Apple Mail 4.3 Taking Mailbox Offline doesn't do anything

In Apple Mail 4.3 when i right click and select Take Mailbox Offline, the mailbox becomes gray, and a lightning bolt indicating that it is not connected to the imap server shows up, however i still continue to get new messages in its inbox.
(If you're wondering, i have an admin email address that log messages get sent to, and I only want to check it when the server is down, otherwise it just fills my inbox)
Has anyone else experienced this? It worked before i upgraded apple mail

Any developers follow this forum? Any in site? Want any troubleshooting on my end or extra info?
Looks like i'm not the only person with a problem.

  • Apple Mail can't import mailboxes after switch to new Mac

I just purchased a new iMac (running Yosemite 10.10.2) and imported the Time Machine backup from my MacBook Pro (running Mavericks 10.9.5).
When attempting to launch Mail I am forced to import all mailboxes, there doesn't seem to be any way of skipping this step. In the second mailbox (Googlemail IMAP account) I can import 98% of the over 38,000 emails yet import stops at the same place every time. There seems to be something wrong with the file from which Mail is importing.
Is there any way to force Mail to skip this mailbox? Or replace the file Mail is attempting to import from?
I have the following backups: the Time Machine backup and an image I created using SuperDuper.

  • Massive frustration with Apple Mail and POP accounts going offline

I love Apple mail. Best interface ever.
BUT... because of issues with Apple Mail, I've been forced to use Entourage.
I really want to use Apple Mail and hope someone here can help me with this.
I have two Yahoo business mail POP accounts that I need to have running for an online business I have. I keep Mail running all day and my .Mac IMAP account and a Comcast POP account stay up all the time.
But the two Yahoo accounts keep going offline. I get an Apple Mail message asking me to reenter my password. They won't stay up more than five minutes or so.
Over the course of a day, this is so irritating that, as I said, I've had to switch to Entourage, where the accounts stay connected all the time and work just fine.
I've scoured the forums here. Deleted .plists, added IP addresses, followed any suggestion that seemed plausible/ But no luck.
If Entourage works, Apple Mail, it seems to me, also should.
    Can anyone help????

Speaking as one forced to use Entourage at work I can with confidence say in my case that they are different products serving different markets with different needs.
Apple did not drop the ball - the server is asking for re-authentication of a POP client. Any POP client should behave the same way. Yes, the client could just provide the credentials again, but it is safer to reequire the user to respond to the request.
That the request happens frequently is a function of the interrelationship between the DHCP lease life, client, and the mail host's response to new information.
Who is providing your DHCP lease?

  • Apple Mail 5 use this mailbox for

Alright, so, I have been playing with the updated Mail application in Lion. I love the new interface but I seem to be missing an important part or just unable to find it. When setting up an account to connect to Gmail's IMAP I seem to be unable to get the common folders, Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam, working in unison with Gmail's Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam labels. In the previous versions of Mail I've been able to right-click each of those folders and click "Use this mailbox for..." to which I would select the proper folder. This option seems to be missing in Apple Mail 5 or, the very least, I'm unable to find it or an equal option.
When creating an account to use with Gmail I have played with the preference checkboxes for those common folders. Leaving them checked I will get a new label created in Gmail instead of the email going into the real folder. For instance, if I delete an email it will go into my trash on the mac and it will then have the label "Deleted Messages" but not actually be in the trash in Gmail. The same goes for Sent Mail as well. If I uncheck these options then I get duplicate email in the Mail Sent folder as well as Gmail's Sent label. On top of this, if I click the sent button I in the new Mail interface I ONLY see mail I have sent from Apple Mail and not items that are in my sent mail label for Gmail. Which is annoying.
So, in short, is it possible, and if so then how, do I get Gmail and Apple Mail's Sent/Draft/Trash/Spam folders perfectly synced so that it will work like how it used to in Snow Leopard or even how it currently works on the iPhone? If I can not get this functionality then I guess I will have to say goodbye to Apple Mail which is a shame because I really love the new interface.
If this has been asked and answered/resolved can I please get a link to the discussion? I've searched but seem to be unable to find any possible answers.

It is an exchange account. In Mail>Preferences>Accounts I do not see the IMAP Path Prefix, which isn't surprising (when it is no IMAP-account).
Coming to your question, Ernie: I created this account longer ago, maybe 2 years? I created this subfolder from a Windows computer and recently made the swith for my business computer to a MBA. Great computer! Strange thing is, the mails in the subfolder are shown correctly in my iPad Mail app... Also: I created such a subfolder in my Inbox and this mail is shown correctly... Strange... For this mailbox (and for all others) the options in the dropdown menu 'use this mailbox for' etc are all greyed out...

