to do with Apple Lossless encoding. I get these pauses on occasion with 32kbps audiobooks.
    Enjoy life,
    Steven

  • Apple Lossless & iPod 3G

Hello, although there's already the iPod Video I wanna buy an iPod 3G cause of its better technical specifications. (In the moment I own an iPod Photo) My problem is that I only have Apple Lossless files and I do not know whether iPod 3G can play them. Maybe somebody can help me. I just found out that in the first descriptions there was said that it cannot be played but the iPod would be ready to play future music formats (Firmware-Update).
Can the iPod 3G play/recognize the Apple Lossless format?

Yes that's right but i thought either to buy one on ebay or to buy the single components like motherboard, clickwheel, case, etc. They're avilable maybe at:

  • Apple Lossless in iTunes to AAC on iPod

I burned my music collection to my hard drive using Apple Lossless encoding to keep the audio quality.
I just received an iPod and I would like to load my songs but I would prefer to us the AAC format so that I can conserve the space on the iPod.
Is there a way to keep the songs on my hard drive in the Lossless format while adding them to my iPod in the AAC format?

    No.
Converting on the fly while adding to the iPod is possible on the iPod Shuffle only but not the others.

  • IPod Shuffle Does Not Support Apple LossLess?

i ripped some songs in apple lossless from my cd collections. then i tried to upload those songs to my old iPod Shuffle. But it was denied, and i have to check the "covert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps" check box.
so ipod shuffle doesn't not support apple lossless?
    thanks.

so what's the difference between a play list and a smart play list?
A playlist you need to add songs to it yourself by dragging songs to it.
A smart playlist selects songs based on the criteria you set. You cannot drag songs to a smart playlist.
do i create a play list for each of the albums?
    No.
i have 4000+ songs, can i just add 1 play list and convert all of them to 192kbps?
    Yes.
    File -> New smart playlist.
    Match All rules:
    Kind is AAC
    Bit Rate is 192 {or whatever you select in iTunes prefs -> Import settings}
Songs will be added to this playlist automatically after they get converted.

  • Problem with Apple Lossless, skips some songs! Ipod Video 30 gig

I would love to play my music in higher quality then mp3 so i re ripped my albums to apple lossless (knowing ipod don't play FLAC) but when i try to play a song the ipod often skip the song and go to the next song and when i get it to start playing the first song, it can skip every other other song (from one to three) what's up with that?

  • Dropouts 60GB iPod with apple lossless and equalizer

I have noticed on the new 60GB 5th Generation iPod that some songs have a consistent early dropout under the following conditions:
    - apple lossless format
    - equalizer on, any setting
    - skip to the new song, or continue from last song (does not do it if restart an song already playing)
I assume it is a buffer or equlizer bug, has anyone else had a similar problem?

It doesn't do MP3, but iTunes has the abilty to automatically convert higher bit rate tracks, such as ALAC, to 128/192/256 AAC files on sync. There is no reason to keep multiple copies of the same track.
Just connect your iPhone and select it in iTunes. Click the Summary tab and select the option to "convert higher..." then select the bit rate you want.
Or, you can use one the new cloud syncing services such as iTunes Match, Google Music or Amazon Cloud Play. All these services will convert or "match" ALAC files to either 256 AAC/MP3.

  • Rip music with Apple Lossless but compress when sending to my Ipod

When I pull my music off a cd onto my computer via Itunes, I want to use Apple Lossless compression. When I want to sync the music to my ipod I want to compress down to 128kbps. How can I go about doing this?
    Rob

I use two libraries - a 'Lossless' library and an 'iPod' library. I use a script (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/itinfo/ituneslibrarymanager.php) to toggle between them. This allows me to stream lossless at home over my network without being confused by two sets of each song.

  • Ipod Touch:  Does it have problems playing Apple Lossless files?

    Hi All
This might sound like a strange question to some of you but considering the hassles I am having with the 120gb classic it isn't.
To make a long story short my 120gb classic cannot play Apple Lossless files properly. Essentially they crash the ipod because the files are too large. I have done some research and on many forums people are experiencing the same problem.
I do find it quite offensive that Apple do not have the courage to admit this is a problem but there is nothing I can do about it.
So my solution is to get rid of my 120gb classic and move to a Sony or Cowon player (still doing research to make sure they can handle lossless (not apple) files).
However i really do love everything else about the ipod so I would love to find a way to keep it.
I figure maybe the new ipod touch's might not have this problem because they are solid state and if that is the case then I can stump up for one of those and keep with the ipod brand.
Does anyone know if the Touch's can deal with these large files? Apparently the problem with the old 120gb classics was the small 64mg cache. Hopefull the Ipod touch doesn't have this issue.
Anyway any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Eddie

If I went with an Ipod touch it would be a newer so I guess it would have the newest OS on it.
I'll wait awhile longer and do some more research before I take the plunge because I do not want to get ripped off like I did with the 120gb Classic.
Thanks for the reply though. At least it is leading into the right direction!
    Eddie

  • Does Apple offer support for iPod?

My son's 8 month old iPod 80 gig classic (I guess) has crashed and burned; the Apple site says the serial number is invalid, and I see nowhere on their site any way to get help.
He thinks it's more than just a dead battery.
Any ideas? PS I'm in southern Mexico, so 800 numbers aren't real helpful.

If you are being told the serial number is invalid, perhaps you have mis-read it. It is very small, try using a magnifying glass - I've had to do this.
    Before doing that though:
Sometimes, iPods just will not wake up, which gives the appearance of being dead. A simple reset can fix this.
To perform a reset, turn the *Hold switch* on, then off and then press the menu button and the select button (the centre one) together for up to ten seconds. If the Apple logo appears, the iPod will then start up and probably be okay. If it does not, try the reset again, since Apple suggest doing this "a few times".
The other basic thing to try is leaving the iPod unplugged for 24 hours. If the iPod is "stuck" trying to perform an action and therefore unable to respond to key presses (also giving the impression of being dead), leaving it for 24 hours is usually enough to drain the battery, at which point the iPod will turn off. Only then, is it worth plugging the iPod into a power source. After about 30 minutes, you will see a "low battery warning" message. The iPod will have been "reset" and will need to be fully charged before use.
If neither of these things fix it, let us know in this thread and we'll go from there.
