Apple Mail 4.3 (1081) and Gmail corrupted IMAP setup?

Something strange happened to my mom's Mail setup with Gmail.
She got a "credentials error" (her words, not mine) and from then on it wouldn't connect to her IMAP mailbox. It would just stay offline with the little exclamation point next to the mailboxes.
I deleted her gmail account in Mail and remade it - so it is working.
Two questions, is this known to happen every now and then?
Is there something I should do to make sure all the previous settings have been cleared out?
I have it set up so it doesn't store and mail on the local machine, in case the laptop gets stolen.

Greetings,
Two questions, is this known to happen every now and then?
I'll say no. I've never had that message. I've been using Gmail IMAP on multiple computers for quite some time.
Is there something I should do to make sure all the previous settings have been cleared out?
While I don't think it's necessary if it is working right now (If it ain't broke..don't fix it), you could reset Mail back to it's Apple factory settings and re-input her Gmail information.
Remove the following to the trash:
Your User > Library > Caches
Your User > Library > Mail
Your User > Library > Mail Downloads
Your User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Mail (there may be more than one, remove them all)
Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access and delete any entry for Gmail.
You can then launch Mail and re-enter all her Gmail settings from scratch.
Cheers.

  • Confusion with mail.app and Gmail using imap

I've had a yahoo.com email address for years, and pay for Mail Plus and POP3, which I frankly don't even use. Now that I've confirmed, however, that I can successfully forward emails from my yahoo box to my new gmail box, I'd like to look into setting up mail.app for the gmail account using imap. Like most people, I access my mail from several places (home & work computers, Touch, and others), and imap makes sense as the right way to go.
Last night I tried to set things up on mail.app on the Mac, and boy was it confusing in terms of the folders, etc. Is there someplace someone can point me for a sort of "beginner's guide to setting up Gmail/imap with mail.app"? Hopefully this "guide" would give me some hints on setting up various rules, etc. that would allow me to have a setup that makes sense: only one copy of emails, sent items in the sent items folder, etc.
One more thing: can I set up Gmail/imap with more than one email client? For example, can I use mail.app at home and Thunderbird on the Windows computer in my office? And how is the creation of new folders (or labels, I guess, as Gmail calls them) on the web handled by mail.app (or Thunderbird)? I'm guessing that a new label created on Gmail on the web doesn't automatically result in a folder being created in mail.app (or Thunderbird), or does it? If this is correct (no folder created in mail.app until I create it on the Mac), is the message that was moved to a folder on the web found in mail.app in the All Messages folder (or whatever it's called)?
Sorry for the basic nature of these questions...this all seems pretty complicated, and I'd like to get it right the first time. Thanks.

BTW Thanks for the "head's up" that GMail now supports IMAP (I've been waiting for it!)
I'm not sure what your confusion is, other than maybe the confusion between how folders and messages work in Outlook versus Apple Mail and IMAP. I've used both, and several other mail programs over the years.
IMAP permits you to have directories which contain message folders. I make the distinction, because Outlook allows you to message folders which contain messages AND other message folders. I believe most implementations of IMAP do not allow messages inside of directories. Thus, a directory looks like a message folder, but it may only contain message folders, and not individual messages.
Now, GMail appears to create message folders for each label you define in GMail, and messages which have several labels appear in each folder. If you copy the folders to your computer, you WILL have multiple copies of those messages, however if you leave them on the server, GMAIL does all the work and you only have one copy of each message.
Special folders in GMail are all located in the directory [Gmail] and include the message folders "All Mail", "Drafts", "Sent Mail", "Spam", "Starred" and "Trash". Notice I say "directory" and not "message folder" for "[Gmail]". That is important.
I cannot attest as to what GMail does when you create a folder from your mail.app client, as I have not done that yet. I would venture a guess that it will define a GMail label and mark any messages you "move" to that folder with that label. The GMail special folder "All Mail" contains all of your mail messages, and is equivalent to selecting "All Mail" when using the web interface.
Your inbox messages will appear in the section with all of your inboxes at the top of your mailbox list. Make sure that you set your preferences to match the recommended preferences for Apple Mail when setting up your GMail account. Otherwise you will end up with duplicates and/or a lot of unnecessary data transfers to your Mac.
Hope this helps. If not, please give a more explicit example of something that doesn't work the way you expect.