  • Upgraded to apple mail 4.5 now gmail pop doesn't work

Have a MacBook Air...was on the fritz. Took it to Genius Bar. Seemed the OS was corrupted, and they gave me a free upgrade to 10.6.8
    Nice.
Only problem is, am now having all sorts of trouble getting my Apple Mail 4.5 to work with Gmail POP. Some days are okay, but then for no reason it just stops downloading incoming...Can send. But receive just stops.
    Any suggestions?

  • Apple Mail problem of taking my outgoing servers offline for no apparent reason.

Hi folks,i have my Macbook pro split into 2 users {both me},one half i use for my photography and the other for everything else,my problem is that i have my Gmail back to front,it's on my photography half so i have to log into that half when i want to check emails,i do have a version of Gmail on the other half also but it's not the original with my old emails in it.So i'd like to know how to get the original gmail into my non photography side, god i hope this makes sense :)...I have tried to copy all the same info on the accounts settings page but one half won't hold the password, many thanks.Oh and the gmail people sent me here for assistance, cheers.

I just experienced this today. It involved all of the clips in a multiclip sequence. I edited the project, worked on some other projects, and suddenly it said it couldn't locate the captured files.
All of the clips were captured using Capture Now.
One clip WASN'T lost...the only clip not included in the multiclip sequence.
The files did not show up in Finder anymore. I knew exactly where they were located and also tried Spotlight. They simply vanished abruptly.
Very strange and frustrating...and a big waste of time.

  • Apple mail 5.3 taking forever to load emails

I hae a Mac mini running Mail 5.3. I use only Gmail/Google apps emails. For the last 5 or 6 weeks, the app will take forever to load emails. The spinning weels next to each mailbox will be there for around an hour until it loads emails. Yes, I have lots of emails in the server (I use IMAP) but since the issue is new, I am concerned since I use the same accounts in a macbook air and I don't have to deal with this at all.
Also, I've noticed that my mac slows down a lot when running Mail app. since this issue started.
Any clue or known solution will be trully appreciated
    Thanks
    Alvaro

I have the same problem - Mail takes anywhere form 10 minutes to 2 hours to sync with GMail. To the point of being useless as a mail client.
I tried the rebuild option. No change. Still taking *forever* to sync.

  • Apple mail - account is offline - refuses to go online

I use apple mail to connect to multiple accounts.  One of them went offline on Friday and refuses to come back on.
The account is fully functional, because it's still working fine on iPhone, iPad and through Outlook 2011.
It's like once apple mail decides an account is offline, that's it.
    Is there a solution?

  • Apple Mail won't update and keeps recovering the same message.

My Apple Mail hasn't been working since 31st January. Every time I open it the same email just continues duplicating itself in the "Recovered messages" folder so I end up with hundreds of them. This email was the last email that was successfully sent and I was overseas at the time. When I returned home, my email would not update and it has not worked since.
I have tried rebuilding and taking mailboxes offline and online. Should I delete the 'mail' folder from my library? Any suggestions would be appreciated! I have not been using a Mac for too long, so I tend not to know what to do when something goes wrong.

    Hello,
You'd only want to delete boxes/accounts if you could afford to loose all those emauls.
Is this a POP account or IMAP?
Who is the Mail provider, the part after the @ sign?

  • How to get Spam folder in Apple Mail?

I received some important emails in my spam folders when I checked them with Safari, but Apple mail does not have them in Inbox or Junk folder. How to get Spam folder in Apple Mail?

In the mailbox list, below the word "MAILBOXES" and the standard mailboxes (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash, & Junk), you should have some lines like "SMART MAILBOXES", "REMINDERS", "RSS", "ON MY MAC", and a line with the name of each of your mail accounts. Each of those lines may have subordinate lines indented below it, or they may be hidden. Before Lion, the top-level lines would have standard disclosure triangles to their left like folders, but Lion Mail removed that visual clue in favor of a word "Show" or "Hide" to the right that appears only when you mouse over it.
The Gmail Spam folder you seek is two folders deep inside your Gmail account.
    Here's my Gmail account listing:
It has 41 unread messages. If I hover my cursor over the oval with "41" in it, the oval shifts left and "Show" appears. If I click on "Show", I get this:
If I click on the disclosure triangle left of the "[Gmail]" folder, voila!
By the way, this intermediate "[Gmail]" folder is specific to Gmail, Google Apps mail sites, and other mail sites using Google's Gmail code, as is the All Mail folder. Other servers will have their own folder structure.

