Apple mac cannot open InDesign document I sent

Hi, A friend created an InDesign document on an Apple Mac, sent it to me. I opened it on a PC running InDesign (64 bit) V9.0.  I was able to make a lot of changes. When I sent the document back they were unable to open it. I don't understand how that is possible. Isn't the indd format defined such that both PC's and Mac's can work with the documents. Can anyone help?
Many thanks
Kind regards
Dennis

It almost surely means that they don't have InDesign CC 9.0 (your version). They have an earlier version. Save it as an INDL file.

It may seem strange indeed, but yes, you have to ALSO install the older version 6 for Apple's system; other applications will use your Java (which I believe is now even 9) and others will use that version 6.

You cannot access iCloud on a Mac running Mac OSX 10.4.  Are you sure, the system version is correct?
If you are running iWork '09 (iWork 09 9.0.1) on your Mac with Numbers 2.3, you must at least have MacOS X 10.5.6 installed.
if you want iCloud support for iOS apps, you need the iWork 9.3 update, see:  About the iWork 9.3 Update
And this update requires OS X Lion v10.7.4
Is your iMac compatible with Lion or later?

Did you try to install CS5 on a new computer by copying or using migration? That won't work with Adobe applications.
You'll probably have to start by cleaning off the Adobe Creative Suite with the Adobe Cleaner Tool here:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download a clean install copy of CS5 here (unless you have the original discs you used to install):

A few general trouble shooting tips that may apply here:
    1. If you used Software Update to do the OS update(s) to reach 10.6.7, go to http://support.apple.com/downloads/ and download and apply the Mac OS v10.6.7 Combo Updater. The Combo Updater contains some fixes that were not included in the incremental updaters used by Software Update.
1a. Check that you have the current version of Pages (and of the other iWork applications) installed. All three applications' current version numbers end in .0.5
    2. A common cause of malfunctioning applications is a corrupted preferences file (.plist file). Your Pages '09's plist is at yourname > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iWork.pages.plist
Quit Pages, locate the file and Drag it to the Desktop (or to the Trash).
Restart Pages and attempt to open one of the files.
If all is well, Trash the plist file and empty the Trash.
If there's no change, AND you've made changes to the Preferences that you wish to keep, drag the file back to its previous location, replacing any new one that has been created.

  • Cannot open Word document attachment in mail before sending.

Cannot open Word document attachment in mail before sending.
In Snow Leopard Mail 4, (Version 4.0 (1075/1075.2)) if I attach a word document to a message and, BEFORE sending the message, I double click the attached document to open it, to make sure it is the right one, I get the error "Mail was unable to save the attachment “Test.doc” to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writable."
The attachment is mailed correctly and arrives at the destination, but the ability to verify an attached document before sending it is essential. This has worked fine in all previous editions of OS X.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks - Lawrence

I have same problem. I've done the following testing to pinpoint where the problem lies and there are clues (see below):
    1. My machine had SnowLeopard installed "fresh" (i.e. disk reformat and installed cleanly)
    2. I have a comparison machine running Leopard (10.5.6) - essentially a mirror but with different OS
    3. Problem is triggered when creating new email, with a MS Word .doc attachment added. If you attempt to open the attached file in the mail (not yet sent) it produces the error message "unable to save file XXX.doc to disk. Verify that your downloads folder exists and is writeable"
4.However, once the mail is sent, the recipient can open the attachment without problems.
    5. I have run Disk Utility and all permissions are correct. My downloads folder exists.
    6. The problem is not present in Leopard (mirror machine other than OS)
    7. I have uninstalled and reinstalled MS Office. Problem still present
    8. I have deleted and recreated the preference files for both MS Office and for Mail. Problem still present.
    And finally...
9.The problem is confined to .doc files. It works fine for .pdf, .ods AND even for Microsoft .xls files.
So it may be a MS Word problem triggered by Snow Leopard?
Apple: if you can confirm this is a Microsoft problem it may be able to be reported to them as a compatibility issue?
    Hope this helps.

  • I had Microsoft Office installed in my Macbook Air by one of the technicians in the store, it was working fine the first week but after that it started popping a notice saying it cannot verify my suscription online and now I cannot open any documents?