Can I use Apple Mail on my ipad and on a pc using safari browser

You would configure the iPad to connect to your email provider's IMAP servers.  How that's done is specific to whatever mail provider you use.  If it's one of the major email services like AOL, Hotmail or Yahoo, then you should be able to just create a new mail account on the iPad and follow the instructions you see on the iPad.  If your email is not listed, then you'll need to contact your mail provider so you can know what to enter for the server name, etc.

  • My Apple Mail program keeps hanging and crashing!

I would sincerely appreciate help in trying to determine the continuing problem I face with my Apple Mail program hanging up and crashing over and over again. I have deleted the preference file located in the Library Preferences section. I have deleted the entire program and reinstalled it. I have deleted the preference file and re-created all of my accounts. I have even created a new user and started from scratch in creating a new mail account.
Each time I have used the any one of the following methods, the mail program would run okay for a few hours and then it will start to hang or crash and the only way that I can restart the program is by using the "Force Quit" function. I am growing extremely frustrated after 6 months of trying to resolve this problem. I am tired of going to see these so-called "Genius" professionals who have not given me any potential solutions other than the reinstall the entire Tiger software. Please help!

Depending on what did you do to reinstall Mail, you may very well have made things worse. Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Mail application as described here:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
If the version of the system software on your installation disks is earlier than what you're using now, then you must also reinstall the corresponding Combo Update afterwards, to bring the Mail application back in sync with the rest of the system:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.
Your problems probably won't disappear after doing the above, but we cannot proceed any further until you've done it. Post back with your observations.

  • How to prevent Apple Mail from downloading old emails from Yahoo (Imap)

I started using Apple Mail and decided to use it to access my yahoo mail.  Apple mail worked well in setting up my account but the problem is I have more than 10,000 emails in my yahoo account and Apple mail is downloading each and every one of them.  Even if i choose for it not to download attachments, it will still take a long time to download.  Is there a way or Mail to just download emails starting now, or at least within this year only?

Good question. I have the same issue. Too many old Yahoo emails. My iMac struggles to download the email to the client and it doesn't work - it seems to time out and stop downloading the old mail.

  • I have 4 accounts in Apple Mail, 1 at iCloud and 3 at Gmail. On just one of those addresses a given message is received numerous times. Example: my inbox shows the 1st 2 messages coming from my own email address and the title is identical, Mind over .....

I'd love to offer a screen capture and save a few 1000 words. You'll see that I have numerous duplicate copies of emails being received by one account, my RegisterMe4Now address. Let's see if the captures don't speak for themselves.
I would appreciate your help and guidance. Thank you.

  • Configuring Apple Mail client to work with gmail and mail relays

I have a gmail account [email protected] and am successfully using this account from both my macbookpro an iphone.
I also have an e-mail relay account [email protected] I have successfully configured the email relay to send mail to [email protected] and get it fine on my mail client. My problem is that when I reply to these emails or create fresh e-mails, I'd like it to use the address [email protected] not [email protected] When I used to use Eudora, there was a setting in the account configuration screen called "reply to" this would change the reply to email account to whatever I wanted, in this case, [email protected] I have scoured the mail documentation and realize that I am missing something simple. I would appreciate any assistance with configuration settings necessary to have my relay alias show-up on my mail headings.
    thanks
    Art

The first thing to do is to log into the Gmail web site and configure your account so that it allows you to send mail from [email protected]
Then configure your account in Mail so that the Email Address is [email protected] That should do it. This is better than setting a reply-to because the mail will really be from [email protected] and not [email protected]
If you want, you can put both [email protected] and [email protected] in the Email Address (separated with a comma) in which case Mail will show a popup menu labeled From below the Subject. You can then select which address the message should be from.

  • I am using apple mail on my Mac and have two different accounts set up, one personal and one business. when i send mail a copy of the message is being saved into my business account swell.

Both accounts are Imap but the business one is Gmail and the persoanl one is 1and1. when i compose new mail in my personal account I make sure it says its going from my 1and1 account but for some reason the message appears in both sent boxes.
I need to fix this as I dont want other people using the business account seeing my personal sent emails!
This has only just started in last couple of days when I did something on accounts but cant think what that would have been.
    hope someone can help.

I'd like to have one Apple Mail application for my one very important email account while the rest can stay on a different Apple Mail app.
Consider using Thunderbird for the "rest."