  • Sending Password-Protected PDF in Apple Mail

I am trying to send such to a client but the attachment seems to refuse to appear in the email. Non-protected pdf's do not display this symptom.
    How can I do this?

By "appear in the email" you mean "look like a picture"? This is just an oddity of Apple Mail; almost every other email program doesn't show PDF files, and you can't control whether Apple Mail will do so...

  • Serious Apple Mail BUG!

    Bug
Whenever a computer is not connected to the internet and email has been written in Apple Mail while it's in offline mode and the application closed and then re-opened in "Offline" mode, Mail attempts to send mail sitting in the outbox nevertheless. Resulting in the first message in the Outbox queue for each SMTP used being automatically opened and the following error message.
*not able to send images to thread.
Since I use three different SMTP servers potentially three email windows can open when opening Apple Mail while in "Offline" mode. That means I have to click the "Close Window" button three times every time I open Apple Mail during the time I am not connected to the internet. Not everyone, including me, with a PowerBook, which is meant to be mobile, has internet access at all times.
How could this have possibly been overlooked? This has been a bug in all versions of Apple Mail!! Please FIX IT as it's irritating enough to force one to start sending snail mail or worse use Microsoft Entourage.
    SIncerely,
    John Prokos

Thank you for your suggestions, which is exactly what I was looking for. I have sent a feeback on Mail to Apple as you suggested. I am not sure that will make a difference but there is always hope.
Regarding your suggestion of saving email to the Draft folder… that would be a great solution but opening every email I had written during the week so I could send them off one by one is equally as irritating. I do wish there was a send button in the main window so I could group select email and send them off without having to open each one.

  • How do I import my mbox file for Apple Mail?

I just did a clean install of my mac os on an iMac. Prior to the install, I exported my mail account to an external drive. I got an INBOX.mbox file/folder that's 4.32GBs. When I click the file, there is an "mbox" file and a "table_of_contents" file.
In Apple mail, I chose import mailboxes - Mail for Mac OS X - and clicked the file. It brings an INBOX folder into the ON MY MAC folder... but no mail. I have tried this a 1/2-dozen ways and cannot get my mail to reload. I assume it's there since the file is 4.32GB.
Anyone have thoughts on this? This is business mail that I need for sure. I feel confident that the files are there since the file is so big. What gives?

It's a mac drive, however, I got past that issue by copying the file to my desktop. The issue now is that it won't load all of the way. It crashes mail half way through. I get mail back to 2011 when it should go back to 2008.
    Thoughts?

  • Apple Mail limits under 10.6 10.7 10.8

going insane!  have read a ton of posts but nothing definitive to my problem
Apple Mail has been reindexing mailboxes on only one user, on and off, for a couple of months now!
incredibly frustrating for him (and me.)
    Apple Mail Version 4.6 (1085)
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
    Exchange IMAP
All started when we upgraded the Kerio mailserver to the latest version, but the problem is not visible in web mail OR any other client i've tried to connect to this account with. It only happens in Apple Mail on this Mac. Kerio support been brilliant throughout but we are at the point that it looks like its Apple Mail.
It can go for days without rebuilding and then suddenly it says INDEXING or CACHING, 4960 of 11008 (or similar messages)
the user HAD an exceptionally high amount of mail 85,000+ in the inbox alone
this was reduced to the mail server supported recommendation of <10,000 per box. This was done to all but the Sent items (time constraints).
Since then mail has continued to flow and so the boxes continue to increase.
INBOX and SENT are over the 10,000 message guide, but I now suspect we are hitting the OS limit of 2GB per box (is that fact?)
    Sent Messages are 9.5GB
    Inbox 2.7GB
and then there are at least another 6 box >1GB
    the rest are <than 1GB
simple questions I need to answer:
Can someone provide me a link to a definitive Apple doc that says 2GB limit per mailbox for Apple Mail please?
    and
Does Apple Mail under 10.7 or 10.8 suffer the same 2GB limitation?
....or does anyone else have any suggestions I may have overlooked
    TIA
