Apple Macbook Air Superdrive - MC684ZM/A

Hi fellow mac users.
I purchased a Macbook Air 13.3" (Model: a1369).  I'm loving it.
I'm semi-new to Mac (not to computers). So please bear with me.  To slowly ween myself off windows (not entirely though, because currently some things can still only be done in windows. I installed Parallel Desktop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04.  My Mac thus far runs as close to flawless without hiccups with all 3 operating systems running at the same time and without degradation in speed or quality (games in windows run perfectly in the virtual environment). Needless to say i'm thoroughly impressed by the hardware on a such slim design.
To my question.  I'm considering buying the Apple Macbook Air Superdrive - MC684ZM/A.  It got excellent reviews on amazon, but one of the things i was searching for in the reviews that i was hoping would be answered before i purchased was... if the drive would operate properly within windows and ubuntu on my macbook.  I don't expect it to run on any of my other laptops or computers, I only want to make sure it'll run properly on all three operating systems within the macbook.  Can anyone confirm if it works or not?  Granted, i've found other drives at a cheaper price that seem to work with all three, but price really isn't my priority as is quality and i would prefer to keep as many peripherals apple as possible.  I'm also kind of a minimalist, the smaller/slimmer the drive the better.

I've never tried it with Ubuntu, but it works perfectly in Windows under VMware Fusion.  I'm sure Parallel's works also.  It's just another virtual device assigned to the underlying OS.
I've had my superdrive since 2008 with the orginal Air and have been using it with the new 2011 Air and 2010 Mac Mini Server  as well.
Regards,
Captfred

  • Won't boot from Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive

I am told to run DISK UTILITY as I get the "No Mountable File System" error for EVERY DMG I try to install. (Install works fine on my 2nd MacAir so the DMG is not damaged.) However DISK UTILITY does not fix this issue.
I am trying to boot to Disk Warrior 4.2 on my Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive. Holding C down for 10 minutes on reboot does not work. Selecting DVD SuperDrive using the REBOOT | OPTION KEY option does not work.
    Any ideas?
    My thanks!
    ~P

Sorry, but the current Disk Warrior CD will not boot the recent MacBook Air models. See:
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html
The only way to run DW on your system would be to boot the MBA from an external hard drive with your MBA's version of Mac OS X and DW installed on the drive. IF you don't have one available you can use, if there's an Apple Store in your area they may be able to help. Otherwise, you may have to reformat your MBA's hard drive.
    Regards.

  • New MacBook Air SuperDrive for G4 PowerBook

My G4 PowerBook is still going strong except the original SuperDrive died a few months ago. While watching the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, I see that there is now an External MacBook Air SuperDrive option available for the new MacBook Air for $99. Does anyone know if this external Superdrive will work with the G4 PowerBooks?
    Thanks.

Hi, DLaid, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You could replace your internal Superdrive yourself for $50-S75 USD (depending on what drive you chose) and an hour of your time. See the link in my post above. Buying an external optical drive to use with a portable computer would be silly, but if you wanted to do it anyway, there are dozens to choose from besides Apple's. As I explained above, a USB-only drive is totally inappropriate for use with a Tibook, even if it would work. Get a FireWire-capable drive if you buy an external.
Be aware also that when you post in these forums, you aren't talking to Apple; you're just talking to other Mac users like yourself. The people at Apple who need to hear your concerns don't monitor these boards. This is explained in the "Help & Terms of Use" link that appears in the right sidebar of every Discussions page. Your second-paragraph gripes would be more usefully addressed directly to Apple through the appropriate Product Feedback channels:

  • Can two (or more) macbook air superdrives be used on mac mini

on the new (july 2011) mac mini, can I connect two or more of the macbook air superdrives?

    I agree with John.
We don't know how the ports are laid out, but if they're a pair (1-2)(3-4), I'd not plug both drives into (1-2) or (3-4). I'd  start with the outermost ones.
Please report back if it works.
And, I can't help but smile that you want to use two superdrives with the mini, because those of use who would have loved Apple to keep a superdrive in the 2011 mini, have been getting flack from those who love the omission, that the technology is obsolete, discs aren't used any more, time to move forward, ...

  • Macbook air superdrive compatible with macbook pro

i have the macbook pro laptop.  is the macbook air superdrive compatible with this?  iam using a external drive atm but it was not an apple product.  my computer has been upgraded this is the reason for the external drive.  can anyone advise?
    thanx Tracy Ann

Actually there is nothing different from the Apple Super drive to any other DVD drive made for notebook computers.
Any external DVD drive will work with a Macbook Pro.

  • Can I use the macbook air superdrive with my non server mac mini?

I recently removed the optical super drive from my early 2009 mac mini to switch to a 2 HD setup.  I have an opportunity to get a macbook air superdrive (external) for a really good deal, but I am unsure whether or not it will work.  The specs say that it will work with a min that has no optical drive, but does it matter if I removed the drive myself instead of buying the server version of the mini?

Ahhh, you did not say that you don't have one yet. Perhaps you should csll an Apple vendor in your area and ask. Although it is supposed to work with a Mini, I don't know about a Mini from 2009 since the optical drive was not released until the 2010 MBA came out, I believe.

Yes, junker thumb drives pour like rain in the market.

  • I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

I am connecting an external USB HDD and I can see it on my Apple Macbook Air. BUT this drive is READ only. How can I write to it?

    Drive Partition and Format
1.Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • MacBook Air Superdrive?? Does it work with MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I need an external Superdrive. Does the MacBook Air Superdrive work with MacBook Pro??

No, it does not (at least, not without opening the drive and modifying the internal components).
External optical drives from Sony and LaCie work well with the MBP. Here's ONE EXAMPLE, here's ANOTHER EXAMPLE, both from Amazon.

  • How can I make my Windows side recognize my external Macbook Air Superdrive

So I updated my Mac to Snow Leopard but I'm having a slight problem. Previously my Windows side did not have problems recognizing the Macbook Air Superdrive but now, each time that I switch to the PC side, the drive stops functioning completely. Is there a way that I can somehow format the drive/make it run on the PC side?
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

im not sure if this is what you mean, but this program here will allow you full access to all Mac partitions:

if you think it might be what you want, download the demo and see if that works.