  • Apple Mail no longer working with Gmail

    Hi,
I've been using Apple Mail for over a year now to coordinate multiple email addresses and it worked well until a few weeks ago when Gmail stopped working. I can add my account, the account loads, but the account is only visible if you go through the subfolders - it isn't visible under "Inbox". This defeats the purpose of using a client, since I'm not notified if I receive a message and to check I would have to flip back down to Gmail's subfolder to check that account and then flip back up to check my other accounts. I at first thought it was a problem with Apple Mail, but after wiping my computer and re-installing three times and upgrading to the new OS, I've decided it's a problem with my Gmail. I also can't get Gmail to work with Apple Mail clients on other computers. It works OK but not great with Thunderbird. Any help would be MUCH appreciated! Thank you!!

Did you change any setting in Mail? Did you change your gmail account password? Did you activate 2-step verification on your gmail account?
If you haven't done anything from above, maybe problem is with your network... Did you try to turn off your router for few minutes and then turn ON again?
Did you install any 3rd party security apps on your Mac? Did you enable system firewall? Do you use any proxy servers? Do you use VPN?
    There might be more questions...

  • Apple mail showing wrong body in gmail (imap) messages

I asked about this the other day and thought I had solved my own problem by rebuilding Mail. But it is persisting and becoming more than annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening suddenly and how to fix it? I have recently repaired permissions for a back up using SuperDuper!
I received my gmail via IMAP in Apple Mail. It has worked perfectly for years, but in the last week to 10 days, I find that in some mail, the Subject/From do not match the Reply To/Body.  Just now I received a confirmation of an appointment and I can't see the date/time because the body is that of another email (which contains the correct body (they are not switched) - see below). Another time, there was a purchase confirmation that was replaced. Information that I need to be able to read and store!

It's not just you.  I'm having the same problem -- Gmail, IMAP, subject lines matched with wrong email body.
And I've noticed that in my case, it seems that (at least?) two emails have exchanged the subjects/message index lines and their bodies.
Rebuilding or deleting accounts or deleting the envelope index doesn't help -- it always comes back in a day or two, often with the same emails.

  • Mailing photos with iphoto and gmail

I use gmail as my primary email account. I don't use apple mail and I'm not necessarily interested in configuring Apple Mail to use my gmail account.
What I'm interested in is using iphoto to email photos out using gmail. I'm a recent windows convert and I really enjoyed Picasa's method of doing this.
Please let me know if you know of a way to make iPhoto email photos out using gmail. Thanks.

Hi Jason, you can only configure iPhoto emails option with a email client such as Mail.app, Eudora, entourage.
for your purpose you have to share/export the images to the desktop, then navigate to the desktop and choose the images with the browsers browse option.
By the way, what is Picasa's method?

  • Apple Mail won't connect to Gmail

My Apple Mail 4.5 has been working fine up until a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know what happened, but now it won't connect to Gmail.  It says something like port 993 time out?  I've been searching online to find solutions, but none of them seems to work.  I can still log in thru webmail and I've already checked to see if my POP and IMAP are enabled in Gmail settings.  Please help Apple Geniuses.  Thanks.

  • Apple mail does not sync with gMail

Today my Apple Mail no longer provides me with my gMail in the inbox.
I can send mail to my gMail address and it shows in the Sent box ...but it never makes it to my Inbox.
If I log directly into Google Mail the email message is there.
    This has always worked before.
Also, just now I downloaded and installed the Apple update for Mail ...which said it fixes some gMail account issues ..but I still have the problem.

    Hi guys
I'm stuck here having exactly the same problem. The funny thing is, it all started since that Mail for Mavericks update, 1.0 which I installed yesterday, which irronically stated it should solve some instability problems (that I was not experincing at all) and made things go completely wrong. I tried to delete and add the account again, and it is not making things better. The weird thing is that I can see the content of some folders, such as deleted items, and inconsistent as it is, it might not display it anymore after I try to go back to this folder. For example, I thought I solved the problem this afternoon, after I had deleted the account and added it for the third time, and let my computer sit there for a while and sync. When I returned to my Mac after an hour, I was under the impression that it synced my inbox correctly, but then when I clicked on another folder to see what's inside and got back to inbox afterwards, it was completely empty again. Mail is just very unstable and the problems are increddibly inconsistent. I think I am now going to try to add the account manually. I will let you know what happens.

  • Apple Mail, Photo Browser, Attachments and Yosemite

    OK,
    Help.
Anytime I want to insert a photo from my iPhoto Library into Apple Mail via Photo Browser in  Yosemite Mail, it crashes.
My preferred method - Via add attachments - Finder/Pictures/Iphoto library doesn't work anymore. It now says Open iPhoto library.
Why does Apple change these things without like checking them out?
Anyone have an advice. I think Yosemite is pretty half baked. I'm a computer consultant and this is the worst release for customers since Leopard.