I just bought a Macbook Air almost a month now. When I bought it, the technician installed Microsoft Office 365 as they were having a promotion at the time. However after a week of using it, it started popping up a notice saying that it cannot verify Microsoft Office. I still managed to open the word document but as of today, it will not open. I took it to the Mac store last week, and they said that there was nothing wrong with it and they could not figure out any problem.
I don't know what to do and I am in desperate need of help. I cannot open my documents at all and I have my research paper that I need to finish writing. This is very disappointing and extremely stressful for me. If anyone has any suggestions of how this can be fixed, please let me know. I do not want to lose my hard work =(

Microsoft Office 365 is a subscription - based service. You have to pay for it... and keep paying for it... and paying for it... as in 365 days a year... or lose your hard work.
Office Home Premium is a mere $10 a month, but a convenient annual subscription is only $100 a year. This is a substantial discount to Microsoft's Office 365 business products ($150 / employee / year).
Such a deal! Are you not absolutely thrilled?
Here are some slightly more reasonable alternatives, all of which are compatible with their Office equivalents:
    LibreOffice (donation-supported)
NeoOffice ($10 but older version is free if you can find it)
    OpenOffice (completely free)
    Numbers ($19.99)
    Pages ($19.99)

  • Just updated Pages to version 5.1 on App Store but Pages doesn't show that it's updated and cannot open a document

I just updated the software in Pages to 5.1 on my iMac OS (Mavericks) but the Pages Application is giving me an error saying that I cannot open a document recently updated until I perform a software update!
When I am in Pages and to go About Pages it still shows Pages 4.3 (1098)

You have 2 Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.1 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong one.

This is the error you are getting when you are opening the published content on web. This is a bug, but you can use the below fix.
Open the publish/web/index_edge.js and remove the "use strict"; statement at the beginning.
This will fix the problem. We will address this issue in the next release.

  • Word cannot open this document.  The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document,  or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example,\ /).

I recently upgraded to a new Macbook Air running Lion, from my 2007 white Macbook running Snow Leopard.  I had Office for Mac 2004 on the 2007, but had to upgrade to Office for Mac 2011 to be compatible with Lion on the Air.  Now when I try to open my documents on the Air that were saved under Office 2004 on the old computer, I get the following message: Word cannot open this document.  The document might be in use, the document might not be a valid Word document,  or the file name might contain invalid characters (for example,\ /).
    Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Ha,ha,ha.....I figured it out.  But for anyone else who's having this problem, it seems that while Office 2004 allowed dates in this format: 00/00/00, Office 2011 doesn't like it at all.  I just changed the format in the document names to 00-00-00 and all is well.  Documents are opening beautifully!

  • Word 2008 "Word Cannot Open this Document"

I couldn't find a better forum so I'll put this here.
I have Microsoft Word Version 12.0, and have had it installed for a few months. I set the saving format to compatable by default (so it makes .doc and not .docx). Yesterday I was working on a word file I had saved on my thumb drive and it worked fine. Today I try to open it (both on my Macbook, my iMac and on a PC I had access to) and it gives me the following error: "Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid Word document". I have noticed that this has happened to half a dozen of my other word files also. I notice that on my Macbook all of the word files have the new plain black and white icons that show the text in tiny writing, while the ones I can't open have the old blue file icons (on other, older computers they seem the same).
    So I have three questions:
Is this a problem others have faced? If so, how can I get around it?
Are those particular files just corrupted? If so, is this a problem I ought to be wary of with Word 12?
If they are corrupted, is there any way I can rescue these texts? It's a very important document.
    I eagerly await your responses.

i cannot open my document in pages 5.0.1 that I created in same. Computer tells me that I need to have a later version of pages. What do I do?

You're running an older version of Pages, perhaps in a folder called "iWork '09" in the Applications folder, or else on your Desktop. Quit it and launch the one at the top level of Applications.

  • Cannot open PDF document in IE8

On a computer with Windows XP, IE8 and Reader XI     (11.0.3) we cannot open a document within Internet Explorer.  The "add-on" exists in the "run without confirmation" however it will not open the document.  I did note that in trying to open the "PDF of Reader XI Help" it did download the document, and listed the size of the document but it would not open it.
    Thank You Pat G

    Hi, T.
When you import a PDF into Photoshop to get some images placed inside the PDF, there's no need to rasterize the file. This is because the feature is a bit hidden in the dialogue screen of "import PDF". Look in the upper part of the dialogue and you'll see "Select: page". Go into that drop down and select instead "image" (the exact wording may vary as my PS is a Spanish one).
Then, you'll be offered all the image boxes inside the PDF. They'll be imported "as is", no resampling or rasterizing needed.
    Hope it helps
